In this episode of the EntrePastors Podcast, Jon and Les talk with Tim Walker about his incredible church planting journey as well as an exciting business he is building.
Tim planted Restored Church 12 years ago in Wilkes Barre, PA. Tim describes Restored Church as an urban church that is primarily of and for the poor. They’ve seen God do incredible things including never having a Sunday yet without new people, they’ve celebrated over 200 baptisms, and their church is primarily filled with first generation Christians that Jesus has rescued out of addiction, prision, prostitution, gangs, satanism, atheism, and everything else in between.
On the business side, time has launched Travel Multiplier, a business that teaches people how to do Travel Hacking. For many years in ministry Tim’s family barely made enough to live on, let alone travel for fun and recreation. That all changed when Tim learned how to earn thousands of dollars of free travel through a strategic process called Travel Hacking (no time-shares, pyramid schemes, or bait & switch gimmicks involved!)
Once Tim mastered this process for himself and his family, he started helping some other family and friends enjoy the same types of results. Then he realized he could turn it into a knowledge-based business that could generate real income for his family. Now through his business he teaches others how to do Travel Hacking through an on-demand course and one-on-one personalized coaching.

In this episode of the EntrePastors Podcast Jon and Les talk with Whitney Johnson about how she is finding opportunities for ministry everywhere as a result of her service-based business. In recent years, Whitney has launched her own cleaning business with a focus of specifically serving the elderly. In this episode of the EntrePastors Podcast we share the story of our friend Tyson Priest who has been on an incredible journey over the past few years. Tyson planted and led a church in rural Indiana for a season, until it became apparent that the time had come to close the doors of the church. While on one hand this certainly represents the death of a dream and the disappointment that so many pastors can identify with when the thing we are asking and believing God for does not happen the way we hoped it would, Tyson shares an amazing story of how God is writing a new story of arguably even more fruitfulness for the kingdom that is happening in the marketplace. Through some truly supernatural opportunities in recent months, Tyson has led many people to Christ, helped them take a step of obedience through the waters of baptism, and is now discipling these new believers in an online forum. His story stands as an awesome reminder that just because you may no longer be in vocational ministry, your work and calling to pastor others is just as relevant, and arguably even more effective, through marketplace activities.

In this episode of the EntrePastors Podcast Jon is going to dive into a subject that might be tough for some pastors to hear. We’re going to talk about how to overcome a spirit of entitlement. Jon unpacks how living in poverty can ultimately produce people who come to feel entitled to the generosity of others and unfortunately, pastors are not exempt from this. The truth is many pastors have lived in poverty for years and their only “funding model” is to rely upon the generosity of others. If we’re not careful, we can begin to assume a posture of entitlement without realizing it. You will hear Jon cast a compelling vision for getting you to a place of financial freedom where you will no longer need to be on the receiving end of other people’s generosity, but can instead be in a strong position to give generously to others out of the overflow of the abundance that is being created through your marketplace endeavors.

