Every Mother's Day, while families celebrate with bouquets and brunches, not all of us are reaching for the confetti. On "Demo with Mo," we peel back the layers of this holiday to explore the pain, love, and complexity that come with maternal relationships. Some of us might be gearing up for joyous festivities, but for others, it's a time that highlights strained or broken bonds. This episode is a tribute to every shade of mother-child connection, offering understanding without judgement and a safe space to navigate the mixed emotions this day can stir up.

The issue of obeying versus honoring our parents is a debate that doesn't just ruffle feathers—it can churn up a whole storm. I share my insights from a recent thought-provoking sermon that sparked a fiery discussion around this topic, especially within the Christian community. We'll sift through scriptural teachings, contrasting the call for children's obedience with the adult responsibility to honor, and why these distinctions matter. It's more than just semantics; this conversation is about the intersection where personal growth, mental health, and spirituality meet family expectations.

Finally, as Mother's Day looms, we turn our attention to the art of setting boundaries. It's a skill that can transform our relationships with our parents into something respectful and truly honoring—without stifling who we are. We reflect on the importance of including those who've shaped us in our joys and successes, and extend a hand of comfort to those who may be grieving. So join us on this heartfelt journey through the trials and triumphs of parental relationships, and perhaps you'll discover a new perspective on what it means to honor our parents.

Guess what? Only 31% of couples undergo premarital counseling, and merely 19% seek some form of couples therapy. Shocked? So was I. In this episode of Demo with Mo, we unpack the often misunderstood topic of couples therapy - from the surprising statistics around its usage, to the benefits of investing time and effort into improving your relationship. We pull back the curtain on the significance of premarital counseling, the importance of having hard conversations early, and even touch upon the delicate topic of when it might be time to go see a professional.

You might think you're alone in struggling to keep your relationship afloat - you're not. The societal pressure, shame game, and denial discourage couples from seeking help. The stigma surrounding therapy often hinders couples from working on their relationship. But hey, let's bust this myth - a relationship requiring effort is not doomed to fail! Dr. John Gottman has curated a list of 15 telltale signs that could suggest it's time for you and your partner to consider couples counseling. Remember, it's not a sign of weakness, but a step towards a healthier and happier relationship.

Lastly, I share my journey of navigating therapy. From the enriching experiences, to the common barriers faced by many. The importance of finding a qualified, impartial therapist cannot be stressed enough - it can make or break your therapy experience. No more stigma, no more shame; it's time to open up the conversation on couples therapy. In the end, I encourage you to invest in your relationship and seek help when needed. Tune in for this heart-to-heart on Demo with Mo. It's more than just a podcast - it's a resource to help navigate the complex world of relationships.

Ever found yourself wondering why family arguments always escalate, or why certain expectations from relatives feel damaging rather than supportive? If so, you're not alone. On our latest episode, I sit down with my step-sister, Kiersten Lewis, to tackle these tough questions and shed light on the often-overlooked topic of toxic family behaviors that are normalized by society. We delve into societal expectations that children are somehow obligated to fulfill their parents' emotional needs, and we explore the harmful impact such expectations can have.

Through our conversation, we address a variety of issues from the pressure to always agree with family members, to the deceit of parents keeping secrets from their children. We reference Kirk Franklin’s documentary that highlights the damaging ripple effect secrets and lies can have within a family dynamic. Underscoring the need for honest communication, we challenge the notion that family members have an unspoken right to control our decisions and dictate our self-understanding.

As the discussion evolves, we touch on the uncomfortable yet crucial task of confronting and resolving conflicts within relationships. Kiersten courageously shares her personal experiences and insights, reinforcing the idea that conflict, when addressed, can be an opportunity for growth. Tune in to this episode for an enlightening exploration of family dynamics and an empowering call for personal autonomy and conflict resolution in our relationships. Unpack the hard truths with us and let's navigate the complexities of family life together.

