Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Sun and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Aquarius Sun as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the astrologer Cameron Allen.
I’m really excited to be dropping this next episode of my new Sun Series, which will continue for the next year. For new listeners, please go back and listen to the Moon series that I’ve been doing over the last year where I spoke to different astrologers about their Moon sign. These Aquarius Sun episodes were really fun for me to record and I think they’re very engaging conversations. It was really interesting to go right from Saturn’s nocturnal sign of Capricorn last month to their diurnal air sign of Aquarius this month to see the contrast of these signs and how the Sun shows up there.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. For those of you interested in an astrological reading, I’ve closed my books this month, as I got a full-time job that’s taking up a lot of my time. But I highly suggest going through this and past episodes to find a practitioner with which you resonate.
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Sun and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode we are doing something a little bit different than our regular Sun Series. I put out a call on social media for Aquarius Suns that would like to come onto the podcast to have a more casual conversation about the placement and to look at the charts of famous Aquarius Suns. As we are looking in depth at a lot of charts, I would suggest watching the video version of this episode on my YouTube channel, but if you are unable to do that, I made an effort in this episode to at least spell out the important placements in each of these people’s charts.
If you do watch the episode on YouTube, I’d ask that you please like, subscribe, comment, and do all that fun stuff.
I was really honored to be joined today by five really lovely people and astrologers: Anna Astronaut Pants, Joli/Bodhi Mindful, Nicola Allan, Solar Simone, Héloïse the Social Astrologer. Together we talked about the charts of Christian Dior, Shakira, Judy Blume, Megan Thee Stallion, and Michael Jordan. I think this conversation displayed the diversity of the way that this placement can show up in a birth chart and in a native’s life, as well as commonalities that can arise between natives with this Sun Sign.
These astrologers are all doing some great work right now. I wanted to plug Simone’s YouTube, as she’s done some really cool videos on there, especially talking about TV, film, and astrology.
I’ve linked Héloïse’s course on the Lunar Nodes and eclipses that we discuss in this episode. In addition she has a lot of great blog posts on her website, one of which we also mention in this episode.
Nicola recently put out an oracle deck, which is really cute. I really like the illustrations! Nicola and I recently had a conversation on Twitter where she shared the interpretation of my natal’s Sun’s decan from the deck’s guidebook, which I thought was really intriguing, so I’d definitely check that out in the show notes if you are interested.
In addition, I’ve linked Joli’s and Anna’s websites in the show notes. Joli also has some interesting talks linked in their linktree, and I’ve also provided a link to The Association of Young Astrologers, an organization to which Anna is the treasurer. They occasionally give talks, a few of which I’ve attended and gotten a lot out of, so definitely look into being a member of you are interested.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Sun and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Aquarius Sun as the Sect Light I speak with the incredibly brilliant, prolific astrologer Kira Ryberg.
In this conversation, we talk about a lot of different Sun topics, and I just want to plug some of Kira’s lectures that relate to the Sun that I’ve personally gotten a lot out of. The first one is the 9th House lecture, which is the House where the Sun joys - perhaps where it likes to be in a chart most - the Purpose & Profession lecture, which talks a lot about the Lot of Spirit, the Sun’s lot, and Kira’s Zodiacal Releasing lecture, where she talks about using the Lot of Spirit in that particular timing technique. In addition, if you haven’t already and want to hear more of Kira and I chatting about astrology, we did another episode on the Lot of Fortune earlier last year, so you can check that out too. I’ve provided a link to Kira’s lectures in the show notes.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and timing consultations, as well as answering horary questions.
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Sun and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Capricorn Sun as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the astrologer, archivist, and podcast host Elly Higgins.
I’m really excited to be dropping this next episode of my new Sun Series, which will continue for the next year. For new listeners, please go back and listen to the Moon series that I’ve been doing over the last year where I spoke to different astrologers about their Moon sign. This Capricorn Sun episode was particularly important for me, as I also have the Capricorn Sun as my Luminary Out of Sect, so I was really excited for this conversation.
