On this podcast, we’re going to have great conversations. Every week we’re going to dive into the gospels. Learning from Jesus through studying his words, encounters, and the way He walked out his mission. We will discover that there’s probably some tables in our lives that need to be flipped and not just our sake…but for the sake of others….For the sake of the Kingdom mission.
Welcome to the table!
Every week I'm being humbled by the Sermon on The Mount. In episode 17 of our series on Matthew, we're talking about our words. We can be so careless with our words. By Jesus' standard we can be careless enough to commit murder with them. In this episode Twila and I use Matthew 5:21-26 to examine our words. In the Sermon Jesus continues to raise the standard and step on our toes.

I had the pleasure of hosting my friend and leadership coach, Dr. Conrad Davies, at the table. Spending time with Dr. Davies is always a bright spot for me. He has a humble and gentle way of making one feel so valued and comfortable that you're able to tear down barriers and speak freely. It's the way I believe people who knew Jesus when He was in a human body felt when they talked to Him. What a gift to talk to another believer who makes you feel like you're spending time with Jesus. I hope this conversation brightens your day!

Welcome to the table!
We're discussing Matthew 5:17-20 in this episode. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
With this verse Jesus begins to get to the heart of the questions on everyone's minds. From the start of His ministry and the first Kingdom of Heaven announcement, Jesus has been creating a stir in Galilee. The disciples have questions. The crowds have questions. The religious leaders have questions. Everyone has some expectations and the people are making some assumptions about Jesus so when He brings up the Law and the prophets, they're leaning in and listening closely.
Is Jesus flipping the script by throwing out the Law and the Prophets?
He is not like the teachers of the law and the Pharisee's so what does He mean when He says, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Kimberly and I brought our questions and unpack what we're learning as we study the greatest sermon ever. We invite you to do the same. Thank you for joining us at our table.

I'm joined once again by Dr. Kim Stolzfus for another great conversation. Kim's one of my favorite people to talk to about matters of faith, especially conversation about being a Christian witness. She continues to amaze me with her humble, gentle obedience to live as salt and light wherever God places her.
Kim shares candidly about some of her experiences being salt and light in the world of academia. We both reflect on the times when we got it right and other times when we failed. Both our successes and our failures have contributed to our spiritual formation into ambassadors for Christ.
The conversation flew by and we both left the table encouraged. She's an inspiration to me. I think this episode will both inspire and encourage you. Thanks for joining us at the table!

In this episode of our series on Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Julie and Kimberly continue their journey through the Sermon on the Mount, settling into the opening words of Jesus in the Beatitudes. Together, they reflect on how these familiar verses reveal the heart of the kingdom of heaven—an upside-down kingdom built on grace, humility, mercy, and transformation.
The conversation explores how the Beatitudes are not separate categories of believers, but a complete portrait of kingdom character that Jesus forms in all His followers. Julie and Kimberly wrestle honestly with past misunderstandings, religious baggage, and the tension of learning to live out the message of Jesus in a world shaped by performance, fear, and self-protection.
In This Episode * Why the Beatitudes may be the "new Ten Commandments" for kingdom living * The connection between Jesus on the mountain and Moses on Mount Sinai * Understanding "poor in spirit" as the starting place of grace * Why the Beatitudes build upon one another as a unified picture of discipleship * Wrestling with persecution, suffering, and joy in the kingdom of heaven * Honest reflections on church culture, vulnerability, and creating safe spaces for broken people * The importance of confession, authenticity, and spiritual renewal in the church * Personal reflections on which Beatitude resonates most deeply right now
Scripture Discussed * Matthew 5:1–12 — The Beatitudes * Philippians 2 — The attitude of Christ * Psalms 27 — Seeking the face of God * Exodus 24 — Covenant at Mount Sinai

Welcome to the table!
In this episode we're beginning to go through the Sermon on the Mount. This is Jesus' "kingdom manifesto." This is the way of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Kimberly, my co-host, and I read through the entire sermon, Matthew 5–7, honestly wrestling with the tension, we feel over parts of it.
These three chapters contain some of Jesus' most familiar words and arguably some of His most misunderstood words. We pause in between each chapter to talk about some parts that are hard to understand and hard to obey.
The Sermon can be read in as little as 16 minutes. I'm inviting you to join us for the next couple of months reading it and coming back to the table for a series of episodes on the most important sermon of all time. Let's learn to live it out together!
D.A. Carson said, "The more I read these three chapters– Matthew 5, 6, and 7 – the more I am both drawn to them and shamed by them. Their brilliant light draws me like a moth to a spotlight; but the light is so bright it sears and burns."

Season 4, Episode 11 — Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven
Text: Matthew 4:18-25
Welcome to the table! In this episode we discuss Jesus calling four fishermen to become His disciples. I give some background on the relationship between a rabbi and his disciples in the first century. Kimberly and I reflect on being disciples of Jesus in the twenty-first century. We discuss what's hard about it and what we misunderstood or didn't understand about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
"A Rabbi's work was to instruct the crowds, but his greatest goal was to raise up disciples who would carry on his teaching."

Season 4, Episode 10 — Matthew: The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven Text: Matthew 4:12–17
In this episode, Kimberly and I finally arrive at the moment when Jesus begins his public ministry. As we step into Matthew 4, we talk about Jesus leaving Nazareth for Capernaum and why Galilee—called Galilee of the Gentiles—matters so much to the story of the kingdom of heaven.
We reflect on Jesus' rejection in his hometown, the way he flips expectations, and how the kingdom challenges our small worldviews. This conversation invites us to wrestle with nuance, loosen our grip on control, and consider who we're willing to sit with at the table as we follow the Table Flipper together.

In this episode, we explore Jesus' temptation in Matthew 4 and what it reveals about spiritual warfare, identity, and endurance. As followers of Jesus, we are not merely passing through the wilderness — we live here. But this is not a place of defeat. Because Jesus triumphed, we can stand firm in His victory.
What We Cover in This Episode * Why the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness * The parallels between:
+ Jesus and Israel in the wilderness
+ Jesus and Adam & Eve in the garden
The three categories of temptation:

Welcome to the table!
My Guest: Kim Stolzfus is a college instructor at the University of Kentucky. Kim shares her powerful testimony—one marked by early religious confusion, people-pleasing, debilitating panic attacks, and seasons of profound hopelessness. Through it all, Jesus continually meets her, flips her assumptions about God, and draws her into freedom, purpose, and joy in His upside-down kingdom.
This conversation is an honest exploration of what it looks like to bring our religious thinking to Jesus and allow Him to transform it—slowly, faithfully, and sometimes painfully—into true gospel freedom.
In This Episode, You'll Hear: * Kim's early experience with faith and how fear distorted her view of God * How people-pleasing and anxiety shaped her spiritual life * A pivotal gospel conversation with a Campus Crusade (Cru) leader named Adele * Why hearing the gospel didn't immediately change everything—but planted a seed * Kim's descent into severe panic attacks and hopelessness after college * A season of suffering that led to surrender and renewed dependence on God * How God answered prayers in unexpected (and unwanted) ways * Kim's journey through graduate school, Washington D.C., and deep Christian community * The power of Christian friendship, Bible study, and faithful presence * How God now uses Kim's story in her work as a university professor * Why faith the size of a mustard seed is more than enough
If you are walking through anxiety, fear, or despair—or if peace feels unfamiliar or even frightening—this episode is for you. Kim's story is a reminder to never give up, to cling to Jesus even when faith feels small, and to trust that God is always at work, even when we can't see it.

In Episode 7, Twila and I slow down and sit with the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3—a moment that marks both an ending and a beginning in God's story. As John the Baptist completes his role of preparing the way, Jesus steps into the waters of the Jordan, fully identifying with humanity and choosing obedience, even though He has no sin of His own.
We talk about why Jesus insists on being baptized "to fulfill all righteousness," and how this moment launches His public ministry while revealing the heart of the kingdom of heaven. Together, we trace the Jordan River through Scripture—from creation, to Israel's wilderness journey, to this powerful scene where the Father speaks, the Spirit descends, and the Son stands in humility.
This conversation invites us to reflect on wilderness seasons, waiting, and learning to trust God's timing. My prayer is that as we listen for God's voice in our own wilderness, we'll be equipped to bring hope, light, and belonging to others as we walk together in the way of the kingdom of heaven.

