A space where horsewomen can come together and talk about all the things. Anything goes from relationships, horse training, to fitness and health for the rider.
We will drop some tidbits along the way on how to increase your health and riding through fitness and nutrition and talk you through common training issues that come up with our client and personal horses.
Many times if you hear someone say, “Accept your limitations” it comes from the perspective of a pessimist or someone who doesn’t think you should ever change or that you can never be something more than you are right now.
Today, I take a slightly different stance. Accepting your limitations can be the first step that you need to start you on the road to confidence and success in any avenue you choose. It gives you the base upon which you can build your staircase to higher levels.
I also speak on the horse side of things, and how we can accept our horse’s limitations so that our horse can trust our ability to help them learn new skills and build their stamina in a way that builds them up and doesn’t break them down.
Limitations are only current, and dreams can be achieved. So don’t ever think that accepting your limitations means never growing. It just means that you are 100% clear on what your starting point is.
Dream big, my friends!
~Camri

Today we chat a bit about Freya getting her first set of shoes in two years, and how the end of Freya’s barefoot journey played head games with Camri. Neither barefoot or shod means failure in a hoofcare journey. Trying to keep to one “camp” without regard for the comfort and soundness of the horse is not helpful for the horse. Keeping our horse as sound and comfortable as possible for the short and long term can mean changing the plan when needed, and continually re-evaluating.
We also discuss McKayla’s upcoming move to Washington state. Her husband recently finished his masters program and got a new job. So many exciting changes are ahead! Phases of life for horses and humans are normal, and change is good. Change forces us to take stock of what we have, make plans for the future, and helps us get out of our comfort zones in so many good ways.

After seeing multiple horses die in various competitions this week, we broach the topic of when competition becomes abuse, and can competing be done ethically? On one extreme of the debate, horses die from heat exhaustion, get arthritis before they are fully grown, are forced into rollkur, and have whip and spur marks on their bodies to get them to perform. On the other extreme of this debate, we have the idea that horses should never be put into stressful situations at all. In the middle, we find a place where we can stay partner-focused throughout competition, and make decisions based on the welfare of ourselves and our horses.
Competition naturally brings out our desire to win, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as long as we take the right steps to get there. We need to make decisions that benefit us and our horse as a team – both physically and mentally. When winning overrides safety and ethics, we need to take a closer look inward and fix things within ourselves and within the organizations that we are a part of.
Competition can absolutely be a beneficial thing to help us and our horses challenge ourselves and enjoy the time we spend together. When we embrace progress over perfection, we can slow down when needed, take the disqualification, scratch our class, and do right by our horse.

In this solo episode, I share the intense experience of completing my first 50-mile ride with Sandy. Despite our thorough preparation, the journey was mentally and physically grueling, filled with moments of doubt and reflection.
This experience has underscored the necessity of being kind to ourselves and recognizing the incredible efforts we put in as horsewomen. Let's navigate these challenges together.

We are excited to have Nick Hartog on the podcast today to talk all about equine gut health and ulcers!
If you've ever been confused on what supplements to buy or how to manage your horse's ulcers, this is the podcast for you!
If you like this episode be sure to leave us a 5 star review and subscribe to learn more about rider health and fitness, horse training dos and don'ts and everything else that comes with living an equestrian lifestyle!More About Nick:
In 1994, Nick Hartog became an owner and President of Grand Meadows Equine Supplements, bringing his talents and extensive background in domestic and international equine sales and manufacturing. He has a reputation for plain speaking of the truth. In 1997, when the U.S. horse supplement market was something akin to the Wild West with a complete lack of standards, Nick personally tested 32 different horse joint supplements to see if they matched the label. Unsurprisingly, to him at least, only 2 products matched the label claim.
At that point, Nick decided to do something about the systemic fraud that permeated the horse supplement industry by starting an organization called the National Association of Equine Supplement Manufacturers (NAESM). Holding meetings at trade shows and trying to galvanize other manufacturers to take action was a frustrating process as most companies were happy to continue with the market as it was. Slowly, over a period of four years, companies finally started to take note culminating in the formation of the National Animal Supplement Council (www.nasc.cc) in 2001.
NASC is a voluntary membership that requires supplement manufactures to comply with state, federal and international feed regulations. Grand Meadows has earned the highest rating with NASC for compliance with rigorous manufacturing GMP or Good Manufacturing Practices, including strict raw material testing, independent lab tests on all finished products, ensuring pure formulas that are consistent from the first scoop to the last.
Nick is adamant in keeping our high-quality level of standards in every aspect of the business: particularly with formulations that are clinically researched from the world’s most respected nutritionists, biochemists, veterinarians, for optimal nutrition and supplementation.