In this episode of the EntrePastors Podcast we talk with Mike Henry, founder of Follower of One, a nonprofit that helps believers integrate their faith with their work in the marketplace. Mike shares his story of coming to Christ years ago and feeling passionate about his new found faith, yet frustrated with the disconnect he often felt between the place where he worshiped (his church) and the place where he spent a significant part of his life (his work). To Mike, it seemed like the only form of ministry that was offered and validated by his church was either ministry that happened within the four walls of the church building, or more intense ministry that required getting on a plane and traveling to an entirely different country on a mission trip. Eventually this frustration led Mike to launch a movement of what has now become known as Follower of One that specializes in mobilizing believers on two-week “Marketplace Missions Trips.” Through this initiative, Mike helps regular everyday church members recognize and engage one of the most important mission fields they encounter on a regular basis as they get up and go to work each day. At EntrePastors, we often say that “business IS ministry,” and that often there are far more opportunities to minister to others through marketplace activities than from behind a pulpit. In this episode of the EntrePastors podcast Jon and Les welcome back returning guest Joshua Brown…aka “The Pressure Washing Pastor,” to wrestle with the question of whether or not pastors lack the grit to make good entrepreneurs. Who Not How is the second recommended book by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. Les shares from his and Jon’s experience of implementing the principles in Who Not How. Being successful isn’t only about business principles and strategies. Success is about the right partnerships and relationships. If you’re trying to climb a mountain, it’s wise to go with someone who’s already been to the summit. That’s what Who Not How is All About.
In this episode Les discusses one of two books by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. The title sounds counter-intuitive, but 10x is Easier Than 2x is absolutely true. The authors discuss how to change your thinking and behavior to focus on the 20% of activity that’s leading to 80% of the results. Exponential growth only results in exponential thoughts and actions. The book isn’t about working harder; it’s about working with more focus and efficiency.
Jon and Les have recommended The Prosperous Coach by Rich Litvin and Steve Chandler as much as any other resource. In this episode, Les talks about why they're so high on the book. It’s one thing to be able to coach someone, something that many pastors are great at. It’s something else to actually make money coaching. This flawed mindset is the result of a faulty paradigm that seeks to distinguish between the “sacred” and the “secular” arenas of life. And since our work is “sacred,” our callings are just a little more important than the work everyone else is called to do. It’s this mindset that often poses a real challenge for pastors to engage in marketplace activities because it’s somehow a move away from their “sacred” work. The best way to avoid this trap is to recognize that it’s ALL sacred and that business can be just as valid and effective ministry as church work can be.

For this “Saturday Replay” episode of the EntrePastors podcast we are sharing one of our all-time most downloaded episodes called “The Pressure Washing Pastor.” In this episode, Jon talks with Joshua Brown, also known as “The Pressure Washing Pastor.” Joshua has an incredible story of growing up on the streets of Nashville, living a life that was drifting far away from the Lord, but then being radically saved and transformed by the love of God. His passion for the Lord led him into spending many years serving in various vocational ministry roles. For Joshua, it seemed the more heavily he pursued the vocational work within the church, the further removed he felt from giving his life to actual ministry that was impacting others. In 2016, feeling both the frustration of the bureaucracy of church work along with the extreme financial hardships it was causing his family, Joshua launched his own pressure washing company. Over the next few years he would see his company grow into multiple locations with revenue that he never could have imagined. But the thing that Joshua found most exciting about his new role in the marketplace, was the endless opportunities to care for and shepherd people. Eventually he was given the title “the pressure washing pastor” by a group of businessmen in his community. Joshua decided to run with that mantle and now feels called by God to help others experience the same joys of profitable business and ministry that he has been able to experience by helping them launch their own pressure washing ventures as well.

Do words like “prosperity” and “abundance” make you nervous as a pastor? Dusty Foster is one of the most recent graduates of the EntrePastors Business Launch Academy as well as a member of our Business Builders community. In this episode, Jon and Les bring the EntrePastors business consultant, Shane Odom, back to the podcast to discuss the topic of using debt to start or grow a business. For many Christians, and especially pastors, debt is often seen as a negative thing to avoid at all costs. And while this may often be very good advice when it comes to consumer debt on depreciating items, there are times when leveraging debt for income-producing assets is not always such a bad thing.
In this conversation you will hear the guys talk about how to know the difference between “good debt” and “bad debt.” For some, this conversation may serve as a warning to not get over-extended with unnecessary debt, while for others it may be an invitation to reconsider some of their previously held notions about the subject of debt.

How in the world will they ever find the time to start and operate a business while still pastoring? The simple answer is through delegation.

On this episode of the EntrePastors podcast, Jon talks with Joshua Brown, also known as “The Pressure Washing Pastor.” Joshua has an incredible story of growing up on the streets of Nashville, living a life that was drifting far away from the Lord, but then being radically saved and transformed by the love of God.
His passion for the Lord led him into spending many years serving in various vocational ministry roles. For Joshua, it seemed the more heavily he pursued the vocational work within the church, the further removed he felt from giving his life to actual ministry that was impacting others.
In 2016, feeling both the frustration of the bureaucracy of church work along with the extreme financial hardships it was causing his family, Joshua launched his own pressure washing company. Over the next few years he would see his company grow into multiple locations with revenue that he never could have imagined.
But the thing that Joshua found most exciting about his new role in the marketplace, was the endless opportunities to care for and shepherd people. Eventually he was given the title “the pressure washing pastor” by a group of businessmen in his community.
Joshua decided to run with that mantle and now feels called by God to help others experience the same joys of profitable business and ministry that he has been able to experience - by helping them launch their own pressure washing ventures as well.