Elly has a great podcast called ‘Star Gays: The Queer Astrology Archives Podcast,’ and just like the series I’m doing, he will be following the Sun over the next year and doing episodes that highlights a famous person with that Sun Sign. He’s just released the first episode of that series where he talks about Susan Sontag, a writer and intellectual that we talk a little bit about in both Capricorn Sun episodes. She wrote one of my favorite book of essays that I found before I actually became a student of astrology, which has the auspicious title ‘Under the Sign of Saturn.’ The book contains an essay with the same name that’s about one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century, Walter Benjamin, and his off-beat, melancholic nature and Saturnian way of thinking, intentionally subscribing to older ways of thought and comportment, shunning the fashions of his time. I’ve provided a link to that book as well as Elly’s podcast in the show notes, so please give it a listen.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and timing consultations, as well as answering horary questions.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Scorpio Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the astrologer Caleb McCoy. Earlier in November, was the anniversary of the launch of the podcast. This is the last episode of my Moon series, and I want to take a moment to say how grateful and honored I feel to have been able to do this work and have these conversations over the last year.
Thank you to everyone that listened, shared the show, supported it financially, and a very special thank you to all of my guests that have come on to talk with me. I couldn’t have done it without you and I really appreciate you sharing your time, wisdom, and experience with us all.
But this isn’t the end of the podcast. As many of you know, I started a Sun sign series this Scorpio season. I’m really excited to be moving into this new chapter of the podcast as we reach the first anniversary of its creation. I hope you enjoy that new series.
Before we get into the episode, I do want to offer a bit of a content warning on this one. A lot of this episode revolves around Caleb and I discussing the philosophical problem of suicide. I do think that we come to a pretty hopeful conclusion as a result of our own academic, spiritual, and personal journeys, but I do want to give listeners a heads up, so that they can dive into this episode when they’re emotionally and mentally prepared to navigate those topics.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Libra Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the astrologer and writer Whitney Hill.
I really enjoyed this conversation - not that I don’t enjoy all of the conversations that I have with my guests - and how knowledgeable Whitney is about Egyptian myth and spirituality and how that was intimately connected with meticulous astronomical observation and rich astrological significations.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and timing consultations, as well as answering horary questions.
I’m offering a discount on my readings this month. Please use coupon code OCTOBER23 by the end of October for 25% off.
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Libra Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer and musician Mercurius George.
First off, I want to give a big thank you to everyone that supported me on my drive across the country. I arrived in New York on Friday, and it took me about a week to get here from Los Angeles. We should be back on track with the episode release schedule.
I’m excited to announce that I will be participating in two little speaking engagements over the next month.
If you listen to this the day it’s released, I will be joining Courtney Vivienne Henriette (@art_of_the_zodiac) on Wednesday October 4th on Instagram Live at 9PM EDT, so please come join us on then if you are able.
In addition, I’ll be speaking on past Luminaries In and Out of Sect podcast guest Catherine Urban’s Chart Rulership Panel on Thursday October 12th from 7-9pm ET, and that will be on Catherine’s Patreon, I believe. I’m really excited to talk about my exalted, 8th House Jupiter there and how that’s manifested in my life, and I’m so honored to be among some incredible astrologers that are also on the panel, several of which were also past guests of this pod.
Please, see the show notes for more info on both of those events.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and timing consultations, as well as answering horary questions.
And to show my gratitude for all those that have shown me love and support lately, I wanted to offer a discount on my readings this month. Please use coupon code OCT23 by the end of October for 25% off.
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Virgo Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the artist, diviner, writer, and educator J.M. Hamade.
In addition to discussing the Virgo Moon in Jay’s 3rd WSH in this conversation we also touch on the Lunar Mansions, or Nakshatras. As Jay is a student of both the Vedic and Arabic Tradition, we compare and contrast the two systems quite a bit. We also talk about the nature of the 3rd House and the Moon’s Joy there, as well as the relationship of Mercury and the Moon, and Virgo and ideas of virginity and parthenogenesis.
Before we dive into the conversation, I wanted to give y’all a little update on my life, especially as it relates to the podcast. So I’m moving back to New York and will be driving across the country from Los Angeles the last week in September. This will coincide with the beginning of Libra season, so the first Libra Moon episode will be uploaded a little later than I usually would. Just wanted to let y’all know.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and timing consultations, as well as answering horary questions. I also offer transcription, captioning, and audio and video editing. Thanks again to all of those that have offered their generous support. Appreciate you!
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
Today I have a special episode for you about the Lunar Nodes with the astrologer Aerin Fogel.
As we talk about in the episode, the Lunar Nodes are the points where the Sun’s ecliptic and the Moon’s path intersect, more or less. I wanted to point out that the other planets have nodes in relation to the Sun’s path. In my episode with Jared Williams, we talk about that a bit more, but in today’s episode we’re focusing on the Lunar Nodes in particular.
As we also talk about in the episode, Aerin’s band Queen of Swords is currently touring. Aerin is playing a show at Pop Montreal on September 28th, so if you are in the area please see the website linked in the show notes for more information.
