Chris & Nancy are back with a round-up of news which includes the Solheim Cup, which, once again favored Europe, the Berlin Marathon where Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa smashed women's marathon world record, a review of the Tennis Grand Slams which featured new and different champions: Aryna Sabalenka (Belarusia) Australian Open, Iga Swiatek(POL) French Open, Markéta Vondroušová (Czech) Wimbledon and Coco Gauff (USA) US Open, and Rugby England 50-24 win over Canada and a TV rights issue which meant it was not shown on network television, the World Athletics Championship which is an indication of what to expect next year at the Paris Olympic Games. Plus a review of the top stories in football which includes the USWNT winning both of its Friendlies against South Africa, the retirement of Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe, and the potential candidates to fill the coaching vacancy, which includes the names of Laura Harvery, Emma Hays, Sarina Wiegman, Bev Priestman and Tony Gustavsson; the Lionesses 2-1 win over Scotland in the first of their UEFA Women’s National League games. And finally our thoughts on the events surrounding the Spanish team which have somewhat overshadowed their magnificent World Cup victory.

Chris & Nancy are back with a recap of the FIFA Women’s World Cup—a round up of the highs and lows of a tournament that broke records for number of nations competing and global audience. It was a festival of football, a feast for footie fans and a boost for women’s sport around the world. There were plenty of surprises with some of the giants of the sport among them favorites to lift the trophy who fell by the wayside in the group stages. Ultimately our predictions did not hold up and a new champion was crowned in Stadium Australia when Spain deservedly lifted the trophy after conquering England 1-0 in the final. Nancy was there to watch it all unfold and Chris endured some very early morning starts to watch the games from the US. So what were their takeaways and tournament favorites. Take a listen and relive some of the highlights of the tournament.

After four years of weekly shows it’s time to close the curtain and retire the WiSP News Desk, the show that has brought you the top stories from around the world fo women’s sports. And it’s been a fun ride watching different sports grow and champions made. On this final episode we begin with a true champion of her sport counting 19 times as the LPGA Champion, New Zealander, Lydia Ko wins the final title of the season and $2 million check at the CME Tour Championship. In Alpine Skiing, the World Cup got underway in Levi, Finland and American Mikaela Shiffrin came out the gate as she means to continue with back to back wins in the two slalom races ahead of Anna Svenn Larsson (SWE) and Petra Vlhova (SVK) on day one and beating Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener and Petra again on the second day. The Lionesses were held to a 1-1 draw against Norway in the last of their friendly games of the year. And in the WSL, Manchester United ended Arsenal’s winning streak by beating them 3-2, thanks to a last minute goal by Alessia Russo. The Rugby League World Cup came to a conclusion with an exciting win again for Australia against New Zealand. Exciting news in motor racing as Formula One launches a women's academy. British Darts star Fallon Sherrock gets a place in the 2023 World Championships. And in Nordic Combined Skiing women protest in a very visual way at being denied Olympic entry when they already have a World Cup season and World Championship.

This week’s news stories begin with the Rugby World Cup Final which saw the New Zealand Black Ferns beat England’s Red Roses 34-31 in a nail-biting battle between rugby’s giants. Meanwhile the Rugby League World Cup Semi-Finals are taking place this week between Australia v Papua New Guinea and England v New Zealand. The Final will be held at Old Trafford in Manchester on November 19. In cycling Hannah Roberts wins her fourth world title in the 2022 BMX World Championships. In football, the USWNT rounded off the year with a win and loss against Germany in their two friendly games going 1-2 down and 2-1 up. In Spain, the European Champions England beat Japan 4-0 and face Norway on November 15 for their last friendly game of the year. England footballer Toni Duggan discusses challenges of being a pregnant footballer, which is becoming more common now in the professional game. We hear how British Athletics will be hosting a busy winter schedule of meets in Birmingham. And in tennis Switzerland broke their runner-up streak by winning the Billie Jean King Cup. And finally the Skiing World Cup season promises to get underway this week in Levi, Finland with a slalom race.

We begin this week’s news with a round up of the World Gymnastics Championships, which were held in Liverpool where national star Jessica Gadirova’s gold crowns Britain's best-ever World Championships. Kenyan Sharon Lokedi triumphed in the New York Marathon with a winning time of 2:23:23. Nancy has a round-up of the WSL matches this past weekend and has news of a new national team competition system. The Lionesses roster for friendlies against Japan on November 11 and Norway on November 15 has been named, and there are some late changes to the squad. And the USWNT has also announced its squad to face Germany in two friendlies; Nov 10 & 13. We discuss the WTA Finals, which take place today in Fort Worth, TX between Aryna Sabalenka and Caroline Garcia after somewhat surprising semi-finals results. The Rugby World Cup reaches its climax next weekend when the favorites England face off against the hosts New Zealand. Nancy tells us about a new route for the Tour de France Femmes next year, and Chris has an update of the start to the Skiing World Cup season, which is suffering from lack of snow.

