There are many voices in the drinks industry. A cacophony of opinion, thought, and ego fill our earwaves with things they want us to know. Many voices carry weight, others carry the aural equivalent of a sluice gate being opened into our front rooms. But now is not the time for more of this, no. Now IS the time for questions to be asked, truths to be faced, and trousers to be let out. Ferg and Lee have finally, and under much duress, opened their mailboxes and inbags, and read, perused, and utterly ignored the millions of letters that have been flooding in. It's been quite the task to whittle these questions down, but our hosts have intrepidly sought out the letters that pose the most interesting and challenging thought experiments. Their will be some expected correspondents, and some truly surprising ones. Here we don't tell you what we want you to hear, we're not narcissistic enough for that. No, we answer YOUR questions. So, sit in the big black chair, sit only in the spotlight, and your time starts on Thursday morning when TM&TM: Oat Milk hits the podocean.
Did Alan Partridge ever truly settle the discussion of who is the best lord? Do you have conversations down the pub about what is the best guitar solo? Who was the best bladder kicker, or other similar things that we simply can't be bothered to come up with? Then this is an episode for you. Or maybe not. Listen or don't, you're choice. Ferg and Lee finally come round to the hot topic, hashtag sensitive, issue of the moment: what is the best drink? There are propositions, hypotheses, and many conjectures. There is consensus and disagreement, often simultaneously. Do you agree with our hosts' choices? Would you like to suggest alternatives? Is a final and unanimous conclusion reached? TM&TM: Dignity Under Cabin Pressure topping the opinion polls from Thursday morning.
A fiery sun falls into a calm ocean, ending its day an expectant audience sit in the agora, awaiting knowledge and wisdom. The philosopher steps forward, drawing his gaze from the Acropolis to the gathered few, he sighs, stroking his moustache and beard. He prefers to bring thought, to pose questions, and understand exactly what the hell is going on. Soon, the pregnant pause becomes the ultimate chaos. The world crumbles, following the sun into the sea. Words fill the air, only to be long forgotten. Three lifetimes of wonder and nonsense reduced to questionable audio quality. Witnesses would gladly drink hemlock just to end it all. Greek wine. That's what we talk about. With the exceptional Mike Boyne.
Have you Been To?Been to?Bin Two?Been To?Have you Bin Two Bin Two?Abbott & Costello continue ad infinitum We ask, where has Mike Boyne Bin Two. Where is he now? And just how long has he wanted to be a slug balancer? Yes, Friend Of The Pod and Industry Legend Mike Boyne rejoins us in TM&TM Towers to share thoughts on the trade, running and indie, staffing, wine selection, and showing off his huge guns. So pour a brandy, grab a fruit rollup, and let's talk about the industry.
Are you a competitive person? Is your own self worth based on challenging someone else to something (largely completely unimportant or irrelevant)? Do you actively seek the approval of others; especially strangers or people you are desperate to impress through the medium of a shiny thing? What is a wine competition? Just who is being awarded and for what purpose? Do you wish you could achieve 100 points out of a maximum of 5 stars? None of this, and less, in our next episode: The Komax Biokips Sandwich Containers (Set of 3) available to pilot your advisor from Thursday morning. This episode is (not in any way) sponsored by The IEWA, for whom Ferg and Lee were judge and a panel chair respectively and Bristol's IMMENSE Pasture Restaurant; purveyors of the finest steak this side of Argentina.
That's it folks. The history books will need to be rewritten. They will now just say 'Ferg bought a Volvo.' Everything else will just be a footnote. Included in that footnote will be an intricate and detailed précis of how Ferg also fell into the world of Low and No Alcohol. And how he fell into the world of Rosé. It's like Ferg has set out to make something specifically to annoy Lee. That's all too easy to do these days. Ferg gets technical, Lee asks a combination of useful, insightful questions alongside some utter nonsense. But it's genuinely interesting. More interesting than a Volvo. Wow, as I write that I realise exactly what TM&TM has become. We need to rewrite the history books indeed. TM&TM: So I Bought A Volvo, reversing into your cul de sac on Thursday morning. #wine #podcast #winecast #lowandno #rosewine
Many industry commentators have not suggested how Ferg & Lee have been known to wander off on existential tangents. Literally millions of global wine drinkers have not noticed Lee's predilection for both dismissing the very concept of time, and his deep love of the one true sport, the sport upon which all others are based: snooker. In a similar instance of 'somebody not noticing something' Ferg had not heard the news about the Snooker World Championship staying at the hallowed Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. What's this got to do with wine, and a wine podcast? Lee has rare talent. Rare in that it has not been seen and is likely non-existent. In one swift move he can turn ANY conversation to snooker. Yep, it's one of those episodes. What is the true nature of wine? What is its value? How does one 'truly enjoy wine?'; this is a selection of questions asked and not necessarily answered. In a shocking twist, Ferg wants to learn more about not just Claret, but also the green baize. In a past life on social media (before he grew up and shut it all down) Lee was particularly not well known for interacting with Triple Crown Winner Shaun Murphy AND MC extraordinaire Phil Seymour. Think we can do a collab of snooker meets wine? We can off The Onefourseven podcast a tour of a winery and vineyards with a man known as 'Former England's Youngest Winemaker' and his cohost who 'Once made a 47 break'. We're sure they have FAR better things to do than bother with this nonsense though. And who can blame them. Anyway...there's an episode out Thursday morning; keen-eared listeners may notice some callbacks to an episode that hasn't aired yet. WE GOT BEYOND META. So, rack them up, chalk your cue, and the clock will start the next time you press play.
Birds, birds, birds. How do they know? What do they know? What have they got to do with this podcast? Nothing actually. Nada. What does concern this episode is Ferg's visit to the incomparable Shaw & Smith. You may know for making awesome wine. Ferg knows them for both this, and their charcuterie. Please let it be noted that this was not an officially sanctioned TM&TM Beano and was entirely self-funded by Ferg. Nor was an invitation extended to the man often referred to as 'The Lesser Of The Two TM&TM Hosts.' So yeah. That's what this one is about. Set your toast to medium/light and get ready to barrel ferment. Episode live in aisle five from Thursday morning. #podcast #wine #winecast #firstnotsecond #Australianwine
Here's some blurb... You may have noticed we write quite a bit of copy to highlight our episodes and what they're about. This takes literally minutes out of our day and well, we can't be bothered. Does anyone read it? Do you just look at the expertly photoshopped pictures? Do you even listen to the audio bit? Research suggests not. TM&TM: 182007 out from Thursday morning. #podcast #wine #winecast #originalsnotcopyists #upwithoriginalthoughtdownwithbullshit
We're not afraid of the big questions here at TM&TM. Questions like “will you stop that?”, “In which aisle will I find the quince paste?” And “is this your rootstock sir?” Today however we tackle possibly the biggest of all big questions: what IS Lee? Specifically what does he actually do? If you've ever heard Lee speak (for which we do profusely apologise but we accept no responsibility, liability, or culpability) he does his best to not answer. This leads us down a winding path of the nature of his work, but also a deeper look at the nature of the charity for whom he works. There may be tangents, there could possibly be non sequiturs, and some of you may not make it...but it is a sacrifice we are prepared to face.So get your textbooks out, put your phones on silent, and face the front as we delve into the world of an educator educator.#wine #podcast #winecast #waitwehavesomethingtosay #wineeducation
Do you like wine? Do you like soup? Do you like satire? Then Batman voice You're going to love this Ferg and Lee had a plan. They'd exchanged notes, wHattsuppps, messages, and even emails. Then the record button got pressed and the walls came crashing down as if it was Jericho relived. They say the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and while we can't really comment on that, we can say that the brave souls who walk this road are likely doing so on a diet of soup. This episode contains 250% of your RDA of utter nonsense but there are some flecks of gold to find amongst the mud and soil. What can wine learn from the soup industry? What can satirists do to survive these dark times? Just where have Ferg and Lee been on their travels recently? All this and, well, not really much more in an episode that is already being described as 'loose', 'hard going', and 'is this the last dying voice of podcasting?'. Prepare all of your systems to be nervous as you pipe this lunacy directly into your limbic system... Highly unlikely anyone would like this.
Ferg & Lee travel to Brazil, on the run, hunted by a relentless listener demanding content (hashtag: Ferg's mum), and in desperate need of a score. Identifying a bank vault filled to the brim with satire, angst, and whimsy, they decide to go all out and steal it. Wait, that's not quite the plot (if it could be called that) of one of them there Fust & Farious films. If you thing this is absurd, wait until you hear what Ferg & Lee discuss this season. Yes, season. We're back, and more middle aged than ever (Ferg prematurely so). After a long break, not long enough according to some industry commentators, The Maker & The Merchant return with their own brand of...err, stuff. It's a bumper episode to kick off season 5. Is this because there's lots to cover? Is it because of a glut of wine trade happenings that urgently need discussed? Is it because we want to give you, the listener, incredible value for money? No, none of these. It's becasue we don't use timers in the office nor actually script what we do. Prepare for our regular 'This Is The News' feature, which at the time of recording was highly topical and insightful...who knows how it will sound now. Ferg updates us on the day his carer signed an official agreement to keep an eye on him indefinitely, and we review what has been described as 'The Best Vintage We Have Ever Seen' So, strap in, take a tranquiliser, and ready your ears for some incredible and valuable insights couched in the language of insanity. It's good to be back. 2025 to be clear, no '24, 0r '23, or...you get the idea.
Well, the event of the summer has happened and we’re all thrilled (but y’know, there’s comes a point when you need to stop going on about it.) Ferg and Bethan have exchanged vows, rings, and secret family hot toddy recipes and have been officially pronounced bacon and egg. They are husband and wife and we at TM&TM could not be more thrilled. So thrilled we’ve let Ferg have one more episode off.
Despite the lack of the greater of our two hosts we continue with our PDO Series apace. In his stead we have 2 heavyweights of the modern industry. A man who cannot decide if he is from The Princess Bride or Highlander but who is producing some of England’s most consistently interesting and excellent wines for Vagabond, Senior Jose Quintana. He goes toe to toe, mano a mano, cheek to cheek with everybody’s favourite democratic winemaker and winner of fictional awards (and real ones too) Alex Brogan.
Way back in the mists of time, these 2 members of the wine intelligencia had what they termed a ‘lively discussion’ about the concepts of a PDO over a South African braai. They agree to repeat this discussion, to the best of the sober abilities, through the medium of a wine based podcast. We look at the history, purpose, and relevance of PDOs and importantly ask who it actually benefits.
It's a great, informed discussion that raises as many questions as are perhaps answered. There’s a lot of food for thought here. Does it matter as to the origin of that food? We’re not sure, but we know it’s both nutritious and delicious.
With our enormous thanks to Jose and Alex for their time, considered insights, and thought provoking comments and discussion.
Shout outs to @vagabondwines who are someone you should be keeping your eye on for a number of reasons and to @geyerwineco who provided the juice to keep Jose going during the recording. Alex himself was drinking one of his own wines (we do call him out for this) but also some fine liquid from @gianluca_colombovini, with whom he is about to head out to for the next @notyetnamedwineco vintage.
TM&TM: Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes defining your terminology from Thursday morning.
This weekend will see an event take place that can only be described as 'A Wedding'. Yes, our very own Ferg, your favourite of our 2 hosts, is committing his life not to wine, but to the marvellous Bethan. No we're not sure either. Of course this means the Ferg has been rather busy and scheduling in a recording has been more challenging than usual. This is of course misdirection as it's really bloody Lee's fault (he has his usual litany of excuses about homework eating his cat and his gravity being switched off). As a result, this is the shortest episode of TM&TM of all time. So what's actually in it then? Lee shares a few thoughts on musings on the man who is not just is cohost, but one of his closest friends. More importantly we feature special guests @saturday.kitchen (by pulling the audio from a recording and really hope that's ok) as @knackeredmother not only chose one of Ferg's wines to feature, but gave Bethan and her soon to be husband a shout out! @matt.tebutt offered his congratulations and importantly @weemissbea seemed to enjoy the rosé (although like Lee, she's not necessarily a fan of the category - top work). Due to Lee being disorganised he didn't give everyone time to respond, but there are a few surprise visits from some of Ferg's friends and a super special cameo appearance from everyone's favourite friend @buxtagram. Please join us in raising your glasses in celebration of Bethan and Ferg and in wishing them the happiest life together! TM&TM: walking down your aisle from Thursday morning.