Before we dive into the conversation, I wanted to give y’all a little update on my life, especially as it relates to the podcast. So I’m moving back to New York and will be driving across the country from Los Angeles the last week in September. This will coincide with the beginning of Libra season, so I’ll likely get that first Libra Moon episode uploaded a little later than I usually would. Just wanted to let y’all know.
In addition, if you have any suggestions for things that I should see on my cross-country drive, please hit me up on social media and let me know. Thanks in advance for that.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Virgo Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer, artist, diviner Chloe Margherita.
As you’ll hear in this conversation, I’ve been traveling for the last month and things have been somewhat hectic. A lot of changes going on in my life. In order to stay on schedule with the podcast, I didn’t edit this conversation as rigorously as I have for other episodes, which feels really ironic given that we’re on the Virgo Moon episode. I also didn’t include as many links in the show notes as I usually would. I’m sorry about that, folks. Life is “lifeing” over here and I’m doing my best.
But Chloe has some great courses and lectures that she’s selling right now - like her Fixed Star Lecture and her Heliacal Rising and Setting Star Course, so I’d highly recommend checking them out. All that is linked in the show notes.
We spoke about a lot of really interesting things in this conversation from the challenges the benefic planets can face in Virgo, to the connection between Mercury and the Moon. We talk a bit about Kim Kardashian’s chart and how Virgo can relate to issues of class. We also touched on the Lunar Mansions and Fixed Stars and how Chloe engages with them.
I do want to give a bit of a content warning for this conversation as we do touch on challenges with food.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
Today I have a special episode for you about the Lot of Fortune. I spoke with the brilliant Kira Ryberg. We cover the basics of this technique in this episode, but it’s really meant as a short, digestible introduction to the topic. Please visit Kira’s website, which is linked in the show notes, to acquire her more comprehensive lectures on the Hermetic Lots, Zodiacal Releasing, and other topics.
I want to give a bit of a content warning on this episode. Because we are talking about the lot of the Moon, we talk a lot in this conversation about the intersection of care, fate, and trauma, especially as it relates to the Divine, so I just want to give listeners a heads up that this is a pretty heavy conversation, but I also personally found it to be really beautiful and meaningful.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
Today I have a special episode for you about the Secondary Progressed Lunation Cycle. I spoke with the wonderful Catherine Urban. We cover the basics of this technique in this episode, but it’s really meant as a short, digestible introduction to the topic.
If you’re interested in learning more about this topic, please see the links in the show notes to find more information on Catherine’s self-paced course on Secondary Progressions, as well as other, more comprehensive treatments of the matter.
A few of my favorite parts of this conversation were our discussion of how many timing techniques in astrology all follow the same fundamental logic, as well as our discussion of the overlap between Secondary Progressions, Annual Profections, and Planetary Returns.
Hope you enjoy it!

In today’s episode on the Leo Moon as the Sec Light I speak I had two amazing guests today. Thought I’d give it a shot. Why not? I was very honored to speak with the brilliant Hawk Grubbs and Sadalsvvd.
We spoke about the placement of their Moon sign and placement, but we also covered a lot of other ground. I really loved how philosophical we got in this conversation, touching on the dialectic of being and nothingness, the absurdity of gendering spirituality and divinity, the nature of form as it interacts with consciousness, and the emergent phenomena of bifurcation. In addition, we talked about how seemingly neutral astrological concepts may bely biases. We also talked about oppositions vs aversions, and the relationship between Saturn and the luminaries.
Now for today’s conversation. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Cancer Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the brilliant Jared Williams.
We spoke about the placement of Jared’s Moon in the 1st Whole Sign House, but we also covered a lot of other ground. We actually talked about a lot of astronomical and scientific concepts in this episode such as barycenters, especially as they relate to the relationship of the Sun and the planets and of the Earth and the Moon. In addition, we talked about thermal lag in relation to the Sun’s domicile of Leo and the sign of Cancer, as well as its joy in the 9th House. We also talked a bit about the nodes, not only of the Moon but also of the other planets as well as the Sun. In addition, we talked about the relationship of the Moon and Jupiter astrologically, and finished our conversation with a poignant discussion on death and meaning and what it fundamentally means to do astrology.
Today I have a special episode for you about the sign of Cancer through the houses of each Rising Sign. I spoke with the wonderful Lindsey Turner who many of you likely know online as Bad Pastor.
