This episode of the BTB Project podcast #134 delves into the concept of developing an unapologetic winning mindset, essential for achieving success in life and in sports. Kollman draws from personal experiences and the philosophies of Tim Grover, who coached legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, and we explore what it truly means to win.

The conversation covers 13 truths about winning from Grover's book, emphasizing the importance of mental fortitude, self-investment, resilience, embracing solitude, and the importance of continuous improvement. Kollman shares personal anecdotes from his journey, including transformations from being called 'big teddy bear' to realizing his potential as a D1 college tennis player, and later confronting a critical health challenge.

The emphasis is on being relentless, betting on oneself, prioritizing personal growth, managing focus over time, and the perseverance required to overcome obstacles and self-doubt. The episode calls listeners to action, encouraging them to embrace the challenging, ongoing process of winning by developing self-awareness, confronting fears, and staying committed to personal excellence.

The 13 truth's about Winning

  1. Winning is Unapologetic: It's about results, no matter the cost. Winning doesn't care about your excuses or your comfort zone. It demands results, plain and simple.

  2. Mental Warfare: Winning requires mastering your mind. It's a constant battle against doubts, fears, and distractions. Champions defuse these mental explosives and stay focused.

  3. Ultimate Self-Gamble: It's about having the confidence to bet on yourself, even at your lowest. It's about embracing uncertainty and having the courage to leap into the unknown.

  4. Emotional Sacrifice: It demands using your heart less. Emotional control is crucial for maintaining focus and intensity in pursuit of victory.

  5. Take Ownership: Winning starts with personal responsibility. It's about making the right choices and taking actions that lead to success, even when no one else is watching.

  6. No Balance, Just Focus: Achieving greatness requires an unbalanced commitment. Winners prioritize their goals above all else and say no to distractions.

  7. Selfishness for Success: Prioritize personal growth over external opinions. It's about investing in oneself.

  8. Resilience through Adversity: It's a continuous journey filled with challenges. Resilience is built through facing adversity and coming back stronger each time.

  9. Facing Fear and Doubt: Winners acknowledge their fears but refuse to let them control their actions. They focus on controlling what they can change rather than dwelling on what could go wrong.

  10. Embrace Solitude: Winning requires facing inner demons. It's about confronting late-night doubts and insecurities head-on.

  11. Honesty is Key: It requires honesty with oneself about strengths, weaknesses, and effort.

  12. Continuous Pursuit: It's about always striving for improvement and setting new goals once old ones are achieved.

  13. Value of Time: Winners recognize the urgency of their goals and make every moment count.

Episode #56 In this keynote speech, I shared my personal journey of overcoming immense challenges and adversity to inspire and motivate others through the "BTB Project." The acronym "BTB" stands for "Built To Be," which reflects the central theme of discovering our inner strength and resilience.

I began by recounting my upbringing in a challenging environment marked by addiction and turmoil, highlighting the moment when I had to take my mother to rehab at just 16 years old. This experience became a driving force behind my mission.

I emphasized the importance of facing adversity and using it as a catalyst for personal growth. I shared instances of being told I couldn't achieve my dreams, including playing college tennis, and how these challenges only fueled my determination.

My journey took me to a tennis academy where I underwent intense physical and mental transformation to pursue my college tennis dream. I emphasized the power of determination and hard work.

The story took a poignant turn as I recounted a life-altering moment when my mother had a medical emergency. Despite the grim prognosis, she miraculously recovered and whispered, "Go help people," leading me to realize my greater purpose.

I then discussed how my journey led me to become a coach, where I helped individuals and teams achieve their goals in tennis and beyond. I launched the "BTB Project" podcast to share inspiring stories and encourage others to discover their own "why."

I highlighted the importance of family support and nurturing relationships during challenging times.

The speech concluded with a call to action, reminding the audience that life will test us, but it's how we respond to adversity that defines our character. Each person has the resilience to overcome challenges and embark on their own Built To Be journey.

In essence, my story serves as a testament to the human capacity for resilience and personal growth, and it encourages others to discover their inner strength and make a positive impact on the world.

Episode #39 BTB Project In the episode, I delve into the fascinating world of peak performance and flow states with renowned author, clinician, and performance specialist, Scott A. Ford. Join me as we explore the secrets behind accessing the elusive "zone" and learn how athletes of all levels can tap into their full potential on demand.

