The Power of the Pause, Part Two: What the Pause Actually Looks Like"Pausing sounds simple until you're in the middle of a conflict, your nervous system is on fire, and every cell in your body wants to either blow up or disappear. In part two, Amy gets honest about what avoiding the pause actually looks like — the spin, the obsessing, the replaying of conversations at 2am — and what it looks and feels like to actually use it. She breaks down how to size your pause to match your emotional temperature, what to do inside the pause to move forward instead of just going numb, and why responsibility and power are always a package deal. If you've ever confused "waiting for it to blow over" with actually dealing with something, this one's for you. P.S. Amy was listening to the Curiosity Shop Podcast on her way up I-40 — and Brené Brown's coaching segment with Aiko Bethea (last 20 minutes) basically confirmed the universe wanted her talking about the pause today. You said yes when you meant no. You're grinding through something you dread. You're backed into a corner and scratching your way out — and none of it is getting you where you actually want to go. In this first of two August episodes, Amy introduces one of the most underrated tools in her coaching practice: the pause button. Through a real client story that will feel uncomfortably familiar, Amy makes the case that the pause isn't weakness, isn't procrastination, and isn't avoiding the hard thing. It's where your power actually lives. Short, punchy, and perfectly timed for the back-to-school chaos heading your way. In part two of this breathwork conversation, Amy and Michelle get personal. Michelle shares how her own seasons of loss and life upheaval led her deeper into breathwork — and how what she found there became something she couldn't keep to herself. Amy opens up about her own journey through divorce and relationship endings, and how lived experience becomes the most powerful thing you can offer someone else. The conversation moves into the world of holotropic and facilitated breathwork — what it looks and feels like in a room full of strangers, what happens when a sleepy muscle wakes back up during a breathwork session, and why breath bypasses the limits of language to reach places talk therapy sometimes can't. Rich, real, and deeply relatable. Health coach Amy Chang sits down with her friend and breathwork facilitator Michelle Gallagher for a conversation that will make you look at every inhale and exhale differently. Michelle shares how her background in fitness and personal training led her to discover that the way people breathe — or don't — was showing up in their pain, their performance, and their disconnection from their own bodies. From frozen pelvic floors to athletes who couldn't engage their muscles no matter how hard they trained, Michelle explains why breath is the missing piece most people never think to address. A bonus fifth Monday in June brings an unexpectedly raw and beautiful episode. Health coach Amy Chang set out to wrap up a month of fun and play, but life had other plans. After the sudden loss of her beloved German Shepherd Ginny, Amy shares a deeply personal reflection on something many high-achieving, growth-oriented people know all too well: the quiet, exhausting belief that if we just prepare enough, learn enough, and do enough, we can protect ourselves from pain. Spoiler — we can't. Amy explores the fine line between healthy growth and using self-improvement as armor against the unpredictability of life, and introduces the upcoming Healthy Life book club reading No Cure for Being Human by Kate Bowler — a book that speaks directly to this tension. If you've ever over-researched, over-planned, or over-optimized your way through something scary, this one will hit home. Grab a tissue and give yourself some grace. Connect with Amy here! This is the one where Amy runs. In a giant blue poncho. Through a forest. In the rain. With absolute unbridled joy. And it is everything. In this final June episode, Amy and Karla wrap up their month on the Camino with the parts that are hardest to put into words — walking into the cathedral at Santiago, receiving communion with zero question of worthiness, laying collected objects down in the square and finally letting go, and then trying to come home and re-enter a life that somehow feels both familiar and completely different. They also get honest about the hardest part nobody warns you about: re-entry. The quiet grief of leaving a vulnerable, intentional, fully-present community and going back to litter boxes and unpaid bills. If you have ever come back from a retreat, a trip, a program, or any deeply transformative experience and thought, how do I keep this — this episode is your answer. And the closing reminder from Karla is one you will want to write down: you don't have to go to the Camino to go on a pilgrimage. You can start right outside your front door. Ready to wake up? Whether it's your family, your team at work, your friend group, or fourteen pilgrims walking the coast of Portugal — every group goes through the same stages: form, norm, storm, reform, and break apart. This week Amy and Karla get specific about what that looked like on the Camino, and more importantly, what it revealed about each of them. Amy discovers she is almost always either at the front or the back of the pack — and never in the middle. Karla learns something powerful about leadership, louder