We had some challenges with our internet during the recording, and there were also some muffled noises in the recording that were a challenge to edit out. My apologies for that. In addition, we talk about some sensitive topics in this conversation, so here’s a bit of a heads up on that. We talk about death as it relates to meaning and life, and also touch on my recent grief around the loss of my pet. So if these are sensitive subjects for you, please proceed with caution.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing on the podcast, please contribute to its sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. There you can also find information on my services. I’m offering natal and horary consultations, in addition to a timing consult that I recently launched. Now for my conversation with Lindsey. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Cancer Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer Amaya Rourke.
We spoke about the placement of Amaya’s Moon in the 9th Whole Sign House, but talked about many other things from the absorption of pagan practices into early Christianity, to the effects of the Moon’s cycles on marine animals’ mating habits, to the Myth of Hercules and the Hydra, and the way Cancer and Capricorn were viewed in Ancient Egypt. We talked about ‘Sleeping Beauty’ as a myth of the Moon. We talked about some of the differences between astrology and magic and other occult practices. Amaya spoke of her experience of the sensitivity that can accompany the Cancer Moon and suggestions for navigating that such as Vagus Nerve work and breathwork. We discussed her Waxing Gibbous Moon phase, especially as it relates to constantly striving, as well as the effects of the Moon being Out Of Bounds. We also talked about The Lot of Fortune and profecting from different points, and how Secondary Progressions can modulate the natal lunar placement.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
I HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS ABOUT THE PODCAST FOR YOU ALL TODAY! Basically, I’m planning to do some additional episodes on the Moon and topics related to the Moon in the coming months, in addition to my regular Sect Light/Luminary Out of Sect episode. Today’s episode is with Gray Crawford and in it we talk about the Moon in the elements and the phases.
It’s an abridged version of his recent NORWAC talk entitled ‘The Moon in the Four Elemental Roots’, which I’ve linked in the show notes. From the moment I saw the name of Gray’s lecture, I knew that I wanted to invite him on the podcast. Thankfully, because of the generous support of the Association of Young Astrologers I was able to attend NORWAC digitally this year on a partial scholarship. I was grateful to be able to watch Gray’s lecture among a number of other really informative talks.
In addition to this episode, I am also planning to release something on the Progressed Lunar Phase, the Lot of Fortune, and Hecate in the coming weeks and months, among other episodes.
As always, if you enjoy the work that I’m doing, please contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation on my website. Now for my conversation with Gray. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Gemini Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the brilliant astrologer Rob Bailey.
We spoke about the placement of Rob’s Moon in the 3rd Whole Sign House, but also go off on a lot of tangents. We discuss Rob’s early love of Greek and Medieval History, and his journey to discovering astrology as a passion or subject of interest in his late 20s, the historical and philosophical tradition of magic. We go on kind of a long tangent about the challenges of practicing horary astrology as well the service that branch can provide. We also talk about our shared love of Tolkien, and the importance of engaging with different myths around the creation of the stars and lights. Upon reflection, it was a bit ironic and funny how lunar our discussion of the “realness” or tangibility of certain fictional worlds, given the Moon’s association with imagination and dreams. Rob explains the difference of worldview and cosmology in the Medieval world, just how important the Moon was to their understanding of reality, and how they viewed signs in comparison to the more psychologized interpretations prevalent today. We also talk about planets in joy and what it can mean to have one’s Ascendent Ruler in the 6th House. We talk about the myth of Castor and Pollux and how that relates to Rob’s relationship with his brother and how the Moon in Rob’s 3rd House plays into that.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Gemini Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer Suprasensory Shahir.
We talked about the placement of their Moon in 7th Whole Sign House and how that manifests as an abundance of close one-to-one relationships for Shair. We also talked about the importance of the nodes and nodal transits, a bit about the Moon’s role in Islam and mystical strains of Islam like Sufism, the myth of Persephone as it relates to Hecate and the Moon, the divine protection that can come with worldly rejection (and my continued struggles with that), the myth of Castor and Pollux as it relates to Gemini, as well as Gemini’s mutable air nature, which is often very social and intellectual. We also talk about the common, versatile nature of Mercury and how that relates to temperament. Shahir and I discuss common Tarot correspondences with the decans of Gemini as well as the Lunar Mansion that fall in Gemini.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Taurus Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the astrologer Steph Koyfman.
We talked about the placement of her Moon in 8th Whole Sign House, but also talked about a lot of other placements in her natal chart as well as important parts of her astrological practice. We discussed the potential tendencies of exalted planets, what a stationary Venus can mean in a chart and how she can manifest as a morning star. We discussed the centrality of the Progressed Lunar Phase to Steph’s practice as well as how the Moon can express herself in different phases. And we discussed the potential of 8th House placements to receive support from others.