We kick off this week’s news round-up with the NWSL Championship Final, which took place at the weekend in Washington, DC. The Portland Thorns beat Kansas City Current 2-0 thanks to Sophia Smith scoring in the 4th minute and it would be an own goal by the Current’s goalie Addisyn Merrick in the 56th minute that clinched the title again for the Thorns. To wrap up the season the NWSL Coach of the Year is San Diego’s Casey Stoney, Rookie of the Year is Naomi Girma, defender for San Diego, and
the MVP of the Year is Portland Thorns 22 year old forward Sophia Smith. Smith is also on the roster for the USWNT, which has just been announced for the two friendly matches against Germany this month, which sees the return of Alex Morgan, Malory Pugh and Adrianna Franch. Meanwhile in Europe, tickets have just gone on sale for the first-ever edition of the UEFA-CONMEBOL Women’s Finalissima, which will be played between the winners of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, England, and the 2022 CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina champions, Brazil on Thursday 6 April 2023 at Wembley Stadium. Nancy has a round-up of the WSL games this past weekend and that Manchester City will be changing their kit to include white shorts. In boxing Ireland’s Katie Taylor beat Argentinian Karen Elizabeth Carabajal to remain undisputed lightweight world champion. The WTA Finals get underway today in Fort Worth, Texas with the top eight players in the world. And we take a look at the top 15 highest paid female athletes across five sports.

U.S. boxing champ Claressa Shields, 27, from Flint, Michigan defeated British fighter Savannah Marshall, 31, by an unanimous decision in front of a capacity crowd at the O2 stadium in London on October 15 to become the undisputed world middleweight title holder. And the viewing audience showed up to break more records for women’s sport. Breaking news today was that a Russian court upheld Brittney Griner’s sentence on drug smuggling charges, clearing the way for her to serve nine years in a penal colony, unless the U.S. government can negotiate a deal for her release. Tragic news for the Brittney and her family which has rocked the sport’s world. In tennis, number 10 ranked player Romania's Simona Halep tested positive for a drug violation and is preparing her appeal. Meanwhile world number 1 Poland’s Iga Swiatek wins her eighth title of the year at the San Diego Open, American teenager has reached a career high ranking of No 4 and compatriot Jessica Pegula wins her first WTA 1000 title beating some strong opposition and rise to No 3 in the world. In football, a crowd of 22,035 was on hand at Providence Park in Portland — the second largest attendance count in NWSL playoff history — and behind only last week’s record of 26,215 set by San Diego as Portland Thorns advanced to the final of the NWSL Championship beating San Diego 2. They will meet Kansas City Current, who took down the No 1 seed OL Reign 2-0, at the Audi Field in Washington, DC on October 29. With Casey Stoney (San Diego) and Rhian Wilkinson (Portland) leading their respective teams, Sunday’s semifinal marked the first time in NWSL history that two female head coaches went head-to-head in a playoff game. The Football World Cup draw has been announced and we share our thoughts on some of the eight pool teams. We have an update from the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand where the hosts our shower their fire power. While in England the Rugby League World Cup is advancing to its knockout round. Disappointing news for skiing fans as the unseasonal mild weather stalls the start of the season with the traditional opener at Solden in Austria cancelled followed by the new double-header of downhill races at Zermatt - Cervinia falling victim to a lack of snow. And finally, we report on the Russian Doping Agency RUSADA secrecy around the Kamila Valieva case which is coming under fire from skaters.

Our top story this week is how Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich achieved the second fastest time in women’s marathon history Chicago Marathon - 2 hrs 14 mins 18 seconds. The tournament runs from October 8 - November 22. Very sad news about the W Series motor racing season which has ended abruptly due to lack of funding. In cycling, Ferrand-Prevot becomes Ineos first female rider. Skiing fans are anticipating the Skiing World Cup season which starts October 22 in Solden with Giant Slalom. And finally, WNBA star Brittney Griner will return to court on October 25 for an appeal hearing. Her wife Cherelle said that once the hearing is held and the order is finalized, Brittney could be moved to a labor camp. She added that president Biden is doing all he can but there’s another party in this situation. They are also dealing with the need for Russia to have mercy on Brittney.

The USA won its fourth straight gold at FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup with a new look team, as veterans retire, with victory against China in Sydney. On the eve of the Rugby World Cup the English Rugby Football Union defends its decision to fly women's team to New Zealand in economy. In motor racing, Britain’s defending W-Series Champion, Jamie Chadwick, targets F1 in five years. In football, we have a round-up of the NWSL play-off stages and the second game of the WSL season which saw Arsenal overpower Tottenham 4-0 largely thanks for the power couple that is Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema. And there is controversy in Spain where the players have boycotted the national football team.

British Eventing’s rising star 25 year old Yasmin Ingham and her talented 11 year old French gelding Banzei du Loir swept aside a field of the sport’s superstars and veterans to become the newly crowned world champion this weekend at Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy. Silver went to the reigning Olympic Champions from Germany Julia Krajewski riding the 12 year old French mare Amande de B’Néville. Julia also added team gold to her medal collection with USA at last getting back onto the podium earning the silver medal. The last time the US won a medal of any color was 2002 at the World Equestrian Games in Spain. Notably all three teams on the podium in Italy comprised two women and two men showing how equal equestrian sport is.
Elsewhere the NSL season got underway in England and Nancy has a round up including a notable upset already. In the US the NWSL broke record crowds in San Diego topping 32,000, and 17 year old Jaedyn Shaw scored her third consecutive game for the WAVE. The WNBA season wrapped up with victory for Becky Hammon’s Las Vegas Aces. In tennis Czech player 17 year old Linda Fruhvitova becomes youngest tennis player in top 100. And with the Rugby World Cup a few weeks away England announces its squad that will head Down Under.

