On our big season four finale, hosts Matthew Paolizzi and Samuel Brungo are joined by associate producers Jordan Mansberger and Will Pegler to interview NFL Hall of Famer and Penn State Football Alumnus, Franco Harris.

Franco starts the show talking about his journey to Penn State, his draft story, and the beginning of his young Hall of Fame NFL career. This includes stories about playing in high school, college, and professionally as well as his recruiting battles, conversations with Joe Paterno, and his fun draft day story.

Harris then talks about some of the influences and role models he has had in his life, leading him to talk about his commitment to service and to the communities he is involved in. This includes business ventures and outreach such as his involvement with Super Bakery, a nutrition bakery for school children and the Park’s Sausage Company in Baltimore, which was the first African American owned business to go public in the United States.

Franco talks about being inducted into the Hall of Fame and what it means to him. Wrapping up his interview, Franco talks about Penn State football and how he thinks the program is heading in the right direction, noting its 2021 draft class (including the Steelers 2nd Round Pick that he announced, Pat Friermuth).

Finally, we bid farewell to our Co-Founder and Host, Matt Paolizzi. With parting words, Pao tells the story of how Podward State came to fruition from an idea to a multi-platform show interviewing some of Penn State and State College's biggest names. On this episode of Podward State, host Samuel Brungo is joined by associate producer and Onward State sports editor William Hutchinson Pegler, III to chat with former Penn State, UMass Tight End, Adam Breneman.

Adam starts off the show by talking about his recruiting process. After being a four star, the second highest ranked tight end in his class, he was highly touted and sought out by top programs such as Notre Dame and Alabama. After receiving an offer from Joe Paterno's staff, Breneman knew he wanted to play for his hometown team.

Following the breaking of the scandal, Breneman talks about the wild turn of events that occurred during his recruiting process, leading him to commit to Bill O'Brien. He chats about why he chose to stay and be a part of the program despite the sanctions and what it means for him to be a part of that group of players who stayed.

Adam then dives into his college career, noting the ups and downs. He talks about his breakout freshman year, his injury issues, the coaching change, all leading up to his retirement and transfer to UMass years later. Breneman tells us some great stories about his teammates, specifically about his good friend and roommate Mike Gesicki and his wild eating habits.

After his second and final retirement from football following two All American seasons at UMass, Adam took a shot in the media world. He discusses what that experience was like, hosting his own podcast and some of the guests that he had on that show.

Bill starts the show talking about his recruiting process and what it was like being recruited by legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno after having previously being committed to Pitt. Being a member of the team during the dark days in 2012, Belton recalls what it was like to be part of that program at that time, the legacy that it holds, and why ultimately led him to stay at Penn State amid sanctions and penalty-free transfers.

Belton is best known for his 90+ yard touchdown and his 4OT walk off against Michigan and he gives us a breakdown on what those two plays meant to him and how they unfolded.

Finally, Bill tells us about his transition from playing in the NFL to his current job, coaching. As offensive coordinator of his Alma Mater, Belton talks about his reunion with Christian Hackenberg and how the two of them can really help influence their young team.

Now that's Hockey Talk!

Podward State is an Onward State-produced podcast. Onward State is an independent, student-run Penn State news site that works to generate honest conversation in the hopes of enriching the Penn State community.

Podward State was founded by Matthew Ogden and Matthew Paolizzi in 2019. They have covered a plethora of topics and hosted numerous guests including UPUA President Zach McKay and 2018 PA Senate Candidate Ezra Nanes. Podward State will be releasing weekly episodes this Fall semester, which will be available on Spotify and YouTube.

There are only 20 days left until the election, so Podward State hooked it up with a great interview with Ezra Nanes and Laura Shadle, two Pennsylvania state election experts who break down everything you need to know in order to make your voices heard on November 3rd.

Ezra Nanes was the 2018 Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania's State Senate (34th District) and Director of Business Development at AccuWeather. Laura Shadle is the Centre County Jury Commissioner and the North Central Region Director for Pennsylvania Young Democrats.

The voter registration deadline in PA is Monday, October 19th, so if you aren't registered yet, we implore you to register while listening along to Ezra and Laura!

On this episode of Podward State, hosts Matt, Matt, and Sam talk to Onward State sports editor Will Pegler about everything surrounding the Big Ten's reinstatement of their Fall football season, including the Big Ten's mitigation protocols and the overall safety of football commencing in State College, which recently was named one of the fastest-growing hotspots in the country.

Later, we talk to two Onward State staffers, Teagan Staudenmeier and Grace Cunningham, who experienced Penn State's on-campus and off-campus quarantine protocols.

Staudenmeier spent five days in Penn State's on-campus isolation dorms at Eastview Terrace before receiving her negative coronavirus test. While in there, she experienced less than ideal room conditions and a lack of communication from Penn State administrators.

Cunningham quarantined from her off-campus apartment and also dealt with a concerning lack of communication, especially the lack of efficient contact tracing protocols.

Our sit-down interview with Penn State astrophysics professor Dr. Jason Wright is finally here! Dr. Wright discusses his research on the discovery of exoplanets. Wright is also a major player in the global search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Known as SETI, it’s been a growing field for decades, and Wright is at the forefront. He’s published multiple papers on the topic, was the recipient of the 2019 Drake Award from the SETI Institute and was recently profiled in a piece from The New Yorker on new methods of looking for alien civilizations.