In this episode, we gather at the table to explore Matthew 3 and the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist—a bold, table-flipping voice calling God's people to repentance and renewal. In this conversation we invite our listeners to begin the year with anticipation, humility, and openness to transformation.
John's message is urgent: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." As Matthew's Gospel introduces this phrase, we unpack why Matthew speaks of the "kingdom of heaven," how John prepares the way for Jesus, and why repentance is more than behavior modification—it is a change of mind and direction that leads to a transformed life.
We explore John's confrontation of the Pharisees and Sadducees and his call to "produce fruit in keeping with repentance." We reflect on the tension between salvation as a free gift and the lifelong journey of sanctification that follows. We discuss how repentance is not a one-time event, but an ongoing posture of confession, surrender, and renewal.
Through personal stories, we also addresses influence, humility, and faithfulness without notoriety. John the Baptist's willingness to fade into the background becomes a model for resisting platform culture and trusting God with the outcome of our obedience. We share how confession, community, and even painful seasons can become places of deep redemption—where wounds are transformed into fruit for the kingdom.

Welcome to the table! In this Christmas-season episode, we continue sitting in Matthew 2 and invite Jesus to flip our tables as we linger with the hard parts of His story.
We explore the families urgent flight to Egypt, Jesus as a refugee, and what this passage reveals about God's heart for the vulnerable. Matthew shows us how Jesus retraces Israel's story—yet succeeds where Israel failed—fulfilling Old Testament prophecy and revealing the unity of Scripture.
We also confront the brutality of Herod, the grief of Bethlehem's mothers, and the truth that every life matters deeply to God.
Finally, we reflect on Jesus growing up in despised Nazareth—a reminder that our Savior identifies with outsiders, the marginalized, and those looked down upon.
This episode invites us to deepen our biblical literacy, embrace compassion, and follow Jesus in the way of the Kingdom of Heaven.

In this episode, Julie and Kimberly continue their journey through Matthew in our series, The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven. Today, we step into one of the most surprising moments of the Gospel: Joseph's dream and his quiet, courageous obedience.

In this episode, we're pulling up a chair to explore the family tree of Jesus — and what it reveals about God's heart for our own broken families. By getting to know the people in Jesus' genealogy, we discover that there's nothing in our stories too big for Him to redeem. Jesus understands our grief, our scandals, our trauma, and our mess. He gets it — because His own family line tells a story of grace breaking through generations of pain.
Twila joins the conversation as we unpack Matthew's genealogy, written to prove that Jesus is both the Son of David and the Son of Abraham — the fulfillment of God's covenant promises. We'll see how Matthew intentionally includes women, Gentiles, and outsiders in the story of redemption, revealing that the gospel has always been radically inclusive.

Welcome back to the table! It's been a minute since I've sat here doing what I love—talking about Jesus, the Table Flipper, and learning His table-flipping ways.
In this episode, my co-host Kimberly Daniels joins me as we reflect on the unexpected turns our lives have taken this year. We're also launching a brand-new study: Matthew—The Way of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Together, we're asking God to teach us the ways of His Kingdom through Matthew's unique perspective and personality. This episode is all about setting the tone for what's ahead in our study!
Like Matthew, we each have our own "before and after" stories of following Jesus. Matthew went from being an insider, to an outsider, and then was brought back into the family of God—a story that mirrors the redeeming power of the gospel in all of us.

Welcome to the table! This is the last episode in the Ephesians series. Amy Crump is back to talk with me about the relationship landmines associated with parenting and work. We do not ignore slavery in this passage either. I also get to talk briefly about the armor of God. Paul brings all of the relationship landmines together by laying out the armor of God in the context of our relationship struggles. We do not have a people problem. We have a real enemy working to wreak havoc in our relationships. This makes complete sense especially in light of how our relationships are to reveal that we are children of God. This is how the world knows who we belong to by the way we love one another. Ouch! Let’s make the most of our witness.

Welcome to the table! My conversation with Amy Crump covers a lot of ground. We had a long set up of discussing our formative years growing up in the Church era where we learned a number of erroneous teachings on the subject of submission. Add in a word study, a trip back to Genesis, and you end up with a long on ramp to Ephesians 5. Instead of editing this episode down, we’re inviting you to spend some extra time with us at the table. This might be a good episode to listen to while you’re being active. I love to listen to long podcast episodes when I’m cooking, doing household work, or excercising.
We’re sticking with the Message translation for Ephesians 5. I continue to recommend spending 20 minutes reading all of Ephesians to take in the entire letter as it was intended. It makes all the difference!

Welcome back to the table for part two of a conversation Twila and I had about Passover in season one. Holy week is such an important week of remembrance each and every year. This week was important for the Jews to remember how God delivered them from Egyptian slavery. For us followers of Jesus, this week is when we remember the high cost of what our sin cost Jesus. Against the backdrop of Passover, Jesus rolled out the New Covenant.
This year during this season of lent, I have been richly blessed in my relationship with Jesus, who you know, I call the Table Flipper. This week, I am drawing near to him, while planning one of the best meals of the year. The Easter lunch where I gather around a table with my family to celebrate the resurrection of our table flipping King.
Oh Death, where is your sting? Thank you Jesus for flipping the table on death, and setting us free from death claim on us. Fear not friends, Jesus has silenced death.

Welcome to the table! In honor of Holy week, I'm re-releasing two episodes from season 1. We were in a series on Mark. Watch for part 2 to be released later this week.
I hope you have a wonderful Easter!
This is part one of a two part episode about the last supper. I talk about my religious experiences of celebrating the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread instead of Easter. Twila and I are both seeking to learn more about the Jewish holidays. We are learning and growing in understanding. I'm sure we've barely only begun to scratch the surface. Join us as we dig into learning about Jesus in a more Jewish context. Please extend us grace as we probably fumble some of the details. Hopefully we will inspire you to dig in more to discover more richness and beauty in the Jewish Feasts. Thank you for joining us to learn around the table.

Welcome to the table! In this episode Kimberly joins me at our table to discuss what it means to live a life worthy of the gospel. Well, at least our understanding of what it means. This is a progressive work in our lives. Maturing in Christ, growing up in our salvation and becoming like Jesus and doing as Jesus did is the heart of Ephesians 4.
The Gospel is table flipping! We don’t walk worthy so that God will love us, but because He does love us. It is motivated out of gratitude, not out of a desire to earn merit.
Our text is Ephesians 4. We are using the Message translation.
NIV 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

God’s kingdom was on full display at Gather 25 and as we discussed our expectations were exceeded. If you missed it or want to rewatch sessions you can visit https://www.gather25.com/.
Our mini recap is a great segway to our discussion of God’s grace to the outsiders in Ephesians 2: 14-22. Again, we are loving the message translation that brings a fresh perspective. If you’ve never read or listened to the message translation, it only takes about 25 minutes to get through the book of Ephesians. Welcome to the table! Kimberly joined me in Ephesians 2 for a gospel centered conversation. It’s a good day when we get to talk about God’s grace to sinners.
Kimberly and I have both been reading Job, so we used him as an example of how even someone God called blameless and upright still needed God’s grace in order to receive salvation. Spoiler: Everyone needs God’s grace! Salvation is God’s gift from start to finish.

Welcome to the table! I loved having this conversation with Kimberly. I believe you will also love hearing from her. Many of the reasons I love Kimberly simply shine throughout this episode. She is bold and transparent about who she is now and who she is becoming. We talked about last year's highlights, lessons, and much more. I bless God for her life!
In February we’re going to be shaping our conversations around Ephesians. One of the things I love about Ephesians is how Paul’s depth and brilliance really shine in his letter to the Church at Ephesus. Paul was an intellectual giant and he really let’s loose in this letter. So to bring Ephesians into a less familiar and simpler text we’re going to use The Message version of the Bible. I want to invite you to follow along with us using your favorite Bible app to inhale a fresh breath of God’s Word. Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to the Table!
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention month. Being an advocate for survivors is an area of both calling and passion for me. I was honored to sit at the table with Dr. Jeanne Allert. Jeanne is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Survivor Care located in La Grange, Kentucky.
Jeanne was a pioneer in this field. In 2007 Jeanne was convicted to leave the trappings of a lucrative career as an internet consultant to establish one of the first long term restorative care programs in the Mid-Atlantic for victims of domestic sex trafficking. Her story is compelling. She brings a depth of insight into this very complex atrocity happening all around us.
Jeanne has table flipping perspectives that I believe will move you to consider what you can do to be an advocate. She speaks truth bombs to middle aged women, parents, and men in this episode. At the very least she will inspire you to begin to see women with fresh eyes of compassion.