Poland’s Iga Swiatek knows how to play a Grand Slam…. save your best till last. And that’s exactly what she did in the US Open when she beat the World No 5 Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6. The pair are now 1 and 2 in the world rankings, which sums up their year. Britain’s Piggy March who won Badminton Horse Trials in 2019 added the Burghley title to her resume again with Vanir Kamira. This week the Eventing World Championships takes place in Pratoni del Vivaro near Rome where Britain will start as one of the favorites. In football, in the second of two friendly matches, the USWNT beat Nigeria 2-1 thanks to Rose Lavell’s goal in the 66’ following an own goal in the 24’ minute. Uchenna Kanu scored for Nigeria in the 50th minute with a superb goal having worked round the US defense. Meanwhile England trounced Luxembourg 10-0 in the second of their World Cup qualifying matches. Nancy also has news of Spanish referees striking. In motor racing, Japan’s Miki Koyama @mkhouse001 wins the Formula Regional Japan title. With three races to go, she becomes the first-ever woman to win a mixed FIA single-seater championship. In the W Series three drivers have been named in a F3 test drive in France. The Rugby 7s World Cup Championship in South Africa saw the dominant Australian team take the crown again in a thrilling gold medal game against their arch rivals New Zealand and France denied the USA the bronze medal. And with the death of Queen Elizabeth II sporting events which will now take place on October 15.

The second game will take place at the Audi Field in Washington, DC also on Sept 6.
In cricket The Oval Invincibles won The Hundred Trophy and set another record attendance of 20,840 at the Lords Cricket Ground. The total competition attendance was in excess of 270,000. We review the first week of the US Open Tennis and make our predictions for this year’s champion. Also this weekend, American Clarrisa Shields will face Britain’s Savannah Marshall for the Middleweight Boxing title as part of an all-female under-card at the O2 Arena in London. In rugby, while the World Cup prepares to kick-off on October 8 in New Zealand, the Rugby Football Union faces legal action in the UK against its ban on transgender players.

The sports spotlight is now focused on the US Open as the First Round gets underway today and we take a look at the prospects and who has caught our attention. And we have the highest paid tennis players which features four women in the top ten but the highest earning woman may surprise you. In football, Barcelona’s Alex Putellas wins UEFA Player of the Year trophy which must be some consolation after a torn ACL prevented her from playing in the Euros. As the Lionesses name their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Ellen White reveals that a punctured lung injury prompted her retirement. The USWNT prepares this week for two friendly games and have named Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo to replace Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman who has a family commitment. In motor sport, F1 male driver Sebastian Vettel says he can't see why a woman can't start on F1 grid in contrast to Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali who said it was "very unlikely" that it will happen before 2027. And why women fear for their families in Afghanistan who will be killed for supporting women's sport.

Nancy is back from vacation and straight into the news this week as the USWNT and the new European Champions, England. name their roster for September matches; the US has friendlies while the Lionesses have World Cup qualifiers. And we compare ticket prices to the games: at the Audi Field, Washington, DC - USWNT friendly v Nigeria $150 / 126.88 pound sterling. By contrast the Lionesses play at Stoke City and their WC Qualifier v Luxembourg ticket costs 15 pound sterling / $17.73. Naturally we have something to say about that. Meanwhile Barcelona announced they will play championship league games at Camp Nou. On Monday, August 29 the U.S. Open Tennis gets underway at Flushing Meadow, New York through to September 11 and we take a look at the main contenders. And a topic that will likely be discussed more at the Grand Slam is the difference between men’s and women’s balls. Yes, it’s a thing! And over in motor racing the Formula 1 chief says female drivers is unlikely in five years. Did you know that F2 and 3 do not have power steering but Formula 1 does? And while Nancy was away from her desk the European Athletic Championships were held in Munich. Yes, that’s three major meets this summer in quick succession; World Champs, Commonwealth Games and European Champs. Maybe time for athletes to take a vacation.

The World Championships in dressage, jumping, vaulting and para-dressage took place in Herning Denmark August 6-14, 2022. There were 950 riders and vaulters, and 1200 horses from 50 nations. Women took over the podium in the individual dressage when Britain’s Charlotte Fry was crowned World Champion with Denmark’s Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour in silver and Dinja van Liere from The Netherlands in bronze. As England’s football fans recovered from their win in the Euros at Wembley last week, the Commonwealth Games took center stage in Birmingham with a thrilling week of competition. Of the 26 sports involved it was field hockey and cricket that captured the crowds. attention on the final weekend. England’s 2-1 win over favorites Australia saw a home win 2-1. And on the Edgbaston field Australia’s cricketers made up for the Hockeyroos defeat when they took the gold by beating India in the T20 final. In Badminton, one of India’s greatest sportswomen beat Canadian Michelle Li to add her first Commonwealth gold medal to her world championship title in 2019 and two Olympic medals. Elsewhere, Ultra-runner Kate Jayden set a marathon record with a broken knee. In rugby DMP Sharks may have to withdraw from Premier 15s due to under-funding. And the World Championships in dressage, para-dressage, vaulting and show jumping are underway in Herning, Denmark with the home team beating out favorites Great Britain and Germany to take the team dressage gold medal.