We enter into marriage not only to forge a bond with our spouses but also to embrace the role of being a bonus mom or a son or daughter-in-law. Each year for Mother's Day, we focus on the achievement, relationships, and the incredible role that mothers play. Whether these are biological moms, step/bonus moms, mothers-in-law or adoptive moms, there are so many different roles and kinds of relationships that we have with them. The month of May is dedicated to all mothers, and in honor of this, we will talk about the different relationships we can build with our mothers and children.

We recognize the unique role mothers play. Throughout this month, we'll be exploring how we can nurture these relationships and show appreciation to these women who have given so much of themselves to raise and support their children along the way. We also recognize and understand that everyone does not have this kind of relationship with their mom. Some have broken relationships, some were abandoned, some are grieving on Mother's Day every year and most don't acknowledge these relationships exist. If you are a mother, this is for you. If you're not a mother, you have a mother, and this is also for you. So, join us in celebrating the diverse world of motherhood, and let's honor all the different types of love that make it so special!

Join the conversation with your host Monique and her lovely twelve-year-old daughter, Mariyah, as they kick off The Mother's Day Series. It is impossible to have a healthy relationship without setting boundaries. Boundaries are an important part of any relationship, whether it is between two people or within a marriage. Boundaries help us to understand each other’s needs and respect each other’s space, allowing us to build trust and maintain healthy relationships. This can help both parties thrive and avoid unnecessary conflict. However, without clearly communicated boundaries, it can be hard for someone to know how they should interact with you, leaving them feeling confused and frustrated, so it’s important to speak up about what your limits are.

Join the conversation and learn the importance of setting boundaries in your relationships, the best ways to do it, and what makes others respect and value the boundaries you set. Sasha Harris-Greenidge, a Certified IGNITE Mindset Coach, joins us to help us unravel this concept. She holds a BA in Psychology. She is also a wife and mother of 2 beautiful children.

Notable Quotes * Everybody is different, so it’s important to understand yourself and the type of people you want in your circles. * Having couple friends can keep you accountable, give you a new perspective and save you a lot of heartache. * Surround yourself with people who are not afraid of telling you you’re wrong. * You will get good and bad advice; take what will benefit you and be a stepping stone for your relationship. * Be mindful of the type of couples you hang around with; just because they're married doesn't mean they're the type of people you want to hang out with. * Vulnerability is a big challenge when making ‘couple friends’; you have to know who to trust and who not to trust.

Life after Divorce with Alisha Chandler & Annette McElroyDivorce is an unfortunate reality for many couples. No matter how much love and commitment you have for each other, sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Although it is never a preferred outcome, it is often the only way to move forward and find new happiness when a relationship has become too toxic or damaged to repair.

It is important to understand that we are not advocating divorce because that is against Christian principles. But imagine this. You sleep in separate rooms with your spouse and do not talk to each other. You both live separate lives seeing other people or one partner habitually breaks the marriage covenant with no remorse. Your partner sells drugs and beats you or your children. Is that what God wants for you? Would you just stay in that marriage? Is there an allowance for situations where divorce is the only thing that makes sense?

Well, to answer these questions and many more, join this conversation with our guests, Alisha Chandler & Annette McElroy. They open up to share their vulnerabilities and the wisdom they have gained over the years after divorce. Alisha is an accomplished successful multiple business owner with more than 17 years of experience in property management, graphic design, and compliance consultancy. She is inspired daily by her husband of 14 years in marriage and her four children. Annette was married for six years before getting a divorce, and she has been in that state for 29 years now. Annette has one daughter and two grandchildren.

We also conclude with a sister talk as the trio opens up to each other in a way they have never done. You don’t want to miss this!

Growing Up In The Church Part One

Growing up in the church can be a challenging experience for children, especially those whose parents are leaders or esteemed members of the church. Being a pastor's child can be even more difficult because there are a lot of misconceptions and expectations that people have for children growing up in the church. They often equate growing up in the church with being religious, which can make it difficult to be a child and ask for the support that you need. This can result in trauma, rebellion, children being more isolated, and struggling with the expectations that others have for them. Expecting children to live up to the same standards as their parents is not only unhelpful but also unrealistic. As parents, we must understand our children are different from us and each other, and they need different parenting styles to realize their full potential.