Now for my conversation with Steph. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Taurus Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer Sabrina Monarch.
We talk about the placement of her Moon in the 3rd Whole Sign (and Quadrant) House, but we also talk about the many other things, such as the potential overlap of the role of karma in Evolutionary Astrology and that of fate in Hellenistic Astrology, Algol and Semele, the Moon’s joy in the 3rd House, sect and instinct, the New Moon and Spring and faith, the Moon’s ability to transfer light, planets at the bendings, and planets at the anaretic degree of a sign, the magic but hard work of one-to-one relationships, and the Dionysian, mytho-poetic, ritual experience, Ecstasis, that she’s hosting in June, 2023.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
Today we are doing something a little bit different. This is the final episode of a mini-series entitled ‘What Makes An Astrologer,’ which came about as a result of the comments that Rob Hand made on a recent Astrology Podcast episode about significations in the birth chart of a professional astrologer.
The link to this episode is in the show notes. Therein, Rob Hand makes a bit of an off-hand comment saying
“The 11th sign from the Lot of Fortune is a Place of Acquisition. People [at Project Hindsight] started looking at their charts, and an awful lot of people had one of the following things true: The Lot of Fortune was in a sign ruled by Mercury, or Mercury was in the sign of the Lot of Fortune, or those same two condition applied to The Place of Acquisition, which is the 11th sign from the Lot of Fortune. And to this day, if I don’t find that in a person’s chart, I wonder about their credentials as an astrologer. This is for making money by astrology, by the way. It’s not for studying it. All you need to study it is a good, solid Mercury.”
In response to that, Michel, who is @astrospeccion on Twitter, shared a database of famous astrologers from astro-seek.com with me, and encouraged me to do more research into this subject. I was reticent, but Mo, who is @austral_taur on Twitter, told me that she’d help me carry out a research project looking at Hand’s criteria in famous and/or professional astrologers. Mo and I ended up looking at about 90 charts of historical, famous astrologers, and received input from about 40 contemporary professional astrologers through a Google form survey.
In this series, I spoke with five astrologers and thinkers - Cameron Allen, Daniel Norman, Amy Green, Dorje Kirsten, and Ali A Olomi - about their thoughts on Rob Hand’s comments, and other significations they identify in the birth chart that may point to remuneration from astrology.
This is the culmination of the series, a conversation between Mo and I where we discuss our research and the conclusions that we’ve drawn from it. In addition, I plan to release an article on my website in the next couple of weeks where I summarize our findings and the thoughts of my guests in this series.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Aries Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the one and only Kirah Tabourn.
We talk about the placement of her Moon in the 2nd Whole Sign House, but we also talk about the many other things, such as the crucial importance of sect in delineating planets roles and effectiveness in the birth chart, emphasizing Venus as a salve to excess Mars, Mars and Venus as emotions, fertility astrology and parenthood, and the role that Saturn’s return can play in the relationship one has with their body and Moon. We also touch upon some challenging topics in this episode, such as difficulties with food and chronic illness, so just something to keep in mind as you proceed.
I also wanted to take a moment to reiterate that I recently launched a website for the podcast! There you can find information on all the episodes, as well as contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation. Thank you so much to all of the folks who have already supported the podcast — it really helps me in carrying out this work! The website also has information on my services. In today’s episode on the Aries Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the astrologer Tony-of-the-Woods.
We talk about the placement of his Moon on the Midheaven in the 10th Whole Sign House, but we also talk about many other things, such as the challenges of having the Moon in a hot, dry sign, druidism and Ogham, the Moon’s role in Islam, the story of Jason and Medea and the Golden Fleece, the philosophy of Alfred Whitehead, the difference between fate and destiny, and Lunar Mansions and their remedies.

Today we are doing something a little bit different. This is the fifth episode of a mini-series entitled ‘What Makes An Astrologer,’ which came about as a result of the comments that Rob Hand made on a recent Astrology Podcast episode about significations in the birth chart of a professional astrologer.
The link to this episode is in the show notes. Therein, Rob Hand makes a bit of an off-hand comment saying:
“The 11th sign from the Lot of Fortune is a Place of Acquisition. All you need to study it is a good, solid Mercury.”
