Microbiologists, nutritionists and animal scientists come together to study how microorganisms in the digestive system affect human health. UNL food scientists Andy Benson and Jens Walter say the goal is to unlock the mysteries of the gastrointestinal tract and transform that understanding into practices and products, such as designer foods that could help address obesity and disease.
By measuring the moisture leaving a field of crops, UNL Biological Systems Engineering Professor Suat Irmak provides farmers with valuable research-based information. Farmers conserve energy and water, save money, and ultimately grow better crops.
Maher Tadros, a UNL professor of civil engineering, is transforming bridges and other structures with inventions that expand the strength, versatility and utility of concrete. One example is the NUTie, used to create strong, thin, energy-efficient walls. UNL worked with a Nebraska manufacturer and now the NUTie is commercially available and is being used in building construction world-wide.
Katie Thomas immersed herself in Chinese culture with a summer study abroad trip through UNL's College of Business Administration. She visited Shanghai and Beijing, hiked the great wall and interned for an international company. Thomas says her new global view will help as she puts the finishing touches on her business plan for an event planning company she hopes to open after graduation.
Carlos Asarta grew up in Spain and France and came to Nebraska to be part of the Cornhusker Swimming Team. He excelled in the water and in the classroom, eventually earning his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from UNL. Now he's on the faculty of the College of Business Administration and has won numerous honors for his teaching. With a Midwestern wife and three Nebraska-born kids, Asarta says Nebraska is home.
Harley Jane Kozak grew up on a farm east of Lincoln and studied theater at UNL for three semesters before heading to New York City. She starred in a dozen feature films including Parenthood, Arachnophobia and When Harry Met Sally. Kozak also spent five years on television playing characters on Texas, The Guiding Light and Santa Barbara. More recently, she’s published four murder mystery novels.

Jonis Agee has authored more than a dozen books and inspires students every day as a UNL professor of English. She’s spearheaded writers workshops and writes everyday, but most loves teaching. “I was just born to do that job,” she said.

Football fans may not know his face, but they’ll recognize the booming voice of Patrick Combs, ’88, who calls the plays in Memorial Stadium as the Voice of the Huskers. He has a busy life: learned the trade calling horse shows, ran for Congress, rides a Harley, and is currently a radio network executive.

Sharon Hansen, ’78, has led choirs in Germany, Romania and Carnegie Hall. Her academic career started as an elementary music teacher in Millard, Nebraska and she now is Director of Choral Activities at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Peggy Gomez, ’85, has a long association with University of Nebraska as a student, patron of the arts and visiting professor. Through her arts supply store and community exhibit space, Tugboat Gallery, Gomez has led and influenced Lincoln’s downtown art scene.

A Nebraska business degree and UNL's Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps helped Robin Watters, ‘ 77, serve his country with a distinguished leadership career. Now a Rear Admiral, Watters helps lead the Navy as Reserve Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, U.S. Pacific Fleet. He has led naval forces in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Since earning his Master of Fine Arts degree, John Stark, ’82, has made a career of scenic design for the theater. He’s worked professionally at several Chicago area theaters and been honored for his designs. Today, he’s active as a designer and professor at Illinois State University. Jay Keasling, '86, runs a lab that is creating a cure for malaria. Newsweek called him a "Person to Watch" in 2009. Stephen Colbert called him a "mad scientist" on his show in March 2009.
Betsy O'Brien, '67, was the longtime director of the Coal, Nuclear and Renewable Fuels Division at the U.S. Department of Energy Information Administration.
