We all have limiting beliefs that hinder us from pursuing what we truly want. However, identifying these beliefs can help us prevent a toxic mindset.
In this episode, let's delve into some common limiting beliefs prevalent in teaching. When held by teachers, these beliefs can hinder their personal and professional growth. Here are a few limiting beliefs often encountered in the teaching profession:
I recommend exploring EP Limiting Beliefs Worksheet if you hold these limiting beliefs. This resource will help you delve deeper into your beliefs and question their validity. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be an excellent tool to utilize. CBT identifies and addresses distorted thoughts through various techniques. In my coaching program, I offer personalized guidance on CBT, allowing for a more in-depth exploration tailored to your specific needs.
Using the worksheet, you will be prompted to examine whether these beliefs are based on truth or simply fabrications. This self-reflection process will enable you to challenge and replace negative thought patterns with more realistic and positive ones. It empowers teachers to question their assumptions and self-imposed limitations, fostering personal and professional growth.

The worldwide literacy issue continues to afflict a significant number of the population, making it difficult for them to read and interpret written material. Individuals with dyslexia experience even more difficulty learning to read in this situation, underlining the critical need for customized treatments and support to address this specific learning difference and promote literacy for all.
Jennifer Ford Knopf, the founding director of the REED Charitable Foundation, has a remarkable background in supporting and training teachers to enhance their ability to teach children to read effectively. With a deep-rooted passion for education and a strong focus on literacy, she has dedicated her efforts to making a difference in the lives of dyslexic students and their educational journey. The driving force behind Jennifer's tireless work is her son, Reed, who faced and conquered numerous challenges associated with dyslexia. Inspired by his remarkable resilience and determination, Jennifer embarked on a mission to establish the REED Charitable Foundation, with the primary goal of supporting dyslexic students and ensuring they receive the education they deserve.

About Jennifer Ford Knopf
Jen is the Founding Director of REED Charitable Foundation, wife to husband Andrew and mom to two amazing kids – a daughter, Mackenzie, and a son, Reed (who was diagnosed with dyslexia in January of 2018 at seven years old). Of course, her son Reed’s story of both struggle and strengths is the inspiration for REED Charitable Foundation (“RCF”) but her heart for RCF goes much deeper than that.
Jen’s background as both a litigation and commercial real estate attorney made her uniquely suited for researching and advocating for her own son’s needs – but she quickly learned that their family’s battle to find support for her son is a battle at least 20% of the population also faces. Jen also learned that even with personal resources, there is very little legitimate support for dyslexic students – even though we absolutely know how to support them. And, the worst realization of all was the lingering question of “What happens to all of those families and children with no resources at all?” Jen knew the answer and also knew it was only a matter of time before she joined with others to create a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting not only dyslexic students but literacy for all.
With a strong legal background, relentless determination and a steadfast belief that literacy is a fundamental human right – Jen is committed to the mission and purpose of this foundation named after her beloved son.

If we don't reflect on our core values and understand why we do what we do, then we won't have the motivation to stick to a job or career that we've chosen. It's perfectly acceptable to keep your personal and work life separate; boundaries help. However, in teacher school or culture, lines may get blurred, and this is where toxic mindsets and habits begin to creep in.
In today's episode, we will focus on the toxic teacher mindset. But first, let me ask you: Do you feel guilty about taking days off? Do you feel resentful when you're asked to do something you know you don't have time to do but still take on the task due to admin/peer pressure? Do you work around the clock with little to no self-care or time to do things you love? Are you angry that you aren't valued at work or treated like a professional?
If you said YES to all or most of those questions, then I have something I want you to put to good use. This journal is a resource to help you parse some things that may have happened last year or in prior years. This will help you understand how to shift from a toxic teacher mindset to a mindful, positive Teacherpreneur mindset.