While the title may raise an eyebrow or two, rest assured, we're not here to talk about transforming our spouses into obedient subjects.
Instead, we explore how to empower ourselves to foster healthier dynamics within our partnerships and relationships.
There are so many parallels between our relationships with our partners and our work with our horses. The foundation of both is trust, understanding and connection. Without those, we don't have a leg to stand on.

Horsemanship has been on a positive trend of more kindness toward horses and more ethical practices. This is a very good trend! However, some folks have gotten to a point where they are a pushover with their horse and don't know how to say no or set boundaries.
Saying no and having boundaries with our horses is a wonderful thing that helps both parties feel safe and understood. McKayla and I chat with you in this episode about how to set these boundaries and what it means to use all of the quadrants of operant conditioning.
I hope you enjoy the episode!

Today McKayla shares with us about her first ever fall from her horse, Sandy. The last time she came off a horse was over 7 years ago. Sandy spooked at a culvert at the exact wrong moment that threw McKayla to the ground in an instant. We discuss some of the ways to manage spookiness, especially recurring spookiness to the same object.
Acceptance versus tolerance, shifting the perspective of what culverts mean, and managing the startle reflex are all tools we discuss to help any horse owner in a similar situation.

Today Camri hops on for a quick chat about heart coherence. Heart coherence is a state where you are in harmony physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and you are utilizing energy efficiently. It can be measured through heart rate variability (HRV).
By utilizing a technique called heart-focused breathing, you can bring more awareness to your heart, and to the present moment, while finding feelings of gratitude, love, and joy. Doing this technique will improve your heart coherence, and your ability to find peace and harmony within yourself.
I hope this is helpful!

Or maybe your horse bolts into their lope every time and can't relax at the lope. In today's episode, McKayla and Camri discuss ways to help a horse through their upward transitions, particularly the lope (or canter for any english folks out there ;)).

Recently, Camri had a Facebook post go viral which had a photo of a sign that stated this:
NOTICE!
This property is a farm!
Farm animals:
Make noise, smell bad, and have sex outdoors.
Unless you can tolerate noise, odors, and outdoor sex,
Don't buy property next to a farm!
This post brought out a lot of animosity between farmers/livestock owners and city folks or non-livestock owners. McKayla and Camri discuss how to handle a situation where you either have livestock in the city, or if a development moves in near your farm/property. Much of what we discuss has to do with frontloading with kindness, establishing clear communication, educating and not vilifying, and more.

McKayla focused on extreme ownership, while I focused on an African word, "Sawubona", which means "I see you." Each of us were able to learn things throughout the year that helped us in our daily lives.
Then we dive into our focuses for this year. Listen to this episode to hear about what we chose to focus on for 2024!

Merry Christmas from Camri and McKayla!
Today we talk about what a typical day looks like for each of us with horses. Mckayla covers what the life of a more typical horsewoman looks like caring for two horses and goes into exactly what she feeds, how long it takes, and how much it costs per day to have her horses.
Then Camri discusses the day in the life of a horse trainer with many more horses under her belt.
Biggest takeaway: the time, money, and energy it takes to care for horses will depend greatly on what you choose to do with them and the current setup you have.

Today, McKayla and I dive into Libbie Zenger’s experiences with what she calls mid-life horsewomanship. She describes what it’s like dealing with the fear of trying something new, as she gentled and started her first horse at the age of 42. She shares so many golden nuggets of wisdom and how she hasn’t let victory or defeat define her. We hope you enjoy her story as much as we did!

In Episode #56 McKayla and I discussed items to have in our bags, ways to stay safe, apps that can help people track us, and so much more. This week, in episode#58, we dive into what it takes to prepare your horse to go out alone.
Horses are naturally a herd animal, and it is normal for them to want to be with other horses. There are so many ways to help our horses with separation anxiety and help them in their confidence, both in the arena and on the trail.
Join McKayla and I today for a great discussion!

