In this episode, Gavin talks to Matthew Adshead.

Matthew Adshead is the co-proprietor with his wife Jenny and former Headmaster of The Old Vicarage School in Derbyshire, a co-ed, independent preparatory school for children aged 3 to 11. He also runs an education consultancy, as well as an events business.

Matthew was state educated and describes himself as being blessed to have come from a loving and supportive home, with very supportive parents and older brother. He recognises that he has always been a people person, but school and the school system didn't really work for him. He struggled at school, especially emotionally, in his teenage years, to the point where he became unable to attend at times, when he was 15. He suffered with some mental health issues at that time, which were compounded by being bullied by one of his teachers. However, he views those experiences as being pivotal in helping him develop his values in relation to the pastoral care of children in education.

He sees it as a touch ironic, but also right, that he eventually chose education and teaching as his main career path, despite a brief distraction, when he worked in media and television for just over a year. He trained to be a teacher as a postgraduate at Cambridge University, where he developed the desire to become an independent school proprietor – effectively owning and running his own independent school.

He was diagnosed with and successfully treated for cancer, in 2005. At the close of that same year, he also experienced the sudden death of his Headmaster, a significant mentor, who was killed whilst in service, in a car accident. These two experiences made Matthew realise that life is too short to dwell and you should pursue your dreams. In 2007, with his wife Jenny (taking on the role of Bursar), they took ownership of the Old Vicarage School, in Darley Abbey, in Derbyshire.

Since then, Matthew has also served as a director and national representative on The Independent Schools Association Executive Board; he has been a director on the Independent Schools Council Board, and continues to serve as a board director of a leading independent boarding school in York, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate. For three years, he served as an Honorary Officer for the Independent Schools Association and for the academic year 2018 – 2019, he was their National Chairman.

Dan Reed is the lead vocalist and composer for the 'Dan Reed Network' (DRN).  After nearly three years of playing three to four shows a week in Portland andSeattle, and everywhere in between, DRN signed to Polygram Records in 1987 and went on to tour as a support act for RUN DMC, UB40, Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones 1990 Urban Jungle European Tour.

He decided to take a break from the industry and got involved in theater and film acting, writing and producing film, and later becoming the co-owner of a Live Music/EDM club called 'The Ohm' in Portland.

After the release of his 5th solo album 'Liftoff' in January 2021 Dan is focused on the next Dan Reed Network Album entitled 'Let's Hear it for the King', along with the accompanying film highlighting the new music called 'Supernova' which he scripted and directed in Prague and will be release late 2021.