Join today's conversation, part 1, and learn more about growing up in the church. The guests, Christie Hatten, Amanda Furdge, and Laura Furdge, are siblings and pastor’s kids who grew up in the church. In the episode, they share their experiences as pastor’s kids, the challenges they went through growing up in the church, the misconceptions and expectations people have, the lessons they learned, life as adults and parents, and how they are transforming the next generation.

Tune in!

During this episode, you will learn about;

[00:24] Episode intro and a bit about today's guests, Christie, Amanda, and Laura

[08:34] What Christie, Amanda, and Laura learned about themselves in 2022

[11:26] How old Christie, Amanda, and Laura were when they started going to church

[15:28] What they love about being part of the church, especially at New Life

[18:41] Some of the challenges that they have faced growing up in the church

[28:04] The misconceptions that people have about PK (preachers' kids)

[33:56] How Christie, Amanda, and Laura support young people in the ministry

[50:23] Christie and Amanda’s experiences escaping from their childhood struggles

[54:30] Finding ways to learn and operate in the space that you are in

[01:00:17] Parenting and training your child in the way they should go, and in the church

[01:07:19] Ending the show!

Tune in for part 2!

Notable Quotes * We’re human, and we’re flawed, there will always be challenges whenever people are together. * The more you grow in God, the more you learn spiritually and reflect it in your life. * We can only operate from the spaces we’re in, so we must be conscious of giving our best. * Train your child up in the way he should go: when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Prov. 22:6.) * As parents, one mistake we make is parenting our kids the same way; our kids are different.

No more saying we have to be strong, no more having to pretend we have it all together. Truly grasping the fact that it is okay to not be okay. Most people have struggled in relationships because they have tolerated mediocrity and the bare minimum. Among the reasons they accept such mediocrity includes; avoiding confrontations, not wanting to come off as needy, being afraid to ask for more, saying it was once okay, or maybe they don’t realize their true value or worth.

It comes a time when the bare minimum is no longer enough. You will crave more from your spouse, family or friend. You will be forced to clearly let them know what you need instead of assuming that they will figure it out on their own. You may also have to create healthy boundaries for yourself. This is because it is nearly impossible to control the extent to which other people encroach on your space. However, you can put mechanisms in place to guide how you on how to respond or act in such scenarios.

Join me, Monique Simmons, as I help you unpack why you have accepted and tolerated the bare minimum in your relationships, sometimes even without your knowledge. Get some tips on standing tall and demanding more in a loving and realistic way. Today’s episode is power-packed with tips and insights you cannot afford to miss.

Date Nights!

Dating is an important part of the life cycle of romantic relationships. It helps us to find a potential mate and understand our characteristics, desires, and needs. Once we get married, taking your spouse on dates should be natural. It’s an opportunity to learn about each other and spend time together outside your home. It can also help build trust and intimacy and strengthen the bond between you. Even with busy schedules and tight responsibilities of parenting, you should always be aware that your marriage comes first. Before everything you have was, it was only you and your partner.

Children will leave home for college or an independent life when they grow up. A good marriage is one that lasts long enough to carry you through the years when your children are no longer living under your roof. Invest in your marriage before it's too late. Many marriage waves of divorce occur once the children leave. You have never learned how to live as two people, as a couple. You were too preoccupied with children, work, other responsibilities and never prioritized your marriage.

Today’s episode is power-packed with tips and insights on creating a strong and romantic marriage that survives the test of time. Listen and learn the hidden treasure in date nights with your partner.

Tune in!

During this episode, you will learn about;

[00:24] Episode intro on today's focus and a quick update about my birthday

[03:47] The power and purpose of dating

[04:50] What a date night is, and what it is not

[07:20] The society’s scripted dating market and why you need to consider what works

[08:59] Why do most couples stop dating once they get married?

