When parents brought their children to see Jesus the disciples stepped in the way, rebuking them. But Jesus rebukes His disciples and welcomes the children into His presence. If Joseph hadn’t listened and obeyed God’s warning, Jesus wouldn’t have survived. It is God’s guidance that protects us and keeps us on the right path, the good path. While we understand that war on earth is a reality, many of us aren’t aware that there is also a spiritual war taking place. There is much mystery to the spiritual war waging around us, but the Bible seems to teach us that what happens in that realm affects us here on earth. Could much of the hopelessness and anxiety we see today, the fighting that can creep up into a family, the bitterness in our hearts be, at least in part, because of spiritual attack? The Bible suggests that just as God and His angels are moved to encourage and help, Satan and his army seek to destroy. So, do we know how to protect ourselves and our families? As Daniel grows older living under the Babylonian rule, he continues to pass challenge after challenge – proving his wisdom, knowledge, and skill. When a new ruler takes the throne, he will be called upon once again to deliver bad news. How does he respond? He chooses to speak the truth courageously and boldly. But courage and boldness don’t just come to him naturally. He has been cultivating this skill for years so that when the opportunity presents itself, he is ready. We can learn from Daniel these tools and skills so when the opportunity arises for us to speak boldly, we are ready.

Regardless of how we feel about it, life in this world will end. Unless Jesus returns in our lifetime, we will all experience the reality of death. What we have to understand is that we have an enemy, Satan, who uses death against us, who aims for us to waste our life living in fear of dying. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I struggle being lead. Honestly, I am not good at it, because I like to be in charge of my own life. But in John 10 Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd, and a shepherd’s job is to lead the flock. This means that we have a Shepherd who is good and can be trusted, and we can choose to follow him. This Sunday we are going to ask the questions why does it matter that Jesus is the Good Shepherd? And if he is in fact good, what does that mean for our life?

To get on the other side of a barrier that we can’t climb or go around, we need an opening, a door, a gate. Jesus teaches us that He is the gate that gives us access through the barrier. But why do we want to be on the other side? Why do we want access at all? Is the reality on the other side worth the cost of surrendering to the shepherd? What if we think we have access, but we don’t? In this message we will talk about the core of the Gospel, which many people miss, and how to make sure we have access to it.

We all know that scary things go bump in the night. That’s why it’s ideal to have light! Yet spiritually, many people stumble around in darkness rather than walk in the light, they live in fear rather than by faith. Jesus claims to be able to help us; He claims to be the light of the world. In John 6 Jesus tells His followers they must feed on His flesh and drink His blood! Wow! Just imagine what people must have been thinking who heard Jesus say this. This has got to be one of the wildest statements in the entire Bible. So, why does Jesus say this? Was it to be controversial? Just to get a reaction? Jesus says this because feasting on His body and blood is absolutely essential if a person desires eternal life. In this message we will discuss Jesus’ claim as the bread of life and why it is so important for our life (and culture) today.

We all get angry at times. When people have something desirable that we don’t have—wealth, talents, popularity, etc.—envy is very natural. Because envy secretly turns people into our enemy. But how can we overcome envy when so many solutions are just band-aids covering over the real problem? On the night he was betrayed, Jesus gave thanks, broke bread and gave it to his disciples. He told them that the bread was his body and to eat it in remembrance of him. He also said the wine was his blood and to remember him when they drank it. Can you imagine how strange this must have seemed to his disciples? For many of us today communion is nothing more than a church ritual to think about Jesus. But it’s important we understand its deeper significance, because it has the power to transform, protect, and richly bless our lives. In this message we will see that communion is more than just a church tradition and learn why it’s of upmost importance we continue to eat and drink the body and blood.