Women’s sport is celebrating not just in the UK but around the world as football fans watched England defeat Germany 2-1 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium to capture the European Championship this past weekend. The scenes at the North London venue were unprecedented in women’s football with a crowd of 87,192 creating an atmosphere like no other. The chants of ‘football’s coming home’ echoed far and wide as Sarina Weigman’s team did what so few teams have historically been able to in this tournament—they beat eight-time champions Germany. That the game went to extra-time only underscored the Lionesses resilient form that they showed all tournament and served to reinforce the remarkable leadership that is Sarina Weigman. She has empowered her team like no other manager in England’s history and led the team to a European victory, just as she did with her native Dutch team in 2017. The tournament attendance topped 574,875 (In The Netherlands in 2017 it was 240,055) and the UK TV audience reached 17.4 million ( the 2019 Women’s World Cup was 11.7 million). Chris and Nancy share their thoughts on the final and what it will take to keep the momentum going for girls and women in football and beyond. In other news, The Netherlands Annemiek van Vleuten won the inaugural Tour de France Femme. Her compatriot; the legend that is Marianne Vos won three of the stages, plus a second and third finish. Meanwhile in Hungary in motorsports W Series, Alice Powell fended off reigning champion Jamie Chadwick to give Britain a total of five finishers in the top ten. In Birmingham, England last week the Commonwealth Games began and Nancy has news of a cycling controversy. In MMA Brazilian Amanda Nunes regained her Bantamweight title defeating American Julianna Pena in a bloody fight. And as we indicated last week, the UK Rugby Football Union Council voted in favor of updating its gender policy starting with 22/23 season, which excludes transgender men from competing on women’s teams.

We kick off this week with football since the CONCACAF Championship concluded on July 18 and the Euros are down to the quarter final stages. First, the USWNT beat Canada 1-0 to claim the CONCACAF Trophy and Qualify for the Paris Olympic Games.
The U.S. Women’s National Team downed Canada 1-0 to win the Concacaf W Championship and earn a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. A penalty kick goal from forward Alex Morgan that beat her San Diego teammate and Canada goalie Kailen Sheridan in the 78th minute sealed the game for the United States in front of 17,247 fans. For her performance throughout the tournament which included three goals, Morgan was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player in the competition.

Elena Rybakina, aged 23, and currently ranked 23, delivered when it mattered most at the final of a Grand Slam and quietly defeated the World No 5 and tour favorite Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in three sets—3-6 6-2 6-2. Prior to making the Wimbledon final, the 6’ 0” Russian born athlete was a quarter finalist at Roland Garros in 2021. This year’s path to the final saw her drop just one set but when she beat Simone Halep in the semi’s she made it known that she was a worthy finalist. U.S. Defeats Canada to become the first host country to win he World Lacrosse Championship with a 11-8 victory in the gold medal match at Unitas Stadium, Towson, MD on July 9th. Since its first foreign tour in 1935, the U.S. women’s national team has been chasing the dual purpose of winning on the field and helping to grow this great game. The chase has culminated in the U.S. winning eight of the 10 championships. Chris reports on the USWNT making it through to the semi-final of the CONCACAF Championship against Costa Rica on July 14th following their 1-0 of the host nation Mexico thanks to a goal by Kristie Mewis in the 89th minute. Across the pond the UK are hosting the 2022 UEFA Euros and Nancy has a round up of the first week’s group games. And finally an update on the Brittany Griner case as US President Joe Biden writes to her to say that release efforts are being made.

We begin this week with motor racing news since Jamie Chadwick continued her winning form in the W Series when she took the checkered flag at Silverstone to increase her lead in the table to 50 points. Nancy has a round up from the Wimbledon Tennis. Championships including news of protesters drawing attention to the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai who has not played internationally since she revealed she had been sexually assaulted. Chris reviews the CONCACAF Championship which kicked off with the USWNT convincing 3-0 win against Haiti to celebrate July 4th in Monterrey, Mexico. Alex Morgan continued her tremendous form with two superb goals in the 16th minute delivered by Mal Pugh and 23rd minutes, by Kelly O’Hara. Then in the closing stages Midge Purce sealed the win in the 84th minute, thanks to a Kristie Mewis’ handy delivery into the box. Alex has really found her rhythm this season in the NWSL and then like a true veteran brought it to the national squad in time for the World Cup and Olympic Games qualifiers. She always looks so polished but there a new shine on her brilliance as one of the best forwards in the game. Nancy previews the Euro 2022 preview including the devastating news that Spain’s leading player Alexia Putellas tearing her ACL the day before the start of the championships. There is also news of Barbra Banda being excluded from Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a maajor billing in boxing when Claressa Shields meets Savannah Marshall. Elsewhere, WNBA star Brittney Griner has sent a letter to the White House, appealing directly to President Biden to secure her release from Russia. And finally, congratulations to sailors Sally Barkow and Francesca Clapcich who have announced that Sally gave birth to daughter Harriet Emilia Clapcich Barkow.

In Commerce City, CO last week, Portland Thorns FC forward Sophie Smith made it two goals in a row, six minutes apart, assisted by Rose Lavelle, in the first of the two friendly games against Colombia. These were followed by San Diego Wave FC midfielder Taylor Kornieck scoring in her debut game with the perfect header off Megan Rapinoe’s serve. It was a tepid first half for the US even against a weak opposition but clearly words were spoken in the locker room for the US to come out with renewed focus and precision in their attacking line. The second game in Utah saw a veteran starting line-up and it was seasoned Washington Spirit defender Kelley O’Hara who slammed one in the back of the net in the 77th minute to add to an own goal in. the first half, which gave the US a 2-0 win. Shout out to North Carolina Courage defender Carson Pickett who is the first ever player with a limb difference to earn a USWNT cap. The 28 year old from South Carolina was born without a left forearm and hand. The squad now head to the 2022 CONCACAF Championship in Mexico for the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifying games, which begin on July 4 against Haiti followed by Jamaica on the 7th and Mexico on the 11th. Swimming’s international federation, FINA, made history this week as it sought to clarify the confusion and controversy in the transgender debate. It announced that people who have been through male puberty would no longer be allowed to compete against women. And it would also create a new category for those who had. Rugby has also banned transgender males from competing with cis-gender women, and cycling is currently reviewing its rules. In football NWSL club OL Reign signs forward Jordyn Huitem and we have a good read on how women’s football revolutionized the sport including an important perspective on the history of the game. The WNBA star Sue Legend announced her retirement. Last week, an independent review concluded that British Gymnastics allowed for a culture of physical and emotional abuse and failed to provide a safe environment for gymnasts, with children body-shamed, belittled and abused. In winter sports Women’s Combined Nordic continues its bid to become an Olympic sport. And with the Wimbledon Tennis Championships starting next week, female players continue to deal with periods while playing but only in SW19 are they forced to wear white.