[11:23] How my marriage of 12 years with an amazing man has been nothing, but pure bliss

[14:40] Love your children but deeply invest in your marriage

[16:13] Your marriage comes first, then children. Prioritize it.

[17:21] How my husband and I intentionally chose to take a paradigm shift

[22:28] Ideas you can borrow from us to start prioritizing your marriage

[25:29] My encouragement to you in this podcast

[28:55] Today is a good day to start!

[29:21] Ending the show and call to action

Notable Quotes * Dating is the glue to a successful courtship that leads to marriage. It neither ends when you say “I DO,” nor when you get into different careers or even have children. * Remember that before all the busyness of life, it was just you and your partner. * Be open to trying new things when on a date night with your partner. It is not just about connecting romantically but also about gaining new experiences. * Most people date to marry. However, dating is much more important after marriage. * Having dates with your partner unconsciously gives your children a grasp of what a healthy relationship and marriage look like. * One day, your children will leave your home, and you’ll need to have invested in your marriage earlier on. * Be careful with comparison to other couples. You should learn from others but do what works for your relationship.

Let's Talk About Sex

Sex is a common concern. It’s affecting so many of us on a much broader scale, both inside and outside the bedroom. Yet most of us don’t talk about it the way we should. We are embarrassed to get real about sex and the things that really bother us, even with our spouses. Sex is something that we need to talk about, especially as Christians and believers. We talk about everything in the church but a lot of times, we don't talk enough about sex, and when we do talk about it, it's usually a negative connotation around it. We need to get to a place where we are comfortable in our conversations when it comes to sex. God created sex for pleasure and for us to enjoy. We have to start taking the narrative of sex back and teaching positivity outside our bedrooms. This will help us and our children to be free and have healthy and productive relationships.
Join the conversation with Dana Che as she shares her experiences, more about sex, and how you can get comfortable and confident having a conversation around sex. Dana Che is a marriage and relationship coach and the Real Relationship Talk podcast host. She is also an online pastor in a multisite and multiethnic church. Her mission is to help lead people into more fruitful relationships with the Lord and each other. She's married to her husband Shaun of 23 years, and they have 4 children together and live in Virginia Beach.

Shame is a very powerful thing, and the enemy is always trying to keep us in it.

Be open and honest with your spouse about what you don’t want, what pleases you, and what you desire.

If you have unmet expectations, this leads to disappointments, and disappointment over time leads to bitterness and resentment.

Learning How to Create Healthy Boundaries with In-laws and Extended Family with Christ-Lynn SmithHow do we create healthy boundaries with our in-laws and extended family members? How can we have conversations with our partners about protecting our relationships and marriage without it turning into a power struggle, or worse yet, the very thing that is being avoided by creating these boundaries?

In-laws are a constant struggle for some. They don't always get along with our partners, or we don't agree on managing relationships with them. This can lead to conflict and tension in relationships and marriage. In order to maintain healthy boundaries, we need to have conversations with our partners about how in-laws should be handled not to cause a rift in the marriage.

In today’s episode, I invited the podcast host of “Black Marriage Therapy,” Christ-Lynn Smith, and we discussed how to create healthy boundaries with in-laws and extended family, having conversations with our partners to get on one accord about how to protect our relationship/ marriage.

[44:48] When should couples have conversations about boundaries they want to put in place

[48:41] The need to re-adjust your boundaries in periods of transition as a couple

Notable Quotes * When you see someone go through an experience like yours, you empathize because you know how exactly it feels. * In-law relationships are unique and complex in different relationships and people. * Relationships change for the better when you are on the same page with your spouse or partner. * If you set the boundary and are consistent with it, your in-laws will fall in line because they love you and want to be part of your life. * You set boundaries around things that you believe are valuable. Things that you want to protect and keep safe. * We are afraid to set boundaries because of conflict, so we don't. However, we cause more conflict when we don't. * An In-law relationship can define your marriage. * Understand your partner's family. Build your own relationship with them.