With a passion for sharing his unique knowledge, Scott has authored several groundbreaking books on the subject, including "Design B: How To Play Tennis In the Zone" and "Welcome To The Zone: Peak Performance Redefined." His expertise extends beyond tennis, as he delves into the realms of body, mind, and spirit in his book "Integral Consciousness and Sport: Unifying Body, Mind, and Spirit through Flow."

As a Founding Member of the Sports, Energy, and Consciousness Group and a contributor to "Sports, Energy, and Consciousness: Awakening Human Potential Through Sport," Scott's insights have reached audiences around the world. His articles have been featured in respected publications such as TennisOne.com, ADDvantage Magazine, Sports Vision Magazine, and Colorado Tennis, establishing him as a leading authority in the field.

Scott's groundbreaking video, "Welcome To The Zone," introduces us to the Parallel Mode Process—a method that allows individuals to access, maintain, and compete in the coveted flow state. Reflecting on his accidental stumble into the zone back in 1978, Scott emphasizes that intentional changes in visual and mental focus on the court can help players of all skill levels reach their peak performance.

In this podcast, we dive into the complex components outlined in Scott's books, exploring topics such as contact sequences, spatiotemporal dimensions, and the Quadratic Structure of Performance states. While these concepts may sound intricate, Scott assures us that they ultimately boil down to timing and being present in the moment. Through techniques like visualizing an imaginary window and using immediate yes/no verbal feedback, athletes can harness their abilities to the fullest.

Not only does Scott seek to empower individual athletes, but he also emphasizes the importance of coaches incorporating these techniques into their coaching styles. Drawing on his own experience as a member of the USPTA since 1977, Scott understands that mastery of these methods only enhances outcomes and doesn't interfere with a coach's unique approach.

Born and raised in Aurora, Scott's journey as a tennis coach began at the tender age of 12. Throughout his career, he has worked with numerous clubs and currently dedicates his time to mentoring young players at Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. His insights on flow and the zone have been shared at esteemed events such as the USTA National Tennis Teachers Conference, USPTA World Congress on Tennis, and the Canadian National Tennis Teachers Conference. Notably, Scott and Team Areté even presented on Visual Dynamics in Combat to the Navy SEALs in Virginia Beach, VA, in 2008.

• Emotional Healing: Forgiveness can provide emotional healing for both the forgiver and the person being forgiven. By letting go of anger, resentment, and negative emotions, individuals can experience a sense of relief, peace, and inner freedom.

• Relationship Repair: Forgiveness plays a crucial role in repairing damaged relationships. When conflicts or hurts occur, forgiveness allows individuals to move past the pain, rebuild trust, and foster healthier connections.

• Personal Growth: Forgiveness promotes personal growth and maturity. It involves letting go of the desire for revenge, practicing empathy, and embracing a compassionate perspective. Through forgiveness, individuals can develop empathy, understanding, and resilience.

• Health Benefits: Studies have shown that forgiveness is associated with various health benefits. Holding onto grudges and unresolved anger can contribute to stress, anxiety, and negative physical health outcomes. Forgiveness, on the other hand, has been linked to improved psychological well-being and lower levels of stress and depression.

• Break the Cycle: Forgiveness can help break the cycle of negativity and conflict. By choosing forgiveness instead of perpetuating a cycle of revenge or resentment, individuals can contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious environment in their personal lives and communities.

• Self-Healing: Forgiveness is not just about pardoning others; it can also involve forgiving oneself. Self-forgiveness allows individuals to let go of guilt, learn from past mistakes, and move forward with self-compassion and personal growth.

• Spiritual and Moral Values: Forgiveness is often considered a virtue in many religious and moral frameworks. It aligns with principles of compassion, love, mercy, and understanding, fostering a sense of peace and harmony within oneself and with others.

What Is a Morning Routine?

From the moment you wake up, your mind is flooded with all the things you need to do. This can feel so overwhelming that you end up wasting time. A morning routine sets you up to WIN your morning and also WIN your day. In today's BTB Short, I share 10 Benefits and 6 Traits that lead to tremendous success in life.

How you spend the morning will influence the rest of your day. If you start feeling rushed or lazy, expect that sensation to remain with you. A morning routine, however, gets you on track from the moment you wake up and puts you in the right frame of mind.

The reason many people hate mornings is that their energy levels are low early in the day. A great thing about a morning routine is that it can increase your energy, especially when you give yourself no time to be lazy and dedicate all your time to your scheduled activities.

