Welcome to One to Watch Wednesday, featuring independent and emerging Canadian artists and their songs!

In the spotlight this week is BC's country songstress Lisa Nicole! She's an award winning and nominated rising star with a stunning voice and incredible songs! This was such a fun conversation!

"Hailing from the mountains and nature of small-town Castlegar, British Columbia, Lisa Nicole grew up hunting, fishing, camping and embracing country music. As her childhood was sprinkled with the sounds of Shania Twain, Martina McBride, and the Dixie Chicks, Lisa Nicole discovered her own love of singing at the age of 8. By 15, she was playing regular jam sessions at Kootenay-area bars, which required her to be escorted on and off stage due to her age. After high school, Lisa Nicole followed her ambitions to Selkirk College of Contemporary Music and Technology, completing a Songwriting and Performance diploma with a Major in Vocals." - lisanicolemusic.com.

We talk about ALL of that and SO MUCH MORE!

When it comes to publicity, sharing your music, news and tour dates, interviews can be one of the most fun and gratifying ways to spread the word - since they’re all about your biggest passion - you AND of course your music!

These days, for independent and emerging artists, there are more media sources looking to interview musicians than ever before. Magazines, e-zines, blogs, podcasts, radio, TV, YouTube, etc...they're all out there! It's awesome!

As an interviewee, you know you’ll either be providing a journalist with context and quotes for a story or you'll be doing an audio/video conversation. You don’t want to just go on-air or get on the phone with a journalist or personality without having thought through some of the things you’ll talk about in advance.

In this educational episode of Studio B Podcast, we're joined by Logan Miller of Front Porch Music + Media! He's their amazing founder, a talented writer and social media guru! We talk all about how to give your best interviews for any outlet. From making generic question answers unique, to prepping for a question that you didn't see coming - we have you covered! If you’re worried about an upcoming interview, here’s some advice to help ease the jitters and have you sounding professional, unique and calm!

A MASSIVE thank you to Logan Miller for joining this episode of Studio B! Make sure you check out Front Porch Music + Media on their website or on all social media platforms!

Welcome to HomeMade in Alberta brought you by Studio B., featuring the rising stars of Alberta Country and their music!

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting The Prairie States about three years ago when they released their debut song Tongue Tied. Ever since then, it's been such a cool experience to watch them makes huge waves across the Alberta country music scene.

Since then, the band has released two more singles, Every Little Town and Low Life, both of which also cracked the top 100.

As seven time Country Music Alberta Award recipients, including the 2018 Rising Star, 2019 Horizon Group/Duo Of The Year, and 2020 Songwriters Of The Year, as well as 1st place in the 2018 Project Wild Artist Development Program, it’s proof that this Edmonton based band is moving in the right direction and they are kicking some serious butt.

Welcome to the first episode of One to Watch Wednesday, present by Studio B! A feature for independent and emerging artists on the rise and their songs!
This week, we're welcoming Indigenous Country singer/songwriter Stirling John and his song "Believe." He is a 34 year old musician at heart, who has also been a police officer for the past 14 years and serves as a Helicopter Tactical Flight Officer, is also in a band member called Hometown Stereo (Edmonton, AB) and is a super dad to some cool kids. Stirling was raised in a musical family in Ontario; however, work and life took a step ahead and music didn't revisit his life until a traumatic call in 2014.

2020 was Stirling’s breakout year FOR SURE!! Even through working fulltime during the pandemic with the RCMP as a frontline essential worker, he remained very proactive with writing and recording. "The Distance", "For You", "Never Meant to Be", and “Record Time,” were all brought out in 2020! So far, in 2021, he has been nominated for a 2021 "Community Spirit Award" with the Country Music Alberta Awards as well and released a beautifully inspirational song called, "Believe."

We are featuring Stirling's latest song, "Believe." We talk about his musical journey, his career as an RCMP officer, his soon to be superstar kids, how he is remaining proactive with his music throughout 2021 (you're going to be hearing a lot of his music this year and that's so exciting!), and about a new release coming out on Feb 14th called, "This I Know" Ft. Dahlia Wakefield (Dirt Road Angels).
You can find Stirling on Instagram, Facebook, on ALL music platforms and at johncountrymusic.com!