Welcome to the Table! I’m excited to kick off season 3 with Twila Brown. We’re easing into January by taking some time to reflect on 2024 and dream about 2025. Coming out of 2024 it was important for me to release a long exhale. I needed to get my heart, body, and mind back into a good working rhythm. Our conversation will give you a little bit of insight into how we both do this. I hope it helps you think about the gift of time God entrusts each of us with. It may not be January 1st, but by God’s grace every day affords us a fresh start.
We talked about…
and much more.

Welcome to the table! We’re wrapping up the series on The Church at Philippi. I tried to bring some new perspectives on Philippians to the table. This book is a crowd favorite among followers of Jesus or as we call Him, the Table Flipper. I have needed every word of this letter.
Philippians 4 is pretty well known around the Church. We love this chapter which we know best starting at verse 4. I have probably talked more about verses 1-3 more than you’ve ever heard over the last 8 episodes. I believe these verses are the backdrop for the entire letter. I don’t know many people who are thankful for conflicts. I for one am thankful for Euodia and Syntyche. Thanks ladies for inspiring Paul to write this letter.
This is the final episode of season 2. Thanks for joining us at the table in 2024!
Flipping Tables will be back in January. We will keep following the Table Flipper and learning more table flipping perspectives in 2025. I’m excited for what’s on the horizon!

Welcome to the table! This episode has Twila and I gathering around Philippians 3. Some call this chapter the most loved chapter in the letter. I truly fell in love with Paul’s letter to the Church at Philippi in this chapter. However, the most searched verses in Philippians are ones from chapter four. When I think of one verse that has had the biggest impact on my relationship with Jesus, hand’s down it’s Philippians 3:10. Thanks to Beth Moore! Beth taught this verse from the Amplified version many years ago at a conference in Cincinnati. This verse changed the way I prayed. Paul’s aim became my aim. Recently, I have been in circumstances that have caused me to dig deep into my joy within reservoir. It was God’s perfect timing for me to sit at the table with my good friend and God’s good Word. Thanks for coming to the table with us!

Welcome to the Table! I invited Twila to co-host this episode. We discussed how Philippians is helping us navigate life right now. If you’re craving an honest conversation where a couple of Jesus followers are trying to apply Paul’s letter to our lives, this is the episode for you. We might use more words than you would or maybe you want more. Let this conversation springboard you to conversations around your table.
We talk about untangling and being squeezed from inside the church and from the world. These are not new problems. Reading through the Old Testament while working in Philippians has reminded me of this. We’re happy to have you at our table!

Welcome to the table! In the fifth episode in our study of Philippians we take on Paul’s exhortation to seek unity and apply humility to all of our relationships. Easier said than done! It seems everywhere we turn there’s a headline or a conversation about how divided we are as a nation. The Church isn’t doing much better. Kimberly and I try to stay in our lane. We talk about our struggles with self and with pride. Honestly, our side is pretty bleak until we read the beautiful verses about the example of Christ.
The Church at Philippi’s lack of unity led to this incredible theological statement about Christ. This is pretty deep water for me to try to teach on so I mostly bring us to the edge of it to behold Christ’s greatness and triumph. I may not be able to grasp the depth of this well but it makes my heart sing! These verses will surely be your bright spot for this episode.

Welcome to the table! This is the fourth episode in our series on Philippians. Kimberly joined me for the second half of chapter 1. We tried to get into the anxious feelings the Church at Philippi was having listening to the letter. All they wanted to know was how Paul was doing. What a relief for them to find out that in spite all of that had happened to Paul in the five years since they had seen him, Pau was still advancing the gospel in spite of his chains. A frosty welcome from the church in Rome or being chained to a guard couldn’t sideline Paul from sharing Christ with whoever was in front of him.
Are we doing the same? This is our time to carry the great commission to the ends of the earth and to the people right in front of us.

I’m joined by Kimberly. She is one of my partners in the gospel. We do kind of an overview of Paul’s letter to the Church at Philippi. We bounce all over the book as we try to get to know this Church. We discuss the timeline of Paul’s life. I share some of my conversion story.

We’re continuing to work our way through Acts 16. We’re looking at the events which took place surrounding the beginning of the Church at Philippi. God worked through missteps, opposition, and persecution to bring an entire household to faith in Christ.
In Acts 16 we meet an unnamed jailer who became another one of the living stones being built into the framework of the Church at Philippi. The jailer and his household crossed over from darkness to light through listening to Paul and Silas rejoice in the night. Their joy gave birth to more joy.
Kimberly joined me for discussion around all of these events. In our conversation we tackle some hard things like being annoyed with people who need our compassion. This passage also contains examples of human trafficking and antisemitism. You know we don’t avoid the hard topics at the table.
In episode 39 we tackled the polarizing topic of immigration. If you missed that episode, please go back and listen. Link to Bri's book and the Women of Welcome site: Start With Welcome

Welcome to the table!
We're kicking off our study of Philippians by going back to the beginning of their story.
Study of Philippians: The house church at Philippi and beyond with the women who led there.
We’re starting in Acts 16. This is part one in our getting to know the individuals who became the living stones who formed the church at Philippi. My daughter Lydia is named after the influential woman Paul met at a prayer gathering. She became Paul’s first convert to Christianity in Europe. It seemed fitting to have my daughter join me as we talk about her namesake.
I hope you enjoy this episode and that you will join us for the next few weeks as we get to know the Church at Philippi. Then as we go through Paul's letter to this small but mighty church.

Welcome to the table!
Friends, this is a very special episode.
This conversation has been on my heart for almost a year.
We’re talking about one of those subjects Christians try to avoid talking about.
It’s one of the hot topics of the election season... immigration.
Hang with me! We can have this conversation. You're going to be glad you listened.
I invited Bri Stensrud to the table to help us untangle this complicated issue.
Bri Stensrud is the Director of Women of Welcome. A nonpartisan advocacy project for immigrants and refugees that helps Christians think about immigration issues from a Biblical perspective rather than a political one.
I enjoyed this conversation almost as much as I enjoyed Bri’s book. I learned so much from her book. Follow Women of Welcome on your socials to stay informed.

Welcome to the table!
In this episode we turn to Romans 16 to discover what we can learn about Paul and the early Church. Romans is a letter that helps us to know what we believe and why we believe it. Romans is a deep well of church doctrine. Doctrine is a big word that in no way should intimidate us. Doctrine simply means a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church etc.
Paul sent a woman named Phoebe with this letter to the Church in Rome. This is a pretty big deal. We can learn a lot about Paul and the early church by slowing down and reading this chapter. Hopefully, we uncover enough insights to make you hungry for more.
Twila joined me at the table via zoom. This was a podcast first. I want to tell you this because as you listen you will hear a difference in the sound. Seasoned podcast listeners are used to these kinds of recordings. I listen to so many podcasts this doesn’t even phase me anymore.

Welcome to the Table! Kimberly joined me for a conversation that was a continuation of our book club discussion from the night before. We are loving our conversations around the Beth Guckenberger’s Warrior of Eden.
I hope this conversation prompts you to get a copy of the book and maybe even start a book club. Kimberly’s son Clark gives book club a five star review. He always wants to come to book club! Beth’s book is super easy to discuss. She has included questions at the end of every chapter.
Friends, we need to step away from the screens and really see people. Do a double take at the needs all around us. One reason we spend a lot of time on screens is we are lonely. Invite someone to the table!
The Hebrew word ra’ah means to “see,” but it also means “to respond to a need.”
Embedded in it’s definition is the challenge if we don’t do anything about what we are looking at, can we claim to have seen it?

