On an April night in 1775 hundreds of British troops were been rallied for the express purpose of bringing to justice a pair of revolutionaries that had set the entire city of Boston on fire - Samuel Adams and John Hancock.
These men were the architects of an almost three year long crisis that had driven the citizens of Boston into outright rebellion against their colonial masters, leading the charge in what would soon become the American Revolution.
In our episode this week we’ll honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party which just passed on December 16th, by looking at the story of how the spark of rebellion began in Boston and how the secret work of Adams, Hancock, and the Sons of Liberty culminated in a moment where the destruction of a common man’s beverage became a symbol of outright rebellion against the most powerful Empire on earth.

This week we’ll complete the trajectory of Napoleon’s rise to power, focusing not as much on his military might but instead on his political savvy that culminated in his personal rubicon moment, where he took on the Revolutionary Government itself in a coup attempt that came within a hair's width of complete failure.
All the while, as the intentions of the young General from Corsica became increasingly clear, a choice faced the leaders of the French Republic was this - when you have to stop a man with seemingly limitless ambition and all the support of the mob on his side, is there any price that is not worth paying, even if the cost is paid in blood?

In the 19th century there was one man who disrupted the political order of Europe in a way that nobody had since the days of Julius Caesar - Napoleon Bonaparte. The French General turned self declared Emperor emerged at a time when the once promising French revolution had fallen into chaos and bloodshed. But Napoleon took the seeds of the revolution and transformed them into a new political order that turned Europe on its head. In the process Napoleon would find himself battling the kings and rulers of the old system in not just one, but seven different wars designed to reign in his influence on the continent.
Over the next few weeks we are also going to look at Napoleon Bonaparte from a few different viewpoints - as a general, a politician, and finally as a simple human being whose personal life and emotions sometimes won out over his greater abilities. All of these complexities together are needed to get the picture of the man who set the world of Europe on fire, and also might have saved it at the same time.

In 1952 in the city of Springfield, Illinois a young college student made a discovery of something that was not supposed to exist. He uncovered the only photo of Abraham Lincoln in his coffin, which was supposed to have been destroyed decades before.
In this week's episode we will look at the dramatic history behind the photo, the story of Abraham Lincoln’s Funeral Train which took the fascinating 1,6000 mile long trip carrying Lincoln’s body from Washington D.C. to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.
Over these many mile which made up the last days of Lincoln’s public life, the deceased President would pull off one final political miracle, turning his death into a collective cry for reconciliation across the entire nation.

Happy Halloween. Our story this week centers around the question of how one ends a Witch Hunt.
In the case of the Salem Witch Trials, the cost of ending the hysteria would come through simple tactics by a few courageous men. It would cost these men dearly, but it ultimately revealed the true hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials and it would be made clear for all the members of the Massachusetts Colony to see.

In the second part of our series on Amelia Earhart's life, legacy, and mysterious disappearance we are going to look at the final years of her famed career as an aviator. As she mastered the craft of long distance flying she smashed records and broke barriers at every turn.
But every achievement pushed her forward to that final great adventure which she would never return home from, her attempt to become the first woman to fly around the world. In this episode we’ll tackle the mysterious question of what happened to Earhart on her final flight over the Pacific.

This is the second episode of a two part seires on the end of the Viking Age. In this story we dive head first into the conflict between two rulers, Sweyn Forkbeard of the Danes and the Saxon King Ethelred as they battle for control of England.
While one of these leaders is remembered by history as a feirce warrior ahd shrewed poltical actor, the other is considered an abject failure. But great men are not the only ones who turn the gears of history. In this case, the failures of Ethelred managed to become at least partially responsible for one of the ideas we hold most sacred in our world today.

Our story this week is going to center around the wild Sack of Panama that marked the high point of Henry Morgan’s career on the seas but also proved too great of an attack for even the British Crown to fully stand behind and justify. With this historic raid, which might have been the greatest ever undertaken by a Privateer or Pirate in the entire Golden age of Sail, Henry Morgan was going to push his own luck too far.
As a result he would unintentionally change the public’s view of Privateers forever and bring the practice from its comfortable palace in the legal gray zone into a new territory of undisputed and outright criminal activity. In this process he would set the stage for an evolution in the status of Caribbean sea raiders and lay the groundwork for the emergence of the next generation of Pirates as the Enemies of All Mankind that we know best.

A whole group of abolitionists would stare down imprisonment for charges stemming from the day they pulled Jane Johnson from bondage on the Phildelphia dock. Johnson herself would return to the public spotlight in an amazing display of courage and nobility.
In this episode, we will complete the story of two separate legal battles that happened nearly simultaneously. As Passmore Williamson and William Still both fought for justice in different cases related to the rescue of Jane Johnson, their story of sacrifice and courage lit a fire in the hearts of many Northerners and grew the abolitionist cause in a way nobody could have predicted.

This week we tackle a more poignant topic, sharing the amazing story of an escaped enslaved woman named Jane Johnson and the man who risked everything to help her achieve her freedom, one of America’s greatest abolitionists, William Still.
The coming months of drama, which would be called “The Jane Johnson Affair” would become an incident that would exemplify the most heroic qualities of the abolition movement directly alongside the cruelty of those defending slavery. And, in the process, the whole country would entrench itself further one one side of the slavery issue or the other, creating an intractable conflict that would only be solved through the brutal and bloody Civil War.