In this episode Jon visits with Kay Helm about how her passion and heart for missions has turned into an entrepreneurial opportunity to serve missionaries all around the world. In this episode Jon and Les speak directly to those who sit on boards and leadership teams in churches all across the nation. Unfortunately, in many instances, pastors feel as though their potential to engage in some kind of marketplace ministry will be directly opposed by their boards. Jon and Les have some words of admonition and encouragement for church boards and make a strong case for why it’s a “win-win” scenario for a pastor to be granted the freedom to launch a side-hustle in addition to serving in their pastoral role. Here are some of the big ideas Jon and Les share in this episode:
- The traditional model of the “full-time pastoral ministry” is taking pastors out of the ministry faster than we are replacing them.
- You likely have unrealistic expectations of your pastor!
- Your church will benefit when your pastor is not hurting financially.
- Both your pastor AND your church will benefit by having your pastor in the marketplace.
- Your church members will not be able to sit back and assume the pastor is the primary ministry provider. They will need to get off the bench and into the game.
- Your church will be able to identify and overcome any unrealistic and unbiblical expectations that have been placed upon their “full-time” pastor.
- Your pastor will be less hesitant to preach boldly, lead innovatively, and confront problems in the church.
- Your pastor will not have a low ceiling for their earning potential.
- Your pastor can avoid the trap of their church ministry becoming a one-dimensional, all-consuming identity.

- If you find yourself dealing with a toxic board and no ability to change it…LEAVE! There are so many ways for you to be obedient to God’s call upon your life and thrive in the process. You don’t have to keep putting up with a toxic situation!

Generally we find people in this space dealing with two different issues:

In this episode Jon and Les answer a question that comes up from time to time from pastors who are wrestling with the idea of launching a side-hustle.
Although the question gets asked in various ways, at its core is the dilemma some people believe exists for a pastor to have more than one stream of revenue.
Much of this thinking stems from a verse in 1 Corinthians 9 that contains the phrase, “those who preach the gospel should receive their living through the gospel.”
At first glance, some may interpret this to mean that a pastor should ONLY be paid for their gospel work. But is that really what Paul is communicating in the full context of this passage of Scripture? Jon and Les believe there is much more to understand around this topic.

In time, Wayne founded and built Celebrating Life Inc and has conducted over 7000 life celebrations. His dream is to replicate what he has built in Canada in the United States as well as he sees America on the same path to secularism that Canada is on.

In this episode Jon and Les talk with Katie Hornor, the founder and CEO of Handprint Legacy. Katie and her family have served as missionaries in Mexico for many years.
They started their missionary journey under a traditional funding model that had them traveling, raising financial support from outside donors, and ultimately being dependent upon those donations for ongoing support.
However, along the way they found a better, and much more profitable model for funding the work they feel God has called them to in the world.

Meet Ioannis (pronounced “Yani”) Gratsinopoulos. Initially, Ioannis resisted the thought of being an entrepastor. He really only ever wanted to be a full-time pastor. One trait that is common among entrepreneurs is the thrill of the start-up. Often we enjoy going “all-in” on new projects or pursuing our latest idea. Sometimes we are even tempted to walk away from our day job as we believe it’s holding us back from experiencing success in our newest side hustle. In this episode Jon and Les discuss this tendency and offer up the challenge to “keep your day job” while you’re pursuing and building other streams of income. In this show you will learn:
- On average, wealthy people have seven different streams of income while poor people only have one source of revenue.
- While it’s good to have multiple streams of income, it’s also advisable to focus on building them one at a time.
- Don’t confuse the consistency of a paycheck with security. That paycheck can disappear in an instant. Financial security comes from diversifying our income.
- It’s dangerous to rely too heavily on our side-hustle or new start up business to provide for our financial needs in the early days. This results in unnecessary pressure that can be detrimental to our new business as it causes us to appear desperate in our transactions with people.
We want to keep delivering good results in our day job as we build our side hustle.