Welcome to the Table!
I had my original co-hosts, Twila and Kimberly, finally back at the table. Woo-hoo!
It was so good to push reset on the podcast with them.
Sometimes you need to pause and recalibrate.
We discuss in the episode how we are not the same women we were when we started journeying together. The three of us are growing in knowledge and wisdom.
We have learned to hold things loosely as we follow the Table Flipper.
Those versions of us would not recognize us, but I believe they would grow to like who we’ve become. Warrior is a a much better look than women anchored in fear.
Luke 12:32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
The women in our Warrior of Eden book club weren’t familiar with the terms. Here’s a pretty simple explanation: complementarianism vs. egalitarianism.

Welcome to the table! This is our fourth conversation in the water with lemon series. My guest is Charliese Lewis. She brings 30 years of ministry experience to the table. We discuss her calling, ministry, work, health, and even talk about our age. This conversation reminds us God is in all the details of our lives. He knows our days and spaces before one of them comes to into being.
I personally like conversations that stretch me. This one gives us a window into a church experience you like me may be less familiar with. Charliese describes growing up in a church where women had few restrictions on what they could do in serving the Lord and His people. Conversations have a way of shaping us. I hope this one will positively shape you and inspire you to spend time at tables with other image bearers of God.

Flipping Tables Fall Preview
Welcome to the table! We’re taking a few weeks to prepare for the fall series. So we will not be releasing new episodes for a few weeks. I thought this would be a great opportunity to tell you what we’re working on for the fall series. Here’s a hint: It’s one of Paul’s prison letters.
We still have some great conversations coming in the Water With Lemon end of summer series. One that we’re extra excited about!
Our next episode will release on September 10th.
Need something to listen to this week? I would love for you to check out this episode, “Should Christians Support Israel” from The Jewish Road podcast. I thought this was a great episode with some wonderful insights. Hope you will check it out!
We’ll be back soon!
Welcome to the table! My guest for this third episode in our summer series is Alva Skiles. Alva brought great insights to the table. She has lived a long life faithfully serving God and others. She has been a teacher, a nurse, a missionary, and a pastor just to name a few of the many roles she has filled. She also happens to be Kimberly’s aunt.
I loved talking with her. This episode is about a third of the time I spent at the table with Alva. We had a wonderful time talking about her life of teaching and serving. When you finish this episode you might find yourself googling photo’s of Kansas wheat fields. I did!
Alva went to seminary at the age of 43. She accepted the call to pastor her first church before she was even finished. Just incredible! Even now that she’s retired, she’s still serving in Bible Study Fellowship and in her local church. She continues to flourish in all she does. You will love Aunt Alva!
2 Timothy 2:24-25 The bond-servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if God should grant them opportunity to repent.

Welcome to the table! This is the first episode in the summer series "Water with Lemon". Just like a slice of lemon adds a zesty twist to your glass of water, this series aims to bring a fresh perspective to various topics, making your summer days hopefully a bit brighter.
At this table, we love bright spots! My guest Renee Flynn was a bright spot for me at an event I attended a few months ago. She was captivating as she shared some of her testimony. Renee talks candidly about her journey from rebellion to restored. A story like hers is a great reminder to not lose heart when loved ones rebel against the Christian faith and walk away from Jesus. We had a great discussion about her new restored life. Enjoy our conversation!

Welcome to the table! I invited Amy Hayden and Susan Snodgrass back for this special back to school episode. I wanted to speak to an educator currently working in a high school and in a middle school to gain fresh insights into what they encounter. These women are empowering students and coming along side them to as Amy said: "Be their most authentic and genuine selves in a world that makes them constantly feel like they’re not enough or they don’t have enough."
These women are my friends. I knew they would bring valuable perspectives. What I love about Amy and Susan is they work from calling. This is more than a job to each of them. I learned so much from them.
For the elementary school perspective I talked to rising fifth grader, Luke Daniels. So fun! It was definitely my bright spot to talk to a man child. Luke is our first male guest. I think it’s the way the Table Flipper would’ve done it. It just seemed right.
Thank you to all of our education friends. I see you! I appreciate the sacrifices you make to make our world better by educating one student at a time.
Pray for our schools and all the people who fill them.

Welcome to the table! I hope you can sit down at a table for this episode. I believe Jesus has a word for you. I LOVE John 21! Every time I read this chapter, Jesus has at least one for me. Let me encourage you to prayerfully listen to this episode.
I'm so happy Twila was able to be at the table with me. She and I got to stand on the Sea of Galilee where this chapter unfolded in 2021. It was an early morning and there was a stillness that day that marked us. Standing there Jesus spoke so clearly into me. This chapter takes me back to that moment. Everytime I read it Jesus brings another layer. This is our special place. I'm honored to share it with you.
Twila and I love this book! When we talk about "feed my sheep", let's don't miss the discipleship.

Welcome to the table! My friend Amy Hayden joins me to reflect on what we've learned studying John's gospel. For seven months we've gone all in with John. Amy and her husband listen to the podcast. They do the Table 2 lessons. Amy has been a part of the Table 3 community that meets to discuss the reflection questions. If you know her, you already love her. If not, you will love her after this episode.
I've loved this season. Even the parts where the Lord has stretched me. Friends, when we immerse ourselves in the Living Word of God, His Spirit will work within us. I've found Jesus once again to be faithful. I'm so thankful to be following the Table Flipper. Even if there's some discomfort in the decrease.
John 20:30-31
John 3:27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”

Welcome to the table! This episode contains the climactic moment in John. Mary Beth is back to teach us. We had a great conversation. I love it when she’s here. I get to sit back, learn and talk to my favorite Bible teacher. After six episodes, I bet she’s also moving up you list of favorites.
I have a soft spot for Thomas. Don’t call him doubting Thomas in my presence unless you wanna fight. LOL! John wrote his gospel for people like Thomas. The ones who just can’t get over the finish line and believe. The ones who wonder is the gospel actually for me.
“My Lord and My God” is the moment Thomas crushed his lingering unbelief.
You could say that with the help of Jesus, Thomas flipped the table of unbelief.

Welcome to the table! Who's ready to gather around the empty tomb? We finally get to talk about the resurrection. Mary Magdalene is my favorite woman in scripture. Well, at least the New Testament. She was a woman with a broken heart coming to serve Jesus. She needed to be near Jesus. I don't believe she was expecting to encounter her Risen Lord.
Love brought Mary to the tomb. Jesus rewarded her with being the first person to get to announce the resurrection. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. When He says her name...well cue the tears, I'm undone by His kindness.
My friend Susan makes her podcast debut. She was a fabulous co-host bringing many great insights. I'm glad you get to meet another one of the women who regularly join me at the many tables of life. You will love her tender heart. She's cut from the same clay that Mary was cut from.

Folded napkin myth
The Greek word is saudarion, which comes from a Latin word for “sweat.” It can refer to a towel for wiping sweat from one’s face. It is used in the Greek to denote a towel or cloth, but not specifically a table napkin.
Two Bible translations use the word folded (NIV84, NKJV). Others translate the word as “rolled up” (NASB, ASV, RSV) or “wrapped together” (KJV). The Greek word is entulisso, which is from words that may mean “to twist” or “to entwine.”
NIV 2009 says, “The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.”

In this episode Kimberly and I finish John 19. We discuss wrapping up to-do things on the redemption list with a few more prophesies being crossed off. The religious leaders were ecstatic to have crossed Jesus off their to-do list. Only thing left to do was get Him off the cross before their Passover/ Days of Unleavened Bread celebrations kicked off.
I regret using the phrase “silent Saturday”. It wasn’t Saturday. I was only referring to the silence after Jesus was dead. The in-between silence between “It is finished” and “He is risen!” My mind was also on silence thinking about Joseph and Nicodemus being secret followers. Please don’t let my phrase trip you up.

Welcome to the table! In our John series, we're gathering around John 18-19. Zooming in on Jesus' Roman trial before Pilate.
Is Pilate really trying to avoid sentencing Jesus to death?
Why is Pilate behaving in an out of character kind of way or is even out of character?
Kimberly and I dig into these questions. The Roman trial of Jesus was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Pilate to talk to Jesus. Jesus makes the good confession (1 Timothy 6:13) to Pilate. I think Pilate blew it. Let's learn together from Pilate's error.