In this series, I will speak with five astrologers and thinkers - Cameron Allen, Daniel Norman, Amy Green, Dorje Kirsten, and Ali A Olomi - about their thoughts on Rob Hand’s comments, and other significations they identify in the birth chart that may point to remuneration from astrology.
The series will culminate in a conversation between Mo and I where we discuss our research and the conclusions that we’ve drawn from it. In addition, I plan to release an article on my website after the series airs where I summarize our findings and the thoughts of my guests in this series.
Please be sure to subscribe to my website for updates, which is linked in the show notes below.
Now for my fifth conversation, the penultimate episode of this series with the astrologer and academic Ali A Olomi.
In many ways, my conversation with Ali was a culmination of topics put forth by the other guests of this series. First off, referring to astrologers of the Medieval Islamicate, he corroborated the criteria put forward by Rob Hand, while adding crucial details and addenda. Furthermore, Ali mentioned looking at the 3rd House, which was mentioned by Cameron Allen. He spoke of the 9th House, which was mentioned by Daniel Norman and Amy Green. He spoke to the importance of the Lot of Spirit, which Dorje Kirsten and I discussed in depth. And Ali also reiterated points put forward by Amy Green, such as looking to the term lord of the Ascendent and Midheaven to discern the vocation of the native. But he added enriching texture and detail to discussions of this topic as well. He suggested looking at the dodecatemoria, the 12th part, of the Ascendant and the Lot of Fortune. We discussed looking at the house 11th from the Lot of Spirit, as well what planets cast rays there, and Ali outlined the differences between the more Mercurial Modern Astrology from the Saturnian pre-modern Astrology.
I was really honored to be able to have this conversation with Ali, and to have all of the conversations in this series. Thanks again for joining, Ali, and for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us.

Today we are doing something a little bit different. This is the third episode of a mini-series entitled ‘What Makes An Astrologer,’ which came about as a result of the comments that Rob Hand made on a recent Astrology Podcast episode about significations in the birth chart of a professional astrologer.
The link to this episode is in the show notes. Therein, Rob Hand makes a bit of an off-hand comment saying

Now for my fourth conversation of this series with the astrologer Amy Green.
In this episode we get quite technical and textual by talking about several delineations laid out by Firmicus Maternus and Abu Ma’shar. In particular, we discuss Firmicus’ material on the house 2nd from the Lot of Fortune and the planets therein, as well as the importance of the 9th House and Venus and Mercury’s placements therein as they relate to astrology. In addition, we discussed the term lords of the Ascendent, as it relates to the native’s talents and vocation.
In reference to Abu Ma’shar, we spoke about the Lot of Works - which could be considered either a 2nd House lot or a 10th House lot, and speaks to “the nature of the goods that someone creates.” By day it is calculated by measuring from Mercury to Venus and projecting from the Ascendent. By night we would do the opposite, so measure from Venus to Mercury and project form the Ascendent.
We concluded our talk by looking at these delineations in the chart of Demetra George, which was really illuminating.
Thanks again Amy for joining me for this conversation and sharing your knowledge with us. I really appreciate it.

Now for my third conversation of this series with the thought provoking astrologer Dorje Kirsten of Heart Astrology. Here’s a bit more about Dorje from his bio on his website, which I’ve linked in the show notes.
“Dorje was certified as a medieval astrologer in 2011. He is a professional astrologer who offers a variety of services to personal clients. His method of reading the chart is a blend of classical techniques and modern interpretations, a culmination of 30 years of study. For 20 years he has been reading charts professionally using traditional astrology techniques learned from experience and studying courses from such luminaries as Robert Zoller, Robert Hand, Bernadette Brady, and Joseph Crane.”
Speaking on his training as an astrologer, Dorje said: "I think it is important that anyone giving professional readings certifies from a successful teacher, and has mindfulness or therapy training of some sort under their belt."
In this episode we talk about the importance of defining what it means to be an astrologer, the difficulties inherent therein, and the boundaries of the label “professional astrologer.”
In addition to talking about the Moon in the charts of astrologers, we also talk about the roles that Venus and Jupiter may play, and get into stoicism vs. theurgy as it relates to the very purpose of astrology. It was a really rich, informative conversation. Thanks again for joining me, Dorje.

All you need to study it is a good, solid Mercury.”
In the wake of this episode, there was some commentary about it on social media. Being curious about what Hand said, I put out a tweet thread looking at these conditions in five professional astrologers charts. In one way or another, all five of those people met Hand’s criteria. I’ve put a link to that tweet thread in the show notes for your reference.

