CreatiVets’ goal is to offer opportunities for relief and healing for the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. Our purpose is to use various forms of art, including songwriting, visual arts, music, and creative writing, to help disabled veterans cope with service-related trauma (i.e., post-traumatic stress, or PTS) by fostering self-expression in a way that allows them to transform their stories of trauma and struggle into an art form that can inspire and motivate continued healing. Through compassion, we are helping veterans live again.

My name is Jennifer Souza, but you can call me Jen. I am the creator of the original military uniform ornament ball.
My soldier and I’s first duty station was at Fort Drum, NY. “Climb to Glory!” While at Ft. Drum, I worked at the base alterations shop, where I was inspired to re-purpose old Army Uniforms uniquely.
When the Army expired ACUs in 2014, I didn’t want to give my husband’s uniforms to secondhand stores or throw them away, so I created the military uniform ornament ball. After a year of private sales, the ornaments became my full-time focus, and I opened a shop.
After 22 years of service, it was time for Sergeant First Class Souza to retire! This remarkable man was a soldier his entire adult life, and we were excited to start a new chapter, bringing us back to our home state of Maine with my two daughters.
Mr. Souza is now a welder, and I continue to create and provide exceptional customer service at Freedom Balls.

As a retired army veteran, I definitely remember how hard basic training was and without the luxury of listening to the radio, only when we ate at the Mess Hall. AIT, I knew no one, just me and my Walkman, playing nothing but Lisa Lisa, Starpoint, Midnight Star, etc. But those were my chance to escape and relax to some good tunes. When I play those old songs today, it puts me back to that moment when I was far from home but the relaxing songs made a difference.