Welcome to the Table! In our John series, we've reached John 18. It's time to turn the page to study the most important hour in human histroy. When the Son of God gave His life for our atonement and our ransom. I began to think about how sometimes I have a hard time turning the page on seasons of my life. John shows Jesus from a position of power in His gospel. Jesus is in complete control. Plus, the contrast between Peter and Jesus gives us a lot to think about.
In this episode we cover:
John 18: 1-27

Welcome to the table! This is our last episode in the John 17 series. I didn’t want these episodes to end. They have been such a gift! Thankful for my favorite Bible teacher, Mary Beth, for reminding me why I love this chapter so much. I hope you’ve fallen in love with just how simple prayer is through this careful examination of Jesus’ prayer.
Keep turning back to John 17.
Linger in the holy of holies.
Prayer is where we are changed.
In this episode we talk about ways we can be an answer to Jesus’ prayer.
We discuss unity, which is one of the most prominent themes in His prayer.
Before creation, we were loved, wanted, and prayed for.
Jesus wants us to have the same close relationship that He has with His Father.
This is what He prayed for us.

Welcome to the table! This is part two in our John 17 series. A holy chapter where God talks to God needs at least three episodes. In part two Mary Beth leads us through what Jesus prayed for His disciples.

Welcome to the table!
In our John series we have reached the Holy of Holies. John 17 is unlike any chapter in the entire Bible. God talks to God. The veil is pulled back, and we get to listen to a holy conversation. It is intimate and profound. Simple yet glorious.
John 17:1-5 Jesus prays for Himself.
Mary Beth is back as the guest Bible teacher for this episode. She does a great job leading us through the first five verses. We felt the Lord leading our conversation in ways that are hard to describe. I pray you encounter the Lord as you listen. I encourage you to pray before you listen for the Lord to teach you and speak to you.

Welcome to the Table! Deanna Spangler joined me at the table to discuss a great gift. I like to have guests on the podcast who I love talking about scripture with on any given day. Deanna brings great insights to our conversation. John 16 is a fantastic chapter giving us plenty to discuss. Jesus was promising the disciples that when He returned to the Father they would recieve a great gift. The Holy Spirit would take their relationship to Him and the Father to the next level. They were having a hard time understanding how this gift was an going to be an upgrade compared to having Jesus with them.
In our conversation we discuss some of the roles of The Holy Spirit and how having Him live inside of Believers is a great gift.
Deanna is the executive director of Refuge For Women Kentucky. She is a wife and a mother, a friend to many, and champion for many more. She has a Masters degree in spiritual formation from Asbury Seminary. Deanna is a survivor of human trafficking and exploitation in the commercial sex trade industry.
Warning to our listeners that this episode does contain conversations around these sensitive topics.

Welcome to the table! My friend Stephanie Hall remained at the table with me. We continued our conversation around John 15. Stephanie is one of those people who is easy to love. She makes Jesus command to "Love one another" both a blessing and a delight. This conversation was pretty spontaneous and unplanned. It just flowed out of us. We were two women sitting at a table talking about the Living Word of God. These are my favorite kinds of conversations. I hope you're encouraged to make room at your table so that you love others.

Welcome to the podcast table! My co-host is my friend Stephanie Hall. Stephanie is on staff at Centenary Church in Lexington. She oversees women's, couples, and young adult ministries at Centenary. We had the best conversation around John 15:1-8. I pray it nourishes you as much as it nourished us.
I once was invited to speak at a church. When I told them I wanted to teach from John 15, they were quietly concerned. They didn't tell me until after the conference that John 15 had in their church history been a passage that divided their congregation. I tell you this because I know this is a chapter with some challenges. We can get rattled by phrases like "cut off". We get nervous about salvation security at a couple of points in this chapter. I truly believe we don't need to be worried about being cut off from Christ. Our salvation is a gift rooted in the love of God.
I loved talking with Stephanie about this chapter. Join us for the renewing of our mind as we gather around John 15 for this episode and the next one.

Welcome to a doozy of an episode! It's a doozy because of the John 14:6 I Am statement.
The sixth I Am statement is controversial. Christians believe it, but we squirm when we have to talk about this one. I marvel that Jesus dropped this one on His boys when they were not at the top of their game. They were troubled.
You can feel the whine in Thomas's voice when he asks, "How can we know the way?" Jesus didn't teach them how to wallow in their emotions. Jesus has an amazing way of bringing troubled people to a new well of living water. What Jesus does with the disciples is similiar to what He did with the woman in John 4. He teaches deep spiritual truth to troubled people.
I needed to have this conversation. I want to become better at discussing the harder aspects of our faith. Let's get better together.
One of the earliest criticisms of Christianity was the observation that we would take anybody!
Slave or free; rich or poor; man or woman; Jews, Gentiles everyone was welcome.
In keeping with true Biblical Christianity everyone is still welcome at the table. Yes, we have to leave our lives of sin. In fact the only way to actually leave sin is by uniting with Christ. Jesus is the answer to all our problems.
I was not at the top of my game either. My allergies were giving me fits. I mispoke a few times, mostly minor, but I did say Jesus was troubled in John 3 when I meant John 13. I think I may have implied humanity was perfect before the fall. Sorry about that! Humanity was good and sinless but not perfect.

Jesus washing the feet of his beloved disciples is table flipping. Can you imagine how they must have felt when their Lord and Rabbi began to wash their feet?
What if the key to happiness is serving others?
Jesus washed the feet of His betrayer and His chosen leader, who flagrantly betrayed Him later that night. Peter took the "go big or go home approach." The others just ran for their lives.
I've been apart of foot washing ceremonies. For me washing someones feet was easier than having my feet washed.

Welcome to the table! We've reached the final week of Jesus' ministry. Jesus was six days out from going to the cross. He's attending a dinner party given in His honor. I believe this is the most important week in history. All of the gospel writers give much attention to this week in their gospels. John gives half!
Can you imagine doing something Jesus said would be remembered whenever the gospel is preached?
Mark 14:9 "Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Kimberly joined me for this lesson and conversation. Can I just say how much I love having my close friends join me at the podcast table? The women who join me are seriously seeking to be like Mary. Women who love to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from Him.

Welcome to the table! Kimberly and I gather around John 11. The conversations we will be having from this point forward will be more weighty. The cross is drawing near. The Hour of His death is rapidly approaching. John has been building the case that Jesus is the Son of God.
For the first time in John's gospel we meet a trio of siblings. Lazarus, Martha, and Mary are walking through the shadow of the valley of death. Lazarus is in fact dead when Jesus arrives in Bethany. Our conversation focuses on the heartbreaking and emotional conversations Jesus has with each of the sisters.
We discuss:
John 11, Isaiah 53:1-3, Psalm 37:5, Hebrews 4:12, 14-16, Proverbs 14:12

"As He went along" Mary Beth started us off with a personal story of when she first fell in love with John 9. Her favorite two words in scripture "so that" also show up in this narrative.

Welcome to the table! In this episode we pause the John series. My co-hosts and I are fresh off a whirlwind trip to Fort Worth for IF: Gathering. This is my favorite weekend of the year for spirtual refreshment. We want to share our post IF conversation and a few favorite take aways.
IF was all about Jesus. The John themes we've convered so far in our study: Bread of Life, Living Water, satisfaction, and Light in dark places were woven through IF. We loved being in the sea of authenticity and the mulitude of people we were gathered with. Everywhere we looked we saw Jesus illuminated in those around us. Welcome to the table! My co-host is Amy Crump. Amy has been with me at the table for two episodes (34 & 35) in season one. She’s a great friend to me. We love discussing the scriptures together and helping one another flourish. I know you will enjoy everything she brings to the table.
She shares some great stories from her recent trip to Liberia. Check out Psalm823. These stories are examples of “this is what Jesus does.”
In John 7 Jesus travels to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
We discuss the water drawing ceremonies among other aspects of the type of celebration that was occurring during this eight day festival. One rabbi commented, “Anyone who has not seen the water drawing ceremony has never seen joy in all of His life!”