"Wives Night In" Getting Real About All Things Marriage From A Wife's PerspectiveAs women, we are trained to do everything and care for everybody else, not ourselves. Sometimes, we get so caught up in being a wife and a mom that we forget who we are outside of those. This makes re-adjusting to the ever-changing marriage and family dynamics very hard. But knowing what you want to do as a wife and a mom, what makes you happy, and giving each other grace is what makes all the difference. You are not going to support and love your family the best if you are sacrificing yourself heavily. Find your balance and reteach your children and husband who you are to show up as your best self.

No one remains the same. We all change in the marriage journey, and reintroducing ourselves can create emotional resentments at first, but it will keep us happier and help us be better wives and moms. Forcing ourselves to be the same even when we need change can be more detrimental. Since these changes are inevitable in marriage, all you can give to your partner is to be there for them and give them more grace to thrive. Understanding that it’s just a season, and each of us has our turns will help you keep things in perspective without being selfish when it’s not your turn. Marriage should be a partnership where we encourage and support one another to be better and a better version of ourselves. It should be a give and take, sacrifice, and full of accommodation and tolerance.

Join the conversation with Amye Grant and Markisha Williams as they share their marriage experience and how they navigate change and transition to provide you with tools that you can use to keep your marriage strong and bring back the intimacy.

How to Adjust When Your Village Moves Away

It is difficult when our friends, family members, and loved ones move away. We can't help but feel a sense of loss when we lose contact with them. It can be particularly challenging when they move far away, and we have no means of being physically in contact with them. However, there are ways to make the adjustment easier on us. These include scheduling appointments, making new friends, participating in therapy, or planning in advance for future visits.

Join this conversation with Liz Tillman Nichols as we talk about what a village is, who our village is, what happens when our village moves away, and how to readjust when we move away from our village. Liz is the founder of Dope as a Mother, a teacher, mother, wife, and serial entrepreneur who has built a platform dedicated to uplifting moms and encouraging them to be exactly who they want to be.

It’s Our Anniversary!

A wedding anniversary reminds you of one of the most important days in your life. It's a day that can be captured as a decoration or photo to remind you of all the milestones you visit over this season, month, and year. Anniversaries present couples with the opportunity to reflect on their relationship thus far, while the traditions allow couples to come together to celebrate one another's achievements and love.

Today's episode is special because it is a celebration of our marriage with my husband, Corey Simmons. We just celebrated our 12th anniversary this weekend in a spectacular way. You Don’t Really Expect Women To Do It All, Do You? Why are women expected to do it all? The world is changing, and women are coming into their own. Traditionally, women have been expected to be the primary caretakers of the home and children, but times are changing. In today’s episode, we are going to talk about why society expects women to do all things, why both parties need to contribute in a marriage, and the benefits of doing what you are good at in any relationship.

Key Highlights

[02:47] How the society views women

[05:35] Why women are expected to do all things

[06:55] How time has changed

[08:36] Why both parties need to contribute to a marriage

[11:07] Doing what you are good at as a couple

Quotes

  • “You can’t compare today's time to how it was when our grandmothers were taking care of our homes because time has changed. There are so many different things that affect how things happen in the home now.”
  • “The view that the society has that women should take on the bulk of all things and still work is wrong.”
  • “For any relationship to prosper, both parties need to contribute.”
  • “In a relationship, people should do what they do best. If you love cooking, then cook.”

More often, we let fear deter us from achieving what we desire. However small it may seem, take a step of faith, get out there and trust God with the results.

Today’s episode is bitter-sweet for me as it marks our Season 2 Finale. It all dates back to August 2021, when I decided to help people on their journey. While helping others, my audience has also encouraged me in my journey.