Happy New Year! With a new year comes new goals, resolutions and possibilities! This year can be anything you want it to be! Maybe you're looking to switch genres, try a new style or vibe, make some new music you've always wanted to, go solo or start a new project?
HUGE thank you to Patrick Kordyback for being our guest on this episode! He is the lead singer of the band STEREOS, which after an eight year hiatus is back and they dropped their new single Sunset Gold in February of 2020. They're also known for the bops, "Summer Girl," "Throw Your Hands Up" and "Turn It Up!" After appearing on a Much Music show called disBand that had unknown bands perform for industry judges and then get told whether they had what it took or if they should disband, their careers took off and they were one of the top bands in Canada. They're still together and going strong by the way! Patrick has decided to take another journey with his music (while also staying with STEREOS of course) and work on another project in the country genre - solo. He's been working alongside some top notch talent and industry to get things rolling. He's sharing advice and experience on all things new - when it comes to a new you (musically speaking), new project or new gig in the music industry.
Fun fact - I've seen STEREOS in concert twice. Once at The Gateway (SAIT) in 2009 and at The Den (University of Calgary) in 2011.
You can follow him on Instagram at @kordybacktothefuture and STEREOS at @wearestereos and of course on Facebook.

Of course, everyone knows exercise is good for a person’s health; however did you know that consistent exercise and physical activity might actually help make you a better musician, performer and artist too? You always have to be at your best while you're on stage - mentally and physically. Physical fitness and good nutrition are a great way to accomplish that so you can ALWAYS put on ONE HELL OF A SHOW! Big or small! There's a lot to cover with our guest - we discuss ALL the benefits of how physical fitness and nutrition will make you the best artist and performer you can be, on (and off) the stage! We talk about how exercise improves you as an artist and performer, (Better Breathing/Improved Posture/Strengthened Muscles/Increased Coordination/Sharper Thinking/Inspired Music-Making/Improves Performance Anxiety), scheduling work outs and working around busy schedules and tours and keeping fit on the road. Nutritional planning and hydration, and optimizing your health for your performance and life by eating better. We also talk about body image and much more. Disclaimer: I'm NOT a personal trainer, doctor or nutritionist, neither is my guest, Alberta rocker Clayton Bellamy - but we are two music industry professionals who are passionate about fitness and health, and we've seen the benefits and want to pass on our wisdom to you, to better you - the artist! Disclaimer: before you do anything that will effect your health, please consult a professional - talk to a trainer, doctor, health expert, please. You're probably wondering why I didn't get a personal trainer/fitness expert for this. I wanted someone who has experienced the positive benefits of all of this from an active performer, who understands the artist aspect of this, who's been doing this for several years, who's busy, who's always on the road, who's in various projects, (which are The Road Hammers, Clayton Bellamy and the Congregation and Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion, who's won many awards including a Juno, numerous Canadian Country Music Awards, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year, A Radio Music Award and Western Canadian Music Award, who has been featured in People Magazine, The NY Times, and Rolling Stone an who's released five solo records and has songs recorded by Big SugarMatt Anderson, Dan DavidsonJason BlaineW3aponsFKBWillie Mack and more HE'S STILL ON FIRE!) who understands the struggle is real - to juggle everything as a human AND artist, then trying to add being active and healthy on top of that - but he also understands how important this is for you. Also, HAVE YOU SEEN HIM ON STAGE? He's performance goals! Vocally and with his physicality! You hear his song "Resistorz" in the podcast and you can find him on all social media under Clayton Bellamy and @claytonbellamy.

Good news, radio listening still accounts for much, much more than all the streaming services combined when it comes to sharing your music with the world, but also for that reason, it’s still one of the most competitive ways to get your music heard. Radio airplay doesn’t just happen, it’s usually what happens after months or years of hard hard work - gaining an audience on other platforms, building up relationships in the industry, and growing your network. However, there are ways you can take to boost your odds of getting on the air. I brought in former radio hostess with the Artist Rep, Project Manager, Creative Consultant with Straight Arrow and At Heart Branding Co. and all around peoples champ when it comes to supporting indie, emerging and green artists, Stephanie Bakker on this episode to talk about boosting your chances of getting on the radio!
We discuss how it’s important to be realistic, persistent and most of all, make music that will grab the attention of influencers and radio stations. We talk about which types of radio stations you should be talking and at what level of their careers you should be talking to certain ones. We talk about commercial and non-commercial, but there are three kinds of "markets:" small, medium, large. We talk about picking the right song for radio and what radio stations are looking for in a song you send to them.
We share what you should do first before you even think about releasing a song to radio. We talk about professionally approaching radio stations, Program Directors, Music Directors and on-air personalities. Building a realistic, easily managed radio campaign and EPK's. We discuss the role of Radio Trackers and we also take you on the road with getting prepared for radio tours and even a few surprises in there!