Many people are often unaware of the existence and significance of their higher self. Understanding and connecting with one's higher self can be fundamental when caring for a child with dyslexia, as it can provide a source of guidance, intuition, and empathy that significantly enhances the child's support and well-being.
Morganne Owens, a licensed school psychologist, therapist, and coach who helps people self-actualize, shares that her love for helping people heal has profoundly impacted her. This love enables her to approach her endeavors with empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in people's lives. She emphasizes the crucial role of self-care and self-compassion for moms to better care for their dyslexic children. Seeking a supportive community and educating oneself about the child's needs can further boost confidence and empower moms on their caregiving journey.
Take the first step towards embracing your higher self and unlocking its potential to impact your child's life positively.

Knowing how the mind, body, heart, and Soul are connected, Morganne found ways to help curb anxiety, depression, and common occurrences, like trauma. Systems, intersectionality, communities, advocacy, the planet, healthful foods, the power of belief; and how all of these things are intimately interwoven in the dynamics of health became a reality to me. Morganne now teaches people how to elevate their consciousness, and change their frequency, so they can move towards self-actualization and truly have wellness, happiness, wholeness, and real life.

We often don't think about why we do what we do and keep going without much introspection. However, knowing your 'why' is a significant part of anything we do in life.
In this episode, we dig into genuinely understanding your 'why' and not simply going with the flow. Simon Sinek, an entrepreneur, invented something called the golden circle. He did a TedTalk in 2009 that explained this phenomenon, and after watching it, I understood why this was essential to building a business. I want to challenge you to think outside the box and consider your mission in life, your vision for where you want to be, and your core values. This all starts with being crystal clear on your 'why.' Your "why" is what will get you up every day, and it will keep you going through the not-so-good days.
As for me, my "why" is working with people who want to see a transformation in their lives, and that's what keeps me going. So, let me ask you a question, Why do you do what you do?

As a mother of two, an educator, and a neurodiverse adult, the principles that drive Think Dyslexia were inspired and created from all of those experiences. Let me introduce myself so we can get to know each other better.
Let's get the credentials out of the way first! I earned my Doctor of Education in Teaching, Learning, Leadership, & Curriculum from Northeastern University. I hold a dual master's in Special Education and Elementary Education from Syracuse University and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Syracuse University. I am a certified Orton-Gillingham trained practitioner through the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) and a certified Educational Therapist through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET). But most importantly, my passion for educating, advocating, and bringing awareness to dyslexia at the domestic and international levels began in the elementary classrooms of private schools serving students with language-based learning disabilities in 2011.
I have been a Special Educator for over a decade, and I chose the special education path due to my struggles in school growing up. I deeply understood the academic and social-emotional struggles of students who learned in a non-traditional setting and wanted to make an impact in my way.
In June 2022, I embarked on the entrepreneur journey and built Think Dyslexia LLC. While building my business, I partner with various education companies where I deliver training and professional development to teachers and administrators at the district level focusing on dyslexia awareness, dyslexia screening, and MTSS. I have worked with over 30 school districts at the national and international levels leading educators and leaders to success. I am excited to help you become the best version of yourself as a teacherpreneur in this journey. Join me every Monday for 15 minutes to learn more!

Part of the lack of awareness around dyslexia's special education is that it is a relatively new area of focus in many educational systems. Dyslexia was not widely recognized as a learning difference until the 20th century, and even today, many schools and educators are not fully equipped to identify and support dyslexic students.
Dean Bragonier is a dyslexic entrepreneur, advocate, and the founder of NoticeAbility Inc. He discovered he had dyslexia at age ten after years of struggling in school. With difficulty in reading, writing, and spelling, he often felt frustrated and misunderstood. After working for several years in the music industry, Bragonier focused on dyslexia advocacy. In 2015, he founded NoticeAbility to address the critical need for dyslexic students to access tools and resources to help them succeed in school and beyond. Through his work with NoticeAbility, he is making a difference in the lives of countless students and families impacted by dyslexia.
If you or someone you know is dyslexic, consider contacting organizations like NoticeAbility for tools and support to help dyslexic students succeed in school and beyond.
Highlights and Resources:
About Dean Bragonier
Dean Bragonier is the Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility Inc, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students with dyslexia identify their unique strengths and build self-esteem.
Shaped by the challenges associated with his dyslexia and after struggling through the traditional secondary education system, Dean became a diligent and successful college student who developed a true love of learning at Bates College. Upon graduation, Dean embraced his entrepreneurial instincts and acquired a small seasonal restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard Island that he transformed into a successful full-scale enterprise. It was through this endeavor that he was able to contextualize his years of laborious academic learning and discover the true gifts of his own dyslexic mind.
As a social entrepreneur, Dean has founded his own nonprofit organizations and served as board member and advisor to a number of others. NoticeAbility is the culmination of Dean’s passion for education and his conviction that the advantages of dyslexia far outweigh its associated challenges.

