Romans 12:8
(KJV) Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

(NIV) if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

(NLT) If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

We’re so glad you’re considering a marriage retreat with your spouse. We can both say that this is something we look forward to doing together. People may ask: why have a marriage retreat? Well, we have several reasons why we do a marriage retreat, but we tried to narrow them down to five.

We try to focus on remembering why we got together in the first place.

Our second is to be of one accord. We take this time to unplug and intentionally focus on each other.

The third reason is we Learn from Our Past: The best way we plan for the future is by learning from our past failures and successes.

Measurement is our fourth reason: As a tool of measurement, we take this time to highlight improvements throughout the year(s).

The fifth and final reason is Intentionality: We take this time to be intentional—not just in focusing on one another, but also in dating each other.

In this interactive workbook, you'll have several tools to help you plan while on your marriage retreat, from a schedule template to a budget calendar to fun date night ideas. One of the last things the enemy wants to see is a husband and a wife seeking God's vision and plans for their marriage, all for His glory. So today, begin casting vision for your marriage!

1) Worry

3) Loss of Focus

Avoid the distraction, allow the interruption.

Luke 10:38-42
38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

With every obstacle we face, with the persistence of life’s difficulties, and with the nagging fears and doubts that we face, let’s not force ourselves to come up with a solution to all. Let’s not assume that we don’t have the answer or that God is silent. Where we search for answers, let us find the solution in this question.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. – Proverbs 3:5‭-‬6 NLT

If you’ve been a follower of Jesus for a while, unfortunately, it’s easy to gloss over this scripture. Or rather, it’s easier to just rush through and read it because it’s one of those scriptures that people quote a lot or one of the first ones people memorize. In this episode, I'll discuss why it's important to continue to put those familiar scriptures into practice.

We're hitting the books in this episode with "Before You Vote" by David Platt. What are seven essential questions Christians should ask before heading out to the polls?

Is referring to someone as God's candidate a safe statement? What policies are rooted in biblical truths, and which ones are rooted in preferences?

Hey! In this episode, we're "hitting the books!" Tune in for the first book review of the year, "Unoffendable," by Ryan Leak.

In short, how do we become less offended by what people say and do, and better yet, less offended by what they don’t say or do that we believe they should? The last part of the question has resonated with me the most.

I’d have to say that one of my favorite takeaways was the phrase "phantom discouragement." Phantom discouragement happens when you see someone else being complimented for something you consistently do. No one said anything negative to or about you, but they also didn’t acknowledge what you consistently do. Ryan says it better, “Phantom discouragement will put a negative spin and filter on everything positive around us that is not about us.”

Listen for more on this book.

This month’s theme is about physical health. I knew I’d want to discuss physical health at some point, but I wasn’t in a hurry because the world puts so much emphasis on it. I wanted to make sure I’d shared the importance of spiritual health, mental and emotional, as well as healthy relationships before I jumped into this topic.

I’ve spent a year working to get back into shape. It’s a lifestyle decision, not just about wanting to see a number on the scale or look good. Those are bonuses. The past year has been work. This month, I want to share the tips that have helped me develop healthier choices along the way. It doesn’t just happen in a day, but making small healthy decisions daily can happen.

Tips:
1) Count those calories!
2) Be realistic about what you want to give up.
3) Take baby steps to permanent change.
4) Focus on healthiness.
5) Find what works best for you.

I don’t know why I’ve never thought of this before, but M.E. Day is becoming a thing. What is M.E. Day? It’s mental and emotional health day.

Long story short, I flipped out preparing for the upcoming conference. I really didn’t realize how mentally and emotionally drained I was from preparing for the conference and ending the school year, along with, well, life in general.

So I’ve decided there needs to be M.E. Day. One dedicated day to intentionally assess how I’m feeling mentally and emotionally.

Here are the final tips in audio for Purposeful Living. It's been a great month to focus on purpose and intentionality.  My challenge to you is to do these little things. My next challenge is to be ok with your gradual pace. And next, celebrate the small victories. Today, you put tip 2 into action. Hooray! One day this week you positively affirmed yourself or maybe someone else. Kudos to you!

I talk about the acronym C.L.E.A.R. in this video. How important is it for us to make sure we're thinking about what we're thinking about? It's vital. This speech was for Middle to High School students in South Carolina.

This month we're focusing on Purposeful Living. Here are the first few tips I use.

Tip #1: Choose Joy

Find joy in everyday. One thing I’ve challenged myself to do everyday is find one thing to look forward to. This is a simple exercise and a huge game changer. It’s useful for a few reasons.

1) The feeling of hope creates joyful anticipation.

2) It promotes a more positive outlook on life.

3) It creates simplicity in life that we all need from time to time.

Tip #2: Create healthy habits

I have to say that creating healthy habits is another game changer. Healthy habits show that you value yourself. If I care enough about making healthy choices that’s because I value my life, and the lives of others hopefully.

Tip #3: Own It!

This is a tough tip. I’ll be honest, this is one I’ve struggled with. I struggle with owning it!

What I mean by this, is owning what I’m good at. Why is this hard? It’s hard because I don’t want to seem cocky or overly prideful. But truthfully, false humility is a really bad look too. There’s a way to be confident without being cocky. Pretending like I’m not good at something that God has gifted me at is not humility.

Secondly, I also don’t want to set myself up for failure by thinking I’m good at something that I’m really not. I really don’t want to be the American Idol contestant that’s confident she can sing and she really can’t.

In January we focused on goal-setting. The final tip of January was accountability, in which the focus was on having an accountability partner. So this month of February, our focus will be on healthy relationships.

Relationships come in many forms. You’ve got the family dynamic. Dating and marital relationships are one. You have friendships, and you also have work relationships, etc. Mainly, we’ll focus on friendships, but any form of relationship could benefit from these tools.

We really do thrive in community and I know we like to think we don’t need people, but we do. I truly believe relationships can be really good or really bad. They could even fall into one of the three categories: toxic, tolerable, or transcendent.

Toxic friendships hurt all parties involved. Tolerable friendships may help pass the time by, I think of them more like acquaintances, but are they truly groundbreaking? However, transcendent friendships are the ones that change lives. They’re the ones that bless you and all parties involved.

Decide today what type of friendships you want to have. And make sure the decision is a healthy one.

Whether you’re making resolutions for the new year or lifelong goals, having a blueprint for anything is always helpful. So for the month of January we considered “5 Tips for Goal-Setting.” There’s no one way or one size fits all formula to goal-setting. Simply put, do what works for you. On a personal note I pray over my goals. If they don’t have God’s blessing then I don’t see them as useful or necessary.

For me, these are the five things I consider when setting goals. Are my goals:

Intentional
Realistic
Healthy
Helpful
Accountable