It is a story that is a stalwart in our society. We all love a good story of David and Goliath. The underdog defeating the insurmountable odds. We see it in movies and we celebrate these stories. But what if we were actually missing the full picture of this story. What if it was more then just "be like David, and defeat your giants." What if there is a great story? After denying Jesus at his trial and crucifixion, we can only imagine the level of guilt and shame Peter must have been feeling. Many of us have heard the story about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and that it serves as an example of how we are to serve others. But there is another angle to this story as well. Would you want someone to touch your feet? Especially if they were filthy? Maybe this story is also to teach us about letting Jesus cleanse us, in the most protected, hidden places of our hearts. In this message we will look at this story through the lens of the disciples and talk about why it’s crucial to let Jesus clean your feet.
At some point, if you follow Christ, your faith will be tested. You will find yourself facing challenges and hardship. Most of us give up in moments like these, choosing comfort over commitment and character. When three godly men refuse to worship a false idol, the king of Babylon has them thrown into a fiery furnace. But sometimes the furnace is where we really experience God. In this message, we will look at why God can use challenges and hardship to transform our lives in ways we never thought possible.
Jesus wants us to learn how to walk in faith, how to keep peace in our hearts at all times. Not only does Jesus walk over the stormy waters of life, He wants to teach us how to do it, too! When Peter requests to walk on the water with Jesus, something incredible happens: he does—at least for a few steps. We look around and see the winds of social change, economic challenges and our own personal struggles. How do we stay hopeful and not sink? In this message we will discover the key to keeping peace in our hearts, especially when the winds come against us.
When God calls upon Jonah to go to the people of Ninevah and call them to repentance, Jonah runs away from God. The good news is that God doesn’t run away from Jonah, and He doesn’t run away from us. We might think we have God figured out, but God continues to be bigger, better and greater than we think. In this message we will look at the story of Jonah and the fish and discover how it points us to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We all know what comes before a fall. Pride. Yet are we even aware of the areas of pride in our life? Pride can be sneaky, subtle, and can justify itself behind the guise of “living for God.” We often don’t realize it’s there until it’s too late. It is crucial that we check our hearts to see if any pride is lurking there. In this message Jesus will gives us a picture of pride and humility, and we will ask ourselves some tough questions that could save us from a great fall.
We’ve all been hurt by somebody else. It’s an unfortunate part of life in an imperfect world. But we don’t have to let other people’s offenses poison our hearts. We can’t always choose how we’re treated by others, but we can choose how we respond—we can choose to forgive. Jesus teaches us to forgive because, in part, we do ourselves a favor by doing so. We free our hearts from bitterness, anger, and resentment. In this message we will look at Jesus’ parable on forgiveness and how the cross helps us to forgive others.
We live in a connected world. You could argue that we are more connected now then ever before in history. Yet, 38 percent of Americans say they experience serious loneliness. If we are not careful, even in this connected world we can drift into disconnection. Join us Sunday as we talk about how we can check our hearts and fight against disconnection.
The Bible teaches that God and His truths are real. Experience teaches that our lives are better when we live in accordance with these truths. But the devil doesn’t want us to live according to these convictions, he wants us to compromise. He knows this will cost us and hurt us and our families in the end. In this message we will look at the cost of compromise and and the devils strategies to get us to compromise our faith.
Life can be exhausting. If we’re not careful, we will miss out on God’s good plan for our life and find ourselves muddling through our days joyless. Jesus wants so much more for us! In this message we will check our heart for burnout and give ourselves permission to pushback on the expectations of the world (and people) and choose joy.
Cynicism is one of the dominant spirits of our current age. On a personal level, it is a slow toxin that builds calluses around our hearts over time. It can happen without us even realizing until it is too late. Even worse, it masks itself as “realism”, so we justify our toxic behavior. How did we get here? How come we did not recognize our slow slide into being cynical? This week we will do a heart check to analyze some of the warning signs and find ways to keep cynicism at bay.
When we compare ourselves with others, we usually end up feeling unhappy, bitter, maybe even angry. How many of us miss out on enjoying God’s good, personalized blessings because we’re too busy wanting what others have? In a world of social media, this is a bigger challenge than ever. It’s time to check our heart because this is a miserable way to go through life. In this message we will discuss the reasons comparison is so dangerous and how we can free ourselves from this happiness-killing sin.
