๐ซ Confronting Gossip with Facts: Instead of trying to suppress gossip, humane leaders are encouraged to correct misinformation with publicly available facts, turning potentially harmful rumors into transparent discussions. ํฉํธ โ
๐ Data-Driven Feedback: When providing feedback, especially on performance, using measurable and irrefutable facts allows for constructive discussions and helps team members understand areas for improvement without dispute. ๐

In this insightful episode, Roberto and Chris guide listeners through the critical process of identifying negative traits and red flags during a job interview. They emphasize that interviewing is a two-way street, and candidates should be just as vigilant in assessing a potential employer as the employer is in evaluating them. Drawing from their extensive experience, they share personal anecdotes and practical advice on what to look out for.
Here's what we covered:
๐คฌ Inappropriate Conduct: Chris recounts an experience where a CIO's constant swearing during an interview was an immediate deal-breaker, highlighting that cultural fit and professional communication are crucial.
๐๏ธ Disrespect for Your Time: Roberto shares an experience of an interviewer failing to show up for a scheduled meeting, underscoring that a lack of punctuality and respect for a candidate's time is a major red flag for how the company values its employees.
๐ฏ Prepararation: The hosts discuss the importance of interviewers being prepared. If an interviewer hasn't even reviewed your resume, it could signal a disorganized environment, excessive workload, or a general lack of respect.
๐ฃ๏ธ Micromanagement Tendencies: Be wary of questions or discussions that hint at a micromanagement culture. Roberto suggests asking about leadership style and autonomy to gauge if the environment will be stifling or empowering.
๐ค Canned or Slogan-Filled Answers: Chris advises caution if interviewers offer only generic, marketing-speak answers about company culture. A lack of genuine, scenario-based explanations might indicate a superficial culture or one heavily managed from above.
๐ Lack of Passion or Energy: Observe the energy and passion of your interviewers. A noticeable lack of enthusiasm, especially when discussing their day-to-day or the company's work, can be a sign of burnout or a disengaged workforce.
๐ Poor Team Interaction: Pay attention to how team members interact with each other during handoffs or casual encounters. Positive, energetic exchanges are a good sign, while dreary or tense interactions can signal underlying issues.
โ๏ธ Objective Evaluation (Even When Desperate): The most crucial advice is to remain objective, even when you're desperate for a job. Roberto and Chris encourage creating a list of "must-haves" and "deal-breakers" to objectively evaluate opportunities and avoid accepting a role that will likely lead to dissatisfaction.

In this engaging episode, Chris and Roberto delve into the delicate balance of being a humane leader who is likable and approachable, without being fake or trying to be a team's "friend." They share personal anecdotes and practical wisdom on how to build genuine rapport, coach effectively, and foster a respectful team environment.
Here's what we covered:
๐ Building Genuine Rapport: Chris and Roberto highlight the importance of taking a genuine interest in team members' lives outside of work, like inquiring about vacations. This authentic connection builds a bond and trust, making team members more comfortable sharing information.
โ Avoiding the "Friend" Trap: A key takeaway is that humane leaders are coaches, not friends. While building strong relationships is important, maintaining a professional distance allows for objective coaching, both for praise and correction.
๐ Public Praise, Private Coaching: The hosts stress the power of giving specific, public credit to team members for their successes. Conversely, corrective feedback should be delivered privately and constructively, protecting individual dignity and fostering trust.
๐ค Admitting Mistakes: Humane leaders lead by example, including admitting their own mistakes. This transparency encourages team members to feel safer in bringing their own problems and errors to the leader, rather than trying to cover them up.
fairness and Tough Decisions: Being a humane leader also means being fair and, at times, making unpopular decisions for the good of the team, such as removing an underperforming member. This demonstrates that all team members are held to the same standards, fostering respect.
๐ The Sports Team Analogy: Roberto shares a powerful story from his volleyball days, illustrating how a coach's firm but empathetic approach to a struggling star player ultimately led to team success. This highlights the importance of timely intervention and supportive coaching.

