In this episode, Mon talks about one way we can read the Bible better: by identifying design patterns. As people in the modern day reading an ancient text, it helps to plug ourselves into mindset of the original authors and their intended audience. After all, don't we make internal adjustments for when we read older books like the Iliad and Odyssey, Ibong Adarna, or Dante's Inferno? So why not do the same for the scriptures?

Because of who Jesus is and what he has done, we can be assured that we have good reason to rejoice regardless of our circumstances. However, we do acknowledge that not every circumstance is pleasant. Pain and suffering are real. So how do we deal with that? How do we embody joy during times when we have to lament? This episode is a reflection on those questions.

Arrogance and insecurity may seem like they're on opposite poles but they might not be as far from each other as we often think. The two might be different expressions, but they stem from the same root. In this episode, Mon talks about a previous Bible study session he gave, an insight one of his members shared, and how someone can be both humble and confident.

We like calling people out. But we don't like being called out, don't we? In this episode, Mon talks about the story of King David and the prophet Nathan. David has done wrong, and Nathan confronted him about it. As Christians, we must stand for what is true and just, but it matters how we do it. How might we do it then? What posture should we take? Let's talk about it!

We post a lot, don't we? We post about where we go, who we're with, what we eat, and even what we think. Through the internet and social media, we can know a lot about others and others can know a lot about us. But knowing about someone is different from knowing someone.

In this episode, Mon gives a simple reminder: Your private life matters. He frames his reflections around 3 questions that he invites us to ask: Where do you draw your values? How are your relationships? [And] are you able to pray well? These are important to ask because at the end of it, our private lives do affect our public lives. And it happens in one of two ways.

Have you ever been called privileged? Would you want to? It seems like more and more nowadays, people have been using the term "privileged" with a negative connotation. But is privilege itself a bad thing? Going further, is it a sin?

Elections Day just happened in the Philippines and social media is full of... feelings. Some are "good" and some are "bad." In this episode, Mon talks about how we might view and respond to these emotions. He reads from the Bible, particularly the Psalms, to look at some examples of people being open and vulnerable to God with their thoughts and emotions. The hope is that this helps us navigate our way through what is happening today both in our country and within the state of our hearts.

In this episodes, Mon reads and comments on an excerpt from an article published by CBCP News recently on how Philippines led in the world's most number of baptisms for 2019 and 2020. He then takes this opportunity to talk about some of the other elements of the Christian life that we ought to actively incorporate more daily alongside baptizing our children. These are evangelization (or evangelism), catechism (or teaching), and discipleship.

During the Holy Week, you might have seen a meme or two on social media mentioning how during the time of Jesus, the people chose Barabbas the thief over the Savior. This is then followed by a remark saying something along the lines of "2000 years later, we still choose the robbers." These memes are a bit old already but it might be popping up again since (1) it was Holy Week and (2) it's election season here in the Philippines. In this episode, Mon talks about Barabbas. What do we know about him? Was he really a thief? What does his story signify? Mon also points out a concern that he has with people sharing these kinds of posts. He exhorts that it is our politics that should serve our faith instead of the other way around.

In this episode, Mon shares a talk he gave at Youth Home Taft during Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. As of the time this is published, we find ourselves in the high point of Lent which is Holy Week. All the same, the message of being open to hearing God's word in our lives is one that remains.

Here, Mon talks about the three "voices" that we ought to be more attentive to today. These are the voices of reflection, rebuke, and revelation.

Healing and hurt. These two experiences might be more connected than you think. Of course, we know that we wouldn't need to heal if we weren't hurt in the past. But it is also true that the process of healing has moments where it hurts, too. In this episode, Mon expounds on this further. He talks about two kinds of hurts (unnecessary hurts and necessary hurts) and how that relates to the healing of the self, healing of relationships, and healing of society.

Face-to-face classes, face-to-face work, face-to-face outings, these are some of the things we have been preparing for as the cases are going down and the restrictions are being lifted. But one more thing that we ought to prepare for (if you're Catholic) are face-to-face Masses—which is really how it's meant to be celebrated!

In this episode, Mon share his insights on "Online Masses" and why it isn't enough for us Catholics. He reads parts from Bishop Barron's write up on Word On Fire inviting people to come back to Church. Along the way, he discusses the value of receiving the sacraments as well as the roots of the Holy Mass from Christ's Last Supper and the Jewish Passover.

Bread, forgiveness, and temptation. These are the things that Jesus brings up in the latter half of the prayer he taught us. What do we mean when we say these things? What are we asking for exactly? In this episode, Mon leads us through the final installment of this series, the last lines of the Our Father. Here he explores the relational, social, and spiritual dimensions of these petitions and what these have to do with the earlier ones we have already tackled. Following the movement we have set in the introduction, this section is focused on loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Kingdom, kingdom, kingdom... If you pay close attention to Jesus' teachings in the Bible, you'll notice that he mentions this word A LOT. Around 50+ times in Matthew, around 20 times in Mark, and around 40+ times in Luke. When he first started his ministry, this was what he proclaimed! Many of his parables begin with something along the lines of "The kingdom of God is like..." This was a big deal for Jesus. No wonder he includes it in the prayer he taught us.