It's been a minute since we've hung out, but hello again! Thanks for coming back! This week, I am bringing you Calgary's singer, songwriter and budding (and excelling) producer and graphic designer Julianna Laine! Up until recently, she was probably known as a finalist in 2018’s Project Wild, a radio competition that tends to focus on Nashville-ready country artists. She just released her new single, "Eighteen" under her new genre of bedroom pop and it's a bop! She is the founder of and graphic designer and creative for Not Your Designer. She's also a traveler and surfer... so what I'm saying, is she is just the coolest! You're going to love this episode! We talk about her travels and how that helped her discover her new sound and how you can travel casually and get shows successfully on the road. We discuss graphic design and about Not Your Designer and how to approach graphic designers with you vision and how you can work with them to have you design dreams come true! We of course talk about the (growing in popularity and her new genre) bedroom pop and about what it is, and about at home production and exploring and becoming more confident with your sound and in studio with the knowledge of at home production. We talk about successfully switching genres as she originally started in country and the steps to take! We touch on how to incorporate that into your social media/website as well and how you should keep you look consistent and what she suggests you should do first when you are introducing yourself to the world with a new genre under your belt! have fun!! You're also hearing you song "Eighteen" in the podcast too and you can find all her music on every streaming platform and herself on Instagram @juliannalaine on Facebook at Julianna Laine and her graphic design work online at Not Your Designer! Obvi, every band and artist is different – from genres, styles, and everything in between – but they’ve all got one thing in common - they want to get recognized. Merchandise is a great, if not one of the better choices these days. It gives you the ability to take your visibility to the next level and raise some money at the same time. Your merch can be and will be a walking billboard for you or your band. The good news is, there are so many flexible options out there for you to choose from. We are going to talk through your roll as an artist when it comes to providing your fans with merchandise, the entrepreneurship and business brain you need to have behind it (as an artist) when it comes to your brand and your merchandise, how to find what’s right for you and your brand, we also have lots of merch ideas to share, we discuss budgeting it and ways to save money for ordering what you need and designing your merch, the best practices for selling it, and what kinds of items and designs your fans would love, how it creates an unification of your fans and how it creates and interaction with people to become bigger fans, both online and in-venue. Our guest industry expert this episode is musician Adam Chiasson who is also the owner and founder of Tree Picks, this great company out of Calgary that makes beautiful custom wooden guitar picks. You can find Tree Picks on Instagram, Facebook and online! Let's talk merch and business on this episode of Studio B - Gotta Make It For You, Gotta Make It For Me.

We are back to with freelance bass player, drummer and rhythm guitarist AND talent booker/booking agent Cody Mack! This is easily one of my fave episodes so far! It's a big one, there's a lot to cover and we may ruffle some feathers, but it's a real honest conversation! This episode is all about YOU booking YOUR own show as an independent or emerging artists! We confront the topic of why you may not be getting booked for shows are securing show spots and starting out, most artists/musicians don't have a booker/agent or anyone to really assist them when booking shows, where do you start? We tell you that! We discuss EPKs, how to approach venues to book a show and who's job it is to promote the show. We talk about what you should and have prepared before booking a show and how to prepare a show so it's successful!! I even became enlightened when we discussed a way of booking shows that some venues have done - I saw it as a huge negative, but Cody explains how it's a very great learning experience for green artists!

This is part 1 of a 2 part feature about booking shows as an independent or emerging artist with our professional Cody Mack!
He's a freelance drummer, bassist and rhythm guitarist, as well as a Booking Agent and Talent Buyer and sound guy for some events out of Edmonton.
We brought him in to talk about booking show this week.
Our best advice - be helpful, hungry and hands on!
Originally we were going to have just one episode about venue booking, but Cody and I get talking and you know... we had an amazing conversation about Booking and Talent Agents and what they are looking for when they are looking to hire new talent, what your roll is as an artist when it comes to show bookings and what the venue's job is too. We also talk about open mic nights and how you can use them to promote yourself in the best way! We also talk about what Cody's process is when he's booking artists for venues. Part 2 will focus on how you can book your own shows with success! Follow us at @__studio__b__ and follow Cody at @iamcodymack!