We will look at how the commissioner of baseball came to the decision to punish the players in the harshest way possible, and where it left these eight men after the dust settled.
For the eight members of the Chicago Black Sox, the revelation of the truth would lead them into a lifelong fight not to save their careers or salaries, but instead simply to try and salvage their legacies. And no player would struggle more to try and redeem his name on the pages of history than Shoeless Joe Jackson.

In this second episode of our Big Fix series we are going to pick up where we left off which is right at the beginning of game one, and cover the rest of the events of the 1919 World Series. We’ll follow the specific way the tainted games played out and how some of the players involved developed second thoughts about the whole fix just a little too late.

Originally we had planned to release this much closer to actual Valentine's Day, but in this episode we are going to focus on how Al Capone rose to power during a period of intense gang violence in the 1920’s known as the Chicago Beer Wars.
Capone displayed some of his most ruthless tendencies during this time in order to win the war, and it all culminated in the infamous valentine's day massacre. Through this story we’ll try to understand a bit about the contradictions inside Capone’s life and how one many could be capable of such radical acts of both murder and mercy.

This week we are going to take a short break in our series on the Barrow Gang and the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde in order to tell a quick story inspired by recent headlines.
This month, Chinese Spy Balloons were spotted flying over the mainland United States when word came out that the North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD was tracking a strange object traveling over the continental United States.
The object seemed to be some sort of balloon, and its flight had been tracked all the way from mainland China. A few days later, a 2nd Balloon was spotted over US territory, this time on the East coast.
The balloons were shot down over the Atlantic Ocean by US Fighter Jets.
It caused us to think about another one of my favorite historical stories, the other time when the US came under attack from enemy balloons.

When we left our story last week the young outlaws had been separated by iron bars once again. This time though it was Bonnie who had been arrested. After Cylde’s plan to stage a breakout of the Eastham Prison had gone disastrously wrong, the couple had ended up cornered in a Texas riverbank, hunted down by a posse of locals looking for justice against the thieves. Clyde had then made a fateful choice to abandon Bonnie to the authorities and make his own escape.
We pick back up with her waiting in a cell in Kaufman, Texas and hoping that Cylde would come through on his promise to rescue her from the unknown fate that lay ahead.

But how does a young couple, both barely out of their teenage years, rise to such a level of national infamy - I mean still to this day they are glamorized in movies, shows, pop culture almost 100 years later? And why exactly was their spree of robbery and murder something that so many in the depression south latched onto and identified with so strongly?

When we left the series last week, we’d almost reached the end of the road for John Wilkes Booth and David Harold. After 10 days on the run the net had started to tighten around them, and the pair were rapidly moving closer to the infamous Garrett farm, where the final confrontation between the killers and the manhunters would take place.
In this episode we will play out Booth’s final days on the run before talking about the trials for the other conspirators and finally end with the nation’s collective mourning for the fallen president.

When we left our series last week in Part 3, two members of John Wilkes Booth’s gang had not managed to make it out of the city following their own failed assassination attempts on the Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. Meanwhile the city of Washington had fallen into chaos as public celebrations for the end of the war had turned into angry mobs.
But Booth himself, along with his guide David Harold, has slipped through the grip of the pursuing crowds and disappeared into the Maryland night. After briefly stopping in Surrattsville, the pair had traveled through the night until they arrived at the doorstep of Dr. Samuel Mudd. This is the place where we will pick back up this week for our second to last episode in this series - with the fugitives walking on the morning of April 15th still free men.

When we last left the story we had skipped back in time to meet John Wilkes Booth’s co-conspirators - Lewis Powell (who changed his name to Lewis Payne), David Harold, George Azerodt, and John Surratt. These men had each found their way into Booth’s plans years earlier, and they had stuck with him through multiple failed attempts to kidnap the president.
We will now jump back into that bloody night of April 14th and follow the fate of these would-be killer's and their targets (which included other members of Lincoln's cabinet) as the rest of the events of the night played out with dramatic results.

After Lincoln passed away, the country reacted with a combination of shock and grief that exploded into a furious public search to find his killer. That manhunt is going to be the focus of our final episode in the series, but this week let's move back in time a bit.
We are going to introduce you to the group of co-conspirators who surrounded John Wilkes Booth. Along with Booth himself, we explore their individual histories, plotting prior to the assassination attempts, and show how Booth changed from a failed kidnapper to his final role as the assassin who would take down the president.

In our last episode (Part 1) we told a bit of the history of American moonshine, the drink that was known as “White Lightning” was a staple for survival on the American Frontier dating all the way back to the Revolution.
After prohibition gave the whole country a taste for the liquor, a new and dangerous profession emerged as drivers were called on to transport the valuable drink from the backwoods to the cities. Young men of the south mastered driving cars filled with moonshine, all while outrunning federal agents trying to bring down their operation.

In June of 1962 - three bank robbers escaped in the middle of the night from America's most notorious prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. They were never seen again.