We welcome back friend of the pod and TM&TM Alumnus (alumni? aluminati?) Mr Henry Jeffreys in the first of our episodes focused on PDO.What is a PDO? Are you a PDO? Are we a PDO? (PDOI? AlumiPDO?). Importantly, what is a PDO supposed to be and who does it represent. We consider it from multiple angles; does it benefit producers? Consumers? Do consumers know or even care? When it comes to English wine and positioning it both domestically and in the export markets what is the relevance of further legislation and does it help or hinder sales? How does it fit with both a singular and wider brand? From handpicking to discussing what's in a name we attempt to start unlocking the conversation that is becoming ever more frequent in the lands of English wine. Several bombs are dropped, by both our magnificent guest and Ferg himself...you'll be delighted to know that Lee wasn't around for this one. It was actually the only thing on Henry's rider; his equivalent of Van Halen and their dislike of brown M&Ms. With huge thanks to Henry for his time and sharing his deep insights on the subject. TM&TM: The Tabards, The Lanyards, The High Viz Vests, regulating your labels from Thursday morning. #podcast #wine #winecast #Englishwine #PDO #rulesandregulations @fergelias @henrygjeffreys
Where exactly was Ferg born? Does her qualify as northern, and if so, by how much? Importantly, does it really matter? As with all good disagreements, it is resolved (virtually) in the pub. Lee talks about the best pubs of his hometown before mentioning his favourite hostelry in his adopted home of Bicester. The Plough @the_olive_tree_pub_company is surely the town's highlight. Thinking of pubs; we know the best place for a Grand Cru in Burgundy is in the middle of the hill, but does the same rule apply to pubs? Tune in to learn more. From the nature of the pub itself we cover another vital topic of interest to our dear listener (#Fergsmum), just how many books have Ferg and Lee read so far this year? The answer will shock you. Then comes the meat and potatoes of our episode this week, or perhaps the apple pie...we uncover some revealing statistics about the US wine industry and Ferg regales us with tales of his recent visit to promote his wines. Where did he go? Just what is the perception of English wine across the pond, and is this perception consistent across cities and states? What are the opportunities and considerations for branding and positioning of wines from England? (and Wales of course). Ferg talks vehicles, how Americans prefer their sparkling wine, and reveals how attending his first ball game nearly lead to him becoming a middle class, degree holding Tony Montana. We also ask Ferg just how much he can lift and discuss the relevance and future of post-nominals. Which of our hosts is prouder of theirs? Finally, we discuss voting for oneself in competition and the perfect composition of a tasting panel. All this and, well, this, on TM&TM: The Lake Dispute uniting your states from Thursday morning.
Have you ever wondered what happens on a winemaker's stag do? Exactly how middle class was Ferg's experience and what exactly happened to his ankle? It's a bumper episode of stuff and waffle but there's a lot of ground covered (unlike Ferg's attempt to play 'Territory'). In a change to the usual order of things, Lee reads the news which smooths seamlessly into some VERY bad impressions, discussions of orphans, wild tigers, and ankle injuries, and a blow by blow account of Ferg's stag do. We ask 'Exactly how far away IS Norfolk?' (especially if you're trapped in a car with Lee). How many pints is optimum and just who has the best Macallan? From here we finally discuss something wine related with talk of The London Wine Fair; Lee extolls the virtues again of @hatchmansfield (specifically looking at Chapoutier, Zuccardi, and some cool new cans from @villamariawines) and Ferg asks if there is a bigger opportunity for WineGB to play a part. Out of nowhere we review films and sitcoms, with a special shout out to Paddington. Sandwiched between all this and Ferg showing off about his rosé we make some official announcements. Friends of the pod @notyetnamedwineco have some upcoming events YOU should definitely look at, one of them featuring @uk_phelps. The tremendous @thewinesociety1874 have launched some very exciting fine wine tasting kits (utilising other friends of the pod @ecosipwine revolutionary packaging). And finally it seems Lee will be out in wild hosting an event at @oxfordwinefest in September.
Well dear listener, you enjoyed last week's episode with Oneka John so much, we've asked her back for a Part II. This week we uncover the challenges and potential pitfalls of importing wine into Barbados. While there are some things more unique to this beautiful island, we uncover some universal truths about forecasting, cash flow, and the perennial Ops vs. Sales. We also raise the question once again as to whether wine is an FMCG product (bet you can't guess what we think). From there we consider the community surrounding wine and how to make it more accessible and inviting. Oneka talks about her Perfectly Paired events and how she uses her immense market and product knowledge to invite, excite, and engage a wide variety of consumers in the burgeoning wine scene. We look at how WSET works in the classroom setting and how it can be amended and utilised in the more consumer focused arenas. Just what is quality and how can we encourage drinkers into the discussion. There's a lot here that will resonate and shows how the challenges and opportunities echo across the trade globally. Once again, with enormous thanks to our wonderful guest Oneka for finding the time to talk to Lee, and apologies that Ferg wasn't on hand to do a proper job. TM&TM: Perfectly Paired Sandying your Lane from Thursday morning. @onekajohn @vignobleswineconsultancy @fergelias #podcast #wine #winecast #Barbados #import #distribution.
Where is Ferg? Is he over there? Maybe he's over here? What we can say is he's nowhere to be found on this episode. Travelling for work or some noise. Given that the general approach of TM&TM is to record 2 friends talking, we have continued in that vein as Lee talks to one of his closest friends (we are amazed to learn he has them too), the wonderful Oneka John. Oneka John is a wine educator and communicator living and working in Barbados. We learn how Oneka started on her wine journey, and how she had the misfortune of running into the lesser of our 2 hosts. From there we explore the culture surrounding wine consumption in Barbados and examine the macro and micro trends and how they do (or indeed do not) reflect the larger global feel of wine consumption. There's talk of history, migration, and the way wine captures a huge amount of social, religious, and geographical changes. Oneka discuss the differences in wines to be found in local rum shacks all the way up to prestigious hotel and restaurant settings, with great insight from her time 'Selling down the trade' and extensive HORECA experience. We touch on consumer attitudes and potential opportunities (before we dive into this in more detail in our follow up episode) Having no Ferg is rough on the pod, and we couldn't trust it with Lee, but we think you'll agree that Oneka is a fabulous guest. TM&TM: It's Good To Wake Up In Paradise Pudding your souse from Thursday morning. @fergelias @onekajohn @vignobleswineconsultancy #podcast #wine #winecast #Barbados
We knew you wouldn't be happy with only 1 episode dedicated to and filled with the lustrous rich tones of Christian Helsvig A.K.A. Our Man In Norway. Not wanting to lose out on that rich timbre and deep knowledge, we flew Ferg back out to @vin_oslo (with huge thanks to them once again for hosting) to continue the conversation from last week. Having touched on the inner and outer workings of the Norwegian Monopoly and interrogating some sales data, in this episode we find ways of asking similar questions in multiple ways. There's a strong cultural focus this time as we look at seasonal trends, Buckfast (still not sure why to be honest) and a truly amazing sales statistic. We also finally bring back our favourite patented TM&TM game in the form of [guest name][affirmative][guest name][negative]. As we cast an eye to the future of wine consumption in Norway Christian shares a piece of thought and insight that is perhaps the most profound thing ever uttered on this podcast and that has wide reaching implications for us all. Ferg and Christian also finally get something to eat; tune in to find out what's on the menu.
We've heard Ferg talk about Norway, wine in Norway, trips to Norway, and brown cheese but can we really take him at his word? Is all this just the romanticism of drinking Balfour Brut Rosé whilst pining for the fjords? TM&TM Senior Leadership made the groundbreaking decision that Ferg should return to this magnificent country but gain insight and intel from a real man on the inside. Dear listener, we are delighted to introduce to you the mighty, the majestic, the outrageously handsome Christian Helsvig. Wine importer extraordinaire; Christian doesn't just set pulses racing, he's not just got his finger on the pulse of the Norwegian wine scene...he IS the pulse. We uncover the hows wheres and why of Christian's relationship with wine and starting his business. From here we engage in a perilous quest to understand the nuances, challenges, successes, and trends of wine in Norway. What works and what's hot? Where are the opportunities and just why do the Norwegians love English wine so much? This is an episode packed more tightly than a coiled sponge but fear not...there's a sequel in post-production. With huge thanks to @vino-oslo the fabulous wine bar for hosting Christian and Ferg during the recording and for keeping them well fed and watered. Lee remained in the hovel that is TM&TM Towers. TM&TM: Monopoloy Monopoly Wine Monopoly Properly sailing into the inlet on Thursday morning.
What came first: wine or existence itself? The answer might surprise you. But after tackling such a huge subject in our intro Ferg & Lee head into the mysterious world of Low & No. What exactly are these beverages and who is drinking them. Importantly, why are they drinking them and does the quality measure up? We consider where these products sit now against where they were, and just where they might be going. Are you a Low & No drinker? What are your favourites? Following this we somehow veer off into the world of beer, faults, and just how much Lee's standup is actually worth. Alongside the revelation that Ferg has a new Pinot we then consider wines, regions, and countries that may not be considered 'mainstream' but are nonetheless gaining some consumer attention. Where should we be looking for 'the next big thing'?Finally we touch on the concept of natural and minimal intervention. Covering the whos the whys and thewhats Ferg & Lee look for some definitions and conclusions.
Just what is an expert? Are you an expert? Do you know an expert? What about being a lieutenant (junior grade) of commerce? Ferg opens by telling us about his new moniker before we dive into the shocking news of declining Champagne sales. Who is not drinking Champagne? Why not? And just what are they drinking instead? We explore this piece of news with the rigorous investigative standards you would expect from TM&TM and attempt to understand the changing face of sparkling wine consumption in the UK. Where are the opportunities for non-Champagne fizz and what do they need to do to further engage and excite the drinker? TM&TM: Captain of Industry being fermented in bottle from Thursday morning.
What two things are aesthetically perfect in this world? Is one of them a vineyard in spring? As sure as spring follows winter there is an array of work to be completed in those vineyards and who better to guide us through this work than Supreme Head Chief Director of Wine, Winemaking, & News Generation, our very own Fergus Elias. In an unexpectedly corporate shift, he guides us through a SWOT analysis of an English vineyard in spring. Just what are the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that need to be considered? Have we mistimed our recording and release dates for this episode? How would things look if we had a whale's eye view? And just what do we need to think about when it comes to shoot thinning, spray timing, and labour efficiency? We include famous Bristolians, groundhog like prognostications, and learn just how exactly Lee convinced Jancis to publish something he'd written. This is more than just an allegory with a cork, this IS a 360 overhead real time big picture view of an English vineyard in Spring.
Logic, logic, logic...is the beginning of wisdom, not the end. But where does logic belong in a tasting note? If it belongs at all? Can something so abstract be articulated accurately? Can we construct a universally understood framework in the face of an uncaring, entropic, and non-objective reality? What is the very fabric of this thing of which we speak so freely and just who is it for? Yes...it's one of 'those' episodes dear listener. We delve into the concept of tasting notes and attempt to explore how they're constructed and what we hope to achieve in the process. Alongside this Lee finally defines his name and we learn exactly where you can procure the fruits of Ferg's labours. We learn more about how Ferg proposed to his beloved fiancée (and soon to be wife: EXCITED!) and Ferg answers one of Lee's longest held questions: What IS a boysenberry? We explore also the perils of talking to the public, the power of hydrogen, reducing sugars, and ethanol as well as asking what YOU in the trade want from wine comms...and conversely what YOU the consumer would find helpful? All this and more in TM&TM: Heisenberg's Uncertain Tasting Note - quantumly entangled in a Hadron collision from Thursday morning. well, maybe not 'exactly'
Grapes: the final frontier. These are the recordings of The Maker & The Merchant. Their continuing mission: to explore strange new wines; to seek out new puns and new levels of humour; to boldly go where no pod has gone before! That's right. Ferg hasn't just attended the Next Gen Fruit Conference, he IS the Next Gen fruit conference. Wearing his finest starfleet dress uniform, Ferg gave a talk on growing grapes in the UK to some of the finest agricultural minds in the industry. But just what is The Next Gen Fruit Group? What is its Prime Directive, and can they redirect all power to forward shields? Joking aside we learn from Ferg about the differences in knowledge, understanding, and potentially foresight between UK fruit growers and grape growers. What are his key takeaways? Where can grape growers learn from those who grow top fruit and soft fruit (and, err, what is the difference between those two things?) As well as this we take a quick look at the large news of Majestic purchasing Enotria & Coe and what this may or may not mean for the trade and the UK wine consumer. There's also something about Ferg causing trouble in the middle east. TM&TM: A Critical Mass Of Talent available to beam down to the planet's surface from stardate 030425.