In Africa, the knowledge and awareness about dyslexia vary greatly depending on the region and the level of education and awareness in that area. Some countries, such as South Africa, Egypt, Ghana, and Nigeria, have established support systems and resources for individuals with dyslexia. In other parts of Africa, there is little to no awareness or understanding of dyslexia, and this may be due to limited education about learning disorders and cultural stigmatization.
Our guest, Rosalin Abigail Kyere-Nartey, sheds light on dyslexia in Ghana. While the country is one of the most progressive in Africa regarding recognizing the condition, there is still much work to be done regarding education and support for individuals with dyslexia. Rosalin shares her struggles with dyslexia for many years before finally being diagnosed. She faced challenges in school and her personal life, as her difficulties with reading and writing were often misunderstood or dismissed. Rosalin's story emphasizes the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of dyslexia in Ghana and throughout Africa. With more education and support, individuals with dyslexia can overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.
Let's raise awareness and support for individuals with dyslexia in Ghana and across Africa!

Dysgraphia is a specific learning disability that affects writing skills and can often be overlooked in schools. While it may not be as well-known as other learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia can significantly impact students' ability to express themselves through writing.
In this episode, I discuss the five accommodations for students with dysgraphia and how these can help students succeed in the classroom. Firstly, by asking what the objective is, educators can ensure that students with dysgraphia have equal access to education and are not hindered by their difficulties with writing. Planning ahead and proactively identifying students with dysgraphia in the classroom is crucial. This can involve reviewing their educational records and observing their writing skills during class activities. Additionally, creating a quality rubric that is clear, concise, and provides specific guidelines for evaluating the work of students with dysgraphia can help them understand expectations and standards. These accommodations collectively support students with dysgraphia in accessing education and showcasing their knowledge and skills to the best of their abilities.
Implement these accommodations to support students with dysgraphia and promote their success in the classroom!

Writing skills are integral to communication because they allow you to clearly and quickly communicate your message in written form. However, for individuals with motor dysgraphia, writing can be a challenging and frustrating experience, and it can significantly impact a person's ability to express themselves in writing.
In this episode, I discuss the different signs and symptoms of motor dysgraphia, such as difficulties in various aspects of writing, like letter formation, letter placement, and spacing. They may also need help controlling the pencil or pen, resulting in sloppy or illegible handwriting. Writing letters from the bottom up instead of the top down and using too many strokes or the wrong stroke order can also be expected for those with motor dysgraphia. But with proper support, individuals with motor dysgraphia can overcome these challenges and develop effective writing strategies.
Learn more about motor dysgraphia and empower them to express themselves effectively through improved writing skills!

Writing is essential in every person's life, as it is a complex task vital for our learning, and it is usually acquired in the early years of life. Becoming a strong writer takes time and needs to be taught explicitly. However, dysgraphia, a learning disorder in written expression, can present with different symptoms at different developmental stages.
In this episode, I discuss the signs and symptoms of linguistic dysgraphia in every developmental stage of a person, as it may vary at every stage. For grades K to two, a child may have trouble labeling pictures with a few words, or they will write sentences that are hard to understand. For grades three to five, they will need help with organization and content for different forms of writing, while middle schoolers might struggle with minor errors. However, it's important to note that dysgraphia is not related to intelligence, and individuals with dysgraphia may have strengths in other areas, such as verbal communication or problem-solving.
Listen to today's episode to learn more about the signs and symptoms of linguistic dysgraphia!