In this conversation and lesson, Kimberly and I discuss sourdough bread and the Bread of Life. We chatted about my bread baking hobby. I'm enjoying my baking bread. It's a hobby that teaches me some pretty important life lessons. It's funny how my hobby has given me a new understanding of biblical texts. The feeding of the 5000 is the mircle all four gospel writers record. John's account is my favorite of the eye witness accounts. The miracle takes place in Bethsaida. What happens the next day in the Capernaum synagogue makes up the second half of John 6. Subscribe to the Flipping Tables email to receive the John 6 lesson. Welcome to the table!
In this episode, we're going to be talking about a big splashy healing Jesus did in Jerusalem on the sabbath. This healing of a man at the pools of Bethesda initiated a conversation between Jesus and the religious leaders. My favorite healing in John is coming up in John 9. Jesus does both of these healings at two different pools on the Sabbath. This healiing of this man, who had been suffering in his condition for 38 years, ends sadly with the man not worshipping Jesus but walking away from Jesus to tell the religious leaders that it was Jesus who healed him.
Jesus initiated healing with a man who would walk away. There is nothing to indicate this man had faith. In fact, he was waiting for the pools to bubble. He was hoping for a miracle but he was hoping in a myth about the bubbling pool.
John 5 begins with the healing. The big draw to me is not the big miracle, but the conversation the miracle initiates with the religious leaders. I think Jesus is asking everyone in this chapter, do you want to get well?

I'm joined in this episode by my dear friend, mentor, and favorite Bible teacher. Mary Beth Ludt teaches us from John 4. You're going to love her fresh takes on this passage brought to you by a woman Bible teacher. This is a Table Flipping conversation Jesus has with the Samaritain woman.
Women loves this woman. Her story resonates with us. We don't even need to know about her past. The way Jesus talked to her is what draws us near. We love the kindness and love Jesus extended to her.
Jesus went to the well to wait for her. He sought her out. I picture Jesus watching her as she approaches with a smile. "Here she comes." His pulse is beginning to race, because He knows He's about to change her life. He can barely contain His joy. He's going to remove her shame. He's going to bring her out of isolation and turn her into a missionary.
Jacob's well was dug in the days of Genesis. It still exists today. The name of the town is now called Nabulus. The well is located at the base of Mount Gerizim. To this very day, Samaritians still live on Mount Gerizim, and you can still see the ruins and remains of the Samaritian temple toward the top of the mountain. We're still talking about this epic encounter.

Welcome to the table! John 3:16 has to be the most well known verse in the entire Bible. I share a couple of my favorite John 3:16 stories before I read and teach a lesson on the original 3:16 story.
I have so many questions about what this conversation was like between Jesus and Nicodemus. For starters: Was it windy? Where did this take place?
I want to hear the testimony of Nicodemus. What was his journey like to being born again? Don't you want to know when did it click for him. I like the episode about this in The Chosen. Though I'm not convinced it went like that. I believe his journey to saving faith took longer than that one conversation. I wish we were having coffee so we could discuss this together.
I hope you enjoy this episode. I hope you know Jesus loves you.

“I read and smoked my way through Matthew. Then I smoked my way through Mark and Luke. I smoked all the way to John three, and I came to this verse that talks about how God loves the world so much that he gave his son to die on a cross so that whoever believes in him can be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life with him. So that's what I did. I put my faith in Jesus.” (Page 62 and 63 of Don’t Hold Back)

In episode 2 we're talking about the wedding at Cana. This is the first of eight signs in John’s gospel. Running out of wine would have brought shame to this family. We consider why Jesus chose a wedding for His first public sign. There's more going on here than Jesus graciously saving a family from shame and possibly more. The bridegroom and his family could have become financially liable for inadequate wedding provisions. Jesus was teaching us about His future wedding.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Around the table, we discuss our favorite Christmas songs and the original Christmas carol. Mary's Magnificat is on another level of greatness. It's holy. Saturated in scripture, overflowing with joy...before Mary's life was turned upside down she got to celebrate her divine pregnancy with her older cousin Elizabeth. I love thinking about these women huddled together in isolation for three months. Can you imagine the coversations they must've had?

Welcome to our Christmas table! My co-hosts and I have a fun conversation around two encounters with the angel Gabriel. There are many table flipping things in our Luke 1:5-45 text.

This episode I'm joined by Anna Lauren Jacobs. I met Anna Lauren through a mutual friend. Anna Lauren is the community engagement coordinator for Refuge For Women Kentucky. This is a ministry that is near and dear to my heart. We talked about everything from how she became a follower of the Table Flipper to birds of prey.
She's my first Gen. Z guest, a second year law school student, a graduate of Asbury University, and she was one of many who led worship at the Asbury Downpour earlier this year.
I loved this conversation so much that I persuaded her to join me for a second episode. Enjoy this first one and meet us back at the table next week for episode 45. She brought a lot of wisdom and insights to the table. We're big fans of Gen Z! She's a great example of why we cheer loudly for this group of young adults.

Why does Jesus want His followers to remember Lot's wife? This is the question Kimberly and I dig into in this episode. Luke 17:20-37 is our main Bible text.
Every generation asks, "Is this the end of the world?"
John Eldredge put it this way in Resilient.
"Honestly, I think many people would trade the return of Jesus Christ himself for a nice little end to their story and let another generation live through the end of the age."
Ouch! This hits a little too close to home. Are we spending more time trying to save our lives instead of losing it for the Kingdom of God?
We reference the times Noah lived in and what it was like in Sodom where Lot had chosen to live.
God gives us warnings and promptings to help us turn around when we've started down the wrong road. Following Jesus is a narrow road. The broad path that the majority of people are going down is a road that will end in sudden destruction.
When you're facing the temptation to love the present world more than longing for the Kingodm of God, Remember Lot's wife.

21 week study of John which includes a weekly lesson for you to go deeper with us. Join us as we continue to Flourish by following the Table Flipper.
In this episode, we discuss a table flipping story that was widely circulated but that no one was in a hurry to write down. Thankfully after, the dust settled, John wrote it down. Jesus has an epic dust up with the Pharisees on the eighth day after the Feast of Tabernacles over a woman caught in adultery. What does Jesus write in the dust? This is the question we explore together.
At the end of the episode, we discuss how the Chinese are rewriting this story with a tragic ending. I've linked the Radical video.
Thanks for listening! Keep following the Table Flipper, and leave the table flipping to Jesus.

This is the last episode in the Mark Series. Quick talking Mark with His fast scene changes leaves us wondering, "Where's Jesus?" and "What happened to His body?" The ending feels abrupt. We don't want to just take the angel's announcement, "He is risen!" We want to see Jesus being reunited with His followers.
Mark seems to want to leave with a bit of a cliffhanger. Mark wants us to decide based on his whole gospel: Was Jesus the Messiah? Based on all we've learned about Jesus: Do we believe that Jesus did in fact rise from the dead, just as He said He would?
Text: Mark 16, John 1:1-3
Julie paraphrases John 20.
In C.S. Lewis’s book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, when Aslan (the Christ figure) comes back to life after he willingly gave his live to save the guilty betrayer, Aslan says, “It means that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still that she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the Stillness and darkness before time began, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who has committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's Stead, the table would crack and death itself would work backwards.”
The Resurrection of Jesus turns back time itself.
By placing our faith in Jesus, The Resurrection and the Life, the clock on our life gets reset. Time starts over for us. As followers of Jesus, resurrection hope dawns over the rest of our lives.

In this episode we pick up at the end of the Last Supper and walk through the long night Jesus endured on the way to the cross. I tried to set the scene so that we can consider what condition the disciples were in, and just who was around to cry out for Jesus to be crucified.
We came away from this lesson with more adoration for Jesus and with more compassion for the disciples. Join us for the long night that happened one cool spring night under a full Passover moon. The Jerusalem streets were quiet, and the sun rises to Jesus on His way outside the city to be crucified. By 3:00 in the afternoon, it is finshed.

This is part 2 of the conversation that Twila and I began in our previous episode. Last week we talked about Passover, how it was celebrated then and how it is celebrated now. I shared some of my personal story about growing up in a religious system that was rooted in the Old Covenant and in that tradition we celebrated the Passover instead of Easter. So if you weren't able to listen to that episode I encourage you to go back to episode 37. Then come back and join us for the next part of one of the most important nights in history.

There are four more episodes in our Mark series.