Do you like numbers? How about addition, multiplication, and addition? Do you have a keen interest in English wine of the economics of wine production? Are you interested in starting your own vineyard or winery? Then have we got an episode for you. In this mathematically heavy yet vital episode, Ferg guides Lee through the numbers and sums behind a bottle of English wine. Yes, there are the usual tangents, efforts at humour, and tenuous links, but at the heart of this episode beats a strong desire to unpick the real numbers and analyse just how the whole thing works. Ferg drops the numbers, Lee does the sums, and we end up a real-time breakdown of costs, a metaphysical discussion on the concept of labour, and a final number at how much you'll need to start you own winery. So strap in, put your accountant on speed dial, and prepare your abacus for TM&TM 1234. Available down the back of the sofa from Thursday morning.
Last week we teased Lee talking about some TV thing he's wangled his way into. This being Lee he does talk about it, but he talks about a load of other stuff first. That's right, this is a long haul. Firstly, Lee finally gets round to talking about Kingsbarn's Coaltown whisky, that he was kindly sent some time ago. Lee talks about his love and history with whisky and guides us through what sounds like a fabulous single malt. Lowland whisky, matured in ex-peated casks, and with more aromas and flavours than you can shake a quaich at. With sincere thanks to Charles Wilson and the Wemyss Family for this gifted bottle. We'll share shortly some advice on where and how to procure yourself a bottle or 3. Ferg fills us in on his busy schedule from sushi pairing and G-splitting to bottling and being buttered up, he continues to live at unimagineable speed. We ask all our listener to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't wear himself out before his stag do. Wedding, we mean wedding. That's obviously more important. Lee goes on (which is a complete sentence in itself) to explore a webinar he cohosted for his day job with the WSET and describes a little more about his day to day work. Then there's some noise about how he's an Oxford lecturer and then, the big reveal, which we revealed last week, that he is involved in a fabulous new wine TV concept. Just what is Incogvino? Who is in it? How can you find out more? Well, you can start by listening in here. So sit down, tune in, and pour a large dram for the podcast with a stellar cast...available next to the Soylent Green in Aisle 5 from Thursday morning...
The first thing we need to say about this week’s episode is that it follows straight on from last week’s. Which sounds obvious now we’ve written it down. But it does follow on, as in, we didn’t bother to record even the shortest, sweetest intro to remind you what happened last week. So, if you didn’t listen to last week there will be loads of gags, callbacks, and references and you’ll miss out. But we’ve warned you now so it’s on you.We continue our English wine introspective and ask not what can English wine do for you, but what can you do for English wine? How can we continue to grow, and what exactly is the role of the off-trade and how can we work together to build an unbeatable team of superheroe…English wine scene. We briefly cover Lee’s hobbies which seem to now include attempts at topical humour, considering wine terminology, and telling Richard Harris stories. Which naturally leads us to Shakespeare, asking what links James Bond and Indiana Jones, and asking our dear listener a big question. While Lee solidifies his nerd credentials, Ferg gets creative, and we consider just who owns the rights to TM&TM and exactly who it is all for? Lee drops a bombshell about recording a PILOT (and explains why this should be in upper case). So, Season 4 continues [should we insert an adjective to suggest to presence of momentum and excitement?] with TM&TM: Iambic Pentameter. Available to podcast from your download place this Thursday morning
We know the disappointment. We feel your pain. The ennui…yes, we’re back. And your worst fears have been realised: Lee has returned with us. For the one of you that missed Ferg’s witty and insightful commentary, and Lee’s…whatever, you can rejoice. TM&TM is back and being piped into your earboxes through the medium of sound. In our first episode back after a lengthy mid-season break Lee extolls the virtue of snooker (yes, it really does get off to a rocky start). Ferg takes us ‘under the hood’ of English wine. We’re not sure how that works or why he’s practicing to be an American. We move seamlessly from cats to duty rates and why they’re a brilliant thing and the best decision any government has ever made.If you’ve ever wondered what influencers and dolphins have in common, this is the show for you as we also ask ‘when is a middleman not a middleman’TM&TM: What A **** Shambles… available to lodpod from your castloads this Thursday morning. We’re back.
We know, we know—this episode is a bit late! With Lee off on a well-deserved summer holiday, Ferg took over the editing duties, which somehow turned into a 10-day epic. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait!
In this season finale, Ferg and Jack take the reins for the second part of our deep dive into the history of wine. From the Romans’ questionable attempts to cultivate vineyards in chilly Britain to the Dark Ages, where viticulture all but vanished, our dynamic duo explores how wine managed to survive and thrive in England against all odds. They dive into the role of monasteries in keeping the wine flowing through medieval times and how the love for a good glass of vino persisted despite plagues and freezing temperatures.
But it’s not all serious history! Expect plenty of laughs as Ferg and Jack debate the Romans’ wine-making skills and share how English wine made its comeback post-war. As they wrap up this two-part special—and the series—you'll find out why the story of wine in England is as much about resilience as it is about taste.
So, grab a glass and join us for one last toast before we cork it up for a well-earned break. Cheers! 🥂
The end is nigh, after 7 months and 42 episodes season 3 of The Maker and The Merchant is finally coming to a conclusion. Fear not however as we have two more episodes to share with you as we bring this season to a close prior to our summer break. Unfortunately Lee misread the communication from TM&TM hr and has already started his summer hols. Fortunately Ferg was joined by the inimitable Jack Merrylees, Marketing director at Balfour Winery and general history buff. This week Ferg and Jack desperately try to get from the first grape vine to "hommo Winemaker" the evolutionary state human attain prior to ascension. Expect random interludes when the chickpea curry arrives, a very loud cough Ferg wasn't able "to fix in post" and the regular inclusion of a rather loud German Shepherd. It's a fascinating episode leaving you, dear listener on a knife edge to hear more.
TM&TM Grubby Hole Diggers get it ere now
DEMOCRACY! We love it. Especially when it goes our way…and involves wine. But do democracy and wine meet anywhere? Sure, the Greeks drank plenty of wine and invented the concept, but what about today? Where are the winemaking heroes prepared to put big decisions back in our hands?Wait…should we leave non-experts to make such large and groundbreaking decisions? One man who has proved democracy is alive and well, and can be found in the wonderful world of wine is Alex Brogan (not an IWSC 30 Under 30 Winner as some mistakenly think) founder of The Not Yet Named Wine Company. Avid listener of the show will have heard not only his name before, but also the man himself; he appeared as a special guest on our well thought out live episode at The Sampler way back when.In today’s episode Lee (Ferg’s got a problem with his gravity and is still floating around the winery) talks to Alex about the origin of The Not Yet Named Wine Co, the first (discounting a one off American project over a decade ago) the bring democratic principles to the wine drinking masses. From concept to first vintage, we explore how the concept has progressed and understand more about the kind of options the community are able to make and influence.TNYNWC is more than just the wine though, with discussions and votes involving names, labelling, and many other things too. Also, the community involved have access to special events and Dictator Wines. Talking of events, there is still time for you to join an Arrival Party this Saturday 27th July…hit the social medias of TNYNWC website to join the fun.Beyond this we focus on the impending vintage 5, which will see Alex travel to Slovenia to carry out the demands of his faithful followers…and there is still time for you to join the action. As well as this, Alex shares stories of how the project is connecting people across continents, school trips, and an incident with a pig. With huge thanks to Alex for his time and sharing his fabulous story; we’re huge fans of this business and think you will be too.TM&TM: THE NOT YET NAMED WINE CO. available to castdown from your podloads on Thursday morning.@fergelias @wineman147 @alexanderjbrogan @notyetnamedwineco #wine #podcast #winecast #winetime #notyetnamedwineco #democracy #vote #voting
Welcome back dear listener. You can't help yourself can you? Following the ENORMOUS success of our English Wine Week series, Ferg & Lee review the week itself. From the big news of the week, to the announcement of the Wine GB awards, we name our favourites and highlight once again the exciting world of English Wine. Lee then raises of the question of just where to have a good wining and dining experience in Oxford. The city may be a seat of culture and learning, and be home to many great wine merchants, but where in town can you go for a great evening of Michelin recommended food and wine pairing? Lee it seems has the answer. He recently attended just such an event at Summertown's Pompette Restaurant. Under the expert guidance and tutelage of Suzy Nemeth, Lee traveled the world of the Loire with wines that were both excellent, and not necessarily obvious. Not only that, it was a culinary trip of excellence. Prepare to be regaled with tales of superb wines, excellent food, and a wonderful evening. Just think about how much it would have been if he wasn't there! Check out Pompette's website for details of future events and get yourself along if you're in the area. We send our thanks to everyone at Pompetter not only for giving Lee a wonderful evening, but also giving us a night off. So sit back, strap in, and enjoy HAVE YOU BEEN TO A WINE DINNER? In this week’s emergency episode, Fergus delves into the latest industry statistics released by Wine GB, accompanied by the wonderful Phoebe French, communications manager at Wine GB.
Unfortunately, Lee couldn’t join the podcast this week as he found himself unexpectedly detained by Sussex Police on suspicion of attempting to “float a winery out to sea.” While this peculiar incident has temporarily sidelined Lee, rest assured he’ll be back with us next week to share his unique perspectives.
Seizing this unexpected opportunity, Fergus decided to record from his parked car in an industrial estate. Consequently, the sound quality on his end is less than optimal. We apologise for this inconvenience and kindly ask you to bear with this episode, dear listener. Despite the audio hiccups. Phoebe’s contributions are crystal clear, providing genuinely important and relevant information about the state of the fastest-growing agricultural sector in the United Kingdom.
Phoebe discusses the significant growth the industry has seen recently, the challenges it faces, and the exciting developments on the horizon. From advancements in viticulture to the impact of climate change, this episode covers a broad spectrum of topics that are essential for anyone interested in the UK’s burgeoning wine sector. There are many challenges ahead, but also much to be positive about, making this a truly enlightening episode.
So, tune in and enjoy this informative discussion, and stay tuned for Lee’s return next week.
1,000 downloads in a month. IN A SINGLE MONTH! No, we're not harvesting stats from some Russian bot farm, these are all from you. Our dear Listener. How can we say thank you?We, we thought we'd say thank you by continuing to record our absolute nonsense. This week opens with thoughts about the new snooker season and crying in the streets. However, we quickly get into things as Ferg shares many details about his recent 'study' trip to Alsace. From the impact of climate change to discovering Syrah (yeah, nice one Ferg, it's been around a while) via a discussion about the roles and responsibilities of governing bodies, Ferg lays it all bare. And we do mean all. Thankfully Lee has edited the images out of the podcast and you remain mentally-scar free. Just what are producers in Alsace doing to mitigate, pre-empt, and survive climate change? Are they growing the most suitable varieties? How are wine styles changing? Just what is this Temple Of Ego he describes? As if this wasn't enough, Lee tells us about his impending wine dinner for Flavours of Spain (remember: he's their ambassador) at l'Oculto SE4 on Thursday 11th July. Apparently he's going to talk about the joys of Valencia and will share bottles that bubbles, whites that intrigue, reds that uplift, and sweeties and soothe. Or something like that. There may still be a few tickets remaining to head to @locultose4's website via this link and get yourself booked in. TM&TM: The Wrong Varieties available to loadpoad from wherever you downdown from Thursday morning.
TM&TM Langham are 15
Does the child of two MWs become an MW cubed?
What should you have at Cobham services?
Why are there so many Starbucks at service stations out west?
Why are the boys in the Langham disgorging hall?
What is the ethos at Langham and why is it so special?
All will be explained in this one-off special episode to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Langham, featuring the second-youngest head winemaker in the country, Tommy "Bloody" Grimshaw.
It’s a shame someone has to go last in these mini series. But, we have saved a big hitter and one of our favourites for you.In today’s concluding episode we talk to Marie Davies of Stopham fame. Synonymous with this excellent producer, you may think that Marie has been there from the start. Marie talks us through her journey into wine and the industry, and how she became so innately connected and vital to Stopham (and English wine generally)
Then by exploring the story of Stopham, and their approach to the vineyard and wine, we cover topics such as sustainabilityand wider communication with existing and potential English wine consumers. Again, a lot of ground is covered today, but Marie has agreed (as if there was a choice) to come back on in future and dig into the subjects in greater detail.
Stopham are distributed in the UK by Liberty, and as mentioned in the episode you can find their wines in @majesticwine @hawkinsbros @grape_britannia and @butlerswinecellar amongst others. As well as on @virginatlantic.

