Jonathan hurriedly walked towards the cupboard and ran his fingers across the chiselled carving of the wood. He opened one of its doors and it swung out easily indicating a well-oiled hinge. He tested the other door and it too opened and closed without a sound.
"Your habit of picking up trash is becoming a real problem, you know. Remember the sofa we picked up last year? Before we knew it, the entire house was infested with bed bugs."
Ryan said irritably.
The memory of the bug-infested sofa still haunts him as he remembers the sleepless nights scratching away at his skin and wondering where the bugs originated from. They had to call a pest control company to fumigate the entire house before narrowing it down to the sofa as the culprit.

As he was pacing back and forth underneath the shelter of the shophouse, a red car pulled up not far from where he was standing.

Adi signalled left and slowly pulled out from the main road. He glanced back and scoffed at the never-ending line of cars that had resigned to being trapped for the next eight hours at best on that stretch of road. He smiled, glad to be out of that traffic mess.
The road he got on to was dark except for the reflective stone markers that marked the edge of the roads. He knew it was an old road and although it would be a slightly longer route, at least it was free of traffic and he was free to floor the accelerator pedal as and when he pleased. In the distance, he could barely make out the tail lights of the yellow car in front of him and he sat back to enjoy his ride while his hands flipped through the radio channels until he reached the station to settle on.

The 2 boys scoffed. The science laboratory Wandi was talking about was at the far end of a corridor of laboratories on the first floor. It’s the only room with a skeleton.
No one hardly walks there when there were no lessons as it’s too quiet and out of the way.
Mdm Rita, the laboratory’s assistant had recently asked for her workstation to be transferred to the front of the corridor which is nearer to the staff room and had more foot traffic.

Afiq smiled to himself and turned back to the screen. The next scene was a bit disconcerting to him when after a character was brutally killed, the laughter from the actress playing the vampire rang around the hall.

Simon pushed the door and stepped into the cold walkway and clocked in his presence on a handheld device. The machine gave an audible ‘beep’ and he moved in, pulling his jacket close.
There was no one at the counter but he knew they were one or two people inside the staff room, quietly attending to routine matters.

A few steps away from the landing was the long corridor that will lead to his unit. There, in a straight row, were five figures in white, sitting on the parapet, all looking at him.

The sound of loud whisperings woke him suddenly.

The scent hit him first.
A nice fragrant floral scent. In a matter of seconds, it turned cloyingly sweet that it almost choked him. He kept his eyes on the road as his heart

As the clock above the counter ticked loudly above the silence of the Nurse's Station, Dewi, who was concentrating on a spreadsheet on the computer screen suddenly looked up and
realized that she was very much alone. Nurse Jenny and the medical

Dilla excused herself to go to the ladies at the end of the corridor just outside the cafe. The corridor was quiet and the entrance to the restroom was dimly lit.
Just after the entrance on her right, separated by a wall was a baby changing station. She hesitated at first, but then she overheard the sound of a woman changing her baby’s diaper and talking softly to the baby.
She immediately felt at ease and entered the restroom which consists of a row of 6 cubicles on one side and another row of 6 washbasins on the other.

Then, from out of the inky blackness, what looked like a ball popped out of the water.
Guided by the light of the full moon and the lamplight of the jetty, Raymond squinted to
get a good look.
As it came closer, Raymond gasp and let go of the rod in shock. The
ball was a head. Hair plastered to its grotesque face that twisted into a sneer as it

Sheila and Justin trudged up the hotel steps, dragging their luggage bags with them. The drive to the resort was a good two hours from the airport and both of them were exhausted.

There were two flights of stairs to this bridge. The first flight will end up on a middle platform and the second flight will be the final steps. It was in this middle platform when he glanced to his left and saw something that shook him out of his happy mood.
A figure in white sat squatting on a branch of a tree just beside this platform. Her long hair covered most of her face but he could make out the red eyes that looked directly at him. He stood rooted there as if unsure of what to do next.
A honk of a passing vehicle from the road shook him from his dazed state and he quickly ran down the last flight of steps. A taxi drove by at that moment and he managed to flag it down.