In this episode, Mon zooms in on the next 3 lines of the Lord's Prayer: "May your kingdom come, may you will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." He talks about the kingdom, heaven, the final judgment, as well as the participation we have as part of that kingdom.

What is Jesus' favorite way of referring to God? Answer: He calls him Father. And he invites us to do the same! In this episode, Mon talks about the first two lines of the Lord's Prayer: "Our Father in heaven, holy be your name." How might we understand and appreciate this better? Mon also dives deeper into what we mean when we call something or someone, "holy." Here, we see the contrast and harmony of viewing God with both relationship and reverence, both intimacy and authority.

The "Our Father." Majority of Filipinos (especially those who come from Catholic schools) have heard and recited this prayer countless of times. But let's admit it, it can be so easy to let these memorized words slip off of our tongue without us really taking them to heart. In this time of Lent, Mon begins this 4-part series of reflection and study through the parts of the Lord's Prayer. This episode starts us off with an introduction and an overview, relating this prayer Jesus taught us to another one of his teachings: The Greatest Commandment.

The Pharisees are often painted as the villains in Jesus' story, but this oversimplification and lack of understanding could lead us to serious error: one of those errors being that we end up becoming like them. In this episode, Mon talks about this and how this comes out today in a specific area of our lives called politics.

We might be fighting for something that we think is good, but who are we becoming in the process? Are we really compelled by these issues or are we just prideful that we think we are right? Do we really want to convince and inform others or do we just want to show them how we are better than them? These are important questions to ask. The way of Christ is different from the way of the world; we need to understand that.

Welcome to the first episode of the year... in February. Mon is back and he's here to talk about the story of Jonah. You might know him as the guy who gets eaten by a whale (it was more of a big fish really) but there is more to his story than we often talk or hear about. This Old Testament story is actually very funny and profound—filled with exaggeration, inversions, and a depth that goes beyond the big fish. It is actually a story about how God loves his enemies.

Two kings? Weren't there three? Yes, you read that right. In this episode, we will talk about the two kings—not the three who gave the gifts to Joseph and Mary, but the two who are contrasted in the Christmas story. Let's talk about King Herod, and King Jesus.

Mon shares with us a brief background and history on Herod, and he reflects on the importance how the rule of Herod differs from the rule of Jesus. He talks about the difference between taking and receiving, and how that relates to giving. He also points out how parts of Herod's worldview still permeate our culture today. This then leads to the question: Which king do I serve today? Toward the end, he reads to us a passage from the Christmas story in Matthew and leads us into prayer.

This is Mon's last episode for 2021. He will be back on January!

How do you perceive yourself now? How could you perceive yourself better? Is self-esteem any different from confidence? Where does human dignity fit into all of this? In this episode, Mon explores the answers to these questions. The hope is that in the process, this gives us insight into how we ought to treat ourselves and one another. Along the way, he also talks about the sacredness of life, rights and justice, being made in the image of God, equality, the porn industry, and misconceptions on the Church's teaching on sex.

A common go-to response of people trying to encourage someone goes along the lines of, "you are enough," and "you just have to believe in yourself." But is that always true, though? Is it always helpful? These are some of the questions that Mon opens in a talk he gave recently which is featured in this episode. He discusses the meaning of the word, repentance. He shares with us the paradoxical invitation given in the Gospel for us to "reach the end of ourselves" and to make a gift of ourselves. Along the way, he also addresses a false understanding of self-love, and gives a short discussion of the Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell.

Onions have layers. People have layers. Join Mon as he shares about his further reflections on a question he was asked when he guested on Radio Veritas 846. The question is fairly simple, "How would you describe the youth today?" The reason why Mon elaborates is because it seems like there is more to that area than we typically draw our attention to. He discusses the layers we put up around us to protect ourselves, and about how part of loving and being loved is learning how to become vulnerable, to allow ourselves to be seen. Along the way, he also talks about dump accounts, social media, generational gaps, and Adam and Eve.

Have you ever tried to read the Bible? Did you ever finish? This text has influenced Christians and non-Christians all over the world, over the centuries. This tells the story of God and his people. A lot of people agree that this is important, however not as many really get to read it. In this episode, Mon shares 3 things to consider to help us read the Bible better. What are those 3 things? It is helpful to know the literary genre (narrative, poetry, and discourse), the culture and history, and the bigger story of this ancient book. Along the way, he talks about the stories of the Roman Centurion, Judges and the need for a king, and Moses declaration of the prophet who is to come. The goal of this discussion is not just to know more about the Bible, but to know more the one to whom it points, Jesus Christ.

Why do I have to tell God something he already knows? The thing about prayer is that it can be so easy to misunderstand and difficult to actually do on a regular basis. Even the Bible likens prayer to a battle or a wrestling match. In this episode, Mon shares some of his insights and learnings on the subject. Why do we pray? What is prayer? And does God need it? He discusses how prayer is God's invitation to relationship and to partnership. Prayer does change things. It's one way of how God involves us in what he does.