For today’s English Wine Week episode we head to Berkshire, to a place that is only 45 minutes from Paddington station. Who would have thought there would be vineyards so close to London? We have a world of vinous riches on our doorsteps in the UK and today we talk to the wonderful Mark Darley, the man behind All Angels Vineyard.
Trading a life in the city and a ‘commute next to someone’s armpit’ for ‘a 3 minute walk with 3 labradors’ seems like a pretty good deal to us, and this is exactly what Mark did when he went into his vines full time. All Angels have won multiple awards for their vintage sparkling wines. It’s no wonder are these are communicative and delicate wines that offer tremendous value. Mark talks about how it all started and shares his thoughts on getting (and keeping) consumers engaged and enthused with the subject of English wine.
From corporate events to dosage trials, there is a lot more happening at All Angels than just grape growing. Well worth the 45 minute journey from Paddington (or more minutes from further afield) and definitely worth 25 minutes of your time today, give this a listen as we continue to celebrate English Wine Week.

As we hurtle towards the end of English Wine Week there is still plenty of time for everyone to get involved. With the weekend around the corner surely it’s time for a glass of something English. But do you stop to consider the world behind the glass? When were these grapes planted? Who is working them and what are the challenges? Just what would drive someone to undertake such a challenge?
Today we talk to the joyful and joyous Phil Harris from Natalia Harris. Phil’s journey began as a natural successor to Indiana Jones, but thankfully he chose to leave archaeology and join the wine industry instead. From experiences at Davenport and Domaine Humbrecht, Phil and his wife Natalia planted a vineyard near Hastings. We talk cultivation, organics and sustainability, and include feedback their wines have received from notable names Jancis Robinson MW and Henry Jeffreys (amongst others).
This is a fun and uplifting 20 minutes in the presence of one of English wine’s great personalities.

