I was drawn to the content of this book, a relationship between two high school sweethearts who meet in their senior years. It’s beautiful written, and I loved interviewing Walter Bennett

He’s is a writer and former lawyer, judge and law professor residing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

His first novel, Leaving Tuscaloosa, won the Alabama Author’s Award, and was a finalist for the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction and the Crook’s Corner Book Prize for debut novels set in the American South. He has published short fiction and essays in both print and online journals, including Blackbird, The Courtland Review, Eclipse and Voices.

Synopsis of The First Last Kiss:

Ace Sinclair, now in his seventies, has one eye on a hurricane churning up from the south and the other on his old high school sweetheart, J’nelle Reade, whom he has invited to his Outer Banks beach house for a sentimental journey into their pasts. But the past is with them more than they know, and they are soon pulled into a haunting search among old memories for betrayals, mistakes, missed chances and ultimately the hard truths of their lives. As a dangerous hurricane turns in the Atlantic and heads their way, time runs short, and they must choose between the tidal pull of old dreams and the future’s wide unknown.

This month’s podcasts will be in two parts and feature legendary woodwind musician, George Young. Part one will focus on the early days. Both musicians and non-musicians will be inspired by George’s focus and discipline in developing his musical gift.

When first I started working with my husband, Alfred, over 40 years ago, he told me tales of his years with George Young. They had met in Wildwood, NJ, during a time when live music was plentiful and clubs were packed. They worked together for a few years as the George Young Review, which played show houses in many major metropolitan cities and also performed on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Then George went on to take his place among jazz’s most respected “session musicians” whose work in recording studios for record companies, films, television productions and commercials has kept him pretty much flying under the radar However, he has also performed and toured internationally with countless bands and is a wonderful composer.

After gigs, Alfred and I used to drive into NYC to see him perform at Mikel’s or jazz brunches on Sundays and when we recorded our two CDs, George played on several tunes.

This podcast will be in two parts, the first focusing on his early days. The second part will air two weeks later.

George says “Keep Moving!” and he sure does!

You can learn more and contact George on his web site.

You may not know that I have been a musician, performer and a composer for many years and am a member of a group called Amplify for indie musicians from all over the world to learn how to market our music. That’s where I met my two guests today, Fiona-Jane Weston and Cecelia “Cece” Otto.

Fiona-Jane is a London based actress, singer, writer and cabaret producer. She has performed to great acclaim throughout the United Kingdom and overseas, including New York. Passionate about history, particularly women’s history, her unique highly acclaimed solo shows make a specific feature of real-life historic characters using their own words.

Cece is an American based, classically trained singer, composer, international best-selling author and historian who has performed in more than 20 states and in venues all over the world. In 2013, she launched An American Songline with a cross-country musical journey along the Lincoln Highway.

Website: www.americansongline.com
YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/AmericanSongline

By popular demand, on August 21st at 8:00pm BST, Cece Otto and Fiona-Jane Weston will reprise their inaugural online concert that debuted in March.

The show is Women Across the Water: How British and American Women Won the Vote!, and naturally they’ll be including all the great songs and stories from both sides of the Atlantic.

If you didn’t catch it then, and/or would like to invite a person or two, this is your chance!

They chose that date especially, because it is very nearly the anniversary of the American Women’s Equality Day. The 26th August, 1920 was the day of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote over there, so a significant date! Cece will explain more about it in the show.

My guest this episode is Jeudi Cornejo Brealey, known as a “vintage voiced chanteuse,” who sings salvaged sweet jazz, from a time when the dance floor was the ultimate social platform, and romance was just a Fox Trot, Charleston, or Lindy Hop away.

Her voice conveys the glamour of another era, transporting audiences through song, as “she evokes the old-school thrush, who sings with the band,” refreshing timeless standards and forgotten musical gems with her sentimental and swinging interpretations.

Jeudi took a hiatus from her passion and raised two boys before feeling the calling to return to it a year ago when she launched “Love Outshines the Moon,” a bimonthly single release series featuring celestial-themed Jazz-Age era tunes, some well-known and others overlooked. Together these songs wax and wane poetic and energetic with timeless heart-felt truths. The release cycle continues through 2021.

I consider Jeudi a real Bloomer, someone who is totally open to learning and expanding her knowledge of promoting herself as a unique indie artist.

You’re invited to learn more about her at Jeudi.biz.

Self-care involves so many things, but the object is to enable quality of life.