In this insightful episode, Roberto and Chris dive into the crucial role of humane leadership during times of crisis. They emphasize that while all leaders will inevitably face crises, approaching them with a calm, logical, and methodical mindset is paramount for both problem-solving and maintaining team morale. Chris and Roberto share their experiences, particularly from the IT world, and offer practical strategies for guiding teams through stressful situations.
Here's what we covered:
๐ง Logic over Emotion: The episode kicks off by highlighting the importance of applying logic and avoiding emotional reactions when a crisis hits. A calm leader fosters a calm team, which is essential for effective problem-solving.
๐ฏ Prioritization and Interrelation: Leaders must prioritize multiple crises and help their teams see the bigger picture, recognizing how seemingly unrelated issues might be connected. This holistic view aids in identifying root causes.
๐ฃ๏ธ Data-Driven Discussion & Documentation: Bringing hard data to the table and encouraging open discussion among team members, including introverts, is vital. Documenting ideas and decisions helps prevent duplicated efforts and creates a clear path forward.
โ Verify Facts, Not Hearsay: A significant pitfall in crisis management is acting on unverified information. Humane leaders insist on confirming facts to ensure troubleshooting efforts are based on accurate data, saving time and preventing misdirection.
โ Divide and Conquer: Borrowing from computer science principles like "dividing in half," the hosts explain how breaking down large problems into smaller, manageable components can quickly isolate the most likely cause, allowing teams to focus resources effectively.
๐ก๏ธ Leader's Confidence as a Shield: Just as a parent secures their own oxygen mask before helping a child, leaders must first cultivate their own confidence to then instill it in their team. This self-assurance is foundational for navigating uncertainty.
โ๏ธ Keep it in Perspective: While business crises are serious, Chris offers a crucial perspective: in most scenarios, no one's life is at stake. This realization can significantly reduce stress levels, enabling calmer, more logical decision-making.

And if it doesnโt, itโs okay to say goodbye and move on to somewhere that feels like a better fit. ๐ผโจ Chris explained that you donโt need to be in your 40s or 50s to make these kinds of decisions, and that happiness at work is worth chasing โ no matter what stage of your career youโre at. ๐
In this episode, we dive into:
How to identify if a company's culture aligns with yours ๐ค Overcoming the fear of rejection and finding your โyesโ ๐ช The importance of finding a place where youโre genuinely excited to wake up and go to work โฐ Being happy in your job โ whether it's a big company, medium-sized, or startup ๐ฑ
Both also shared his thoughts, and we both agreed that sometimes, staying in a place that doesnโt align with you just isnโt worth it. No job is worth sacrificing your happiness for. ๐
If youโve been wondering whether itโs time to make a change or simply need to hear someone tell you that it's okay to switch โ this episode is for YOU. ๐ง

We're here to explore the pros and cons of both approaches and help you strike the right balance between performance and people. In this episode of the podcast, I played the role of the interviewer and my colleague Chris played the role of the candidate. With 25+ years of experience in startups, I took on the challenge of interviewing Chris as if he was a candidate for a position at a startup. We went through a series of questions and Chris provided answers, while I provided insight and analysis on the purpose of each question and what the interviewer should expect from a candidate. Our goal was to provide our listeners with a better understanding of what to expect in an interview at a startup and how to prepare for it. We aimed to not only share tips and tricks for acing an interview, but also to give a deeper understanding of the interviewer's perspective, the reasoning behind the questions, and how to approach them for a successful interview.
In this podcast episode, as a co-host, I had the opportunity to conduct an interview role-play with my co-host Chris. Chris, who had 35 years of experience working at large companies, played the role of the interviewer and I played the role of the candidate. Chris asked me a series of questions, I answered them and Chris provided insight and analysis on not just the purpose of the questions but also the why and how these questions have to be asked by the interviewer.ย
The episode aimed to give our audience an understanding of what to expect in an interview at a large company and how to prepare for it. The goal was to not only provide tips and tricks to our listeners on how to ace an interview in a large company but also to give an understanding of the interviewer's perspective, the reasoning behind the questions, and how to approach them for a successful interview.
In this episode, we talked about how we leaders have to speak to candidates about the company culture since many of them don't know what they are getting into either in a big corporation or a startup.
Now it's Roberto's turn to talk about what is needed to be a humane leader in startups where he has worked for the last 25+ years in many different ones, focusing on motivating tech teams in all the turmoil that surrounds being in such dynamic companies.
In this episode, Chris talks about what is needed to be a humane leader in a big corporation thanks to his 35+ years of experience at a big corporation, especially in bad times when there are layoffs.
In this episode, Cris and Roberto gave examples of easy as well as challenging problems they had in the past with direct reports who received a direct order and chose to disobey it.
In this podcast's first episode, we speak of the humbleness leaders must have regardless of the size of the company you work for or the situation you are facing.
