All Blaze No Glory: The Podcast: Recent Episodes

Richard Gray

I am a sports daft individual that enjoys everything from rugby to American football to ice hockey to football and beyond. The term All Blaze No Glory, to me, is the exact description of being a Scottish sports fan and it helps that the pod mascot is the very handsome Blaze the collie.

In this pod I hope to bring you my opinion on various sports stories, reviews of matches and venues, as well as promoting some of the lesser known sports going. I hope you enjoy listening and will interact on our twitter, instagram and Facebook.

As promised I followed up the episode with Saara Lahti by speaking to Ella Grad-Arndt who played her ringette in Canada. Ella talks about her experiences and goes a bit more in depth about the skills needed to be effective. She also compares ringette trousers to hockey shorts (though she calls everything pants). Hope you enjoy this one.

On this pod it was a pleasure to welcome on AP Cronje (@rugby_ap) to talk about South Africa heading into the World Cup. We broke down the positions, talk about what scared him about Scotland and even touched on Wales. All in all a very in depth analysis of Scotland's world cup opponents. I hope the listen is as enjoyable to you as it was recording it.

This idea came to me on the day I was recording. I ended up talking to myself for way longer than expected and to be fair might be more negative than I wanted to be.

I hope you enjoy the takes and feel free to interact and let me have it if you think I am wrong.

Trigger warning: Glasgow warrior fans beware.

When I introduced the podcast I said I wanted to cover multiple sports, including those that are more obscure. One of the sports I had in mind was Ringette. An ice sport, played with a ring instead of a puck originating from Canada. I am lucky enough to have two people to talk to about this sport, with part 1 featuring Finland's Saara Lahti. Full disclosure, there were some gremlins in the internet on the day of recording, so the pod has a few cuts that might not flow, but all in all it was great to char to Saara about ringette.

It was a pleasure to welcome Scotland Women's cap number 16, Donna Aitken, to the pod. Donna and I looked back at the Men's six nations and then went on to chat about her first cap for Scotland, the inaugural Women's World Cup (or world championship) and we look ahead at the upcoming TikTok Six Nations. Donna also reveals her rugby crush and how she found rugby.

So find out what is was like for a 17 year old prop making their debut in an episode that I am very proud of and I hope you enjoy it.

It was a privilege to talk to Michael Mawdsley and Rodger Hill, about Rodger's son David who was sadly taken too soon due to undiagnosed heart conditions. He died suddenly, without warning, whilst playing rugby for the Scottish Parliamentary Team against the Irish Dail and Senead XV team, on a sunny day in Dublin on 19th March 2022, at the age of just 30.

His life-long passion was rugby. Murrayfield was his spiritual home and he revelled in both the highs and lows supporting the Scottish Rugby Team.

To honour David's life the annual fixture as part of the Parliamentary Six Nations against the Irish will become the David Hill Memorial Quaich, a trophy which has been very kindly donated by David's family. The first fixture of the Quaich will take place on the 11 March 2023 and is due to take place at Peffermill, on the all-weather pitch.

Listen in to the pod to find out more about David, the team and the game from those who know best.

Had an absolute blast recording this with John Anderson from the Scottish Rugby Podcast. We talked rugby, rugby jerseys, Flinty McStag and much more. We also chatted about who be surprise factors and non factors for Scotland and the pro sides. The original plan was for this to last 30-40 minutes, but once we got going it just flowed. Hope you enjoying listening, as much as I enjoyed recording it.

On this episode I chatted to Stuart McLellan who runs Doon the Park on twitter and Facebook. Stuart covers amateur football (soccer to our North American friends) in the Lothian and Fife area. The effort he puts in is incredible and he is a clearly passionate guy. We chatted about what got him started in football, his previous life as a lawnmower and more. This is the first episode where I have essentially reached out to somebody for content since starting the full pod and I really enjoyed. Massive thanks to Stuart.

If you love football then this is well worth a listen.