Now for my second conversation of this series with the thoughtful, gracious astrologer Daniel Norman. I think we went quite deep for the amount of time that we spoke. I want to warn listeners that there is some profanity in this episode, so please proceed accordingly. I also want to say that in this episode we talk a lot about the nature of suffering, as it relates to life, which I know can be a challenging topic for some. I want to elaborate here on what I said in my conversation with Daniel. Therein, I say that suffering can be good, and I want to reiterate, as I do in the episode, that that’s an oversimplification. What I meant by that is that I’ve been, perhaps, fortunate to be able to make meaning and find purpose as a result of some of the challenging things that have happened in my life. But I don’t necessarily think that suffering is a good thing, or that anyone is required to find meaning in the painful things that have happened in their lives. Hope that makes sense. And I want to thank Daniel again for having that conversation with me in real time, because I think it was an important thing for me to explore. In addition to talking about that, we also discuss the 9th House, especially as it relates to the Sun, and the mystery of fate, or destiny, or our life path, for lack of a better term.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Pisces Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the brilliant Cameron Cassidy.
We talk about the placement of his Moon in the 10th Whole Sign House, but we also talk about the many other things, such as how the challenges of having the Moon in such a prominent position, some of the differences between Mercurial and Jupiterian Risings, the Sect Light as the Predominator, or the life force of the native, the Master of the Nativity, dealing with malefics in the 1st House, theurgy, relational astrology, and fate, and Manilius’ poetry on Pisces and the Sea God Poseidon.
I also wanted to reiterate that I’ve recently launched a website for the podcast! There you can find information on all the episodes, as well as contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation. The website also has information on my services. I’m offering natal and horary consultations on a donation basis, as well as transcription, captioning, and audio editing. I want to extend a big thank you to Jared, who’s @leapingfish_ on Twitter, and Nathaniel Hodder-Shipp for becoming members at the Gruyère tier. As part of their membership, they will receive a sneak-peek of next season’s guests and have the opportunity to contribute questions to those conversations. Thank you both again for your generous support!

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Pisces Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the one and only Claire Moon.
We talk about the placement of her Moon in the 2nd Whole Sign House, but we also talk about the many other things, such as about how the mutable quadruplicity relates to dance and creativity, the emotional gifts and challenges that can come with having the Moon in such an expansive, changeable sign as Pisces, science and skepticism, science and spirituality, vipassana meditation, astrology as a caretaking profession, Venus in her own decan in Aquarius, the myth Aphrodite, Eros, and the Typhon, and what Sphere and Sundry materia we put on before our conversation.
In case you missed it, I recently launched a website for the podcast! There you can find information on all the episodes, as well as contribute to the podcast’s sustainability by becoming a supporting member or offering a one-time donation. Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Aquarius Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the amazing astrologer astrolojohn.
We talk about the placement of their Moon in the tropical 9th Whole Sign House, but we also talk about being bi-zodiacal, that is the benefit of using both Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs, and John’s student of both Jyotish and Hellenistic astrology.
Like the House System debate that has recently ensued again on Twitter, there is often conflict between those that use the Tropical Zodiac and those that use the Sidereal Zodiac. I hope this episode can show some ways in which they can be used together in constructive and informative, rather than oppositional, ways.
In addition, I also wanted to mention that I recently launched a website for the podcast, as well as my own services. If you enjoy this podcast, you can support this work by becoming a free or paid member, or offering a one-time donation. I want to give a shout-out to Diana Rose Harper for becoming my first paid member on the Manchego tier. Thank you so much for your support Diana.
In addition, I’ve started offering audio editing and transcription services, and will be working with the astrologer Ari Felix on editing their podcast ‘Mystery Loves Company.’ Check that out in the show notes, or wherever you listen to podcasts, and visit my website for more information.
But now for the wonderful conversation that I had with John. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the Moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Capricorn Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak with the very thoughtful, kind astrologer Ángeles Lopez, better known to most of you as Madame Anshelyk.
In this conversation, we talk about Ángeles’ Capricorn Moon in their 12th Whole Sign House, Buddhism and the nature of the self, and many other things. From dodekatemoria, to firdaria, to Platonism as a philosophical foundation for astrology, to a Mayan myth about the birth of the Sun and Moon.
And despite the fact that this conversation was recorded several weeks ago, we also touch a bit on the Saturn discourse that’s been making the rounds on social media, and the beneficence - or at least the necessity - of maleficence.
But we also get into some sensitive topics, so here is a bit of a trigger warning. In particular we talked about mental health challenges, suicidality, death, and the use of plant-based medicines or entheogens.
