Vinnie is a rising star in the Dallas-Fort Worth comedy scene, His journey into comedy began unexpectedly, with an improv class he received as a birthday gift. What started as a fun experience quickly turned into a passion, leading him to try stand-up on a whim at an open mic. That one open mic launched his career as a stand-up comedian. Since then, Vinnie has become a fixture in the local comedy circuit.but By day, he’s a dedicated kindergarten teacher, bringing humor and energy to his students, and by night he is taking the DFW comedy world by storm. He also hosts the very successful Cowabunga Comedy Show every Wednesday at The Gilmore Pub in Plano. This week my guest is Steven Holt. Steven Holt is truly Dallas Famous. He has been fronting bands in Dallas for decades. His first band Tablet had great success locally and opened for some huge bands. Since then he has kept his song-writing going in different projects and now has put together “I Love You and is putting out songs and playing shows again.” I had never met Steven and I really liked the different directions this conversation went. Also I am now a huge Steven Holt Fan and after this you might be too.

This week we have Mavel Traylor aka Mavel the Creator. Mavel is the pre-to the post in all things production in DFW.. Hair, make-up, wardrobe, and any stage hand job that comes her way. Mavel is someone most people wouldn’t know but the shows they love would not happen without her. She works with the Dallas Opera, Broadway Dallas, basically anywhere a big show in Dallas happens. She's worked with artists from Nikki Minaj to Beyonce, to Dolly Parton and was the first black female make-artist for Channel 5 Dallas. Mavel owns the hair salon Eccentric Elegance Studio and is a certified instructor as well. Mavel is one of the blue-collar artists that doesn’t always get the credit she deserves as a concert, play or live production would not look nearly as good without people like Mavel. This was a blast and I know you’ll enjoy this one.

This week we have drummer phenom Mike Mitchell aka Blaque Dynamite. We take a deep, non-sequential dive into his history. Mitchell was a child prodigy that started performing at age 2 and recorded on his first album and wrote his first song at age 7. A Booker T and Herbie Hancock Institute grad, Mitchell has performed with legends Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea as well as playing regularly with Stanly Clark, Thundercat, Erykah Badu, Willow and Shawn Martin to name a few.
Mitchell also fronts his own band and we get into his philosophy on that and how he decides on taking gigs, as well as some great insight on the Dallas music scene.

Sean is the singer of the fantastic band Cut Throat Finches, He also proudly wears the un-official title of “Mr. Fort Worth.” Sean got his start as a singer songwriter in Deep Ellum but slowly felt the pull of Fort Worth and its more intimate music scene, and his wife. We follow his history and how he ended up forming Cut Throat Finches. We then talk about Seans passion of getting City and State funding to support musicians. Sean also gives us some things people can do to support local musicians and art. This is an important conversation about the future of the music scene in Fort Worth and everywhere. This week we have Chris Penn. Chris is co-owner of Good records as well as co manager of the Polyphonic Spree as well as Tripping Daisy. Growing up in San Antonio, Chris was getting dragged to concerts by his parents planting the seeds for his future endeavors. Chris made his way to Dallas with the promise of working with Tripping Daisy. That couldn’t have gone any better as Chris still works closely with Tim Delaughter and the Good Records Umbrella. Chris has always been a big music fan and provided a stage at the record store for many up and coming bands and continues to do so. I really loved this chat as Chris really lets the stories fly. This week we have Roland Rangel. Roland is the director of marketing for the Deep Ellum Community Arts Fair April 5-7, but his Dallas history starts way before that. Roland was a member of the bands Chorus Affliction and The Salvation but switched his focus to video and social media. Rangel ran a successful political campaign for a Plano Councilman then ran for congress himself. Roland is back for his second year helping with the Festival and we talk about that and how the community really came out to support this now local event. I hope you enjoy my chat with Roland Rangel.

This week we have Claire Daigle. Claire is the director of education at The Dallas Comedy Club. After her first love and ambition of being a dancer was derailed by injury, Claire discovered she had an affinity for behind the scenes. Covid motivated Claire to take a stab at stand-up and she took a class at the Dallas Comedy Club. That led to her taking a huge roll at the theater. Her ultimate goal is to make Dallas the Southern destination for stand up comedy training. Her love for this scene is palpable and I am very glad to have her on to introduce much of this audience to comedy in Dallas.

This week we have singer Richard Haskins. Haskins grew up in Sherman and his Texas roots run as deep musical ones. You may have heard of his Denton based band punk The Wee Beasties, and if you have, you’ve probably seen him naked. Haskins can be a polarizing figure but in this conversation he is extremely candid about his health and being sober along with his music. We also dig into how his attempted bank robbery led to a singular bonding night with his father, and then jail.