Dysgraphia is a neurological condition that affects writing abilities and fine motor skills. This condition of a student or a child leads them to struggle in putting their thoughts into words on paper. We all know that many school assignments involve writing, and Dysgraphia can cause problems for students in meeting the school's curriculum. The estimated occurrence of children with Dysgraphia in some form is 4-20% of the population.
In this episode, I talk about what Dysgraphia is and how it impacts a child's ability to write effectively and efficiently. I also discuss the primary signs and symptoms of Dysgraphia and the significance of educating ourselves about it, as it is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. Lastly, I shared the four types of Dysgraphia and what it looks like for children or adults.

The hesitation to certify that a child is "dyslexic" extends beyond the desire to avoid a term that may hurt children. Many schools across the country have long refused to use the term, allowing many to avoid providing special education services mandated by federal law. According to scores of interviews with parents, students, researchers, attorneys, and instructors around the country, many public schools fail to recognize kids with dyslexia and ignore their needs.
Candi Sellers, a teacher, parent and academic language therapist, and an Orton-Gillingham Fellow, shares about her profession and how she teaches her own child at home. She is highly invested in her children’s education and has a personal understanding of the challenges that parents of dyslexic children face. She also delves into what parents should look for in a practitioner and the importance of finding the right practitioner to work with. She also emphasizes that parents should look for someone who has specialized training in dyslexia and who takes a holistic approach to treatment.
Candi also stated how she individualizes therapy plans for each family as dyslexia is a complex condition that affects children in different ways, so it's important to tailor the treatment approach to each child's specific needs.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 students have dyslexia. In this episode, we’ll talk about how speech-language pathologists successfully diagnose and treat reading disorders and the book I co-authored - The SLP Guide to Dyslexia.
The fascinating field of Speech-Language Pathology is not well known. It is dedicated to improving the communication abilities of individuals with speech, language, and swallowing disorders. And it offers a wide range of opportunities for those interested in making a positive impact on people's lives.
Courtney Overton, a Speech-language pathologist and literacy specialist will share about her journey to becoming a speech language pathologist. Since it is a lesser-known field specially for people of color she will discuss the percentage of black speech pathologists and how SLP’s diagnose their patients. Courtney discusses how children can be diagnosed with dyslexia at an extremely young age and what steps parents should take to ensure their child receives appropriate care.

“Growth describes our D-cubed journey.” - Brandy
Schools measure intelligence through a child’s reading and writing ability. And many times, teachers are not educated enough about various learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, and they fail to address children’s needs properly. This is being experienced by many moms and kids in our school system, and one of them is my former client, Brandy.
Brandy is a mother of three children. She was first in denial that her middle child had dyslexia as it was not clear to her what the symptoms were. She also just took the observations and assessment of the teachers that her child is fine. She lacked the information and support about her child’s condition.
In this episode, Brandy shares how another mom who also has a kid with dyslexia helped her to get information and get an educational therapist for her child. She also shared how after changing schools, they got access to a support program for kids with dyslexia. Having dyslexia is not due to a lack of intelligence; it’s a lack of access to awareness, information, and support.
Be your child’s advocate and seek the support you need!

“Know what works for most kids; not just dyslexic kids”- Debbie
Having dyslexia running in your family can be challenging. Being a mom to a dyslexic kid is a whole other level.
Dr. Lauren and guest speaker Debbie Meyer, a member of the Dyslexia (Plus) in Public Schools Task, discussed the hardships of diagnosing kids with special needs. They also discussed how her son had been diagnosed with dyslexia without naming it. It’s no secret that finding equitable education for gifted children is challenging. That’s why Debbie took on her role as “Momvocate” for her dyslexic son and worked hard to get his educational support.
Debbie is a strong advocate and mom of a child with dyslexia. She fights tirelessly to dismantle the dyslexia-to-prison pipeline. Listen to Debbie's fierce story to fight for change.