If you want an extra energy boost, include a high-intensity workout, meditation, or a cold shower in your morning routine.

There are several ways something as simple as a morning routine can impact your relationships. The big one is lowering stress. It is common to take out stress on a loved one, even though the person may have nothing to do with your frustrations. When you reduce stress, you’re less likely to snap at someone.

A morning routine will also mean that you’re more accessible to your family, which is critical for improving relationships. When you’re better organized, you have more spare time to spend with family members.

When you’re calm and collected, you naturally feel more confident. Plus, better time management will mean you accomplish more, which can also improve your self-esteem.

Your morning routine is just the beginning of your schedule. It’s normal that things won’t always go exactly as you hoped, meaning you’ll need to adapt. Sticking to your morning routine as often as possible is great, but you’ll also need to learn to be flexible if something unexpected happens. Learning to adapt your morning routine around such events will train you to be flexible in other aspects of your life.

Episode #12 is my first BTB short Podcast!

These episodes are focused on weekly motivation on topics in 15 minutes or less. I really wanted to start a podcast 13 years ago and every part of me found a way to talk my way out of starting.

Ideally, 85% of your problems should be solved ASAP! I didn't realize that until I saw how indecision made matters worse in life.

One of my greatest podcast mentors is Ed Mylatt and he says "Most problems and obstacles in life are caused by INDECISION. Instead of taking MASSIVE ACTION toward what they want in life, most people become stagnant and frozen in the face of a challenge and NEVER make a decision."

In today's episode, If you want to eliminate problems from your life, the #1 system you need to adopt is becoming a DECISIVE person, who moves with CERTAINTY and takes MASSIVE ACTION. This system will obliterate 85% of your problems immediately!

Think about the most significant problem you have right now. What effect is it having on your life? Is it affecting your family life? Is it affecting your work? Your faith? Your finances? Your happiness? Your health? Now imagine what your life would be like if it didn’t exist. Problem GONE!

That’s exactly what I’m sharing with you in this message. I’m going to teach you how to eliminate the problems in your life by walking you through my three-step process on how to become a MASTER PROBLEM SOLVER!

Chad Tsuda was a two-time individual champion while attending Fairview High School in 2001 and 2002. He returned as head coach to help bring the Knights their elusive first-team title over powerhouse Cherry Creek High School in 2017. Tsuda, a four-year No. 1 singles player at Fairview, graduated in 2002. Over a dominant high school career, he qualified for the state tournament in each of the four seasons and capped his legacy with back-to-back titles as a junior and senior, losing just one match in the two-year span.

He played collegiately at the University of Colorado, helping lead the Buffs to No. 23 in the nation in doubles and singles as a senior, the highest in school history. After college, he played in Europe before returning to the area to serve as a private instructor and coach with the Knights starting in 2008.

Under Tsuda, Fairview has won the Front Range League tournament title in each of his 12 years at the helm. In 2017, the Knights broke new ground when it won the program’s first state title in history, knocking off stalwart Cherry Creek, who they finished second to the previous six seasons.

While at Fairview, Tsuda taught lessons at Rich’s Tennis School before transitioning to Meadows Swim and Tennis Club, where he also serves as the director of tennis. His story is inspiring and you'll learn the importance of removing the "I" in a team to find true success on and off the court.Journeys: Alumni coach Q-and-A with … Fairview’s Chad Tsudahttps://www.bocopreps.com/2020/06/02/journeys-alumni-coach-q-and-a-with-fairviews-chad-tsuda/

In 2003 I went on a weight journey to help accomplish my goal of playing college tennis. I never knew it would lead to so many lessons learned and more importantly teaching moments to help me help others as I do today. Obesity currently affects four out of 10 Americans, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While weight and overall health aren’t always connected, obesity is often considered a cause of multiple comorbid and chronic medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and heart disease.

Obesity is an epidemic and a meaningful conversation to have, I hope my journey will inspire you to run after any goals you have in your life. Impossible is nothing!

In this episode, I will be sharing the Built to Be journey of my mother Peggy Gearhart. She passed away 18 years ago from addiction to alcohol when I was 20 years old. Now more than ever addiction has become part of many people's lives whether directly or indirectly. Even after all these years, I felt it was important to share her story in its entirety to give a bit more context to the WHY behind the BTB Project "Helping others".

You will be inspired by her perseverance to overcome a difficult childhood and her fighting spirit to face her addiction head-on during her time in rehab.

