Ever had a season where your marriage feels more like a team meeting? In this episode of Hope in the Hard of Family Life, Alicia is joined by her husband, Cary, for an honest conversation about a full, prolonged season of work, ministry, coaching, kids, and nonstop logistics. They talk about the exhaustion and disconnection that can come when you're both running on fumes—and how easy it is to become more like roommates or teammates than spouses. Alicia and Cary share the small, intentional ways they worked to stay connected, from communication and everyday acts of love to learning that your spouse is a gift, not your source. They also reflect on how God used this season to deepen their dependence on Him and strengthen their marriage. If you're in a season where you're surviving more than thriving, this conversation is for you.

Drawing from Proverbs 3:5-6, we’ll talk about the two paths we can take: leaning on our own understanding or trusting fully in the Lord. You’ll hear what trust looks like in a practical sense, why it often means letting go of control, and how God’s plans are always higher and holier than ours.

Throughout scripture, Jesus never minced his words on the call to forgive. Yet forgiveness can be one of the hardest things for believers to extend especially in situations of abuse, trauma, or deep betrayal. In the season 4 finale, Abby and Alicia discuss perspectives on forgiveness rooted in Matthew 18 that enable us to let go of bitterness and resentment and step into forgiveness. This conversation offers wisdom surrounding the call to forgiveness, both what it is and what it isn't, and sheds light on the truth that the call to forgiveness is much more about the freedom and healing for the offended rather than the offender.

As humans, we all share the same intrinsic need to feel loved, accepted, and secure. Unfortunately as we navigate a broken world, we develop deep-seeded fears of being abandoned, unlovable, and unworthy. As a result, we put on a mask to help hide insecurities, imperfections, and fears. The problem with masks is that they are not representative of who we truly are. In this episode, Abby and Alicia address the reasons why we put on masks, the various forms masks take, and how to remove the masks which can be so exhausting. This conversation offers encouragement and practical ways to live from our true identity that is rooted in Jesus instead of a false self that we must strive to maintain.

Abby and Alicia wrap up the Tweens and Tweens series with a conversation about important aspects of communication, discipline, and conflict resolution during the teenage years. The teenage years are an opportunity to allow your child to practice what they have been taught before leaving the "nest." Therefore, Abby and Alicia discuss creating a safe environment for teenagers to learn and grow from their successes and failures. The teenage years will inevitably bring up conflict as teens learn to navigate life more independently, so Abby shares her wisdom on how communication and discipline should foster a secure environment that teaches independence instead of destroying it.

Christians are taught that sex is a good and holy act created by God to be shared within the confines of marriage. Sex is meant to celebrate the intimacy and connection between a husband and a wife. However, what is often not discussed are the disconnects, challenges, and other nuances that can leave couples feeling like the issue of sex is anything but good. In part 1 of this three-part series on sex and intimacy in marriage, Alicia and Abby begin this much-needed discussion by taking the biblical principles concerning sex and intimacy and helping understand the various aspects contributing to good sex and intimate connection. They talk about what it looks like to shepherd your spouse's heart, the 3 parts to a relationship, and types of intimacy, and candidly address dynamics that could contribute to disconnects in the marriage relationship. Due to the mature subject matter, this is probably not an episode you want to listen to with children around but is definitely a life-giving and encouraging conversation.

According to scripture, marriage was created in Genesis 2 when man and woman were in perfect community with each other and with God. After the fall of man in Genesis 3, initmacy was replaced with incompatibility and trust was replaced with distrust within the relationship of marriage. Over the next two episodes, Alicia sits down with Dr. Lance Bourgeois, head pastor of Grace Church in Wichita Falls, TX, to discuss the hope of having a Genesis 2 marriage in a Genesis 3 world. In this episode, Alicia and Lance begin the process of diving into common "trigger" words when it comes to marriage, and how the original context of words like, "helper" and "head of household" are actually life giving terms as opposed to terms that constrict or devalue the roles of husband and wife.

Understanding your child's heart plays a vital role in a parent's ability to love and parent their child well. It is critically important because our hearts are the very center of our inner life, and the initiation force behind all functions of soul and spirit. When parents fail to understand the heart of their child it can lead to false belief systems. Join Abby and Alicia for the second part of The Heart of Parenting series as they discuss the importance of understanding the 4 intrinsic needs of your child's heart and how to better parent based on those needs.

When it comes to parenting, there are many passages in scripture that drop nuggets of wisdom into the laps of parents but leave little instruction as to how to walk those scriptures out. Even more, every child is different so no set of "steps" works for every child. That's why this Heart of Parenting series looks to take a relational approach to parenting that helps parents understand the unique heart of their child, and equips parents with godly, foundational principles that can help create the culture of Christ in their home. Join Alicia and Abby over the next four episodes as they discuss topics like the role of parenting, discipline, heart-felt communication and conflict resolution.

In this last episode of our Marriage: Broken Together series, Abby and Alicia wrap up the question of living broken together with a discussion on the difference between walking in God's love versus simply knowing about it. We use the word "love" in so many different contexts. This episode breaks down the different types of love and focuses in on God's redemptive love, which is the type of love that truly allows us to live broken together.

Part three of "Marriage: Broken Together" offers hope in the hard of hurt and unmet expectations in marriage. Instead of 7 steps or a bunch of "how to's," Alicia and Abby discuss perspectives and attitudes that foster healing, heart change, and true transformation for not only the individual spouse, but the marriage itself. This conversation offers much more than behavior modification for your marriage, but rather looks at how the person of Jesus and his redemptive love offers a path to becoming selfless and extending grace in marriage.

In part two of our marriage series, "Marriage: Broken Together," Alicia and Abby will be talking about God's purpose for marriage. Even with all the bible verses we may know about God's purpose for marriage, this conversation will look at the subtle but detrimental shifts in our thinking about marriage. Alicia and Abby will candidly address the way our own selfishness can lead us into a contract marriage mindset vs. the covenant marriage mindset that Christ desires.
