Welcome to Professional Profiles, a podcast where I interview industry experts to understand their jobs, learn about their journeys to success, and uncover the strategies they’ve used to find it. Ask a 5-year-old, ‘what do you want to do when you grow up?’ and they will respond with a concrete answer, maybe even two or three. But ask that same question to a young adult, and odds are they will be stumped. It is getting progressively harder for teens to uncover what they truly are passionate about, and what they can pursue as a career. The goal of my podcast is to help young adults, like me, learn about various careers through the perspective of the people actually engaging in them: The professionals. Welcome to Professional Profiles.

Welcome back to the Wisdom Wrap-up series where we delve into the valuable insights shared by industry titans, visionary leaders, and trailblazers who have paved the way to success. Today I am giving you the 3 biggest takeaways from my interview with Marshall Davis Jones. Here are the 3 takeaways we cover:
1) Listening: A Skill, Not Silence
Marshall's journey as a speaker led him to a pivotal realization: sometimes, the most profound response is not words, but attentive listening. He recounted an experience where he was summoned to address a school grappling with the tragic issue of youth suicide. Just days prior to his arrival, another heart-wrenching incident had occurred. It was in the solemn aftermath of these events that Marshall recognized the transformative power of active listening. In a world often consumed by chatter, he highlighted that lending an ear can be the most compassionate and impactful gesture one can offer.
2) The Art of Tone
As Marshall and I conversed, he underscored a truth often overlooked – it's not just what we say, but how we say it, that truly matters. Our tone acts as an unseen messenger, conveying emotions and intentions that words alone might fail to capture. Marshall's anecdotes and insights drove home the point that the inflections, cadence, and nuances in our speech carry the potential to shape perceptions and forge genuine connections.
3) Mastering the Ultimate Cheat Code: Storytelling
Marshall transported me to a time of old Irish tradition, where traveling storytellers held a unique sway over their audiences. These wandering wordsmiths would knock on doors, trading enchanting tales for a night's shelter. "If I tell you a great story, will you let me stay the night?" This runs parallel to the great muses of Ancient Greece, who commanded attention and admiration for their ability to weave narratives that captivated hearts and minds. His message was clear: if we aspire to have our words resonate, we must learn to wield the magic of storytelling. Crafting a narrative transforms mere words into an irresistible force, drawing people in, creating deeper connections, and fostering a sense of shared understanding.

Welcome back to the Wisdom Wrap-up series where we delve into the valuable insights shared by industry titans, visionary leaders, and trailblazers who have paved the way to success. Today I am giving you the five biggest takeaways from my interview with Scott De Long. Here are the 5 takeaways we cover:
WE are Smarter than ME | No matter how smart you think you are, WE are SMARTER than me. Effective leaders foster a culture of collaboration, where everyone feels they have been heard. In Person > Virtual | Tech is cool, but but don't ever neglect the power of relationships. Good ole' fashioned networking is king...There's just something about face-to-face interactions that builds trust and allows for better communication. Redefine "Failure" | "It's only a failure if you did not learn something." Shifting our view of failure away from it being all bad, emboldens us and pushes us to be better in any endeavor. Don't be a "Command & Control" Leader | This style of leadership is more efficient and easy in the short term, but only in the short term. Long lasting organizations have a leader who fosters a culture where everyone is united under the same values. Rewarding the Good > Punishing the Bad | Positive reinforcement rather than negative condemnation will always be the move. Children, employees, employers, students, parents, and teammates (the list goes on and on) will always respond better to a pat on the back than a slap in the face...