Football makes headlines this week, even before the international season kicks off, and it’s the USWNT legends Tobin Heath and Christen Press who share the limelight for very different reasons. Tobin, 34, who was recently released from Arsenal following injuries has reportedly been acquired by the NWSL West Coast team, OL Reign. Meanwhile, nearly 1000 miles south in LA, her friend and former USWNT teammate Christen Press has been sidelined for the rest of the season with an ACL tear of her right knee. Christen, 33, had scored earlier in the game and also had an assist to her credit against Racing Louisville before being struck down in the second half. Elsewhere the USWNT roster for two Friendlies this month and the CONCACAF tournament next month have been named. The Miami Open is mid way through its quarter finals with Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek emerging as possible finals just as Iga is set to be come the World No 1 following the retirement of Ash Barty and at the Australian’s request to be removed from the rankings. Meanwhile former world No. 1 women's tennis player Victoria Azarenka drops out of Miami Open dropped out of the tournament in the second set of losing to the teenager Linda Fruhvirtová who is half her age stating that: 'I shouldn't have gone on the court today’. While Victoria is another athlete to step aside for her mental health, the timing of such an exit will no doubt be discussed for some time to come. Meanwhile England made it to the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup in New Zealand when they beat Bangladesh. They next play South Africa on March 31. The winner of that game will face Australia who are unbeaten in the tournament and will be tough to beat. In Europe, the Six Nations Rugby kicked off last weekend with an emphatic win by the Red Roses over Scotland. In the US the NCAA Final Four will be played out this weekend in Minneapolis. And at the women’s NCAA swimming and diving champs last week, the young 2020 Olympians dominated. Most notably Alex Walsh (silver medalist in Tokyo Olympics) who won three individual titles as a UVA sophomore (more than her older sister Gretchen).

The big breaking news this week is that three-time grand slam champion and WTA World No 1 Ash Barty surprised the sports world with the announcement of her retirement at the age of 25 with $23.8 earnings. Ash won the Australian Open this year and looked hot favorite to continue that form but there’s nothing like retiring while you’re at the top of your game so good luck Ash… there are many more dreams to pursue. Last weekend wrapped up the World Cup ski season where Mikaela Shiffrin put Olympic Games behind her to win the Overall Crystal Globe after winning the Downhill and finishing second in the Super G at the finals in Courcheval/Meribel. In horse racing Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup last Thursday after winning the Champion Hurdle two days before. Rachael made history last year winning the prestigious Grand National race so all eyes will be on her making it a double next month. The Rugby Six Nations tournament will see unprecedented coverage when that kicks off this weekend, Poland’s Iga Swiatek won Indian Wells tournament last week and really stamped her credentials as she rises to the top of the rankings. And there is an exciting line-up for the start of the W Motor Racing Series with new drivers from a variety of countries.

Ukrainian Paralympian Oksana Masters completed her quest for medals at the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games finishing with seven to add to her total tally and record of fifteen. Oksana’s story from being a victim of Chernobyl to Paralympic Champion is heartwarming but nonetheless a difficult time for her to compete and win medals. We also continue the story of WNBA star Brittney Griner who is being detained in Russia on drugs charges. Chris has the latest from the Sskiing World Cup Finals this week where American Mikaela Shiffrin won the Downhill and Italy’s Sofia Goggia claimed the Downhill Crystal Globe. Nancy updates us on the Cricket World Cup, jockey Rachael Blackmore’s winning streak at the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival, an Increase in FA Cup prize money, Sue Redfern becoming the first woman to umpire a first class cricket match in England. After we taped the podcast Nancy attended the women’s rugby documentary No Woman No Try which will premiere on Amazon Prime on March 26.

