The downward spiral that ends with the scattering and confusion of humanity at Babylon makes it clear that human beings are the ones to blame for what’s wrong with the world today. And so now the only question that remains is, “Is there a solution to the problem that we have created, and if there is what is that solution?”

Many of us struggle with the flood story and the whole idea of a God who would wipe out humanity and animals with a great flood. But when we truly read the flood story in its proper context, we come to see that it is actually okay for us to not like the idea of God wiping people out because it is God himself who hates it more than we do.

Regardless of one’s worldview or beliefs, almost everyone agrees that there are things in this world that ought to be different. We might disagree as to why or how they ought to be different, but at the end of the day, we all have this deep conviction within us that the world is not what it should be.

We often assume that the world was perfect until humanity ruined it, and because of that we now have to work in order to survive. However, when we read the Genesis account of creation, we see that not only is it offering revolutionary ideas about God, creation and humanity, but it is also offering what would have been a revolutionary perspective towards work and humanity’s purpose in this world.

We know that there is something uniquely different about us, and regardless of our worldview or spiritual beliefs, we know that we have the leading role when it comes to taking care of this world. When we step out of our modern shoes and slip on the sandals of the ancient Israelites, we discover that Genesis 1 is not primarily concerned about the material things being created as much as it is about the meaning and purpose for which they are created. It is not trying to give us detailed information on what came first and what came next and exactly how long all this took. It is providing an introduction and answering the question, “Who is the God responsible for such a wonderful creation?”

Many were likely hoping that the good news of the kingdom meant justice was about to be served and that those who had wronged them and mistreated them were about to get what they deserved. But Jesus says something that turns this expectation and attitude completely upside-down.

Jesus addresses the practice of swearing oaths as a way to make your words seem more trustworthy and credible. But on a deeper level, Jesus also addresses all forms of verbal manipulation where we add words or spin words in order to help us achieve what we want. And this is something that is much more prevalent in our own lives than we often realize.

Jesus is forming a new people and teaching them a way of being that is in alignment with the character and kingdom of God. Jesus is teaching us about a kind of righteousness that is greater than the scribes and Pharisees. So it should not surprise us that Jesus would call us to a higher view of marriage than most people are willing to embrace.

Sexual desire is a good thing that God has built into us as human beings. It is something that is celebrated in Scripture and that God himself has declared as good. Jesus teaches us to get control over our sexual desire; not to suppress our sexuality altogether.

If someone asked you, “What was main theme of Jesus’ life and teaching?” Or if you had to summarize all that Jesus said and taught in one tweet-able sentence, what would you say? Many of us might say something about salvation or forgiveness of sin or loving your enemies or treating others the way you want to be treated, but would you say something about the kingdom of God?
This is our first episode in a series we’re doing on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount is an extraordinary teaching where Jesus is casting a vision for a new way of being human in the world — a way of being that is in alignment with what he called the kingdom of God.

God’s plan is to set up his own kingdom made up of people from all nations that will overcome all the other kingdoms of this world and never be destroyed. Jesus came to fulfill that plan, and he now sits at the right hand of God inviting people to turn from the way of this world and to follow him and to once again rule over this world with him in a renewed partnership with God.

In this seventh and final episode in our series, we look at Jesus’ encounter with a man named Cleopas. This encounter takes place on the Sunday after Jesus had been executed by the Romans. It is probably sometime in the afternoon on Sunday, and at this point in the day, there are some rumors going around that Jesus’ body is missing. It’s not in the tomb anymore. Some people are saying that he is alive, but let’s be honest… that sounds crazy.

There is one sentence in three of the four Gospels that mentions this man named, Simon of Cyrene. This man’s story is told in one sentence, and yet we managed to get a thirty-minute episode out of that one sentence.
This is the sixth episode in a seven-part series that introduces us to Jesus of Nazareth through the actual stories of people who had their lives transformed through an encounter with him. In this episode, we see Jesus walking the last half-mile of his life from Pilate’s palace to the place of his crucifixion. However, it is during this last half-mile that an innocent bystander becomes intimately connected to Jesus of Nazareth.

This is a powerful story that demonstrates the true character of God and just how much Jesus cares about those who are often neglected or ignored.

In this episode, we see Jesus inviting himself over to stay with one of the last people in the city that anyone would have expected Jesus to hang out with.
This is a powerful story of hope and what Rosaria Butterfield calls “radical ordinary hospitality”. This was a real-life prodigal son story that demonstrated how Jesus was fulfilling God’s promise to seek and to save the lost.

In this episode, we see Jesus giving two people way more than they anticipated when they came to him for help.
This is one of my favorite stories in the Gospels, and the idea that this might be Jairus’ personal testimony of how he became a follower of Jesus makes it even better. I hope that is actually what happened. Either way, it’s still a great story with another great story that takes place right in the middle of it. Scholars call this a “Mark Sandwich” and I hope you enjoy it!