In this episode, I appreciate everyone who has been part of the success. I share the main inspiration behind the podcast, why you should not let fear deter you no matter how small your desire might seem as well as taking a step of faith in your next move!

The Best of Season 2 Interviews
In today’s episode, we’re taking a dive into the best of Season 2 episodes, "interview style." So what we’re going to do is dive into specific episodes and pull out the nuggets and gems and put them altogether for this episode.
We're going to start off with Episode Seven from season two chasing your dreams while in a relationship where I interview husband and wife Charles and Ashley Jenkins. And then we're going to Episode Eight where I interviewed Dr. Kia Monique Jones about Mentorship in the Black Community, and then we're going to rewind just a little bit when I interviewed Ashley Jenkins on episode three, where we discuss blended families. And last but not least, we're going to end today's episode with the interview that I started the year off with, with my husband Corey in episode one with relationship goals for the new year. I really hope you guys enjoy this compilation that I'm putting together from the best moments of season two, "interview style!"

[02:51] Ep. 7: Chasing Your Dreams While in a Relationship: Interview with Ashley and Charles Jenkins

[03:19] I want to know tell us how you guys met. How did you guys become Charles and Ashley Jenkins?
Well, a lot of people don't know, we actually met online dating app. Yes, we met on a dating app. For myself, I had got on the app because I was engaged before I met my husband. And I had gotten out of a really bad relationship. So I just was like, I'm just going to, you know, get on the dating app, meet friends type of thing. And so I met my husband .

[04:30] Do you guys encourage it? (Online dating) You think that's a great place to start?
I don't think there's anything wrong with the dating app, you know, as far as a good place to start. Ashley Jenkins

[05:57] Do you guys think both parties can chase their dreams at the same time?
I believe both, both people can chase their dreams, and entrepreneurship at the same time. Charles Jenkins

[07:05] What did that look like? For you guys? Like, what if you had to give us summarization of who was chasing their dreams? And who kind of had to take the backseat while the other person chase their dreams?
To go back to our situation, personally, like Charles actually had a business before I did. So he had his own auto glass business. And so then it shifted to now I have the business and he's working. And so I think it changed for us with seasons, like it was his season, at one time because of the finances, but we just expressed like, we just don't have it where we can both pursue it at the same time. So we've both had our opportunities to support each other.

[09:48] How does that work when you're trying to raise young children and still chase your dream and your relationship?
Giving each other that time to get away and then work on yourselves is important for you have to be able to get those things done. Charles Jenkins

[11:51] Is there anything else before I let you tell my audience how to find you guys?
Just forgive. Remember why you said your I do. And I hope that y'all like each other on those days when that love tank is not as full as it was when you got married. - Ashley.
Don't give up on what you want to do or doesn't think you can't do something just because you know you look a certain way or you don't have something. Charles

[13:34] Ep. 8: Mentorship in a Black Community: Interview with Dr. Monique Jones

[14:00] If you wanted the audience to know anything about you, what would you want them to know about you, Dr. Jones?
I am a product of my environment. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, I went to Jackson public schools here. I went to high school at Jackson State University for an undergrad and for my doctoral degree as well.

[14:56] What's your definition of a mentor?
A mentor is someone that someone looks up to. It can be in a pr

Who Are You Listening To?Have you ever had someone give you an opinion based on their experience? Maybe they told you not to try something or that wouldn't work out or you shouldn't do it that way because of their perspective? Because of how it worked out for them or did not work out for them?

It's hard to make the right decision when so many people around you have their own opinions. It's easy to get confused and stressed out about what you should do. You have so many choices and it is hard to know who has the best advice for you.

It's all about knowing who to listen to. So, who should you listen to? Tune in to today’s episode to find out more!

