This week, Jeremy and Alex discuss the task of taking dominion in light of the reality of death. On the one hand, death’s power has been definitively broken in the death of Christ. On the other hand, death’s presence will remain until the return of Christ, when He will destroy His final enemy.

One of the dangers we face in our path of following Christ is the temptation to desire the many good gifts He gives more than Him. Jesus Christ is merciful and good, and there are countless blessings to His reign. Western culture has experienced many of these. But it is possible to love justice, and the rule of law, and human dignity, and free markets, and family, and freedom and not love Christ. And it is no profit to man to gain the whole world and lose Christ.Show Sponsor: Resistance Coffee Co

This week we discuss the recent comments of an NDP MP, who stated explicitly that parents do not have any rights, and further commented that the only responsibility of parents is to ‘affirm’ children’s desires. These dangerous comments reflect the view of the tyrannical State, which is characteristic of unbelief. Parents need to prepare for what is coming. This week Alex is joined by Jacob Leeming to discuss his recent article, and how a so-called conservative movement that isn’t founded on Christ is a dead-end. It has no objective moral basis or transcendent principles to appeal to. It is simply defined in proximity to ‘the left’, which is why conservatives eventually end up with leftist policy and principles. They don’t conserve anything. What we need is a full-fledged, unapologetic appeal to Christ as Lord, and acknowledge a ‘conservatism’ untethered from Him is a failure from the start.

Since the pagan worldview is built upon the accumulation and wielding of power, they naturally gravitate towards positions with the most power. And they tend to subsume all other spheres of authority under the ‘highest’ authority; in most cases, the State.

Christians, however, recognize the importance of every sphere of life, and the biblical priority of what is immediately in front of us: our own hearts, our families, our actual neighbours, churches, businesses, etc. Practically, this local emphasis means we ought not be consumed with federal politics, but rather, take responsibility in our own local setting. This includes praying for and encouraging Christians to take up the role of lesser magistrate at the municipal level, which is also an effective buffer against State tyranny.

This week we are joined by Pastor Jacob Reaume of Trinity Bible Chapel in Waterloo to discuss these issues, and how Christians can actively participate in politics at a local level.

Many Christians, including us, don’t really care to be involved in politics, and find the whole scene kind of shady. But if we surrender the entire field to the pagans, it’s only going to get worse.

This week we kick things off by considering the nature of our ruling class, and how they are characterized by the abdication of responsibility, and the ever-increasing assumption of authority. This dynamic is the antithesis to biblical leadership, in which responsibility and authority always correspond. We consider how the task of ‘undoing’ this mess begins at an individual level.

God has ultimate authority, and delegates authority to humanity.

All human authority is limited and defined by God.

The rightful exercise of authority is a good and necessary aspect of God's purposes in the world. However, because of sin, authority is often abdicated or abused.

Authoritarianism is the sinful and foolish tendency to either wrongly assume authority to oneself,or ascribe it to others .Authoritarianism is the enemy of human flourishing, and results in chaos, neglect, abuse, and misery.  It is the pattern of sinful humanity, and sadly, prevalent in the world and even the church today.

The gospel rightly orders all authority under Christ, and empowers and instructs us how to rightly exercise authority for God's glory and the good of others.

The Bible, not our own cultural and temperamental sensitivities, should inform how we speak to one another.

One of the oft-employed forms of speech used by God and his people is satire.

This form of speech is necessary in the face of pride, vice, and folly, and should be employed by Christians in a manner consistent with Scripture.

As Leland Ryken writes,

"... tone (the writer’s attitude toward the material) is crucial in satire.  Two modes of satiric attack exist:  satirists can either laugh vice and folly out of existence, or they can lash vice and folly out of existence. "

Christians, especially Canadians, are prone to have a more narrow view of sanctified language than the Bible. This is a problem.

This week we are joined by our friend and brother, Andrew, to discuss the godly use of satire.

One of the greatest temptations of God's people has always been to 'blend' the values, priorities, and worship of their God with the worship of cultural 'gods'. This is called syncretism.

The blending of cultural values and worship with Christian values and worship produces 'cultural' Christianity.

This cultural Christianity is a counterfeit, and must be rejected.

Join us as we discuss the unique ditches of Canadian culture, and how they have shaped the Church.

View Details

One of the constant temptations for God's people has always been to blend the values, practises, and worship of the surrounding culture with the Christian faith.

This is the danger of syncretism.

Compliance as an inherent good is a Canadian value. But it is not a biblical virtue.

In fact, there can be no meaningful discipleship without daily, moment-by-moment non-compliance.

Many Canadian Christians don't realize how they have been more shaped by the values of the surrounding culture than Scripture. This is especially true when we think about non-compliance.

However, Paul tells us not to be conformed to the world, but transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom 12:1-2).

