In the wake of the tragic shooting in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine people dead earlier this month, the nation has turned its attention to gun control measures. Is the accessibility of guns to blame for the rash of deadly shooting incidences that have transpired in our country recently? Where do you stand on this issue? On this episode of Paradigm Shift, we will hear thoughts on this topic from Charlie Blek, who is the president of the Orange County chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. We also have UCI Professor Elliot Currie joining us on the program, Professor Currie specializes in Criminology, Law and Society and will be sharing a sociological viewpoint to gun violence in America.
On this program of Paradigm Shift, we discuss a federal lawsuit and civil rights complaint filed against Harvard University alleging racial biases against Asian Americans. Since a federal lawsuit was filed against Harvard University in November of last year, more than 64 Asian-American organizations have stepped up accusing Harvard for discrimination in its admissions practices. They are asking them to open their admission data to the public. On the show, you will hear from Claire Kim, a University of California Irvine Professor of Political Science and Asian-American Studies and from Sarah Yang, who is the Vice-President of the Chinese-American Association of Orange County.
Police agencies around the country have been reviewing their Use of Deadly Force policies and have implemented more training for their officers in the wake of the officer-involved shooting deaths making headlines the past couple years. Today we will be hearing from Lieutenant Steve Marcin of the Anaheim Police Department. He will be sharing the steps APD takes to address its Use of Deadly Force policy. We will also be speaking to Orange County resident Ron Thomas. Ron is the father of Kelly Thomas, a homeless and mentally ill man who was beaten and tasered to death by Fullerton police back in 2011.