When I was a new teacher, we frequently had insurance salesman offer a variety of products, one of which was long term insurance. You don’t think about it when you’re 25.

Many years later, my family was faced with caring for my mom, and fortunately my dad was quite capable of making those decisions. Now, I am the senior and quite aware that I may be totally on my own one day, in need of some care but still hopeful to lead a quality life of choice.

That is the topic of my podcast today, and it is not just for seniors but for anyone who anticipates being the caregiver or possibly needing care themselves.

Allee Hu was a former corporate accountant who turned entrepreneur in 2015. After experiencing life-changing events due to illness in her family, she realized that she was lacking knowledge of traditional financial planning tools and was introduced to World Financial Group. There she learned how to help her family get on the right track.

She became passionate to help others clear up the confusion and negativity from the lack of understanding about how money works and how financial products and industry work. Through her work, she devoted herself to bringing the same opportunity to other people.

Allee says “One of the best feelings to have in life is living a life of purpose, I become better through helping people to live a life by design versus life by default.”

Have you ever spent hours looking for something, wading through papers, drawers, closets that you meant to organize but then…..life got in the way.

My guest this week, Conny Graf, knows all about. Through her program “From Chaos to Peace”, she has become an expert in the field of de-cluttering and says,

“The more objects in the visual field, the harder our brain has to work to filter them out. Everything in your outer environment is a reflection of something that's inside of you”.

In our podcast, Conny defines four categories of clutter. I definitely have things that fit all the descriptions. She also has some unique views regarding health and reducing clutter in the body.

Many people in our community have expressed the need to declutter. The fact is, it often gets in the way of our Bloom because we keep waiting to get organized to begin, and somehow it never happens.

Her motto is “Successful decluttering: a few minutes a day keeps the clutter away.

There are many components to self-care and to the overall field of fitness. No matter what stage of life you are in, learning more about it will help you form your own individual, inclusive plan that will benefit you in many ways.

I’ve always had an interest in learning more about real estate investment but was under the misconception that I would need a lot of money to be successful.

Why am I including this info for my audience? Self-care involves several things. Financial stability is surely one of them. Many listeners may have experienced loss during this past year, and may be looking for ways to create income and investment.

My guest, Richelle Delia,  dispels several limiting myths that I have held for a long time, and maybe you too.  She says “It starts with a dream”  or, as I say, a dream seed. This podcast is not a typical pitch for business. Richelle is real, offers some valuable tips , insight and advice and speaks to our audience.

I’m always fascinated by people who choose to be of service to others. Reading Viktor Frankl’s book, “Man’s Search for Meaning”, I wrote down this quote because it deeply touched me:

“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Izumi Hara is one of those people who responded to the calling. She is currently retired from serving as Senior Vice President, at General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Warner Chilcott PLC, now a division of Allergan.

Izumi has been involved with the American Red Cross since 2008 when she volunteered for the gala committee. She joined the board of the Montclair, Glen Ridge, Nutley chapter shortly after that and has been on the Board of the Northern NJ Chapter since it was formed by merger in 2011. When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, Izumi volunteered and ran the call center in North Jersey for two weeks and deployed on a roving Red Cross truck to distribute snacks, MREs and clean up supplies in South Fords, which was devastated by flooding in the storm surge.

Currently, she serves on the Boards of the American Red Cross, Northern NJ Chapter, Chautauqua Institution and the YMCA of Montclair where she is the Board Chair. An avid choral singer, Izumi sings when she can with the Oratorio Society of New Jersey and the Yale Alumni Chorus and rings in the bell choir at Union Cong.

Izumi will talk about how the Red Cross started in Europe, the complexity and trustworthiness of their operations, and what we can do to support, no matter how little we may be able to offer.

A little bit from a lot of people can have a powerful impact.

Contact me if you wish to speak further to Izumi.

I met Pam years ago and have enjoyed watching her transition and develop new careers, different yet complimentary of each other. We can learn a lot from Pam’s focus and methodical pursuit of her interests.

Pam continues to grow and evolve and has lot of projects in the works. That’s why she exemplifies what a true Bloomer is all about - always in a process of becoming.

Although I've known Joe for over forty years, I learned some things about him that took me by surprise and made me realize that he truly  exemplified what a true Bloomer is all about - always part of the ongoing journey of evolving.

Sadly, Joe passed away recently, which makes this podcast even more poignant.