Was the Last Supper a Passover seder?
We land in a beautiful portrait of a woman pouring out a fragrant act of devotion and worship at the feet of Jesus. Mark doesn't tell us her name. John, however, tells us she's Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus. Mark wants us to focus on her beautiful light filled worship. Mark strategically sandwhiches her between a dark plot of the chief priests and the treachery of Judas.
Mark is painting a dark picture of the human heart. The human heart seeks to use God. We treat God as a means to an end. What can I get from God?
Twila and I discuss the indignant reactions of the guests. When it comes to Jesus, we are quick to say moderation. Mary's lavish devotion made everyone uncomfortable. Like us, this might hit a little close to home for you.

I'm joined for this episode by my friend Amy Crump. Amy is truly a servant. She was a great guest co-host to have for this lesson and conversation. Mark 10:45 is the key verse in Mark. Jesus says this to his disciples in the context of James and John asking for seats of honor in His kingdom.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

We are going to the Mount of Transfiguration. I have long loved the transifiguration, but doing a deep dive into this climactic event in the life and ministry of Jesus has increased my love of it exponentially. I understand why some orthodox faith traditions celebrate the transfiguration. My co-host for this episode was my friend Amy Crump. We had a great time geeking out over all the connections we made back to the Old Testament.

In this episode, we're talking about four verses that pack a punch. When Jesus mentioned the cross for the first time in Mark, I think you could've heard a pin drop. I believe these verses are still a little shocking to us or at the very least when we read them we feel the weight of what Jesus is saying. Join Kimberly and I for a weighty lesson. We may sometimes need a no pain no gain attitude in following Jesus. The way of the cross has a lot of unexpected turns.
We do have a lighthearted start and I think our bright spots remind us that a hard time isn't the end of the story.
In following Jesus there is always joy set before us.

This episode comes with a little cautious warning, because some of the things that historically happened at Caesarea Philippi are things you want to protect little ears from hearing.
For the rest of us knowing about the pagan region Jesus took His disciples to ask this very important question sheds so much light on His mission. I draw so much strength from knowing that Jesus established His Church at a place known as "the Gates of Hell". There's no reason to panic about the Church. We can also learn from Peter's example that one minute we may confess Jesus as the Messiah, but the next minute get badly off track.

This episode flows right out of my personal walk with the Lord. Even though we're in a Mark series, we're going to take a side trip to Matthew. I personally needed to be reminded that an ordinary guy with growing faith also walked on water. I needed to spend some time in Matthew's account. My prayer is: Teach me to value the times my faith sinks. This is when I regain focus on Jesus. He's the one who does the doing. "Help me, Lord" is always a good prayer to pray.
We give lots of shout outs to Beth Moore in this episode. I saw her recently in Lexington, and Twila shares how Beth taught her to pray: Give me faith and give me faith that sustains me.
Thanks friends for listening! We pray God strengthens you in our times spent together.

In this episode, we take a step back from our Mark series. We consider the life and ministry of Jesus. Something we might miss in the accounts of healings, miracles, crowds, and religious opposition is that the ministry of Jesus was about restoration. Restoring people from the fallout of living in a fallen world. Jesus restored broken people on His way to being broken for all people. Jesus is our only hope for an eternal restoration. Revelation assuress us, "He will make all things new." We love this, but how can we experience a taste of Eden Restoration in our here and now? I need it now. I need a way to experience restoration in the wake of desolation. I've found a way to tap into the restoration within me. I want you to know this wonderful place within you.

Welcome! I'm happy to have you at our table. In this episode, we dug into a healing Jesus did in a Gentile area that Mark is the only gospel writer to inculde in his gospel. We found a treasure in this episode. A Greek word search led me to Isaiah 35. This Isaiah chapter paints a beautiful picture of restoration that comes after desolation. When Jesus healed this man, He gave us a picture of restoration of this man. Being deaf and hardly able to speak had him living in desolation, until he met Jesus. This healing made me want to shout for joy! I know there are far better things ahead for all of us in Christ. I can't wait!

Mark 7:24-30
In this episode, we shared some of our mama bear stories before talking about the faith of this Gentile mama, who was willing to beg Jesus for her daughter's healing. She had great faith in Jesus. It's easy for us to read this account and get our feelings hurt or feel confused over the "children's bread", "crumbs", and especially "dogs" being used in the discussion between Jesus and the woman. Join us at the table.
In episode 24, Kimberly and I chat about her recent vacation and some books we're reading.
I teach a lesson on the very familiar story where Jesus takes a nap on a boat in the middle of wind storm. Mark includes a small detail that the other gospel writers omit: Jesus was asleep on a cushion.
This would make a fantastic pillow verse! I may have one in the works.
Kimberly and I both discuss some storms that happened in our families at almost the same time. We both endured storms during early 2021, but Jesus wasn't asleep. He worked sovereignly in our storms. Jesus still speaks, "Peace! Be still!"
Jesus knows how to take the breath out of the wind.
Mark 4:35-41
In this episode, Julie and Twila recount family vacation stories and how they feel about the Fourth of July. They also have a discussion about the dreaded and unavoidable conflicts of life. Where there are people, places, and things there will conflicts and misunderstandings.
Mark 3:20-21, 31-35 are the verses for the Bible lesson.

In episode 22, we encounter some drama over a Sabbath healing. The Pharisee's are so upset over Jesus sabbath day healing in a synogogue. They join forces with their enemies the Herodians to plot to kill Jesus. Then the inspection crew from Jerusalem, accuse Jesus of being in cahoots with Satan in the "Beelzebub" controversy. The only ones conspiring with their enemies was the Pharisees because they are livid that Jesus doesn't observe their Sabbath traditions. They in turn make Jesus table flipping mad.
We wrap up with a discussion about the unpardonable sin. What is it? Should Christians be worried about committing it?

On episode 20, we follow the account of Jesus encountering a man with leprosy. To have leprosy meant you were forced to live in isolation. Your only community were other lepers. You couldn't go home, go to work, or go anywhere other people were. We can all agree this would make for a miserable existence. So if this was your life, but you heard about a man who could make you well, wouldn't you do whatever it takes to get to this man?
I admire the courage of this man. He risked all he had left to get to Jesus. Mark wrote that Jesus was indignant. This is a shocking word to use. We discuss why Mark chose this word to describe Jesus' emotional response to the man before He healed him.
We engaged in a conversation that made the three of nervous to have on a podcast. We talked about our personal experiences of being friends with people in the LGBTQ community. The fact that we were nervous tells me this was a conversation that we needed to have. Friends, we believe the Church has to do a better job of having these conversations. Open up your hearts and welcome people to your table. There are people all around us who would like to just be able to get in the room to learn about Jesus and what it takes to follow Jesus. What can we do to help them encounter Jesus?

In episode 19, we seized the pause in the action to talk about prayer. We pulled some content from The Pause app. This tool and John’s book, Resilient have become a favorite resource for us. I wanted us to have a conversation to empower us all to flip the religion out of our prayer time. I’m sure religion has tried to hijack your prayer time a few times.
Prayer is a most essential piece to our spiritual formation. Through Christ we’ve been reconnected to our Father. We have access to His presence. We pray to the Father through the Spirit in the name of Jesus. Being connected to the Holy is sacred. It’s not a chore. It’s not meant to be a burden. There’s no wrong way to pray. Not praying is a problem. We want you to develop skills that will enhance your prayer time.
This teaching and conversation is incomplete, but it’s a good place for us to start. In the episode I say at one point I rebelled against the early morning prayer. This is in no way meant to say I think prayer first thing in the morning is not the best time to pray. I want you to know the worst option is not praying at all. There have been seasons praying first thing in the morning wasn’t my best time. I was groggy and distracted. I was going through religious motions. Live in freedom from religion friends. Talk to your Dad. But our Dad does expect us to grow up in spiritual disciplines. Prayer isn't a religious task. Prayer is a blood bought privilege to have a conversation with God Most High. You have access to the highest authority over all things. Why would we want to skip this gift?

Jesus is amazing! My ears perk up every time in the gospels Jesus leaves His audience amazed. In Mark 1, Jesus teaches a message that leaves the audience amazed. Jesus continues to amaze the synagogue crowd by His authority over an unclean spirit.
Twila and Julie share stories about messages that left them amazed and inspired. Then, the three of us have a discussion about spiritual oppression. Kimberly reads some scriptures that are great verses to use in our prayer lives against the oppression of the enemy.