With the war in Ukraine affecting athletes in training we hear of a Ukranian Canoeist and her desperate journey to rescue her daughter from the war zone. One of Ukraine’s star athletes is Oksana Masters who is currently taking part in the Beijing Paralympics having won gold medal already but shares how this is bitter sweet because she feels guilty in light of what’s happening. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is dominating the sports news this week with the IOC making statements to boycott Russian involvement in sport and International Federations imposing sanctions. The Beijing Paralympic Winter Games begins March 4 through 13th with 78 events taking place across six sports. There will be Primetime coverage in the US on NBC.
We also have an equal prize money story from cycling, a preview of the Cricket World Cup which begins this week in New Zealand. On this week’s show we review the top stories from the Beijing Olympic Games beginning with skiing. Lara Gut Behrami added Super G Olympic Champion to her Giant Slalom Bronze Medal in Beijing and the World Champion titles she won in Super G and Giant Slalom in Cortina last year. Austria’s Mirjam Puchner divided the Swiss charge by beating Michelle Gisen into the silver medal position. Switzerland made it two in a row when reigning World Downhill Champion Corinne Suter, who was also the World Super G silver medallist behind Lara in 2021, defeated the reigning Olympic Champion Italy’s Sofia Goggia by 16 hundredths of a second to take the downhill crown. Sofia’s return following a nasty fall in Cortina just over three weeks ago was a remarkable effort and she clearly thought it would be enough to retain her title. Sofia and Corinne are currently one-two in the World Cup Downhill rankings. Italy’s Nadia Delgado achieved her first ever podium result with the bronze medal. So we now have two Swiss skiers concurrently holding Olympic and World titles in Downhill and Super G. So far the Swiss have 5 medals in alpine skiing going into the Combined (17th) and Mixed Parallel (19th) events.
The women’s monobob made its highly anticipated debut with US teammates and rivals Kaillie Humphries and Elana Meyers Taylor the clear medal favorites. In the end it was Kaillie, the newly minted American, who clinched the crown. Kaillie won gold at the two-woman events at the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games. Elana is now the U.S. bobsledder with the most Olympic medals with this silver medal finish. Both women have medaled in every Olympic event they’ve competed in, sharing the podium in the last four Olympic Winter Games. Canada’s Christine de Bruin claimed the bronze to make it a North American sweep. But Germany will prove the biggest challenge in the two-man bobsleigh that takes place on the 18/19th having dominated this World Cup season.
We also have an update on the 15 year old Russian skater Kamila Valieva who tested positive to a doping violation in December and was later cleared to compete in Beijing. Snowboarder Chloe Kim makes history at the Games. Plus another record is matched in tennis by Estonian Anett Kontaveit, Emma Gilmour becomes McClaren’s first female driver, and the Women’s Sports Foundation has a new executive director in Danette Leighton.

On this week’s episode, Chris & Nancy take a look at the first week of competition from the Beijing Olympic Games. Skating got underway and the skateboarding with some firsts for women. The Giant Slalom saw some major spills and thrills with the flying Swede Sara Hector underlining her tremendous form this season when she became the Olympic Champion in that discipline. Ester Ledecka made history at the PyeongChang Games when she topped the podium in snowboard and skiing and she is already halfway to repeating that feat by claiming gold this week in snowboarding. In other news Wimbledon is taking another step to equality by fixing ticket prices for women in line with the men. Australia’s Cricket Team convincingly defeated England in the Ashes Series. And in football 19 year old Trinity Rodman marked a milestone by signing the highest NWSL contract worth $1.1 million and she has also been called up to replace the injured Abby Dahlkemper for the USWNT She Believes Cup Roster.

The Australian Open crowned a new champion last weekend with home-country heroine Ash Barty successfully defeating Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6. Australia beat Ireland to win the Spain Sevens Rugby with the US just out of the medals. We have World Cup skiing news from last weekend’s Downhill and Super-G which were won by Switzerland’s Corrine Suter and Austria’s Connie Heuter. With the Winter Olympics starting this week we hear that Elana Meyers Taylor tested positive to Covid upon arrival in Beijing, and the IOC warned against "inappropriate" Peng Shuai meeting during the Games. Plus we have football news from both the NWSL and WSL as well as cricket from Down Under where England have work today in the Ashes series. We begin though with rugby since the USA Women's Sevens won gold in Malaga. Our own Leo's Den podcasters Naya Tapper Oly and Ilona Maher celebrate standout performances: Naya becomes the top try scorer in US rugby and Lo won the Player of the Final Award. Finishing their last tournament in Dubai in seventh place, the USA women are showing constant evolution on the world stage, now ranked fourth overall with two events to go. Undefeated in every game contested, defeating rivals Canada, Poland, Great Britain, France and Russia for their first gold medal since the Glendale Sevens in 2019. This was the third tournament in the 2021-22 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Next stop Seville for the next tournament this coming weekend.

We begin this week with World Cup Bobsled and Monobob. American Elana Meyers Taylor secured both titles last weekend in St. Moritz and not surprisingly has secured her fourth Olympic ticket. Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami won the Downhill in Zauchensee, Austria last weekend and then Italy’s Italian Federica Brignone won the Super-G. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), Petra Vlhova (SLO) and Sofia Goggia (ITA) currently top the overall World Cup standings as the women head to Cortina d’Ampezzo for another Downhill and Super G this weekend. We kick off this week with the Olympic Games just three weeks away and selection trials happening around the world. American Elana Meyers Taylor stamps her place in Monobob, which will be making its debut in Beijing. She currently leads in women’s monobob points after winning this past weekend’s World Cup race in Winterberg, Germany. Her teammate, Kaillie Humphries, narrowly missed the medals finishing in fourth place but teamed with Sylvia Hoffman to claim the bronze medal in the two-woman bobsled World Cup race. Elana Meyers Taylor and Kaysha Love had the fastest run in the second heat and finished just behind their teammates in fourth. In World Cup skiing there was an outstanding victory for Sweden’s Sara Hector in Kranjska Gora Giant Slalom to put her on top of that discipline rankings, Meanwhile Slovakian Petra Vlhova continues he winning streak by adding the Kranjski Gora slalom to her CV but was beaten by her arch rival Mikaela Shiffrin in Schladming 15 hundreths of a second. There is also news from tennis, cycling, baseball, basketball and speedskating with a story of sportsmanship by American Brittany Bowe making our headline story.

