When you step into a job interview, you want to sound clear, confident, and professional.

There are several ways that we can use colours in the English language to express emotions or ideas. For example, the colour red is often associated with anger or passion. Someone who is 'feeling blue' is sad.

The passive voice is a tricky grammar subject for many English language learners. When we use the active voice, the subject does the action ("I ate an apple."). However, in the passive voice, the focus of the sentence switches, and the subject receives the action. We use the verb to be and the past participle form of the main verb to form the sentence ("The apple was eaten (by me).")
We use passive voice when the doer of the action is obvious, unimportant, or unknown. If we want to say who did the action, we can use the preposition 'by'.

For example:

As you may have heard, the James Webb Space Telescope recently published its first images. The raw images look slightly different from what we're used to from the Hubble Space Telescope because it captures infrared light instead of visible. This means we can 'look into the past' at stars so far away they may no longer exist.

Imagine you're meeting a coworker for the first time and you’re making small talk. What might you say to them?
“How do you do?”
“How has your project been going?”
“How are you feeling today?”
Those phrases all mean similar things, but if you switch around the auxiliary verbs a friendly and polite conversation could turn miserable and confusing:
“How are you do?”
“How do the project been going?”
“How have you feeling this morning?”
Changing these few little words can mean the difference between the start of a fruitful partnership and starting off on the absolute wrong foot! That’s because those words, also known as auxiliary verbs, are small but mighty parts of a sentence.

Using conditionals is a natural part of conversation for native speakers. Often, native speakers don’t even realize they are using conditionals!
Conditional sentences suggest that there are consequences for every action. Conditional sentences consist of a condition (the ‘if’ clause) and a result. Students are often confused about which conditional to use as we use different conditionals for different situations. Conditionals can be difficult to implement as we are required to utilize all the verb tenses.

A collocation is when two or more words often go together. For example, in English we usually say use the verb ‘strike’ before the noun ‘deal’. So the collocation is ‘strike a deal’ which means to succeed in securing a deal with a company. Although you could say we ‘hit a deal’ it sounds unnatural, when to ‘strike a deal’ is a natural example. Some common verbs used in collocations are: have, go, make, do, take, break, catch, save, keep, pay, among many others.

An adverb of degree is an adverb that tells you about the intensity of something. What I mean by intensity is – we may wish to tell our friend that we are happy. But we may want to tell them how happy we are (ergo the intensity of our happiness). So we could say: I am extremely happy (meaning you are very happy) or I am not very happy (meaning you are close to being sad.)
Other examples of adverbs of degree include: too, enough, very, incredibly and extremely.
Here are some sentence examples:
The movie was extremely disappointing.
She is walking too fast.
I am incredibly angry at what just happened.

If you’ve been studying English for a while, you’ll undoubtedly have stumbled across several phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are extremely common in English.
They pop up everywhere in everyday conversation. If you’re not looking out for them, you may not even realise you are using them! In this blog post we will go over some commonly-used phrasal verbs related to clothing.
Some of these phrasal verbs are separable, meaning that you can use a noun or object pronoun in the centre of the verb and preposition. Other phrasal verbs are inseparable, meaning the noun or object pronoun must go afterwards.

For today's episode, we are revisiting an episode on phrasal verbs with 'cut'.
As an English learner, I'm sure you have learned many phrasal verbs to include in your informal conversations in English. So, what is a phrasal verb?
A phrasal verb consists of a root verb (such as go, put or set) and an adverb or preposition (such as away, on or out).
Phrasal verbs are idiomatic, which means that the phrasal verb has a different meaning to the individual words within the phrase.

Students are often confused about the differences between using the past simple and present perfect in the OET writing. In this blog, I will go over a few different tenses and how to use them in a referral or discharge letter.
The OET’s main focus is to test your ability to communicate effectively in the healthcare environment. This does not mean that grammar is not at all important in the exam. Using the right tenses in your referral and discharge letters can help you communicate information more effectively. On the other hand, using an incorrect tense could cause confusion.

Negotiating in English can seem daunting at first, but the Oxford English Dictionary describes negotiation as a “discussion aimed at reaching an agreement”. It’s likely you engage in negotiation in English or your language daily without even thinking about it. Using modal verbs in negotiations can help you express attitude, add more nuance, and remain polite.
Negotiating is not just about getting your way. If one side gets their way, then the other side may leave disappointed and discouraged. A successful negotiation leaves everyone satisfied. This is why it’s crucial to make sure to stay polite throughout any negotiations.

I know it’s an outrageously big-headed thing to do – to quote yourself – but I was asked by the Poetry Question to write about the power of poetry for their continuous essay series on the subject, and, I wrote, back in 2019, a piece I still very much agree with. I said,
‘The power of poetry is its timeliness. Poetry endures. It survives the wars, the natural disasters, the harshness of aging. It survives foolish kings and queens, prime ministers and presidents, tsars and popes. It survives dictatorships, genocide, corruption. It survives injustice. It survives cancer. Poetry is everywhere, no matter how much you avoid it. Poetry adapts. Poetry attacks. Poetry breathes. Poetry is fluid. Poetry waits...Poetry travels. Poetry is patient. The power of poetry resides with its inability to be defined.’
I quote this not, as they say, to toot my own horn or blow my own trumpet but because it is a good way of summing up my love of poetry and my excitement, therefore, in sharing some of my favourite collections with you. Most of books mentioned below are ones I’ve read in the past five years. I’ve recommended poetry books before, in our very own Novel Writing Course and I can’t not mention our Novels that Changed Our Lives series, in which teachers and students of Intrepid English spoke about the books that shaped them in some way.
Book recommendations are among my favourite things to give. I, myself, am a poet and am constantly consuming different voices and deconstructing the construction of language. So, here is the first part of my ten poetry must-reads.

Did you know that there are more than 25,000 idiomatic phrases in English? Idioms are used in everyday language to add fluency and description to a sentence. They can be difficult for English learners to understand because the meaning of the idiom often has nothing to do with the individual words within the idiom.
For instance, when we describe something as being “like water off a duck’s back”, we are not talking about a wet bird, we mean to say that something, such as criticism, has no affect on a person.

Last time I talked about five of my top ten non-fiction books. There were books about World War II, murders and grief. Dark subjects, I know, but I feel these books have the ability to touch us so deeply and give us the opportunity to explore the human condition.Here in part 2, I will explore adoption, gun crime, writing, reading and brain surgery. During these unprecedented times, entertainment is paramount. But something struck me – the longer this situation continues, the longer our favourite TV shows will remain on hold and films will continue to be unmade. That is why books are of the utmost importance. We need new stories. Not that I’m against humour or hopeful stories, it’s just that, in times of darkness, I retreat to darkness. The longer I stay there the more familiar I become. The less unknown it is. The less I fear.In these uncertain times, where it is recommended we haul ourselves up in our towers, we are relying on sources of entertainment we would otherwise take for granted. Yes, we have Netflix. Yes, we have the Internet. But let’s not forget that the majority of the TV shows and films you’re watching are based on books. Books came first. Books will out.So, here are the first five books in my list of Top 10 Non-Fiction books.