What’s cooler than being cool? Being an awesome English wine grower making something unique, exciting, and boundary pushing. Or as Andre 3000 summed it up…’ice cold’.
Charlie quoted Gareth Maxwell when he told me “Bllcks, what can go wrong?”. Charlie takes us on a wonderful journey through the incredible history of this piece of land – a history that involves Henry VIII, the Canadian Royal Air Force, Peter Dominic…and even AC/DC (just about). Anyone else got that in their English wine armoury? We think not.
Coolhurst produce the Triple Vs: all their wines are single variety, single vineyard, and single vintage. A bold move in a marginal climate where there is nowhere to hide. But hiding isn’t necessary, the Coolhurst wines comes highly rated (especially by Lee who knows them reasonably well)
So settle in for a fabulous episode in which Charlie reveals all about Coolhurst and we all cover some thoughts on vintage variation and wine comms.

So far this week we’ve talked to chief executives, makers, marketers, and retailers…we now turn our attentions to competitors. Or rather, competition organisers. For the last 8 years the Independent English Wine Awards (IEWA) has flown the flag for this growing industry, and its many varied and dynamic producers.
Lee himself holds the privilege of having judged, and served as a panel chair, and multiple occasions but this time, we get the down low, the intel, the facts from the founder of this competition. Alex Taylor had his interest in wine competitions piqued by studying WSET. He was furious when first introduced to English wine…that it hadn’t been brought to his attention earlier. Thus started a journey into starting a competition that would help raise the profile of producers and the whole category.
Alex explains his ethos, how the competition works, and mentions just a few of the many extremely talented judges and brilliant medal winners. It’s a classic TM&TM slice of English wine action so strap in and enjoy. We also have a special visit from the Taylor clan.

For several years now, Lee has talked about his heroes, specifically his wine heroes, more specifically his wine superheroes. There is an equivalent to the Bat Signal in this world of English wine, and it takes the form of Sarah Massey and Lyme Bay.
We have been incredibly fortunate to grab a few minutes of Sarah’s time and here we explore her journey into wine and how she has become not only a stellar winemaker, but a serious role model for young women in the industry. There is much more to this conversation and we hope to have Sarah back on soon for a full episode to explore her career, influences, and huge impact on the industry.
This aside we learn about the ethos and direction of Lyme Bay, and how Sarah goes about expressing the multiple sites and high quality fruit grown in some of England’s most premium and exciting sites. It’s a jam packed episode and one we know has much more to cover. We press Sarah for her favourites in the Lyme Bay range and recommend seeking them out to enjoy this English Wine Week.

It’s all very well and good talking about the amazing producers, sites, and fruit England now has in its armoury. It’s also fun talking about marketing and comms (hear yesterday’s episode) but who is on the front lines? Who is going out into the real world of UK wine consumers and fighting the good fight to get as many great wines in front of them as possible?
We have some great retailers of wine in the UK and in today’s episode we spend some time chatting to the wonderful James Hawkins of Hawkins Bros, an English Wine Specialist retailer. It’s here at the coal face that we can discover in real time what consumer think, want, and expect of English wine. Retailers perform a key task in being the link from vineyard and winery to actual drinker and James shares his insights and thoughts on where English wine sits in the mind of the modern consumer.
Among events the Hawkins Bros are running this week you’ll be able to try wines from @albourneestate @extonparkvineyard @greyfriarsvineyard @simpsonswine @candoverbrook @drink.folc @ambrielsparkling (which won’t be the only time they’re mentioned in this series!). James also talks about his discoveries through @the.iewa including @windingwoodvineyard and @poyningsgrangevineyard.
Keep your eye on their social channels for full event details.

Like any decent minded individual we bloody love Dan Kirby. A font of wisdom and knowledge, MW student, and Brand Ambassador for Flint Vineyards. We get straight into it by asking Dan to give us the intel on Flint but the conversation quickly moves into the realm of consumer attitudes, expectations, and how we can better build comms and engagement.
With Dan’s trademark insight and wit we look into where English wine is currently and examine the opportunities for growth. All of this weaves effortlessly around what Flint do, how they do it, and what makes them tick. There’s a lot of great stuff here from both a producer and consumer perspective.
So, settle in and prepare to be both soothed and enlightened by the gentle tones of one of English wine’s great figures.

Who better to talk to at the beginning of English Wine Week than Nicola Bates? The Chief Executive of WineGB very kindly found time in her ridiculously busy schedule to talk to us.
Nicola talks us through the vital work of WineGB and explains the many different complex areas in which this organisation works. We assess the impact on plans of the sudden election campaign and discuss how to move forward during these turbulent times.
Nicola also explains the key areas of focus for WineGB and its members, before we go all JFK and ask not what WineGB can do for us, but what can we do for WineGB. Finally, we ask Nicola to highlight some important events and activity to look for during this English Wine Week. There’s a lot of ground covered for such a short episode and we hope to entice Nicola back for a more indepth chat in future. Until then, enjoy this great primer to English wine and English Wine Week.
Our sincere thanks again to Nicola for finding the time to chat to us.

Amazingly following last week’s debacle, Tom of Paso Primero (and Guardian snack feature) fame has returned to TM&TM Towers! At least this time he was prepared for a recording that had no plan, no understanding of how to conduct a tightly structured interview, and two presenters he described as ‘duelling banjos’.This time we delve deeply into the wines crafted by Tom’s own hands (and jocks). Thanks to the magnificent Online Wine Tasting Company, Ferg and Lee each had 6 of Tom’s wines to taste (drink) and work through under Tom’s expert tutelage. Through the medium of these wines Tom shares more of his winemaking stories, Spanish adventures, and exactly how he went about crafting them. It’s fair to say that our pair of banjos were suitably impressed. Blown away. These wines fully deserve their cult status and following, and not just because Tom himself is a class act. If you would like to try them, you can purchase the same tasting pack through The Online Tasting Club. Do it, you won’t be disappointed. From outdated pop culture references, chasing cockerels, and dubious use of sponsorship money, this episode is another big one, but it’s a huge amount of wine tasting and story telling fun. You’ll love it.TM&TM: Take Your Cos And F O loaddownable from your poddingcasts Thursday morning.
How does a Shrewsbury boy achieve fame through the medium of savoury snacks and The Guardian newspaper while simultaneously being a rock start winemaker in Spain with a cult following? All this will be explored, and much more, in Part I of TM&TM’s interview with Thomas Holt A.K.A. Mr Paso. The winemaking genius behind Paso Primero started life as a potential kickball star before discovering booze. Or he was injured or some other excuse. Before long he was headed to University where his contributions to science have never been questioned…as it seems there aren’t any. Suddenly it was back home to Shropshire and into the loving arms of one of the UK’s best wine merchants (for once, this isn’t actually about Bin Two)…Tanners. It was here that Tom fell in love…in more ways than one.Following sojourns around New Zealand and Canada, it was off to Spain to establish what has quickly become an iconic brand with a fabulous story. With success in Somontano came a journey back to the world of The Kickball as Tom became the winemaker-on-call for Shrewsbury Town.In this episode we tackle winemaking techniques, the beauty of Shropshire (especially that there flower show), and high profile celebrity encounters. Ferg improves upon his [guest name] Doo [guest name] Don’t in a way no one could have foreseen and Lee returns to pitting the two winemakers head to head in a battle of vinous wits. It’s a big one this, and rightfully so. So settle in, kick off your dancing shoes, and be ready for Part I of a Pasodyssey.TM&TM: Not Contributing To The Science out Thursday morning to podcast from wherever you get your downloads
We round out our series on Welsh wines with a look to the future. While there are now many established vineyards in Wales, it is still new territory with new plantings and producers popping up all the time. One such producer is St. Hilary. Planted in 2021, their first harvest took place last year, with the first wines expected imminently.
Liz explains where the dream originated, what they planted, and their hopes for their wines, and those of the Welsh Wine industry too. Liz shares so much information and detail on the St. Hilary story you’d think they’d been established for a decade. This new vineyard has a lot of potential and early barrel sampling of the wine has yielded some very positive feedback from a knowledgeable industry figure. Learn more about them by following them at @sthilaryvineyard.
We have had such fun talking to all our guests over the course of this series, although we’re no closer to an answer on the badger question. Hopefully this series has revealed how adventurous, creative, and dynamic the Welsh wine industry really is. There are many more producers than the handful we’ve interviewed here, and perhaps we’ll be able to entice more to join us at TM&TM Towers soon.
Our sincere thanks to @vinvancymru, @thedellvineyard, @valevinesandwines, @welshwines, @terroir.iste, @whinyardrocks, @montgomeryvineyard, @velfreyvineyard, @ancrehill, and of course @sthilaryvineyard.

Can you believe it’s already the second Friday of Welsh Wine Week? It’s amazing how quickly time passes, especially when you’re having so much fun talking to the key players in the Welsh Wine Scene.
This adventure continues today with Andy Mounsey from Velfrey Vineyard. This ‘Accidental’ Vineyard is something of a Goldilocks place for growing vines. Andy shares the story of how The Mounsey’s initial plans were rather different, but a visit from an MW finally convinced them.
We then learn about the varieties planted, some of their vineyard techniques, and the wonderful wines they produce. This is another great 20 minutes with one of Wales’s best producers. Give it a listen.

