We talk to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County, AZ’s longest-running Sheriff. During his 23-year tenure, he became known for his unconventional jail management. This led him to be branded “America’s Toughest Sheriff.”
About Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio served as Maricopa County's Sheriff from 1993-2016, making him the Arizona county's longest-serving sheriff. He's had an extensive 55-year career in law enforcement, with honorable service in the DEA, as well as the United States Army. While the head of MCSO, Sheriff Arpaio's love of animals and zero-tolerance policy for animal cruelty inspired him to create the agency's elite Animal Crimes Unit, as well as MASH (Maricopa Animal Safe Haven). This nonprofit, no-kill shelter for abused and neglected animals is still operational today. Sheriff Joe is known for the iconic pink underwear that he had inmates wear, as well as the infamous Tent City housing. He fused both traditional and nontraditional programs during his tenure, such as chain gangs, a posse, a Jail Idol contest, and a Superbowl party, complete with pink popcorn. He spent two nights in his own facility to experience what his inmates did, as well as to listen to their input. His unconventional approach and no-nonsense policies earned him notoriety nationwide, ultimately deeming him “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” Love him or hate him, he was the original jail disruptor.
