Today’s episode is from a special lecture given in Wilson Hall by Gary Haugen on March 14th, 2024. Haugen’s lecture is entitled, The Struggle for Justice and the Recovery of Moral Knowledge.Gary Haugen's International Justice Mission has partnered with local teams since 1997 to protect over 10 million vulnerable people worldwide from violence, trafficking, and slavery. In this lecture he asked: what gave his global partners the capacity to persevere in prolonged struggles for justice? How are such people formed? And can a contemporary university like UVA form students who will struggle for justice in the world? If a university aspires to form men and women to be great and good, Haugen contended, it must recover the pursuit of moral knowledge.

God's call to the exiles in Babylon to "seek the peace and prosperity of the city" (Jer 29:7) is highly relevant to Christ-followers today. There's increasing conversation around this, but how do congregations actually live into this mandate? Thankfully, there is wisdom from church history as well as contemporary examples of pioneering churches that shed light on what it looks like to advance flourishing in the multiple dimensions of community life.

It is a truism that power corrupts. We see new examples, in the media and our own experience, every day—including, if we are honest, in our own choices and inner life.

This lecture offers another way of approaching the topic of power, rooted in creation rather than coercion. Power is never easy or safe. But it does not have to corrupt when it bears the image of God.

It is easy for Christians to wonder about the value of what they do. Sometimes we are tempted to see our work as insignificant or secondary to our "true" calling. At other times we are tempted to place too much meaning in our job, expecting to find all of our fulfillment there.

This seminar will seek to address this question, beginning with God's purposes in creation for human doing, continuing with the corruption of human doing in the fall (and in Israel's experience under the law), and concluding with the fulfillment of human doing in Christ and his church.