Notable Quotes

  • Just because you had a bad or negative experience does not mean everyone else will. Don't push your negative views on others. And don't let others’ negative views influence you.
  • God’s promise for you will exceed what anyone else has to say any day, but you have to believe it for yourself.
  • God has made a promise to you a promise to restore that relationship, a promise to heal your heart, a promise to open up the windows of heaven, a promise to even give you some of the desires of your heart. Don't let what others say or think about your situation detour you. You will end up like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness when there's a promised land already waiting on you.
  • Listen to your voice. Listen to your desires. Listen to what God is saying to you. Listen to the direction he's trying to take your life.
  • What may have been impossible for someone else in their life, doesn't have to be your experience.

Why is Communicating in Relationships So Hard?Communicating in relationships is so hard. It's hard because we're all different. As much as we wish we could, we can't read each other's minds. We don't know what another person is thinking or feeling unless they tell us. And when it comes to relationships, it's hard to know when to tell your partner something.

So the question I often get asked is, how do you communicate in a relationship? How do you talk about things? Or how do you tell someone what you want or need from them without hurting their feelings or pushing them away?

If you’ve ever struggled with having a conversation with your partner or your spouse, you don’t feel heard, you don’t feel validated, or you don’t know what to say. If you want to tell them the truth but you don’t want to hurt their feelings or you feel like you’re walking on eggshells. Whatever it is that has to do with any difficulties with communication, this episode is for you.

Key Highlights

[03:29] What people struggle with the most in a relationship

[03:50] What the Word of God says about communication

[09:17] Whatever you say, let it be beneficial to others

[11:10] Having uncomfortable conversations with your partner

[14:55] Being honest and truthful to your partner

[17:43] Have self-talk before approaching your partner

[20:44] Scheduling a conversation and why it’s important

[25:29] When is the right time to have a conversation?

[27:08] The goal for communication

[29:48] Taking a break and rescheduling a conversation.

Notable Quotes

  • If anyone can control his tongue, it proves that he has perfect control over himself.
  • Even though the winds are strong, so also the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage he can do.
  • Men have trained or can train every kind of animal or bird that lives in every kind of reptile and fish. But no human being can train the tongue, it is always ready to pour out His daily poison. - (James 2:2-10).
  • It shouldn't be where on one hand, you're praising and thanking God. And then, on the other hand, you're cursing somebody out, it shouldn't be that way.
  • Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. That it may benefit those who listen. - (Ephesians 4:29)
  • If you're not able to discuss it, if you don't feel comfortable sharing, if it doesn't feel like a safe space for you to share, those feelings don't go away. You begin to build resentment against your partner.
  • Satan hates marriage. He hates unity. He hates relationships and families being healthy and whole, he hates it. So anything he can do to break that to cause division or separation, whatever he can do, he will do it.
  • Even if it's uncomfortable, even if it's hard, even if it will cause confusion, or little rift between you and your partner, have the conversation.
  • Be specific on whatever it is that you want to talk about.
  • The goal for communication should be to understand, not be right.

Making Your Partner A PriorityHave you ever felt that you are not a priority in your partner’s life, you’re receiving their leftovers, or they are not spending enough time with you? You have to make your partner feel good and make time to connect with them. It is one thing to tell them they are your priority and a whole different ball game to ensure this is reflected.

More often, people let their hobbies, work, family, friends or even kids hinder them from connecting with their partners. Your hobbies can be a great thing, your friends, kids, your work can be awesome, but all those things can kill a relationship if they are not in their rightful place.

In today’s episode, I share how you can do just that. From understanding what it entails to make your partner a priority, things that can take away priority in your relationship and practical approaches to change this dynamic. If you’re looking for ways to improve your relationship and make your partner a priority, this episode is for you!

