When Jesus said, "Seek first the kingdom of God," he gave us the core of his message and directed us to the core of our mission.
There is a section in the Bible called Minor Prophets: there's nothing minor about them!
Some books of the Bible receive much more attention than others…so from time to time it’s good to go off road and listen to voices we’re not used to hearing. Like the wisdom of Ecclesiastes.
The Holy Spirit is the power of God alive and at large in the world: reaching out to us with grace, and calling us to be gracious to others
Mark 6:30-34, 53-56: The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
Focusing on the history of the word used in this passage in Greek to describe the Holy Spirit—helper, care-giver, assistant (many fascinating translations). Making a connection with Mother’s Day and to the collective effort of stomping the divots as an illustration of what Holy Spirit work looks like in our lives.
How would you pray, if you knew there were no tomorrow? Would it be any different than normal? We’ll look into how and why Jesus taught people to pray in one of scripture’s most famous texts.

We all need a little help from time to time. And it's humility that helps compassion to be one of the world's greatest forces for good.
Finally, we are at the part of our series on Compassion where we talk about “action.” But as we delve into giving compassionate care to others, Jesus reminds us that vulnerability is an essential part of compassionate action. In our text this week, the disciples are awkward and don’t seem to understand. Jesus shows them that you have to be compassionate to yourself before the “doing” of authentic acts of compassion.
We are called to love the world as God loves the world: but that journey also involves reaching out to ourselves with care and compassion.
Jesus started his ministry by making compassion the first piece of a grand puzzle, which we are still creating today!
Compassion can be warm and tender, and it can be fierce and persistent. As we begin a fresh sermon series, Compassion Finds a Way, we'll take a close look this week at how this unique expression of love can overcome enormous obstacles.