Today McKayla and I discuss ways to prepare for riding out alone. We share everything from what to put in your backpack/bag, apps to use, precautions to take, and so much more!
Riding out alone isn't an easy task. It can be risky if you don't have a horse you can trust, or even if you do. You always want to make sure you are prepared for having to stay alone a night on a mountain, and have supplies to help you and your horse if you get in a tight spot or have a medical emergency. Not to mention the prep that your horse needs, which we will dive into more in our next episode, where we will discuss dealing with separation anxiety and other things you need to work on with your horse BEFORE you ride out alone.

It can seem daunting trying to find that unicorn you are on the hunt for when there are so many horses on the market! How do you find the right horse? McKayla and I have both helped clients with horse shopping, and we love to help people find the right fit at the right price. This episode covers many of the things we look for in horse advertisements, as well as some translations of common phrases or terms used in advertisements. We also go over the red flags to watch for that may indicate a scammer or dishonest seller, what questions to ask the seller, what to look for in videos, and more!

Today McKayla and I discuss how horses change with the weather, their herd situation, their type of feed, their exercise/turnout schedule, and more. As fall and winter approach, many of us see horses become more spooky, and might even see horse-kites on the end of our lead rope. We go over some of the why's behind the ways horses change, as well as how to make the change easier.

Most of us horsefolk have seen or dealt with horses that hit the end of their lead rope and thrash, sometimes breaking trailers, halters, lead ropes, and/or themselves. Today, McKayla and I discuss some ways to help the horses that have learned this behavior, as well as how to prevent hanging back from ever happening in the first place.

Our views about stress, taking ownership in what we choose to struggle for, and using tools like meditation, breathwork, and physical activity are all ways to help us manage the stress we have in our lives and not let it overtake us and become unmanageable.

McKayla tells us all about what she has learned in her first 25 mile endurance ride with her mare, Sandy, as well as what she learned in her 50 mile ride on her friend’s horse. The endurance world has many amazing things to it, one big thing being how much they consider the welfare of the horse.

Camri tells us all about her clinic she held recently in Herriman, Utah. Many ah-ha moments were had, from ground-tying an entire group of horses, to trailer loading, allowing horses to get the answer wrong without us escalating, and changing the way we present things to our horses.

McKayla and I discuss how, for years, we believed that we needed to drive our heels down while riding. Recently, we have both began the process of undoing this in our riding. We discuss how, when we drive the heels down, it makes us brace our entire leg, and also takes the "spring" action out of our ankle joints. We also discuss the implications for our upper body position when we drive the heels down so hard.

In this episode, McKayla and Camri discuss the first thing you need to consider when buying your first horse: budgeting. Between hay, vaccinations, dewormers, veterinary bills, farriers, and the like, horses can become quite the expensive venture. We also touch on the topics of time commitment, exercise needs of your horse, and travel considerations.
For your convenience, we have included a budgeting sheet for you to download that goes along with this episode that will help you easily be able to estimate what the costs are to own a horse in your area.

Today we talk about Camri’s mini-mule Kevin, and how her process with Kevin has shifted from taking it 100% at his pace, to speeding up the training process a little. The perspectives of mules being stubborn, hard to train, and that they never forget made Camri question if she was truly being fair in pushing Kevin out of his comfort zone when being caught, but she came to realize that mules are not much different than horses. We discuss how progress doesn’t happen in our comfort zone, and there are ethical and safe ways to help a horse or mule through discomfort and to show them that they can find comfort, peace, and consistency with a human.
We also dive into how corrections are not a bad thing, and that corrections can - and should - be given in certain situations. Without boundaries with horses, we can get into some pretty dicey situations. Teaching and guidance should always be the first and best way for us to shape a horse’s behavior, but when horses cross boundaries, we need to enforce those to keep us safe, and to stay consistent in what we expect of our horses.

Jade Savage joins McKayla and I today as we discuss a little about Jade's story. She is a mother of two young boys, an occupational therapist, a 4H coach, a doula, and a birth photographer. She is a woman of all trades! Jade share's a bit about her younger years and how she got to where she is now. She now runs her own photography business, Jade Savage Photography where she does birth, wedding, and rodeo photography. Through photographing births, and also through her own birth experiences with her boys, Jade was drawn to become a doula -- a woman who is hired to provide support, guidance, and a voice for a woman during labor and delivery. Jade shares so much about her role as a doula and how she helps women have a positive birth experience, regardless of c-section, epidural, or natural labor. Jade has so much to share, and we plan to bring her on again to discuss more about her role as a photographer!