Key Highlights

[02:03] What priority means

[03:33] Examples of things that can take priority in your marriage or relationship

[04:45] How putting your kids first affects your marriage

[08:13] Prioritizing your friends over your relationship

[11:17] Balancing your ministry and your marriage

[12:41] Putting your spouse first before your family

[13:43] Practical ways to change the dynamic

[17:15] Having check-ins with your spouse

[20:19] Scheduling time to connect with your partner

[21:35] Creating a safe space for your partner

[22:58] Trying to see things from your partner’s perspective

[24:57] Why you should make your partner a priority

Notable Quotes

  • Our children do not come before our spouses.
  • After God, our relationship with our spouse comes first
  • Even when you are in a relationship, you are still an individual. You still want to be the best version of yourself. If you are the best version of yourself, you will bring that into the relationship, and it will thrive.
  • The more your partner feels that a hobby or an extracurricular activity is coming before them, the more they will resent it or don't even want you to bring it up.
  • Your home is your first ministry. You can not skip home and go to the church to do ministry while skipping your first ministry.
  • If your partner comes to you and says they’re feeling left out, neglected, or not connected with you, please do not get defensive, don’t be upset, listen to them.
  • The time to address a complaint is not when your partner is trying to address what’s going on with them.
  • We do things we want to do. We make time for those things that are important to us.
  • When people cannot share how they truly feel, when they feel they don’t have a safe space, they keep it in till they can’t anymore, then they blow up.

Genuine relationships are based on like-minded people who have similar interests in whatever they like to do.
Children are beautiful relationships, and being married is beautiful, but those are additions to you as an individual.
You will never know until you try.
People won’t know what you need until you open your mouth and ask.
If you put the best foot forward and approach people with the utmost respect, you will have someone to help you.
If you feel you’re too busy to be a mentor, maybe this is not the adequate time to be a mentor.

Stop Clocking My UterusMost black women face society pressure to have babies. When will you have a family, a baby, or add another baby? But they fail to understand the reason behind it all.

Some women go through a lot of complications when it comes to having a baby. It could be infertility, miscarriages, effects of birth controls, or even pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes. Although you might feel you are doing the right thing by asking them why they do not have kids, it is always good to keep your unsolicited advice to yourself and be sensitive.

Black Men & Mental HealthOne in ten black men are living with depression. Most men in the black community think they can figure it all out by themselves and do not know how to talk about their emotional experiences.

We teach boys not to be cry babies or share their emotions. However, as they grow, it leads to isolation, anger, and resentment, which affects their marriage or other relationships with people.

In today’s episode, I share the main reasons men do not seek out help, the challenges black men face, and how we can support black men in being vulnerable. This episode has all you need for your mental health, being a better version of yourself, and how we can break down the cycle for a better future generation.

Key highlights

[02:32] Reasons men do not seek help

[07:47] Challenges black men face

[10:34] Death rate by suicide for black men versus black women.

[11:25] Vulnerability for black men

[13:19] How vulnerability in men affected my marriage

[14:47] Supporting your men

[15:00] Getting the help you need and being the best version of yourself

Notable Quotes

  • They do not feel safe sharing their part because it might be looked at as a weakness. It might be used against them.
  • It’s hard when you want to talk about everything going on with you, but you can’t find someone you can relate to that you see yourself in.
  • Do not suffer in silence because of cost since some plans will cover this if you have insurance.
  • It’s time for our black men to feel safe to be vulnerable and share their emotions.
  • It takes a strong person to admit that they need help.
  • God is enough, but He has given us resources to assist us. Use your resources.

In-law RelationshipsA lot of people when they hear the word in-laws, they automatically assume the parents. But the name stretches way further than that to any relative or family member of your spouse.

While many couples ignore having a discussion about building healthy in-law relationships when they get married, this issue has become one of the major problems in marriage if one side of the family is toxic. If not properly addressed, things could easily escalate and even lead to divorce. It’s always better to have this discussion early enough, set boundaries, and know how both sides can work together to support your marriage.

In today's episode, I share with you how you can just do that. From knowing the signs your in-laws are toxic, some positive traits to look out for, how you can deal with them, and build a better relationship. • If I’m perfectly honest and transparent with you, there were times at the beginning of our marriage when I thought I would walk away because of the issues that we dealt with, with our in-laws.

  • Do not sacrifice your marriage to please your parents. Don’t sacrifice your marriage to please your siblings.