This week or guest is trumpet player Thaddeus Ford. Thaddeus, originally from New Orleans, is a sixth generation jazz musician.- Well, he started as a jazz player but he has expanded and evolved way past that limited description. We walk through Ford’s history and how he brought a piece of Nola music traditions to Dallas. After surviving a heart attack at 35, Thaddeus’s life and career was given a fresh start and a chance truly be authentic as a musician. Now Ford refers to his style as GUMBO, mixing many genres but still honoring them all. Ford has played with Kirk Franklin and the Polyphonic Spree and is a teaching artist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Young Musicians Program since it’s inception. This weeks guest is Jaret Ray Reddick. Jaret almost doesn’t need an introduction as the front man of legendary pop punk group Bowling for Soup, but with Reddick that’s just the tip of the creative iceberg. Bowling for Soup was nominagted for a Grammy for their theme song on Phineas and Ferb and Reddick aslo voices the lead singer of Love Handel. Reddick has been the voice of of Chuck E Cheese since 2012. Jaret also started his own solo country band. The LaRue’s are the owners of Deep Ellum Art co, a Dallas venue that has become home to jam bands, EDM, and Snarky Puppy even recoreded their latest album there. We take a very casual dive into the start of their relationship and how live music and festivals were always part of it. Deep Ellum Art Co also features an active Art wall featuring some of Dallas’s best and up and coming artists. Art co has a special place in my heart as its where i really cut my teeth as a photographer, and Im not the only artists who the LaRue’s have given an opportunities. She also took part in community theater as a kid and was accepted into the second ever class at Booker T Washington High School. We follow Liz’s journey on from community theater to becoming an Equity member all the way to Broadway. We also talk about her memorable roles as Corrina Williams on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and Gertude Sanders in the film GET ON UP. Liz has hosted the open mic at the Balcony club every Monday for 10 years and its still going strong. Liz Mikel has an undeniable presence both in her perfomances as well as in life. Ultimatley, she is a story-teller but she became a true-trailblazer just by following her muse.

She also is a longtime member of the Kirtland record label, consultant for State Fair Records, and is on the advisory board for Booker T Washington High School for the performing arts. This week on the Dallas Famous podcast I’m trying something different. I recently wrote my first non-concert review article for the Dallas Observer on the state of Jam Bands in Dallas. First off I was blown away by the support over this article When I take a photo I can tell if it’s good, with my writing, not so much-so thanks for all the love! Being my first article, I got very excited and did 5 interviews. After I had them all, I realized I maybe had the content for 2 or 3 articles and had to leave most of the interviews out. guess this is how it’s normally done. Then I remembered, I have a podcast! So todays episode is a semi-cohesive - deeper dive into the Dallas jam band scene. I hope it doesn’t get too confusing, but we have Kenny Withrow, guitarist for the New Bohemians among many other musical projects., John Larue, owner of Deep Ellum Art co, Micheal Kervin, talent buyer and promoter and owner of Time2 fly music. The guys who got left out of the article? Chad Cocuzza, drummer for Spoonfed Tribe and a frequent member of Andy Franco and the UN. This week on the Dallas Famous Podcast is Diana Cox. Diana may have grown up in the mid-cities but she's all Dallas now. She started escaping to the Dallas music scene when she was 17. She went from playing in the punk band SAWED OFF STICK and skating roller derby int the Dallas Derby Devil League, to joining the Texas National Guard, then back to the music scene. Diana has been the Director of Operations at Kessler Presents for 10 yers and is one of the main people behind the re-opeing of the historic Longhorn Ballroom. She still plays in a band with her husband called STATION WAGON, and even co-hosts her own podcast called The Devils Trap Podcast. I hope you enjoy the episode!

William Flint is an artist and editorial cartoonist in DFW. Willam aka "Bubba" tells us about how he took his natural talent and turned his cartoon flare into a career. He has a vast clientele from local publications including the Dallas Morning news, Whiterock Lake Weekly and the Katy Trail Weekly to The Dallas Cowboys to the Old 97s and everything Dallas in between. James Villa is a Dallas based concert photographer. He has been a long time fixture in Deep Ellum and as of late is gm and house photographer for the legendary venue Trees. His online publication On Tour Monthly has been going strong for over 20 years and has take James all over the world to shoot shows. Our first episode welcomes Corey Howe. I first met Corey on the CHEVY MUSIC SHOWCASE when he was the front man for Deep Ellum band DEAD FLOWERS. He is also has been a fixture at local Deep Ellum establishments helping manage and save fledgling businesses. He now is co-owner of CHARLIE's STAR LOUNGE-one of the hippest dive bars in Dallas.