RSVP. It simply means to, “please reply to an invitation”. Christians can be notoriously bad at inviting others into considering faith in Jesus Christ. There are many reasons and fears around inviting people to discuss Jesus, but we can get better. With God’s help, I know we can improve. And we have the perfect model to show us how it’s done: Jesus. Come see the invitational style of Jesus and learn how we can improve at inviting others into a life-giving relationship with Him.
After God created the world, He placed Adam and Eve in a beautiful garden. Adam and Eve were happy and free to eat from the tree that filled them with life. But, they sinned against God and ended up banished from the Garden. Since that time, mankind has longed to return to the garden. We long for a life that is full of life and free from problems. Is it possible to experience the garden in this lifetime? In this message we will compare Adam and Jesus, and learn the secret of the garden.
This Sunday we look at the stories of the Patriarchs of our faith like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. What is the Gospel thread that weaves its way through all of their stories? What about the "not so Disney friendly" stories in Genesis? Do those also have a Gospel thread? Can we still find Jesus even in the mess? Let's pull on that thread together this Sunday.
Mankind has always wanted to build his own kingdom, an attempt to be our own god. The problem is that it never works and such attempts always fail. When the descendants of Noah decide to build their own city with a tower to the heavens, it ends with confusion and failure. Which kingdom do we belong to? Man’s or God’s? In this message we will look at the Tower of Babel and the dangers of trying to do life apart from God (and the benefits of life in relationship with God).
The story of Noah’s Ark and the great flood is terrible, tragic, and cataclysmic to say the least. But even in the darkness of Noah’s day, we can see the thread of God’s plan being woven and bringing hope to those who would follow. There are pictures in the flood narrative that point to a greater hope that would come. In this message, we will look at four snapshots of the hope we have in Christ. And even today, when days seem dark, we need to be reminded of that same hope.
At some point, we all need a new beginning, a fresh start, and a new way of life. When we become Christians, we become something radically new. The Bible tells us that we become a new creation, the old is gone and the new has come. But what do we do when we don’t see change or progress happening in our lives? Maybe it even seems like we’ve taken a few steps backwards. In this message, we will look at how God is creating us into something new and what to do when we don’t feel like a new creation.
After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they realized they were naked became afraid of God. Many of us wrestle with where we stand with God, especially when we feel like we’ve failed in some area of life. Were we meant to continually wonder whether God approves of us or not, whether we’ve done enough for Him to accept us? In this message we will look at something we can clothe ourselves with that gives us complete assurance and confidence before God and others.
Right from the beginning of the Bible God tells the devil that one day he will be defeated. The devil is crafty and wants to have power over human beings, bringing destruction into our life, family and community. So how do we fight back? How do we live a life of total victory? In this message we will look at God’s promise to the devil, how it was accomplished, and what it means for our lives today.
The word Christian is only in the New Testament three times. The word disciple, however, shows up in the New Testament 269 times. Clearly, the goal is to be more than just a “Christian;” the goal is to be a disciple. But what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? How do you become a disciple? In this message we will look at how Jesus defines a true disciple and the steps you can take to become one.
We prepare for all kinds of events in life, marriage, kids, careers, retirement. But are we prepared for the greatest event of all, what happens when we die? While death might not be a subject we like to think about, it is a reality that we must prepare for. What will it be like? What happens right after we die? In this message we will answer these questions and make sure we have no doubts where we will spend our eternity.
At times life feels like we are made for more than just living for ourselves. That’s because we are! Jesus has given us a purpose to fulfill on earth and promises that He will help us do it. But how? By trying harder? By faking it? Maybe there is a better, easier, life-giving way to live the life Christ calls us to. In this message we will discuss what Jesus means when He calls us to produce fruit and we will discover the key to living the life we were all made for.
The peace found in this world is too fragile and unstable to place your hope in. However, the peace that comes from God is a personal promise that you can count on, regardless of your circumstances.