voices, and the cost of avoiding conflict in the moment. And somewhere between a swamp detour, instant Nescafé, and the fastest pilgrim in the group, there is a genuinely useful framework for understanding why groups are hard, why they are worth it, and what you can learn about yourself when you are asked to move at someone else's pace. If you have ever struggled with being part of a group, leading one, or just surviving one — this episode is your people. Last week Amy admitted she mostly just wanted to escape her life when she signed up for the Camino. This week, she tells you what actually happened when she got there — and it is tender, raw, funny, and genuinely miraculous. From blisters that should have stopped her to a stranger on a cobblestone street who blew her a kiss and changed everything, this episode is about what becomes possible when you slow down enough to notice. Amy and Karla also unpack one of the most profound questions a pilgrimage will ask of you: can you rest? Can you stop pushing through? Can you let yourself be cared for? For the overachievers, the caretakers, and the people who are last on their own list — this one is going to hit close to home. Plus, Karla shares her own experience of tending to others' pain and what she learned about the difference between witnessing suffering and internalizing it. That distinction alone is worth the listen. Curious about pilgrimages or spiritual direction? June is here and so is a very special guest — Karla Woggon, retired Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and pilgrimage leader. Amy and Karla just returned from walking the Camino de Santiago in Portugal, and this month they are unpacking all of it — the walking, the transformation, the unexpected, and the mess in between. In this first episode, Karla shares what a pilgrimage actually is, why you don't have to be religious to go on one, and how taking or leading dozen pilgrimages across the world — from the John Muir Trail to the Holy Land to the coast of Portugal — changed the way she sees everything. Spoiler: she now sees all of life as a pilgrimage, and after this episode, you might too. Amy also opens up about why she signed up a year before she left, what she was running from, and what she was quietly hoping to find. If you've ever felt like life has been dragging you through something you didn't sign up for, this episode will reframe that in a way that might just change everything. ou've got the plan. You've had the plan. You've tweaked the plan, revised the plan, and perfected the plan — and somehow you're still right here, not doing the plan. Sound familiar? This week Amy wraps up May's new beginnings series with the stage she calls "fixing to" — that maddening preparation phase where everything is ready except you. With refreshing honesty and a lot of humor, she breaks down exactly what keeps smart, capable women stuck between having a plan and actually pulling the trigger — perfectionism, fear of failure, lack of confidence, and the exhaustion of having tried and failed one too many times. She also takes you all the way through action and maintenance, and makes the case that grace isn't just a nice idea — it's the actual engine of lasting change. If you've ever deflected a compliment, blamed the pants, or quietly given up on something you worked hard for, this one is going to hit home. The bottom line? You only need a tiny bit more courage than you have fear. Just a tiny bit. And any action — literally any action — points you somewhere new. May's series wraps here, but June is coming in hot with something really special — Amy's spiritual pilgrimage to Portugal, unpacked with her fearless travel companion. You won't want to miss it. You know that thing you've been meaning to deal with? The habit, the relationship, the health issue, the job — the one where you keep saying "someday" or "when the kids are older" or "when I finally have more time"? Welcome to the contemplation stage — and you are not alone here. This week Amy gets refreshingly honest, sharing her own "thinking about it" moments, including the end of her marriage, to illuminate what this stage really looks and feels like from the inside. Spoiler: it can feel like progress, but nothing is actually moving yet. The good news? There are two very specific signs that tell you when you're beginning to move through it — and one of them might surprise you. If you've ever felt stuck, embarrassed, confused, or like you've been circling the same problem for years, this episode will make you feel seen, understood, and just motivated enough to take one small step forward. Before the big change. Before the decision. Before the action plan. There is a stage that most people skip right over — or beat themselves up for being stuck in. It's called thinking about thinking about it, and it might just be the bravest place you can be. This week Amy gets real about what it means to crack the door open on something you've been avoiding — not to fix it, not to overhaul your life, but just to notice it. To let the truth come a little closer. If you've ever heard the same loving feedback from the people in your life over and over and kept dismissing it, or if there's an area of your life that has friction you keep calling "fine" — this episode is going to feel uncomfortably familiar in the best possible way. In this episode of Healthy AF, Amy Chang explores service as an expression of love — not obligation, guilt, or pressure.