As we reach day 7 of Welsh Wine Week we’re fully in our stride of talking to the key players and movers and shakers of this exciting and dynamic industry. Today we head to Powys (virtually) to talk to Woody of Montgomery Vineyard. One of the most well known names in Welsh wine with great distribution Woody tells us what makes him, and Montgomery tick. From the UK’s highest vineyards to his approach to blending we learn about their varieties, location, and exercises in fine tuning. @welshwineweek @welshvineyardassociation @montgomeryvineyard #WelshWineWeek #Welshwine #podcast #wine #winecast @fergelias @wineman147
Following on from yesterday’s chat with a knowledgeable consumer we head back out into the fields and valleys to continue our exploration of Welsh Wine Producers. Today we talk to Susan and James from Whinyard Rocks. Their story is one of epic romance, troublesome sheep, and altitude. Quite the combination.
We learn how they came to plant a vineyard on the Welsh/Herefordshire border and just how diverse their production really is. While one of the smallest producers in Wales in terms of production (perhaps the smallest at the moment?) they have plans to grow and evolve. Their story is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of the whole Welsh Wine industry.
From fabulously named wines, to creative production, Whinyard Rocks are not only an incredible amount of fun, they’re a producer to really keep your eyes (and ears in this instance) on.

TM&TM’s exploration of the Welsh Wine Space continues apace but this time with something slightly different. We love hearing what consumers think about wines (well, sometimes we love it) and we wanted to bring in a wine drinker’s point of view. Someone who doesn’t have the baggage of us wine professionals and get caught up worrying about pH or margin.
Bethan Roberts is one of our nation’s heroes. A GP. When she’s not busy saving lives and curing ills, Bethan enjoys a glass of wine. Particularly Welsh Wine. For some reason Bethan has been
following and interacting with this pod for a while, so we thought it high time she answered for this. Ferg brings up something about badgers.
Bethan talks about her discovery of wine and gives a real consumer’s viewpoint on Welsh Wine.

Who can believe it’s already Monday of Welsh Wine Week? These days are flying by so quickly, and there are so many wines to get through. Today’s episode focused on one of the biggest names in the world of Welsh Wine. From their beginnings as a postman and nurse, Robb and Nicola Merchant have become figureheads of an entire industry. From their first plantings in 2009 to crowdfunding their own winery, White Castle have achieved incredible things.
Hear their story from Robb himself as he talks about those first vines, producing the UK’s first Cabernet Franc, and hopes and visions for the future.

Our Welsh Wine Series continues today with an interview with the amazing Gwen Davies of Vale Vineyard. Up in Denbigh (or down in Denbigh depending upon your own geographical location) Vale Vineyard has a unique set of characteristics that allow grapes to thrive. It’s not an obvious location for grapes, but that’s what makes these wines (and Welsh producers generally) so inspiring.
Gwen talks about how and where it all started, and what they’ve learned along the way (the real friends were…) Vale are another award winning producer, with their Debut Sparkling Rosé picking up a major gong at last year’s Welsh Wine Awards.
We hope you enjoy this chat as much as we enjoyed recording it, and make sure you keep an eye out for these wines (and the surrounding wildlife)

Following yesterday first episode of TMTM:WWW we’re hitting you with our second. Today we feature a wonderful conversation with Lucy Alford from The Dell Vineyard in Raglan. Planting on a family farm without much experience of wine, the Alford’s have gone on to create award winning wines. Their 2022 Rosé picked up a major trophy at last year’s Welsh Wine Awards. Not bad considering the battles fought against local wildlife.
Lucy talks about where she and her husband were first bitten by the wine bug (any chance of seeing some Welsh Carmenere?) and how they decided to actually plant a vineyard. A fairly young producer they’ve achieved great things already.
Listen in to the fabulous Lucy as she recounts the story of The Dell, including some wonderful Welsh mythology.

Welsh Wine Week is finally upon us. As you may know, @fergelias & Lee are fans of Welsh Wine and we wanted to highlight some key figures within this growing and dynamic industry. This is the first of ten episodes, one each day of Welsh Wine Week, and we’re starting with a bang as Lee talks to the wonderful Sara, founder and director of Vin Van Cymru. This is a fabulous wine shop and tasting room in Cardiff.
Sara talks about her introduction to Welsh wine and how she sees its development. Sara also tells us about the events she has lined up over the next few days for Welsh Wine Week.

Our regular programming has been interrupted…and for a very good reason. Tomorrow sees the start of Welsh Wine Week. A 10 day (which is a week in Wales; it is its own country and can have whatever timezone, currency, and other things it chooses!) celebration of all things vinous and Welsh.
Wanting to get in on the action, and desperate for content, TM&TM Senior Management took the executive decision that we would talk to some of the key figures within and around the Welsh wine industry. By we we largely mean Lee, as Ferg is “busy”, or “working” or “wondering about badgers” or something.
Between 24th May and 2nd June we will feature a producer/merchant/consumer a day and in so doing, give you, our dear listener (Hashtag: Ferg’s Mum) an insight into the very exciting world of Welsh Wine.
Look out for the following: @vinvancymru, @thedellvineyard, @valevinesandwines, @welshwines, @terroir.iste, @whinyardrocks, @montgomeryvineyard, @velfreyvineyard, @ancrehill, and @sthilaryvineyard.
Here’s to Welsh Wine and Welsh Wine Week!

