In this episode I share about one of my great losses, the loss of my first born preemie son.  Sometimes we need to allow ourselves to grieve and not push toward where we "should" be.  This is where I've found myself in the last week and tonight I've chosen to open up about something weighing on my heart.

I have learned and grown as a person because of what I have experienced, but I also still have PTSD and probably always will.  It's how your brain has been trained to respond and as someone with PTSD, our natural instinct is often to expect the worst case scenario.  It's not pessimism, it's a trauma response.  In being transparent, I share an example of how PTSD has affected me this week and how I am using coping skills to make choices that promote healing.

This solo episode discusses what PTSD really is, common symptoms and some of my own personal experience.  The definition of PTSD and general description along with symptoms is based around Lisa Najavitz descriptions in her book Seeking Saftey mixed in with my own experience.  The purpose of this discussion is to help those with PTSD recognize the symptoms that are so very common to others who are also experiencing PTSD so we understand the process better as well as to help others understand and better to relate to us.  If you're experiencing PTSD, it is extremely beneficial to see a counselor or join a support group of others who can work through this with you.

It's the end of the year as we know it!  Today is the last day of 2022!  What a beautiful opportunity to start fresh in the new year, a clean slate, a blank canvas.  Let's talk about why New Year's Resolutions typically don't last and how we can create goals instead that will push us forward and help us live the life we want.

In this episode we hear the story of a friend who has experienced a lot of trauma in life beginning as a young child.  One thing that really sticks out to me as so important is for us to make sure our children are safe with us and that we don't put them in compromising situations.  If someone tells you about their trauma, they need to hear the words, "I believe you."

Merry Christmas!  I hope you're having a GREAT holiday weekend with family or friends, but most of us know there may be situations that come up that require some help.

You can't follow a safety plan you didn't write.  A safety plan is how we can think through and plan for potential red flag or yellow flag situations.  If we plan ahead and we know what we will do in case of bad situations or conflict, then we are already half way through it!  It is far better to have a safety plan you didn't need than to need one you don't have.

I have uploaded a template in the Hope Bound Facebook Group that you may find helpful, it's pinned to the top and will be under "files."  Check out the template and if it doesn't work for you, try to write out your own style.  Ask someone to be part of your safety plan and let them know ahead of time how they can help you.

Wow!  Who knew so much could come out of my son losing his first tooth!  My son is almost 6 and we had a conversation right after he lost his tooth that I had to share with you.  It struck me as so important to share with you a parallel between how my son viewed his tooth and how we view ourselves sometimes.  I am blown away at the lesson that was in it for me today.

Some mini episodes will be prayers.  I understand not all of my listeners will want to listen to prayers and that is okay, I will always include the word Prayer in the title if that is what it is so you can make that decision.  My hope is that this prayer may give words to the feelings some of us are having on our difficult days and to remind us that God is near.

Overwhelm hits the hardest during the holidays.  When we are experiencing the big emotions surrounding grief, loss or anxiety it can paralyze us and make the next steps seem so illusive.  Past memories can make it harder to stay in the moment, to find the joy of the holidays.  If we cherish our old memories, we can let them inspire our future and our present.  Choose to step off the path of mediocrity and live as who you were created to be.