This means, on the ground, adopting a posture and practise of non-compliance.

This week, Jeremy and Alex discuss the nature and reality of persecution against Christians. Jesus promised his people that they, like him, would be persecuted.

Oddly, many North American Christians are eager to deny the reality of persecution against the church. This is likely owing to a naive, romantic and privileged perspective on persecution.

We discuss several false assumptions people have about persecutions, and what Scripture actually teaches.

We need to acknowledge the reality of persecution so that we can be faithful through it.

All of human existence in a fallen world involves risk. We must, therefor, learn to live faithfully  in a dangerous world.

In our privileged culture, many people have adopted the ideology of 'safetyism', which assumes we can (and should) avoid all risk, no matter how minuscule.

This irrational, reductionistic and hysteric way of thinking is very dangerous to human flourishing.

Safetyism only acknowledges certain risks, and certain needs, at the expense of all others.

Ultimately, it is a selfish, self-protective, fear-filled and foolish posture. It causes great harm, and should be confronted with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel frees us to live a life of self-giving, wisdom, and the fear of the Lord. We can assess all risks rationally, and recognize the complexity of human needs.

Where have all the dudes gone?

Our world is facing a crisis of masculinity. A big reason we are in the mess we are is because we don't have men who joyfully assume sacrificial responsibility.  If we are to fulfill our task of living under the rule of Christ, and ruling over creation in His name, we need a recovery of biblical masculinity.

This week Alex and Jeremy discuss the central role of work to human flourishing. This reality is ultimately owing to the fact that God works, and He has created us in His image and given us work to do.

View Details

In the past year, the world has experienced restrictions to human freedoms on a scale that has, perhaps, never been experienced before.

Just as concerning as these restrictions to human freedom is the response to the restrictions, or lack thereof.

Often, advocating for human freedom is viewed as fundamentally selfish; even dangerous to the greater good. But this betrays a profoundly unbelieving and regressive view of human flourishing, and the role freedom plays in that.

Sadly, the Church in Canada has often perpetuated the lie that we can love our neighbour by robbing them of their liberty. This is unbiblical, unloving, and historically naive folly.

The Gospel, however, is the foundational solution to all slavery, and produces the kinds of people who love their neighbour enough to care about their freedom, even if it is costly to themselves.

In this episode, we discuss the recent arrest of Pastor James Coates of Grace Life Church in Alberta. Pastor James faithfully executed his duties as a shepherd of Christ's flock, and was imprisoned for it.

Sadly, many Christians have joined the chorus of the world's accusers. This event has further revealed the deep hypocrisy and unbelief in the Canadian Church, as well as muddled thinking and biblical illiteracy.

The bible exhorts Christians to honour such men, share in their sufferings, and not be ashamed of Christ.

Thankfully, Jesus Christ died for cowards and failures, like the Apostle Peter. He was preserved by Christ, and given a ministry of testifying to the rulers and authorities.

May God have mercy on us. Pray for Pastor James and his family.

God has ordained various 'sphere's of responsibility and authority in culture, and it is the Christian's duty to recognize and uphold them. These 'spheres' are meant to exist in harmony with one another; not in opposition to one another.

We cannot live faithfully, loving both God and neighbour, if we have a deficient or dysfunctional view of the various spheres God has ordained for human flourishing; the individual, family, church, and government.

We live in a time when all responsibility (and authority) is being delegated to one particular sphere: the government.

Christians, however, must recognize the limited, God-ordained role of the government, without dismissing the legitimate, God-ordained role of the individual, the family, and the Church.

Two fundamental questions every person must ask are, 'What is truth?', and 'How can I know it?'.

These aren't just the questions of philosophers, but every individual seeking to live their daily life.

We live in a time where truth is no longer objective, but relativized. Christians must hold fast to the fact that truth is objective, rooted in the reality of a transcendent God who has revealed himself to us. He has done so in the created world, and most fully in the person of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are living in a 'courage crisis'.

C.S. Lewis famously commented that "courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point...".  That is to say, courage is necessary for the exercise of any virtue, because all virtue requires courage when tested.

The Scriptures call us to courage, and condemn cowardice. That is because without courage, there is not real faithfulness.

Our world is  gripped by ideological thinking. Our public discourse is increasingly marked by polarization, tribalism, hostility, and the inability to have meaningful interaction with those we disagree with. With the aid of social media, we lock ourselves into echo chambers where our beliefs and caricatures of others are simply reinforced. Our public 'education' is increasingly ideological training.

All of this pattern of behaviour is, in biblical terms, folly. The antidote is wisdom.

The Gospel is the antidote to ideology, because it is the wisdom of God, and produces wisdom in us. Through the new birth, we are set free from our most enslaving biases, and given the capacity to see the world as it truly is, with Christ at the centre.