So if those are sensitive subjects for you, I would proceed with that in mind.
In addition, I also wanted to mention what the recent Mars station has been teaching me about my capacities, my capabilities, and how I need to proceed with this podcast. Given my available time and resources right now, providing transcription for my podcast episodes is something that’s not possible at the moment with any expediency.
I’m sorry for over-promising and under-delivering on this, and to all those that makes the show less accessible. Hopefully, in the future I’ll be able to figure out a way to ensure that accessibility tool is available, as accessibility is an important issue to me.
With that said, I want to give a shoutout to Jose, who is @smalldogstar on Twitter, for volunteering to transcribe E.Y. Washington’s episode sometime soon. I really appreciated that offer, so keep an eye out for that transcript soon.
But now for the wonderful conversation that I had with Ángeles. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Capricorn Moon as the Sect Light I speak with the brilliant astrologer E.Y. Washington.
In this conversation, we talk about E.Y.’s Capricorn Moon in their 4th Whole Sign House, a lot more about their chart, and many other things. From Queerness and Failure, to growing laterally like a sentence, to Batman and Catwoman and the grayness of the 7th House, to the story of Cinderella.
But we also get into some sensitive topics, so here is a bit of a trigger warning. In particular we talked about food, issues of gender and race, and we touch briefly on the topic of violence and infanticide.
So if those are sensitive subjects for you, I would proceed with that in mind.
In addition, I also wanted to mention that I’m opening my books to receive donation-based, student-astrologer horary questions and 60-minute natal chart readings. I recently received my Certificate of Completion in my Horary Class with Chris Brennan and Rob Bailey, and as you will hear in this episode I’ve done a few natal chart consultations at this point as well. But I want to reiterate that I’m still a student astrologer and am receiving inquiries to learn and grow in my studies. I’m planning to launch a website as a home for the podcast, and to provide more information about my practice, once Mercury stations direct later this month, but for now you can get more information by emailing me at sphallhorary@gmail.com, which is also included in the show notes.
But now for the main event, the wonderful conversation that I had with E.Y. I’m really excited to share it with you.

Hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Sagittarius Moon as the Luminary Out of Sect I speak to the wonderful, talented, prolific astrologer Diana Rose Harper. In this conversation, we talk about both of our Sag Moons, and also talk about a lot more. From the differences in our Jupiter in Cancer placements, to the Antiscia relationship between Capricorn and Sagittarius, and also the myth of Artemis and Actaeon.
But we also get into some sensitive topics, so here is a bit of a trigger warning. In particular we talked about food and challenges related to food.
So if those are sensitive subjects for you, I would proceed with that in mind.
Before we dive into the conversation, I wanted to apologize to those waiting on the written transcript for Episode 1. It’s important to me that I make these conversations as accessible as possible, and I’m planning to have the transcripts for both Episode 1 and 2 within the next couple of weeks.
Also in reference to accessibility, I edited this episode in, I think, significantly different ways from Episode 1. As someone with auditory sensitivity, I view that podcast editing as an accessibility issue as well.
With that in mind, I would appreciate feedback on the work I’m doing here, especially from those that also have auditory sensitivities, so that I can make this podcast the best that it can be.
But Diana and I had a great conversation, and I’m really grateful to her for taking the time to share her experience with me. Please, be sure to check out the link to Diana’s website below, as well as links to some of the resources that we touch on in our conversation.
Hope you enjoy it.

Hi, and welcome to the 'Luminaries In and Out of Sect' podcast, a show about the moon and how astrologers embody and relate to it. My name is SP Hall and I'm your host.
In today’s episode on the Sagittarius Moon as the Sect Light I speak to my friend, the astrologer Erin Tack Shipley.
In this conversation, we talk about both of our Sag Moons, and also talk about a lot more. From our Jupiter’s in the 8th House of our charts, to Leonian nature, to planetary joys, and myths about the Moon.
But we also get into some heavier topics, so here is a bit of a trigger warning. We discuss such topics as death, death-phobia, and grief. We talk about appropriation, and colonization, and potential challenges in reimagining myth in our time.
So if these are sensitive subjects for you, I would proceed with that in mind. I also want to reiterate that I’m a student astrologer, not a professional astrologer, definitely not an expert, and that I still have a lot to learn. I hope that you can receive what I say in this episode with the understanding that I’m in a state of flux, learning, and growth, and that I might get it wrong from time to time.
But I think Erin and I had a very rich, free-flowing conversation, and I’m excited to share it with you today.