If you listened to last week’s episode you will be primed and ready for Part II of the TM&TM interview with the WSTA’s Miles Beale. We promised a more serious episode and we are delivering. Following the fun and frolics of last week, it is time to get down to business. We open with Miles explaining exactly who the WSTA are and what is their role within the drinks industry. There is more to this body than may immediately meet the eye, and the membership encompasses a very broad range of businesses. Lee uses this as an opportunity to push his own #ThinkIndie #DrinkIndie agenda and ask about the engagement and interaction from the indie crowd. It is often asked if bodies like the WSTA are doing enough, but are the indies supporting in return?Given the nature of the work, we ask Miles how he walks the difficult tightrope between satisfying both the needs of members and engaging with government. Following this, we ask if there have been discussions with current shadow ministers and the opposition in the event that there is a change of government.Special mentions to, The Online Wine Tasting Club, North South Wines, and Eynsham Cellars as examples of businesses who have engaged and ‘activated’ their local MPs.Other questions raised by our listener and ourselves include the specifics of repackaging sizes, declining alcohol consumption and the continuing rise of the temperance movement and how to respond in the face of these challenges. Miles also cover briefly the current state of catering and hospitality, MUP, duty rises and increasing taxation; again, we ask how we can navigate these as an industry and do our best to tackle them.Amongst these and other things, Miles also explains the Community Alcohol Partnership initiative. This is a packed in episode that covers a great deal of ground. As covered in the episode, if you are interested in learning more about these issues, the work of The WSTA, or indeed joining them, connect with them through their website, social channels, or info@thewsta.co.uk.Our sincere thanks to Miles and The WSTA for the fabulous work.TM&TM: THE WSTA available to download from wherever you get your podcasts on Thursday morning.
This week on TM&TM we find ourselves in The Thick Of It as we keep ourselves In The Loop with one of the key figures, no, THE key figure in the UK wines and spirits industry. TM&TM Towers is a House Of Cards (the original, not the remake), but we had to say Yes Minister when the chance to speak to the most influential person on the UK scene. We had so many questions for this individual that we only made it to Page Eight. We are beyond privileged to say this is part I of our talk with The WSTA’s chief executive, Miles Beale. He will need no introduction (but we do give him one in the episode) as he has steered the WSTA and our industry through multiple swells and storms during his tenure at the top. From his life as a civil servant, move into politics, and becoming the UK’s most influential drinks figure (did we mention that?) in Part I we enjoy some fun and frolics before a much more serious Part II arrives next week.Ferg delivers his now classic interview style with an updated and much more respectful take: Miles Does Miles Does Not while Lee asks questions about attire, snooker, and the notion of politicians as celebrities. From his loose connections to navy rum and his rumoured part in The Matrix, Miles plays along with our silly games with grace and style, as we would expect. In next week’s episode we talk (genuinely) about the bigger issues facing our industry and the fabulous work of the WSTA. For now, enjoy hearing Miles share his preferred tipples, political background, and how to handle a suit-based interview crisis. Our sincere thanks to Miles for his time to record this and talk about things seemingly unrelated to the very important work of the WSTA. We promise that next week’s episode is definitely worth a listen, especially if you’re in, around, or connected to alcoholic drinks in any way.TM&TM: Firing Large Guns podvailable to loadstream from wherever you downcast your audio experiences on Thursday morning.
You should be careful what you wish for. You asked for it. The Maker & The Merchant is now A 2 PART PODCAST! Once a fortnight wasn’t enough for you, so you’re getting us twice a week now. This here is Part II of Ferg’s Norse Saga. Like the mythical tales of old it involves merriment, danger, and dealing with wine journalists.Ferg talks us through the Norwegian Monopoly and explains a little about how it all works. He also examines Norwegian wine culture from social attitudes and consumption to wine communication. What are the ethics of low ground clearance? Is it right that we’re asking for further sponsors for our show to sit alongside Bin Two?* Just how many Dodgeball references are socially acceptable on a wine podcast?Lee becomes nothing more than a Talking Head (well, he’s never been anything else has he?) as he nods along with Ferg’s every thought and whim. He does however introduce us to a brand new book: Italy In A Wine Glass. Just published and authored by the fabulous Marc Millon, this is a tour de force through Italian history, mythology, and culture, all through the lens of the country’s wines. Published by Hurst, you should be looking this up. Lee also tees up his next Discover Spain wine dinner at l’Oculto on the 9th May, which you should definitely attend! We finally actually have some listener feedback. Through official channels. Thank you to our new correspondents who took the time to email in with their thoughts, questions, and moral questions. Would it take that much for you to write in too? Finally, we catch up with recently featured Karen Jenkins new hobbies.TM&TM: Oysters On A Business Trip available to your ears from your podcast site of choice on Thursday morning.
It may have escaped your attention, but Fergus has recently been on hol…working in Norway. Not only this, but he has been featuring on other podcasts in direct contravention of the strict TM&TM Charter.Yet this is an in house issue with which you do not need to concern yourselves. In this episode, Lee asks Ferg the BIG questions; Does a Peer Gynt? What does elk taste like? Why is English wine so popular in Norway? Ferg explains the intricacies of working with the Scandinavian monopolies and explores the complex and serious wine culture to be found here. From adventures with brown cheese to magnums of Balfour on pour in local bars, it sounds like Ferg has had a great time. All the while Lee has been keeping the lights on at TM&TM Towers. It’s fine, he not at all jealous. In this episode he talk about…well, as usual he doesn’t actually contribute much…although he does issue an apology to @thedellvineyard for an error he made in our Welsh episode. There will be swift and severe punishment for this as we have much higher standards at TM&TM.So sit back, relax, and enjoy Ferg’s Norwegian adventure (with a distinct lack of Nordic Walking Stories).TM&TM: Norwegian’s Would available to lodpod from the loaddowners on Thursday morning.
Last week we were introduced to actor, legend, wine & cheese raconteur Dan Belmont. From his early days on the stage to becoming a leading light in the worlds of the controlled spoilage of milk and grape juice. He could have been Hamlet, Macbeth, Kowalski...instead he wrote the book on New York State Wines. In this episode we shoot straight to the heart of all things Big Apple. Dan shares his immense knowledge of these regions and we talk grapes, styles, and diversity. Lee of course brings philosophy into play while Fergus considers what English wine can learn from a region that has had to work hard to make a name for itself. It's a fascinating insight into a region that while only really now breaking into 'the mainstream', has a lot more history and heritage than we give it credit for. Dan also talks about his business Good Wine Good People, which now has both retail and wholesale arms, and to which you should definitely be paying attention. Our huge thanks to Dan for his time and generosity. We're thinking a series of taste along episode with the man himself...who's in? Come on, let's make it happen. TM&TM: Who's Your Favourite Ghostbuster, loaddownable from your castingsite pods Thursday morning.
What do The Meisner Technique, controlled ageing of milk, and New York Wines have in common? We know, it's a bit too easy this one. The answer is of course: Dan Belmont. Dan literally wrote the book on New York wines. Literally in the traditional (and best) definition of the word. From a background in the theatre to becoming a leading expert in the worlds of both cheese and wine, Dan joins us for a two part episode where we explore his incredible journey so far. We explore his approach to acting and learn why he didn't make it in the ballet. From here Dan takes us on an adventure to Finger Lakes and dipping his toes into the world of New York wines. Amongst these fingers and toes are many stories of revelation, revolution, and mold. Ferg compares Finger Lakes (and other New York appellations) establishing themselves both locally and internationally with England, while Lee attempts to get to the beating heart of Dan's acting method and love for cheese. This is the first of a two part episode featuring Dan. Next week we will talk about how he went on to establish Good Wine Good People and learn a great deal more about New York State wine. This is a great episode, primarily as Ferg and Lee don't interrupt our wonderful guest too much. Enjoy this first slice of Prime Dan; this man's knowledge and passion seem to know no bounds. TM&TM: Geotrichum Candidum available to castpod from wherever you laddown Thursday morning.
Last week on TM&TM we promised you a bonus episode. This is more like a threat, but either way, we have delivered. You get what you deserve. Early in March (so it's a timely one) Lee bothered The Welsh Wine Showcase in London. This event celebrated the great and the good of Welsh wine and showcased the diversity, dynamism, and creativity to be found in this mighty country. From the first plantings in the 1870s to more than 70 hectares today, Wales has made incredible strides over the last few years. Strides that TM&TM are incapable of replicating; largely due to poor physical fitness, age, and utter laziness. We know what we're about. Over the course of this bonus episode, Lee guides Ferg (and you our dear listener: Hashtag: Ferg's Mum) through the producers who were there on the day. We start with Ancre Hill and travel through Wales taking in Hebron Vineyard, Montgomery, The Dell Vineyard, The Vale Vineyard, Velfrey, Whinyard Rocks, and White Castle. Lee shares his thoughts on the producers and their standout wines and chooses his favourite sparkling, white, and red from the event. We then return to England briefly to talk about Ferg's latest project at Balfour: the brand New Albariño.
You didn't ask, and we didn't listen, but here it is.
TM&TM: What Does Supreme Belief Taste Like? available to castpod from wherever you loaddown on Thursday morning.
You will well know that at TM&TM we tackle the pressing intellectual questions of the day. There’s next to no prevarication in our latest episode as Fergus & Lee ask just what was Humpty Dumpty? Is the Forbidden Fruit actually a PIWI? And what connects the Tuscan Maremma with Sussex?
But it’s not all fun and games. Firstly we wish FotP Janina our best wishes as she has lost her voice (she had when we recorded this mess 3 weeks ago). Then we deal with a most serious complaint that has arrived via unofficial channels. Karen Jenkins was furious when she accosted Lee and gave him a piece of her mind. He deserved it. We hope to use the AAA technique as we Acknowledge, Apologise, and Assure Karen that we will right the severe injustice she has discovered.
If you were expecting one of our host to ‘Go Full Partridge’, you’d probably think it would be Lee. Well, you’d be wrong. Ferg out-Partridges Partridge as he introduces a new segment: Ferg’s Nordic Stories’ This leads to another issue as Ferg takes umbrage with Lee’s response to Brad Horne’s March Madness questions.
We see the return of our incredibly popular* ‘This Week I Have Been Mostly Drinking’ feature. Ferg explores Sangiovese clones with Cecchi and Lee drinks his way through a French Viognier from the fandabiedozie Wine Society.
Prepare to be wowed as we introduce our new sponsor Diam Corks as Ferg regales us all with some #OTRChat. We can’t wait to see those advertising dollars roll in. We also share a very special discount code for our other sponsor Bin Two*
Lee talks us through his new role as Ambassador for Flavours of Spain & l’Oculto Restaurant and covers what exactly is his current employment status?
Remember to email us@themakerandthemerchant@gmail.com.
What a mess. TM&TM: Ferg’s Nordic Stories available to lodpoad from wherever you cowndast this Thursday. We’re sorry.
*it’s not popular at all