So many of us give endlessly to others while neglecting ourselves. Amy invites you to look at where and how you serve — at home, at work, and in your community — and ask what’s really motivating that service. Through a personal story, she shows how love creates sustainable, meaningful service, even when it’s uncomfortable.

The conversation then turns inward: How do you serve yourself? From small daily habits to big boundary-setting moments, self-service can be a powerful act of love. If you’re tired of doing everything because you “should,” this episode offers a gentler, more honest way forward.

✨ Reflection questions: Where am I serving from love — and where from obligation? How do I serve myself in ways that truly nourish me? What might I let go of if it isn’t rooted in care?

February is all about love — but not just the romantic kind. In this episode of Healthy AF, health coach Amy explores a powerful question: What if love — not fear, shame, or pressure — became the reason you take care of yourself? So many high-achievers are running on empty, caring for everyone else at home, at work, and in their communities… while their own needs fall to the bottom of the list. Health habits often come from a place of “I should,” “I have to,” or “I can’t keep living like this.” But those motivations burn out fast.Amy introduces a different foundation: love as a sustainable motivator.Self-love, service, and compassion can fuel the daily habits that actually stick — from how you eat and sleep to how you set boundaries and manage your energy. She shares a personal example of shifting from fear-based health goals to love-based ones, and why that mindset change makes healthy behaviors feel supportive instead of punishing. This episode also kicks off February’s theme, inviting you to notice:* What’s really driving your routines and decisions * Whether your habits are rooted in care or criticism * How love can make hard things feel lighter and more sustainable

If you’re successful on paper but exhausted in real life… if you’re constantly showing up for others but struggling to show up for yourself… this conversation is your permission slip to build health from a place of kindness instead of pressure.✨ Your homework this week: Start looking at your daily habits and ask, “Is love at the root of this — or something less sustainable like fear?” Because Healthy AF doesn’t start with restriction.
It starts with love. Connect with Amy here!

This is a conversation I have with clients and potential clients ALL THE TIME! I hope you can relate. Do you ever set a goal and then when you accomplish it, you don't feel as awesome as you thought you were going to? Yep, me too. Here's the question to ask when setting goals: "What do I think I'm gonna get when I hit the goal that I say you want?" Most of us, without asking this question, lack clarity. We end up hitting a goal that is only 10% of what we actually wanted (but never said). Listen and hear how this coaching question unfolds clarity on why clients actuallywant that goal in the first place. This episode is dedicated to YOUR questions! We covered two for this segment and they are BIG ones! Plateau busters and starting steps for consistency in nutrition and exercise changes.

What to do when the dreaded plateau hits?

3 tips and 2 no-nos

  1. Track everything.

  2. Change something up.

  3. Look at stress and sleep.

  4. Avoid the "just do more" grinding away.

  5. Avoid how the beat-up, defeatist negative self-talk.

Nutrition and consistency at the gym - how to start?

Nutrition is the answer to so many questions that pop up on our health and wellness journeys. Here's a little taste of how to start:

Nutrition - think of adding in, not taking out. Instead of taking out your sweets, add in more protein, like a nice chocolate protein shake or a yummy protein bar. Add in that glass of water first thing in the morning or a salad before your meals. No need to FORCE yourself to let go of all your vices at one time.

As for exercise and consistency - start small for at least the first few weeks. Then add in some bigger pushes!

Amy Chang, MS, RN, NBC-HWC Hey there! I am thrilled to share a little about me so you can get a sense of the passion and dedication that is present at Healthy Living Coaching.

From Amy...I started my professional life in 1995 as a Registered Nurse with an Associate’s degree in Nursing. I loved my time at the bedside taking care of, educating, providing dignity, and comforting patients and their families. In 1999, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my bachelor’s degree from University of Rochester (NY), and in 2002 finished my Master of Science in Nursing degree, becoming a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. Later that year I was honored to pass my board exam and be a national board certified Adult, Acute Care, Critical Care Advanced Practice Nurse.

Meanwhile, in my personal life, I became a mom in March of 2001 (Maggie), October of 2002 (Max), and again in November of 2004 (Molly)! It was a busy time and I chose to leave my nursing career for the moment and take on being a full-time Mom. In addition to being with the children, I found two passions: CrossFit, when I became an athlete, trainer, and eventually gym owner, and Hickory Day School, where I was president of the board and volunteer.

As the children grew and my life shifted, I looked to reignite my professional life. I never let go of the nurse in me and now I had a new love for training people at CrossFit as well. I knew I loved both roles for the same reason — I got to educate and inspire people to take control of their health, have more confidence and self-efficacy, and thrive in their lives!

I just wasn’t sure the best way for me to make this a career…

Then BOOM! The perfect email at the perfect time perfectly intersected my passions. I opened an email from Duke Integrative Medicine offering the Health and Wellness Coaching program and I was lit!! Health coaching was my next big chapter. I attended the Foundation and Certification program offered at Duke over the next year (2019-2020) and Healthy Living Coaching was born!

Since then I have worked with people to create inspired health for lit up living! It has been a calling for me and a privilege to walk alongside people as they take responsibility and power in areas of their health that have been lagging behind. Together, we go from defeated, anxious and out of control of their health to in control, “lighter” (in both ways!) and finding everyday joy.