Paul shrugged and walked back inside, puzzled but did not dwell on it. He sat back on his chair and resumed his work. He felt comforted by the knowledge that Soo Lee was in the office with him so he did not feel alone.
As he was about to reach for the other packet of biscuits, he heard the glass door slide open again. He stood up and peered over his partition. There was no one coming in!
Paul’s heart skipped a beat and he glanced over at Soo Lee’s workstation. Her small light was still on and he could still hear her typing away. He walked quickly across the dark office towards her workstation and peeked over her partition.

Hairi fought back his yawn. He had dropped his last passenger half an hour ago and did not see anyone near the roadside in this part of the housing estate. It was past midnight on a weekday and the roads were quiet.

They have been playing with it almost every day. Fika and her twin sister Nina cannot seemed to get enough of playing with the congkak. Ever since their aunt brought back the wooden mahogany board with the elaborate design from her overseas trip, the girls have been attracted to the game as soon as they figure out how to play with it.
From the kitchen, Lina can hear the seven-year olds dropping marbles into the holes that will lead into their respective houses at the end of the board. Occasionally one of them would squeal with delight if she managed to gain more marbles. Sometimes there are arguments but they will make up immediately after and set off to play another round with the board.

Yūrei
Yūrei is a ghost in the Japanese folklore comparable to the Western model of ghosts. Like their Chinese and Western counterparts, they are thought to be spirits barred from a peaceful afterlife.
Ubume
This is the tragic ghost of a woman who has died during childbirth—with or without her baby. She returns to the living as she still cares about her children. She is usually depicted as a baby-carrying woman, who gives her baby to passersby and then disappears. Once the passerby gives a look at the baby, it turns out that it was merely a big rock or bundle of leaves. She is sometimes depicted as a dreadful woman in a blood-stained koshimaki (Japanese summer attire) carrying an underdeveloped fetus.
Onryo
This kind of Japanese ghost story also relates to vengeful spirits but unlike the goryo, which is not necessarily a wrathful spirit, the onryo is almost always a malicious ghost as they died full of anger, and only return to scare the living to death and take their souls. Victims of domestic abuse or women martyred by wicked stalkers or maniacs will most likely turn into onryo in the afterlife. This category also serves as a staple for J-horror movies and has appeared as the renowned Kayako from The Grudge or Sadako from The Ring.

The Pocong is the well-known ghost in the folklores known among the peoples from the malay archipelago. It is said to appear in the form of a body and a shrout it in white coffin cloth or "kain kafan".

Traditionally HGF falls on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar.
During this period, many Chinese worship their ancestors and make offerings to wandering souls that roam the earth. There is a slight difference in ideology of the way Taoist and Buddhist followers observe HGF.
Taoists focus on appeasing the wandering souls released from the netherworld, while the emphasis of the Buddhists is filial piety.

The figure acted as if she was not there. Mdm Salina remained perfectly still as she was too terrified to move.
Mdm Salina closed her eyes, muttering some prayers. She could hear indecipherable sounds around her bedroom. She wanted to nudge Mr Hassan awake but was unable to move. After a while the sound stopped and Mdm Salina was able to move again. Slowly, she opened her eyes and the figure was gone…. leaving behind a stench throughout the bedroom. Mdm Salina was traumatized and throughout the night was unable to go to sleep.

Hantu galah (“tall ghost”) is a well-known ghost known among the people of South East Asia. ‘Galah’ is Malay word which translates to pole. As you can guess from the name, hantu galah is described as taking the corrupted form of a human… but as you walk closer and closer to it, the hantu galah appears to grow taller and taller until you can only see its legs.
If anyone dares to look up to try to see the face of the hantu galah, it is said that your neck will remain stuck and you head will remain in that position permanently. This ghost will only attack if you try to walk in between its legs.

The Punggol Matilda House has been standing alone in the wilderness of old Punggol for more than a hundred years. It was built in 1902 by Irish lawyer Joseph William Cashin (1844-1907) for his wife. The wealthy Cashin family regarded the Matilda House, also known as Istana Menanti (“Waiting Palace” in Malay) or the Punggol Kampong House, as a weekend resort.
At one point during the 80s, there was a widespread fear about a new kind of ghost. The ghost was called ‘Hantu Kum Kum’
A Toyol or Tuyul is the twisted spirit of a small child who passed away before being born. Throug ritualistic practices and black magic, a witch doctor can invoke the spirit and bind it to an owner. A Toyol is used to run errands, create mischief, steal riches and (rarely) murder.