Chris & Nancy kick off the first show of the year with a new look and name for the weekly news podcast that we like to call the News Desk since that’s what we are all about heading into Season 4. And we begin with a round up of the winter sports that have been headlining: World Cup two-women bobsled heralded the holidays with a win for the American duo of Elana Meyers Taylor and Lake Kwaza. In alpine skiing the Slovakian slalomist Petra Vlhova won the last two slalom races in Lienz and Zagreb and finished second in the Lienz GS giving her a lead of 140 points in the slalom rankings ahead of American Mikaela Shiffrin who had to miss Lienz when she tested positive to Covid-19. Mikaela was back racing in Zagreb this week finishing runner-up to Petra. We look ahead to the Australian Open Tennis, which runs January 17-30 and share our expectations of the first grand slam of the year. As 2021 comes to a close we look back at what has been an extraordinary year for women in sport. We have each chosen a handful of remarkable performances from a variety of sports, which will always be stand-out achievements, personal bests for the athletes and go down in the history of their sport. There are so many adjectives to describe what women have accomplished this year as the standards continue to improve, and records are continually broken. There is nothing to compare with the guts and determination of these dedicated athletes whose goals may have been achieved this year but new ones will be set for the future. It has been and continues to be a thrill to watch women continue to soar to greater heights in their sports and show what is possible. And just when we think that a record that cannot be broken we see another generation break down barriers, train even harder, take on tougher competition and excel in themselves while showing the world the potential for women in any sport, anywhere in the world.

The Italian bullet that is Sofia Goggia stole the show at Lake Louise this past weekend with a hat-trick in the Super Gs and Downhill with American Breezy Johnson being her main threat in two races and Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami in the second Super G. Modern Pentathlon Olympic Silver Medalist, World Champion, Performance Consultant, Speaker and Coach Samantha Murray joins Chris & Nancy this week to explain the workings of the governing body in the light of the UIPM’s decision to drop the equestrian phase of the sport. We begin this week’s top news stories with an update from Modern Pentathlon and a proposal by its international federation the UIPM to replace the equestrian discipline with cycling. This follows the incident in Tokyo of a German rider and trainer who were in the lead at the time being eliminated for abusing the horse. Another update from the Olympics involves beach handball and the dress code being updated following criticism and sexism regarding the bikini rule. We have the final qualifiers for the WTA Final taking place next week in Guadalajara, Mexico. US Softball has named Heather Tarr as its Head Coach, Welsh rugby is making history by awarding professional contracts to the women’s team. Germany’ Isabell Werth won the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2021/2022 Western European League qualifier in Lyon, France with the 16-year-old mare Weihegold OLD with whom she claimed the last three series titles. England cricketer Sarah Taylor has been given a groundbreaking coaching appointment with a men’s team. The Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee is at odds with the local union. Britain’s motor racing driver Jamie Chadwick is our top story this week having clinched the 2021 W Series title. Jamie’s consistency this season showed how talented a driver she is and as a development driver for the Williams team she is poised to move up to Formula 1. It’s been 40 years since a woman was on the starting grid of Formula 1 and now there are a number of women hungry to achieve that ultimate ambition. World Cup seasons in Skiing and Dressage took place last weekend with American Mikaela Shiffrin winning the Giant Slalom in Soelden ahead of Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami. And Danish rider Cathrine Dufour aboard the 18 year old Atterupgaards Cassidy won the first leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup 2021/2022 Western European League on home soil in Herning ahead of compatriots Carina Cassøe Krüth and Heiline’s Danciera with the Dutch duo of Dinja van Liere and Hermes in third. Germany’s eventing queen Ingrid Klimke showed her versatility aboard the 13 year old stallion Franziskus 15 finishing seventh of the 14 riders. It’s been another week of great lead stories in women’s sport and we begin with Britain's all-women team of Nicola Wilson, Piggy March and Sarah Bullimore scooping all the medals at the European Eventing Championships with team veteran Nicola Wilson recovering from a broken neck in 2019 to becoming the European Team and Individual Champion. In tennis Wimbledon Champion Ash Barty weighs up the challenges of travel against playing the rest of the year in the lead up to the Australian Open where she may meet the defending champion Naomi Osaka who seems to be getting her appetite back for the sport following her personal challenges. Basketball’s golden girl Sue Bird is also weighing up retirement and her wedding plans to USWNT winger Megan Rapinoe. Speaking of retirement, U.S. Gymnast Simone Biles who was a victim of abuse by Larry Nassar, has said that she should have retired before Tokyo. We have more on that story. And Nancy also has an update about the continued threat by the Taliban to the Afghan Women’s Volleyball Team and other female athletes. Plus there’s NWSL and WSL news as well as an upset in netball. Emma Raducanu's stunning victory at the U.S. Open is headlines around the sports world so it's not surprising that for the fifth time in seven years the women's final has topped the men's in viewing figures in the US according to ESPN—women’s final 2.442m. Men’s final 2.051m. Germany's Jessica von Bredahl Werndl and DSF Dalera won all three gold medals at the 2021 European Dressage Championship to add to her double gold from Tokyo. Also maintaining her Olympic form is gold medalist Carissa Moore who went on to win her fifth World Surf League title in California this week. And so did Australian Canoeist/Kayaker Jessica Fox who finished the 2021 Canoe Slalom World Cup season in style, both winning not only golds in Pau in canoe slalom and kayak, but also the overall World Cup series title. World number one and four-time world champion American surfer Carissa Moore took the gold medal this week in Tokyo as the sport found its way into the Olympic program for the first time. She dominated all of her heats and scored 14.93 in the final to beat South Africa's Bianca Buitendag, who managed 8.46. Sky Sports News Producer Sarah Dawkins joins Chris and Nancy from Tokyo to discuss the first days of competition at the Olympic Games. Which events and athletes have stood out for her and what she is looking forward to as medals are decided this first week. As we recorded the show this week the news broke that Simone Biles withdrew from the team gymnastics final and her teammates went on to secure the silver medal. Football gets down to the quarter-final stages with Sweden looking very strong contenders for the gold medal. With two days to go the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the news from Tokyo is coming thick and fast, and it’s not all good news as Nancy explains in her round up of the top stories. Also Chris spoke to former New Zealand Football Fern midfielder Katie Duncan about the Olympic tournament and what the Ferns can expect. Katie made 131 appearance for the Ferns, including three Olympic Games and three World Cups, plus two U20 World Cups. In her amazing career she also played for Bad Neuenahr, Notts County, FC Zurich and Melbourne Victory. Since retiring at the end of 2019 Katie has been coaching three teams while she and her wife; former Ferns player Cilla Duncan, raise a family. They have a two year daughter Nadia and are expecting a second child later this year.