A Champions Poem

A Champion is a Gentleman;

He does not whine or complain;

He picks himself up when things get tough;

He absolutely never quits;

He wins with class;

He sometimes loses, but does so with class;

A Champion stands tall, with his head high;

He walks proudly and with a purpose;

You are a champion.

On Episode #4 of the BTB Project, there's a topic that's come up in my house recently around being perfect. If you’re wondering whether you are a perfectionist, there’s a good chance you are—at least partially is that a good trait or a bad trait? There's also a good chance you have some investment in being a perfectionist because of the positive connotations of the word "perfect."

Perfectionists are a lot like high achievers, but with some key differences. Today's episode I will discuss the differences, revealing signs of a perfectionist — signs that you may be able to spot in yourself or people you know to help you push toward your goals.

Topics discussed:

All-or-Nothing Thinking

Being Highly Critical

Feeling Pushed by Fear

Having Unrealistic Standards

Causes of Perfectionism

Pitfalls of Being a Perfectionist

How to Overcome Being a Perfectionist

Unhealthy perfectionism can make it difficult to achieve your goals. It can also lead to worry, stress, anxiety, and depression, among other negative outcomes.

If you are a perfectionist and want to reduce some of its negative impacts on your life, there are a few things you can do. Strategies that can help you overcome perfectionism include:

Creating an environment where you feel accepted

Engaging in positive self-talk

Not comparing yourself to others

Practicing mindfulness to help you learn how to focus on the present without worrying as much about the past or future

This BTB Project episode was an interview with my former inspiring tennis student Peyton Palermo who I met with she was 14. Peyton was initially diagnosed with a brain tumor at age five. After the first tumor was successfully removed, Peyton went on to find success as a high-level tennis player. In 2011, she was ranked 11th in the 12 and under age grouping for the girls' Satellite division in Colorado. However, the tumor grew back, and on August 29, 2011, Peyton had another surgery to remove the regrown tumor. The surgery left Peyton with a loss of coordination on the entire right side of her body. She could not walk, write or catch. Her speech and eyesight were also impacted. But Peyton kept on fighting.

We trained together at 5 am multiple days a week for the better part of 4 years to help her regain strength to the right side of her body and allow her to play varsity high school tennis. In every training session, Peyton chose to “be strong, fight hard, and dig deep.” This 24-year-old Colorado native fought back and not only won on the tennis court as a junior but also impacts lives in her adult life. You will be encouraged by her story and find value in the advice she has to help you overcome challenges and find what YOU are Built to Be.

In 2023 the word on the street is things are going to get rough for our economy and day-to-day life with the rise of inflation. Today's episode is a keynote on tools you can use to help you navigate the circumstances as they come up and go after what you are Built to Be. The BTB project was built with these tools and I want you the listener to be motivated, encouraged, and determined to change your life after hearing a bit more about mine.

Here is the list of tools we will cover in the Podcast:

Breath

Speak

Writing it down

Give one take one

Write letters of apology or thanks

Move your body

1% better every day

Faith

Simon Senek- “Charisma has nothing to do with energy; it comes from a clarity of WHY. It comes from absolute conviction in an ideal bigger than oneself. Energy, in contrast, comes from a good night’s sleep or lots of caffeine. Energy can excite. But only charisma can inspire. Charisma commands loyalty. Energy does not.”

What are you Built to Be? It's a question I've always asked myself personally and I've got to ask 1000's of people as a coach over the last 22 years. In today's episode, I introduce the BTB project and walk through an old interview question list from a former client from 2015. The Q&A will allow you to get to know me and also get an idea of what's to come ahead in future episodes. You can find the list of questions below:

What about your past helps you?

Can you explain how your past has brought you here?

What is your favorite part about being a coach? What is your least favorite?

How long have you played tennis?

What pushes you to be so inspirational?

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you while teaching?

Can you share something about a difficult time in your life when you didn't know how you would get through it and what you chose to do to overcome it

What do you think your students would say about your attitude every day during practice?

What keeps are you going when life gets complicated?

Why did you choose to become a tennis coach?

If you could choose any job in the world... Would you still be coaching?

If your wildest dream could come true... What would it be?

Where do you see yourself in: 5 years-10 years 20 years?

What's one thing that people don't know about you that they would be surprised to learn?

Was there a question that you thought I would ask but didn't?

Final question: if one of your students was having a bad day... What advice would you give them?
