Even the healthiest families still have problems. No parent is perfect. What we learn in our family we practice later in life. Our family of origin goes a long way to inform who we become.
When I am hurt how do I come back to myself? Some of us have those skills and some of us don't. Jesus actually taught his disciples how to recover themselves. You can only learn those things in the context of community. When we wrestle with wounds of abandonment we tend to go into enemy. When someone has hurt me, I turn them in to an enemy. But Jesus gave us a different way.

Moments with God become less about us and more about Him. When God comes to us He reveals Himself, it is about Him. The central event of Scripture is the revelation of God. God does the saving, speaking and revealing. Our responsibilty is to respond to Him. And oh, how great that response is. And oh, how lovely He reveals Himself to be. And oh, how majestic He becomes to us.

Christianity is not just a worldview that you adopt one day because conveniently it looks good to you. Its not like your "Get Out of Jail Free" card. You don't just join this sect of people and you won't go to hell anymore. Here's the card. Just hold on to it until the end.
Christianity's not even really a religion. It's not a codified set of doctrines and beliefs that dictate how you live the course of your life in this world. I derive a whole new worldview, not because I decide to move from this worldview to that worldview, but because the Father came and planted Himself in me.
It started with the testimony amongst twelve people. Then it proliferated and proliferated one person to another, then to another and another. The radical spread in the first 400 years of Christianity was person to person. It was one person's redemption, to another person's redemption, to another person's redemption.
The story of Christianity is God revealing himself. And the nature of revelation is that it creates internal pressure that's uncomfortable. It lodges something deep within you that you will need to work out. It creates pressure against all the ways that you see the world and yourself. This pressure builds up and it mounts and it can drive you absolutely crazy.
But that's the whole point because it won't let you go. The Father won't let you go.

Do you know Christ or do you just know how to act like a Christian? There is a vast chasm between the two. Any citizen of a western country can sneeze and fulfill 7 of the 10 commandments. But rule following does not a mature Christian make. We can have a form of godliness but deny the desire of God to powerfully encounter his people. If we do this then we can just say words and salvation happens. The plague of humanity is forgetting who God is. God desires to encounter his people and the ways he does this are multifaceted. The path to true healing is the path of encounter. Tune in as Josh dives deep and shows how the path of Christianity is a path of encountering the heart of God and being forever transformed.

What happens to us when we see Jesus as He is? What teaches us to respond to His presence? Our culture? Our religious upbringing? Our skills? When Peter sees the glory of God and the law and the prophets he immediately attempts to put a plan into action, he tries to respond. The proper response in hindsight was to sit in silence and listen, not to pontificate, but that is what we tend to do. When we catch a sight of the glory of God we want to do something about it, but often we need direction, instruction, and formation. We are to simply wait and listen. "A young boy who is berated and beaten by his father learns the valuable lesson that he is the problem. Its a valuable lesson because it becomes the value of his life. The value of his life is that my father doesn't love me, I'm a danger, and I'm unlovely. Then the easiest assumption to make is that the Heavenly Father doesn't love him. But it's not his fault and he never had anyone to tell him that. At least not as a young boy."

God does not divorce your identity from your history. We separate our identity from our history making us less than real persons. We think of ourselves esoterically or in broad labels. We label ourselves as courageous, fearful, peaceful, or loving and never even consider the compilation of memories and events that have made us the people we are today. God does not think of you in generalities, but longs ot engage with your story and forge His goodness within you.

With the ongoing death of cultural Christianity, what does it look like to become the people of God? What does it mean to have our identity formed and healed?
Ephesians 2:1-5 "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)."
The culture that we grow up in (the course of this world) and the spirit of this age (the prince of the power of the air) have informed the people that we have become.