Tennis is the top story this week as Wimbledon gets down to the quarter final stages. Britain’s Emma Raducanu, 18, made it through to the fourth round in her Wimbledon debut and made a name for herself with a determined fight against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic before being forced to retire when she was not feeling well in the second set. Emma’s retirement due to health concerns comes after the withdrawal of 23 year old Naomi Osaka from the French Open and Wimbledon after she was feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of her media responsibilities. And last week it was the American sprinter 21 year old Sha’Carrie Richardson who turned to Marijuana, a forbidden substance under IOC rules, to help her cope with the news of her mother’s death. The laser focus that elite athlete’s come under clearly imposes a unique pressure at a young age which we discuss. Chris shares her highlights from the US Women’s Soccer Team Send Off Series where the USA came a way with 4-0 victories in both games. Tobin Heath earned her place in the starting line up against Mexico this week when the US played the second of their friendly games. In last week’s game Heath returned to the squad after injuries to score within a minute of coming off the bench in the second half. And she underlined her form for the Tokyo Olympics by scoring again in the first half of last night’s game. While it was 4-0 in both games, the only difference was that in the second game all the goals came in the first half.

Nancy is back and our guest this week is Syrian player, coach and referee Sarah Abd Elbaki whose involvement in rugby began when she three and a half years ago. Sarah was the captain of the Syrian women national team in the last tournament participating in what was the Arab 7s championship, which was held in Egypt where they won the silver medal. She is Head of Women's Rugby Development in Syria, Assistant Coach of the men's national team, the first Arab Asia woman referee and the first female to officiate a domestic 15's rugby match in Syria. Sarah is also a member in Asia Rugby competitions committee, and an advisory board member for Girls Rugby Club. She has recently been selected as one of Asia Rugby Unstoppables and she was also awarded World Rugby women's executive leadership scholarship among 12 recipients across the globe.

Chris and Nancy look back on 2020 in this review of women’s sport in a year like no other in our lifetime. The disruption to sport caused by a global pandemic will make the year memorable for all the wrong reasons. Before the winter was out the calendar was upended and cancellations scribbled across dates around the globe from grassroots to Olympic Games. Uncertainty was wrapped in confusion and chaos walked the hallways of sport’s governance. So many questions and so few answers left athletes stranded and perplexed as gyms closed and training routines were forced to detour. The ripple effect has been far reaching across venues, organizers, sponsors and industries that supply the sports world far and wide. Yet as it became clear that there was some hope and sport would find a way to prevail, albeit singing a different tune as empty stadiums echoed a hollow sound bereft of crowds. We were concerned that there would be no competition to report on some ten months ago and yet as the year unfolded we found plenty of stories to share in women’s sport. And some would say that while the same issues facing women continue to be a constant undertone there was a glimmer of light beyond the dark clouds, and even some good news emerging from this annus horribilis.

Chris and Nancy roundup the top stories from around the world of women’s sport and this week we revisit an interview with Kacey Lee Bellamy an American ice hockey defender, Olympic gold and two-time silver medalist, and seven-time IIHF World Women's Championship winner. She currently plays for the Boston Pride in the National Women's Hockey League and the United States women's national ice hockey team. Earlier this week, Chris spoke to US Bobsled's three-time Olympian - the only woman to win back to back gold medals and a three-time World Champion, Kaillie Humphries who had just completed the US National Trials and made the squad for the 2022 Olympic Games. She is now in the process of making the cut to compete at next year's World Championships and the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. If you’ve been following the sport, you will know that prior to the 2018-19 season, Kaillie bravely came forward about the harassment she faced from the governing body of professional Canadian bobsledding. She filed a lawsuit to be released from Canada’s national team in September, 2019 and joined Team USA. Like many female athletes in recent years, Kaillie risked her career to stand up publicly against a sports’ governing body. As one of Canada’s most decorated athletes of all time, she made the difficult personal and professional choice to leave her home country.

As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, Zoe has played in two International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championships winning gold in 2015 and 2016) and a Four Nations Cup winning in 2015. She also helped the Boston Pride win the Isobel Cup in the inaugural season of the National Women's Hockey League (2015-16) and played four seasons of professional hockey following her collegiate career. Before taking up her new role at Ohio State Zoe played for the Swedish team Linköping HC for the 2019-2020 season. Zoe shares how they are coping with training and maintaining moral while the team waits for the season to begin.

As we continue to observe social distancing athletes are having a tough time maintaining much of their training routine while events are cancelled and there is no timeframe to restart competitions for most of them. We’ve been finding out from some of our WiSP Ambassadors how they are adjusting their fitness routines or improvising training. Irish Motor Racing Driver Nicole Drought has been switching her fast wheels for slower ones as a way of maintaining some fitness and is using a simulator to learn a new car that she is yet to drive this season.