Fast talking and fast moving Mark is stealing our hearts. Our love for Mark’s gospel is on the rise. We’re sticking with Mark’s perspective on two big events in the life of Jesus: His baptism and the forty days in the wilderness. Mark goes all out with five verses. We’re in Mark 1:9-13. Mark wrote his gospel at a swift pace. The action moves quickly and he is expecting us to put some things together. It seems he hopes we already know the Biblical narrative. So, when he begins with a prophecy throwback in chapter one verses two and three, he is expecting us to jump right in and run with him. There's a voice crying out in the wilderness. We meet John the Baptist in the wilderness preparing the way for the One who comes next. The One John doesn't even worthy to untie His sandals.
I talked about how religion can't turn us around. Religion is unsustainable. We discussed how everyone who takes refuge in religion will find themselves in need of a permanent table flip. We need the One John was preparing the way for. Twila and Kimberly both share some of their testimonies about how Jesus flipped the religion table in their lives. You will want to stay with us to here their baptism stories.

I'm so proud of this episode. We bring some conversation to the table as examples of ways Jesus has been flipping tables in our lives. The "breaking news" is the three of us don't agree on everything. We've learned how to laugh and love each other in spite of different views on things that shouldn't divide us. Having these conversations are good for us. We don't cancel one another. Instead we love the follow the Table Flipper and instead choose to love one another. I'm excitd for you to listen to "Bring the Drama" which actually isn't about us.
We're kicking off a series on Mark's gospel. Mark gives his readers a portrait of Jesus as the Suffering Servant. He writes a fast pace. We explored some reasons Mark took an "immediately" approach. We talked about ginger and cardamom, Secret Church, persecution, and so many other things.

On this episode, we use Matthew's geneology as a springboard to jump way back into the Old Testament narrative. It was a treat to have a lesson and conversation around my favorite Hebrew word, Hesed. Women love to study and talk about Ruth. There are numerous Bible studies written on Ruth. The "where you go" verses make their way into many a wedding ceremony.
This is a beautiful love story, and I'm not talking about Ruth meeting Boaz in a grain field. But, that's a nice bonus love story, especially since it teaches us about the abounding, steadfast, unfailing love of God.
Ruth inspires and challenges us. Would we do what she did? Would we be willing to risk living a destitute life in a foreign land to remain loyal to our mother-in-law?
Ruth was an outsider. She was familiar with grief. Even though she had already lost so much, she was willing to lay her life down to remain with Naomi. Naomi brings Ruth to Bethlehem with very little hope.
God's not mentioned in this little book. Yet, He is very much present as the sovereign God working behind the scenes, writing a love story worthy of His Son's family tree.

Her testimoney about the transition from, "I'm forgiven" to "Walking with God" is not only inspiring, but it's beautiful encouragement for us all. Hey friends, Welcome to this episode of Flipping Tables. We’re going to be having a conversation around some of Jesus’s final words to His disciples. This is conversation Jesus had with His remaining eleven disciples on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane.
Julie along with the Flourish team, Twila and Kimberly, had a great conversation about bearing fruit for the Kingdom. You're listening to this epsiode after Easter, we want to encourage you with an “In light of the Resurrection, what should I do next” conversation.

I had the pleasure of having our first guest, Christina Millican, on the show. I hope you enjoy learning about her and the work her mission is doing in Uganda.
Living Stones Mission is an organization dedicated to rescuing and restoring victims of poverty and sexual exploitation in Kampala, Uganda. What began as the personal pursuit of three friends over a kitchen table in Lexington, KY has become an international non-profit making real change in the lives of the youth in Africa.

The final week of Jesus' earthly ministry has some interesting events and interactions with the religious leaders. For example, why did Jesus curse a fig tree? Jesus also told a series of parables at the temple. We have a conversation around Jesus cursing the fig tree and some of these parables from Matthew 21.
Join Julie, Twila, and Kimberly at the table for what we hope is an insiteful conversation.

Zechariah 14:3-4
We’re taking a deep dive into Matthew 21. In fact, there’s so much content we want to go through, we’re releasing two episodes this week. We hope you listen to these episodes as you get ready for Easter.
My Flourish girls and I had a great time discussing these important scenes from the final week of Jesus’s ministry. This all likely happened on one day or maybe over two days. Jesus knows how to maximize His time. There’s an intensity about Him. He’s a man on a mission. Jesus is making big statements with not only His words but His actions. When I read this chapter, I’m on the edge of my seat hanging onto every word and thing He does.

What makes you indignant? Are these things that would also make Jesus table flipping mad?
We want Jesus to flip tables in us that are obstructing the way for sinners to get to the Father.
Are you personally a “house of prayer”?

We're dedicating this episode to the girls following Jesus. We know it's tough being a woman for a lot of reasons, and sometimes the local church doesn't make it easy for women to use their gifts to serve Jesus.
Eve's daughters are tired. In recent years #metoo and #churchtoo have brought conversations to the table that have been hard for us to stomach.
We believe Jesus values the contributions of women to His Kingdom. The Church needs women flourishing in the body of Christ. I'm joined by Twila and Kimberly for this conversation. We really are just getting this conversation started. We hope you will keep it going. I hope ladies you're encouraged by our conversation. We see you, and so does Jesus.

We get this espisode started with a discussinon between the Flourish team about qualites we look for in traveling companions.
We're going to be in John 1:43-51 discussing Jesus calling Phillip, who in turn goes to find his friend Nathaniel to bring him to Jesus. There's some really good things in the calling of these two friends. John is the only gospel writer to include this in the gospels. We're so glad he did.
In this episode Julie and Twila are joined by Kimberly. It was so fun to have the whole Flipping Tables team together for this one. We recorded this one almost as soon as we got home from IF: Gathering in Dallas. We love IF! This was our first time going to the actual event. We usually go local. It exceeded our expectations in every possible way.
We recap some our favorite take aways from event. Warning: We're super fired up! I have come home with a new slogan, some fresh wind in my sails, and we're all three ready to run hard for Jesus.
This episode might not be the one to listen to while you're driving.
If you're enjoying the Flipping Tables, share it with some friends. There's room for everyone at the table. I'd love for you to leave us a rating and review, and share this episode to your socials.

Jesus calling a tax collector was a pretty scandlous thing for him to do. In this episode we talk about Matthew's calling and the dinner party that Jesus attended at Matthew's house.
We discuss our love for dinner parties, and the occasional cocktail, we might serve or partake of at a gathering, which is sometimes a little controversial among church folk. This conversation is a gentle push back on a churchy culture that I believe might be more bothered by Jesus breaking bread with sinners than we like to discuss. So, in a flipping tables kinda way, Twila and I get the conversation started.
Sunday Brunch: My Flourish team wants to invite you to brunch. Local friends if you're up for gathering around an actual table to break bread on a Sunday, I'd love for you to send us a message. We're planning on gathering at DV8 Kitchen on March 12th at 11:00am. We'd love to get to know some of our listners.

On this episode we drop in on two big events on the Southern Steps. One that we know very little about and one that started an unstoppable movement. Welcome to the table! We're happy you're here.

In this bonus episode, Twila and I discuss the move of the Spirit happening in our neck of the woods. We are in awe of what God's doing among Gen Z. It's given us so much hope for the Church's future. Spread, baby spread! We pray that this is a new global move of God taking the gospel out from Wilmore, KY to the ends of the earth.

This is the second part of Julie sharing her story. My goal is for you to get to know me. I tell parts of my story that I don't normally tell. The reason I'm telling it now is I think it's important to bring attention to God's work in ordinary people. I hope you are encouraged by God's work in my life. I love to hear about God's work in other peoples lives. Those stories leave me in awe of God. God's works are awesome and that He draws near to engage with people is awe inspiring.
Eek! I can't believe I'm launching a podcast. I love listening to a wide variety of podcasts. In my very first episode, I'm pleased to share my journey to becoming a podcast host. This is part one of a two part conversation I had with my good friend and co-host Twila. We're excited to have you join us on this new adventure.