This week we give a little update on Kevin the mini-mule and how Camri is changing the dynamic of the catching routine. If we focus on a relationship before we start demanding things of each other, it leads to a more fulfilling relationship, as well as more willingness to respond to our demands later on.
We discuss how taking ownership of our decisions in our life gives us the power to make the changes we need to make. Many times humans talk about how we can’t change our situation, or how we are forced into the situation we are in, and bad things are happening to us. But is there really a “can’t”? Or are we just blaming the world, our spouse, our friend, or our horse? If we take ownership of the choices we made that got us to where we are, then we can be content in the life that we have chosen. We can accept the good with the bad, knowing we aren’t stuck, but that we chose this, and we can continue to choose this. Or we can make new choices that shape a new life.
As we make new choices, we need to remember that slow progress is the best progress. It will last longer and be more meaningful if we take the time it takes to learn through the process and grow as a person, spouse, business owner, and friend.

Does 60 days make a broke horse? We don't think so.
McKayla and I discuss the things that we think make a broke horse.
This is what we think a broke horse is: A horse that responds consistently, and in many different situations.
60-90 day horses, no matter how gentle and sweet, simply do not have the exposure, trail miles, arena miles, hauling miles, and experience to be 100% reliable and consistent.
Join McKayla and I as we discuss different versions of "broke" horses, and some of our personal experiences that taught us what we have learned.

This week we discuss trail etiquette and safety.
Trail riding is one of the most popular things to do with your horse, but there’s no courses teaching you the rights and wrongs of what to do with your horse on the trail. So here it is ;)
We go over things to consider when riding with a group and by yourself.
We talk about things to be aware of if you aren’t a rider and go over some important safety measures to think about in all scenarios.
We hope you enjoy, and share with someone who needs to hear it! And as always, we would love it if you left us a 5 star rating if you enjoy listening!

McKayla here!
This week Camri acts as part of a panel with our guests McKynzi Short and Lisa Muscarella. I've been excited about this panel for a long time, as I do not have kids and it's an ever-evolving conversation in my household as I try and fathom how I could possibly handle a child while still being able to keep up with the goals I have for myself and my horses.
McKynzi Short is a mom of an adorable toddler and a close friend of both Camri and me. She is a Brand Inspector for the state of Utah as well as a colt starter and cow horse trainer. She has long been someone I have looked up to while watching her balance her busy life with her son.
Lisa Muscarella is a mom of two boys who are both in their twenties. She provides valuable insights into how she made it work without a support system, and how she was able to make her passion for horses work even while living in New York and raising two young kids.
If you've been listening to this podcast you already know Camri, who is normally my co-host but today is acting as a valuable member of the panel. She is a mom of two cute kids who are 6 and 8 years old. She has been running her own business as a colt starter for over 9 years and has managed to balance raising her kids and growing her business.
Join me as I ask all the questions about how these women make horses and motherhood work, about the struggles, the wins, and some fun tips and strategies they've used over the years!

In this episode, we discuss how we deal with a loss of confidence in our riding, and/or a fear of horses. Every horse person at one time or another in their life, will have to deal with a situation with horses that strikes a bit of fear, anxiety, or uncertainty. When this happens, we can choose to leave the horse industry altogether. But seeing as this is The Horsewoman Project, we figure most of you listeners want to work through the fear and gain back your confidence! McKayla and I discuss how we have overcome our own fears, as well as how we have taught our students to overcome their own fear or loss of confidence.
McKayla once owned a riding lesson business called Harnessing Confidence, which was based solely around the idea of helping kids and adults gain more confidence with their equine partners. She has a very amazing process of how she builds trust with her students so that she can really help them learn to be confident on and around horses.
Camri's fear around horses has been overcome again and again, as she has been kicked in the head, thrown over fences, bucked off, and more. She talks about how more knowledge and proper preparation help her stay out of a state of anxiety and fear, and more in a state of being present and focused on the horse in front of her.

This week we talk about track systems, handling anxiety in you and your horse, and when to set boundaries.
We get an update on how McKayla has handled her anxiety with her mare and talk about how she's found she's allowed her boundaries to fall and that has created a lot of the issues she's been noticing.
Then we dive into track systems.
Track systems have been an important part of McKayla's horse management system for the last 3 years. We talk about how she got into track systems to help rehab her horse who was diagnosed with Navicular and had calcified ligaments in his pasterns.
We go over how she made it work in a small space, the pros and cons of the system and how Camri has dabbled in some of the ideas with her mare, Freya’s stall.

