Our first ever guest—ESTELLA LOW is in the UCH house! We talk her and C’s enduring friendship—first dates, first impressions and moving in together…how similar and how different they both are.

This week, we’re doing the EP a ‘lil different. C shares about Calling, off a life-changing lesson that she had with Paul Scanlon at his mentorship group.
We start with what it was like to have grown up with a charismatic, evangelical definition of ‘calling’—the beauty and severe flaws that came with it, and how we’ve been trying to redefine it at The Evolution.
We talk about how everyone is born with their calling ‘in-built’, the way calling differs from identity and how to uncover both. Then, what to do with resistance to our callings—everything from imposter syndrome, to disagreeing with where the calling might take us, and the struggle with our ego…with wanting to experience personal success and see ‘the end’ within our lifetime.
Calling comes with responsibility versus feeling capable, abiding strength instead of clear instructions. We need to embrace the ‘classroom’ of that tension, navigating both the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ energies calling brings with it so we can keep moving forwards and creating true legacy.

So. Singapore is working changes to go endemic, and the world is headed into a 3rd year of living with COVID. Our adrenal glads are shot, and we’re all consciously or unconsciously responding (or REACTING) to anxiety. Some of us are dying to change things up, some us want to withdraw and shut down, some of us feel guilty (wait what? Yep. ) about loving WFH too much. lol.

Everyone should get woke—BUT, ‘woke’ often gets convoluted with ‘cancel’, resulting in of people and situations being painted with a sweeping brush.
In this EP, we discuss the overwhelming need for greater sensitivity to those who have been hurt by power and privilege, but also the difference between demanding accountability and cancelling someone simplistically. We talk what is means to move the needle forward—how social justice advocates and social scientists alike are finding that guilt and accountability motivates transformation, while shaming and bullying sets back social justice instead of moving change forward.
The intricacies of free speech come up again—that racist and sexist comments ARE NOT free speech, just plain wrong. And C shares her frustration with three types of people who claim “I’m being cancelled”, that it’s often a cover for pride, fragility and laziness. We revisit why anonymous posting, why it’s need but also how the lack of ethics behind our desire for attention on social media can corrupt good tools. Who are the real victims? Are there too many jumping on the cancel bandwagon because it’s trendy? And is there only one correct way of being ‘woke’ and playing our part?

We discuss the impact social media is having on youth—their identity, self-esteem, body image, values and behaviour. Selina, one of The Evolution’s youth leaders also joins us with some stunning stories as we get candid about sex education, pornography, consent and the pressure boys feel to ‘be one of the boys’. We also doll out some pretty real talk about parenting.
In the second half, C + K respond to a defensive Christian response to the Christian youth in Singapore who self-radicalised. We defend The Straits Times opinion article “S’pore teen detained under ISA: Wake-up call for Christian community” written by associate editor Chua Mui Hoong, and talk how exclusivism can be a precursor to extremist behaviour. C argues that physical violence is not the only way we enact violence; that othering, excluding and being hurtful in the name of exclusive Christianity is also a kind of psychological violence.