Politics! It's not always easy (or fun) to talk about but if it matters to people, then it is worth discussing. This is something that might have been part of your conversations and encounters with people lately whether online on social media or in person with friends and family. With the upcoming 2022 elections, things are getting even more heated up.

Join Mon as he shares some of his insights on viewing politics as a whole here in our current context. He shares about two temptations that we can fall into: indifference and idolatry. He frames this discussion through the scripture story of when Jesus was asked about the Pharisees about paying taxes to Caesar. He further expounds on the implications of us being made in the image of God, how our faith ought to shape our perspective, and how our allegiance might need to be reevalutated.

Acts 2 tells the story of the Holy Spirit's descent during Pentecost. The apostles were waiting in expectation after Jesus had just resurrected from the tomb and ascended to heaven. They had been told by him that when the Holy Spirit comes, they will become witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

During the celebration, when crowds of Jews were present in Jerusalem, the Spirit came upon the apostles as tongues of fire, and they started proclaiming! Peter takes the lead and preaches the good news to the people present who were listening. He tells them about Jesus, his life, death, and resurrection. That very day, 3000 of them received this word in their hearts and were baptized. And from there we get a glimpse of the early church helping one another in unity under the Name of Jesus.

This episode is a reading and reflection of that chapter in scripture.

One of the things you might observe in the Gospels is that in early parts of Jesus' ministry, he would admonish the people he healed and those who followed him to not tell others about who he is. This seems counterintuitive for someone who's starting a movement, right? But all this is intentional. It was a strategic move to both get the foreign Roman rulers off his scent (who could have meddled in their affairs in fear of a perceived insurrection), and to lead the people of Israel, the Jews, to reexamine their expectations for what the coming Messiah should be and do.

They were expecting a political militaristic ruler who would lead the revolution to fight off their enemies and to restore their nation. They expected someone like Moses, or Joshua, or David, or Judas Maccabeus (also known as Judah the Maccabee). Little did they know that Jesus wanted to do more than just save the Jews from the Romans; he wanted to save the world from sin.

In the same way, our society today has some false perceptions and expectations of who Jesus is and what he ought to do. Influenced by worldly culture and bad teaching, we can be led to a view of Jesus that no longer aligns with who he reveals himself to be. If we want to follow him and share his gospel to the people around us, then we need to reevaluate and reflect whether we are following the real Jesus or a lesser imitation of him.

Mon picks up from last week and continues the conversation on forgiveness. He reads the passage of the parable of the unforgiving servant told by Jesus to Peter when he asked him a question about how many times he should forgive.

One of the reasons why forgiveness can be difficult to either extend or ask for is because we tend to have a false understanding of what it is. There is a difference between experiencing anger and holding grudges. Here, Mon shares three (3) points of reflection to help define what forgiveness is and what it is not:

  1. It's not a feeling; it's a decision.
  2. It's not a license; it's a step toward freedom.
  3. It's not reconciliation (although it can lead to that); it is an act of faith.

On this episode, Mon shares a recent talk he gave at Youth Home Taft. He takes on certain themes such as forgiveness and accountability, God's justice and mercy, and how he calls us back to transform us along the way.

These are helpful things to reflect on here in our culture where we choose to cancel people in public more than we correct or counsel them in private. We set such high standards for others but such low ones for ourselves. We notice the splinter in our brother's eye, yet do not perceive the wooden beam in our own.

Here Mon reads and reflects on the story of the adulterous woman brought to Jesus by the Jewish crowds. We'll look at his words and his actions in response to this—how he addresses the woman's sin for what it is while simultaneously calls out the ulterior motives and hypocrisy of the crowds who brought her to him. This then paves the way for her to receive the genuine love and mercy that he offers.

On this episode Mon shares his reflections on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He takes this time to discuss what it is and why it's important, as well as to branch into other related teachings of the Catholic Church such as the Immaculate Conception (not to be confused with the Virgin Birth), the Resurrection of the Body, Heaven and Earth, and the Incarnation. He points out the cohesiveness of Catholic teaching, even referencing the Theology of the Body. We are body and soul—not just body and not just soul. These teachings may seem too lofty and academic, but these have real consequences in our lives because it shapes how we view the world and live in it.

Today we'll tackle a small story from the New Testament within the bigger story of the Bible. This is Paul's letter to a guy named Philemon about his servant who ran away. Here, Mon talks about the slave-turned-brother Onesimus (yes, like the clothing brand), and about how social change begins with the transformation of the individual.

On this episode, Mon talks about the problem of evil. It can be a challenging topic for several reasons, some of which are obvious, but it is important nonetheless for us to tackle and address it. How can an all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful allow evil to take place?

On this episode, Mon, Mike and Bene talk about "praise and worship." Why do we gather in large rooms or halls with friends and strangers to sing together? It's not hard to see why an outsider might find that weird. Why do we do that? Why do we write songs like these? What's the point of singing it together?