This episode is part 2 of our Emotional Control episode. We already dove into the human aspect, and now we are going into the horse aspect. When this episode was recorded, it was the week of Camri's late mother's birthday. We talk about how anniversaries and certain dates can be hard. We discuss the winter blues, ice baths, intense hunger, and how taking control over our responses to things can empower us to move through difficulties. When we ask our horses to have emotional control, are we asking them to process things, or to simply shut down? We discuss how to use familiarizing, focus work, and connection work to help your horse deal with the scary "tigers" they may come across in our human world.

This episode took a turn we weren't expecting, but we think it evolved the way it was meant to. We began discussing what it's like having a horse-y vs. a non-horse-y husband as a horsewoman. The conversation evolved into discussing our journeys through mixed-faith marriages, and what we have learned along the way. McKayla and I both grew up as members of the LDS church (the mormon church), and are both navigating our own journeys inside and outside of the church.

McKayla shares a few things she learned from a Mastermind she recently attended about growing your business. Then we dive into the difficult question of, when is your horse in pain and when is it just a bad behavior? McKayla and Camri discuss how to check for pain, how to differentiate between pain and behavior problems, and how to resolve behavioral issues that stem from pain. Camri discusses moving through the trauma of getting kicked in the head by a horse.

Loving yourself doesn’t mean you don’t still want, need, or strive for change. And just because you want to grow, doesn't mean you don't love where you've been and where you are.

We check in with each other after Christmas week and talk about what fitness means to us. Then we debunk some common fitness myths like how to spot reduce fat, the difficulties of dieting, adding and subtracting calories when you track, and is 10,000 steps really a good goal for everyone?

What exactly is positive reinforcement? Is negative reinforcement a bad thing? Can the two be used together, or are they mutually exclusive? We answer these questions and discuss how shifting from strictly pressure and release (negative reinforcement), to using a little R+ (positive reinforcement) has helped us find more willingness in our equines and how much fun the "Yes" is. McKayla and Camri have only started diving into positive reinforcement within the last couple years, so if you have a deeper insight into positive reinforcement or blending R+ and R-, please email us at the link below and we can bring you on the podcast for an interview.Links:‘Loving what is’ by Byron Katie (We mistakenly refer to it in the episode as "The Work"): https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/9762.Loving_What_IsDisclaimer on this book: Camri doesn't like it in relation to trauma. Crazy adventures with dump trucks and screaming chickens. We go into one of our favorite topics: Energy work! Camri began as a bit of a skeptic with the "woo-woo", and she discusses the books that helped her fully embrace the "woo." McKayla shares with us how she was introduced to using energy with horses from a very young age. We share the connection between the science and the woo, and we challenge the idea of, "If you get bucked off, you have to get back on!" We go through letting go of our ego and having Compassion, using Communication vs control, and how Connection is the holy grail of horsemanship.Disclaimer We have better microphones within the next couple episodes, so stick with us through the glitches ;)**Links:The Heartmath Institute: https://www.heartmath.org/Book: The Heartmath Solution -- https://store.heartmath.com/the-heartmath-solution/Book: Sacred Spaces by Susan Fay: https://www.drsusanfay.com/Book: Evidence Based Horsemanship: https://evidence-basedhorsemanship.com/Buck Brannaman: https://brannaman.com/Mark Rashid: https://www.markrashid.com/Ray HuntWarwick Schiller: https://www.warwickschiller.com/Cesar Millan: https://www.cesarsway.com/Gareth Mare: https://www.facebook.com/HeartfeltPerformanceHorsemanship/...Email us at thehorsewomanproject@gmail.com.Get a hold of McKayla atEmail: mak.athletes@gmail.comWebsite: www.makathletes.comInstagram: @mckayla_lymanFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/mckayla.mecham.5.Get a hold of Camri atEmail: jfamilyequine@gmail.comWebsite: www.utahhorsetraining.comInstagram: @jfamilyequineFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jfamilyequine--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-horsewoman-project/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-horsewoman-project/support

We talk about our past experiences of goal setting and what we have found to be the most successful ways to set targets in our lives that are realistic and attainable, but also make us want to throw up a little ;).
