The main purpose of this podcast is to help build curiosity amongst the listeners on the various realms of topics that I will be discussing on the pod. It is also to challenge the status quo and go beyond the optics into the nitty gritty of the topic and get a larger and a different perspective.I'll be talking about Finance, Economic Policies, Politics, self-help and all the learnings I have gathered from everyday life. This is part II of my conversation with Sandip Ghose. In this part we look at the growth story of India and what are the challenges for the new Government.
Just a disclaimer, this was recorded before 4th June Election results, since then Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed a third term in office but results delivered a far narrower than expected victory for his party the BJP. The results indicated that Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, won by far the most parliamentary seats, and that he would become only the second Indian leader to start a third straight term. But it would need to rely on smaller parties in its coalition to form a government.
After three fiery months of nonstop politicking, the grandest show of democracy in human history, is finally drawing to a close. With the elections almost over and the results less than 10 days away, uncertainty regarding the poll outcome will continue until 4th June, when it will be announced, although exit polls on 1st June after the final phase should provide some clarity on the likely results.
This general election has been reduced to a choice between the well oiled election power house the BJP qua the NDA and an assemble cast of misfits. It was freely contested, by and large seamless in execution at the administrative level, and digital, that it has now firmly established itself as the gold standard globally. So, what is the state of play as we enter the last phase of polling and what can we expect post 4th June when the dust settles and the elected constituents get to the grind. As we wind down this year, let us look back and contemplate the past year in terms of economic growth and discuss what's the outlook for the upcoming year. In September 2023, financial well being sentiment found much needed stability, although the Fed held rates and signaled elevated rates for longer, but there are some who predict the
US. economic growth will buckle under mounting headwinds early next year with a shallow recession. That's what Nouriel Roubini and others have predicted. Real GDP will grow at about 2. 2 percent and then fall to about 0. 8%. The consumer spending actually held up despite the elevated inflation and high interest rates in the past , couple of months and the growth that seemed to be weakened in the first quarter also bounced back in Q2. All those are the numbers, but to package all that I have with me on my pod today, Mr. Arvind Mallik. He's the managing partner of KMF Investments which is a pure pay for performance private investment partnership based out of Denton, Texas. KMF seeks a long term capital appreciation by investing in companies whose intrinsic value is significantly higher than the market price. And since its founding in 2008 KMF has found opportunities in the world dominating franchises, hard assets below replacement cost businesses at large, discounts to liquidation value, and firms with beneficial exposure to rising interest rates.
The whole concept behind this is retaining value and increasing the value addition as we call it in finance terms. And Mr. Malik has education to back it up with a degree in chemical engineering and bioengineering from UC Berkeley, and also has a MS in chemical engineering from MIT.
