Phoenix Attitude: Recent Episodes

Jenna Reed-Côté, RSW MSW

I’m Jenna Reed-Côté. I’m a registered social worker with a Masters degree and a counselling practice through Phoenix Attitude Inc. called “Counselling & Health Advocacy by Jenna Reed-Côté”. For this podcast I’m chatting with people who’ve taught me how to rise from the ashes and how to help others do the same. They also don’t need to be told twice that they can ask questions and challenge me, too. Meaning conversations you really don’t want to miss if personal growth is what you’re after. I know you have a choice in the social worker you work with, thank you for choosing me today. Now buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Marco Pasqua is an award-winning Entrepreneur, Accessibility Consultant and Inspirational Speaker whose speaking topics are focused on his personal stories of overcoming obstacles and managing major life transitions. He first started speaking in front of large audiences at the age of 10; it was then that he realized the impact that words can have. Since then, he's been involved with a number of organizations as a spokesperson, spreading advocacy for persons with disabilities across Canada, and proving that anything is possible when you invest the right kind of energy and creativity.

He's also a new DAD!

Today we're talking parenting with a disability and how accessibility can help break down a lot of the barriers (so you can save your energy for the teenage years)!

Adam Crow is the founder of Revival Fitness, which he started in 2010. He graduated with honours in psychology and is always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow.

We're taking the occasion of the 5th anniversary of finishing Tough Mudder (half) to chat about the role vulnerability played in our journey to Tough Mudder and beyond.

He’s been helping me get stronger in my body, mind and spirit ever since, while also helping me learn how to do the same for others.

Lia was born to be my next guest.

Lia's here with me today to give a voice to all the “healthy” siblings out there trying to be seen while their siblings are dealing with chronic health challenges. This voice is rarely heard because our instinct is to focus on the person in the hospital bed. D'oh!

She may be my sister but she's pretty impressive, too. She's in the final stretch of her Masters degree in psychotherapy (after getting an offer to the program a mere months after graduating with honours in Psychology). Right now her goal is to start a private practice to support people with mood disorders, but she's still got time to change her mind!

Claire Moscone-Biafore has been an osteopath and athletic therapist for 20 years which seems to be fuelled by a teeny tiny passion for empowering female athletes. She is a world champion in Shotokan karate, has 3 kids, 2 puppies, 1 husband and probably a partridge in a pear tree somewhere.

There was no template for training someone in karate with all my health challenges and that alone would scare most people away from being open to the process. Not Claire. She came into training me assuming ability then adjusted so that I was always kept just on the boundary of my comfort zone.

What are a couple of tools Claire taught me at karate that ended up serving me as a human and I now use to support my clients in counselling? What advice does she have for people who are on the fence about mentoring someone with health challenges like mine? You'll have to listen to find out.