Despite what you may think about TM&TM (an you're probably right), we somehow keep getting interview with increidbly high profile, smart, and talented guests. This time around we are delighted to talk to the enormously talented, trend-setting, winemaking wonder that is Zoë Driver. Given her stature and credibility within wine, you may expect us to take things a little more seriously. If that's what you really expect, you've clearly stumbled upon this pod by accident.
Fergus inflicts his game of [guest name] Doo [guest name] Don't upon poor Zoë but in so doing manages to get under the skin of her appraoch to winemaking and thoughts on sparkling wine production. Prepare for some #clonechat. Zoë talks to us about the current range at TM&TM favourite Black Chalk and also clues us in to some exciting new releases and in so doing, gives us an insight into the incredible creativity that is to be found in English wine.
Lee continues his quest to prove that everyone else is just better at what they do than Ferg. Zoë proves to be a much kinder judge in these areas than Lee and there is disparity in scoring. We would like to assure listeners that a full, independent review is under way.
Of course, Ferg also sets out to establish just how good a Driver Zoë is with his ill thought out 'Nominative Determinism' experiment. TM&TM would like to wholeheartedly apologise to Zoë for this experience.
It's a good one, carried entirely by the magnificent Zoë and oyu should give it a listen when it pops into your podfeeds on Thursday morning.
Our enormous thanks to the one, the only, the phenomenally brilliant Zoë Driver.
TM&TM Have long stood in admiration at the many great people who make English wine happen. It doesn't just appear magically y'know; there are people working literally hours to bring you the best bottles possible. We are absolutely thrilled to say that we have one of them on this episode. In our efforts to bring you the best that English Wine has to offer, Fergus & Lee are thrilled to introduce Luke Spalding. Viticulturalist, Grape Lover, & Knower Of How To Stop Badgers, Luke brings his wit and wisdom to bear on a show that desperately needs it. From dairy related bombshells to discussing whether English Wine has yet found its identity (does existence preceed essence?), Luke shares his thoughts on regenerative and organic viticulture and exactly what grape varieties we should think about growing in our fair climbs. Ferg continues his interview strategy of asking black or white questions on themes that really are more shades of grey, while Lee once again pits the two of them against each other in an effort to discover who is England's best professional. Through the key subjects of life, people, wines, and legislation, we get inside Luke's head and have likely left him requiring therapy. There is absolutely nothing controversial in this episode, mainly because Lee has learned how to use an audio editing programme. Thanks to the measured, reasoned, thoughtful, and balanced Luke for joining us, and standing up to our insistence that there are only binary answers to all questions. TM&TM: Strobe Lights & Aspirin, available to loadcast from your serverpods on Thursday morning.
For the second episode in a row we have as a guest a proper, genuine, home grown, corn fed, English wine heavyweight. Following on from a deeply insightful interview with Ingrid Bates last time out, this time we tackle the winemaking behemoth that is Tommy Grimshaw. Yes, that's right, Tommy G of Langham fame brings the Devonshire Class which TM&TM so desperately needs. Ferg has been honing his interview skills, and in an effort to become the new Jeremy Paxman, interrogates Tommy not through waterboarding or by shining lights in his eyes; no, Tommy is forced to endure a game of Tommy Doo Tommy Don't. This is highbrow stuff indeed. Throughout we tackle wine rating apps, the joys of Buckfast, and ponder whether wine can be made on a boat. And talking of boats, Lee has devised his own devilish interview strategy. This is the start of Lee's quest to discover if Ferg is actually any good. In a series of brutal winemaking questions, Lee pits the knowledge and skills of Ferg and Tommy against each other in an audio equivalent of Gladitorial combat. Who comes out on top? You'd better listen to find out. Ferg & Lee then waffle about something or other for far too long. Strap in folks, TM&TM are going to the next level. With HUGE thanks to the wonderful Tommy for his time and generosity in sharing his incredible knowledge and insights. TM&TM: Tommy Doo Tommy Don't, available to loadcast from your poddown sites on Thursday morning.
After months of incessant demands, outrageous riders, and Lee's ineptitude, we finally give our listening public (hashtag: Ferg's Mum) what they want. Yes, Ferg and Lee are joined by super-cool, Bristol-grower extraordinaire Ingrid Bates. After a discussion about scones we learn mroe about Ingrid's journey from Nearly The Next Sir David Attenborough to founding Dunleavy Vineyards. Along the way we cover off the genius of Tommy Grimshaw, Shed Seven's new album, and celebrity hotel riders. Ingird talks us through establishing vineyards around Bristol, and discusses the creative scene that permeates the city. From her great labels with local musicians by Pete Axford, to establishing a visitor's centre, we learn about her use of less well known and potentially groundbreaking grape varieties, and working with local shops and restaurants to build a knowledge and understanding of her work. Lee reveals how he has essentially become Chief Winemaker for his beloved All Angels, shares a whisky for Burns Night (when we actually recorded this mess), and doesn't seem at all bitter about life. Ferg gives the down low on what is going on in the life of England's third best paid winemaker. It's a bumper episode, but we think you'll agree, totally worth it. A huge thanks to Ingrid for being so generous with her time, and putting up with our absolute nonsense. TM&TM: Ice Cold In Bristol, available to castload from wherever you downpod this Thursday morning. this is FAR from the truth obviously
We're not completely stupid at TM&TM. We've analysed the viewing figures, done indepth consumer research, and looked at salaries. We know what isn't working and how to fix it. We've retained fan favourite Fergus Elias and binned (for this episode) Lee Isaacs, who has cost this show dearly. A mid season cast change NEVER goes wrong, and in this episode we beta test our new concept...THE MAKER AND THE MOBBS. We are delighted that stepping into Lee's clown shoes is Great British Wine founder, Masterchef, and Encyclopaedia of all things English Wine, the mighty John Mobbs. The man whom we consider to be the greatest resource on English wine today. Ferg learns where the English wine bug first grabbed John, and how he set about creating his fabulous website. Following this is a State of the Nation address which considers the opportunities available, the future of Charmat, pints, names, and Seyval Blanc. While sipping on a firm favourite of ours, the Dalwood still white blend, John highlights the standout English wines in various categories and pinpoints lesser known varieties we should get to know. All while effortlessly taking up the grand position of new cohost. In the vein of American TV drama though, we expect the next episode will open with Lee stepping out of the shower and revealing it was all just a dream. The Maker And The Mobbs: available to lodpoad from wherever you downcast this Thursday.
Do you want to get your new year off with a bang?Do you value the thoughtful and reasoned input of two seasoned, rational, articulate wine professionals?Do you want up to date pop culture references? Then look elsewhere. The Maker And The Merchant are back! In imperious form too. Having not yet quite recovered from Christmas debauchery, Fergus & Lee tackle the big issues of the day head on. What were their best presents? What are their hopes and dreams for 2024. And just what do consumers have against mushroom shaped corks? Amongst those hopes for 2024 is that Lee's Not Yet Comedy night in support of The Not Yet Named Wine Company goes well; head to NYNWC's website to grab yourself one of the few remaining tickets. Ferg talks up three exciting new releases from Balfour, while we also explore a brand new potential fault in wine that neither of us have heard of. This involves some serious, big league named dropping by Fergus. We touch on the very serious issues facing catering and hospitality and urge you to get out to support your local bars and restaurants as well as the usual mixture of chat, horrendous jokes, and wondering how Ferg can top this year's Christmas present he gave to our dear listener. Wishing you all a wonderful 2024...let's be honest, if it's starting here, it can only get better.
Quelle surpise! Ferg and Lee have actually managed to fulfill their contractual duties by recording an episode. We know, who would have thought the most basic requirment of hosting a podcast is to record a podcast? You'll be equally surprised to know this is a topsy turvy episode. We start with Lee sharing some genuine and heartfelt thanks to a great many people before we talk up our recent competition winner, the amazing Alice. Huge thanks To Csaba at Daddy Wine Club for not just creating us a range of merch, but for sponsoring this competition. We can't wait to see Alice in her full TM&TM regalia and wonder if she'll be incorporating it into her act? 🙂 We then tackle, or rather gentle prod, the perennial 'indies vs supermarkets' title fight event. Who is better? Is there a reason for choosing one over the other? Just how far would Ferg be prepared to travel to visit an indie? This moves effortlessly, well, with some tremendous effort actually, to a discussion about what we'll be drinking for Christmas. This episode is perhaps our most political, and be prepared for some industrial language as things get heated at TM&TM Towers. There's a surprise feature with Nicole Scherzinger too. Don't worry, we can't see it becoming a regular event. Finally, Lee talks up his event working with Alex and The Not Yet Named Wine Co. Have you ever seen wine standup? Do you want to? We can guarantee it will be 'an experience' Check out Not Yet Named Wine Co's events page for further details and tickets. With our sincere thanks and gratitude to all our listener for their constant support of the pod, and wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and happy new year. Thanks for sticking with us.
The moment nobody was hoping for, and perhaps feared most of all...this winter, only on a hosting site near you comes a podcast so irrelevant that almost nobody has noticed its existence. Fergus and Lee are finally reunited and continue their efforts to provide a stream of wine related nonsense. It's been some time since our valiant cohosts recorded together, mainly as Ferg was so exhausted after their last episode he had to take a break. He did so through the medium of winemaking. Lee just faffed about and contributed nothing. Yes, he's lazy like the yeast. In a triumphant return to TM&TM HQ, Fergus talks us through the facts, stats, and numbers of his 2023 vintage and we attempt to explore how this year looks, and how it may compare to other vintages. Do you like numbers? Do you like nonsense? Then you're going to love this. We also send a hearty thanks to Mr Mike Boyne for stepping up to the plate on our last episode in a substantial way, as well as issuing a formal apology to our dear listener. Lee pays a small tribute to Oddbins and we look ahead to the coming weeks. Thanks for sticking with us despite the radio silence and our babblings. TM&TM: Das Ist Nummerwang, available to lodpod from wherever you cod your pasts this Thursday. May whatever you deity you believe in have mercy on us all.
"The worst deception is self deception. Plato" Mike Boyne.Dear listener, be under no illusion that we at TM&TM Towers do not deceive ourselves. We know that nobody is asking for more episodes or content. But we play by our own rules, not yours, and we just keep on going. Well, some of us do. On the latest episode of TM&TM, the pod's favourite host, as voted for by the TM&TM hosts, Bergus Elias, did not turn up to the recording. Apparently he's "busy with harvest.". No, we don't know either. For a deep dive into the life of one of the UK's best winemakers, head over to Balfour's social media channels for a daily update. They really are great videos and give you an insight into the life of a VERY BUSY winemaker. Valiantly stepping into the plate and up to the fold then, we are delighted to introduce FotP, Mr Mike Boyne of Bin Two fame. He's also very busy as he too has a vineyard and makes wine. Not quite as much as Ferg but who said that size mattered? Initially the plan was to discuss small versus big winemaking and just how nice people in English wine really are. However, the episode took a turn very quickly as Mike and Lee end up talking about mental health generally, and frame it in the context of the wider drinks industry. Mental health has rightly become a more important and less stigmatised subject, yet still needs more discussion. What are your experiences of the treatment and discussion around mental health in the drinks industry? We would love to hear your thoughts. Serious stuff aside, we quickly delve into the Mike's itch (we advised seeing a specialist), Lee's morning routine, and a reference that probably only Paul Mabray stands a chance of catching. With huge thanks to Mike Boyne for being an exceptional cohost, and indeed, wonderful human being. Head to Bin Two's website to grab some great wines, and some of that awesome merch that we mention. For anyone struggling with mental health challenges, speak up. We're here to listen and you can always contact the NHS, The Samaritans, or MIND. Sending our best TM&TM vibes to anyone finding it hard. The Maker And The Merchant: NosBergAtu, available to loadcast wherever you downpod on Thursday morning.
After a week’s delay that we’re sure no one noticed, the pod that just won’t go away returns with more deep insights, rational thought, and nuanced discussion. No, wait, it’s very much the opposite of that. Many would argue that the first 20 minutes of this episode are hard going.
What is the difference between a scarf and a cravat? What exactly defines Disney as opposed to Pixar? And just how rational is it to put Holly Valance around your bed?
In a desperate attempt to stay niche and avoid the mainstream, Ferg and Lee start to alienate as many potential sponsors as possible. You can rest assured we won’t become corporate shills for the world of Big Sugar.
Lee quizzes Ferg as to whether this English vintage will be Apocalypse Now and we take an in depth look at just what winemakers wear on their feet. We know what the audience wants: #BootsChat (that’s boots as in footwear not the high street pharmacy)
The wonderful Tim Carlisle did raise some issues and concerns with TM&TM Customer Service following our last episode and we tackle these points. We also take the opportunity to wish friend of the pod Leila KIlloran a speedy recovery…which also contractually obliges her to be a guest in the future.
Finally Ferg talks about his recent experiences at the WineGB tasting, which Lee couldn’t attend as he seems to be trapped in Scotland for most of this month.
The Maker And The Merchant: Valance…available to loadcast wherever you downpod this Thursday.
In a first for The Maker And The Merchant, the name of the episode appears in the audiogram. What more could a pod hope to achieve? We start with Lee dropping a bomb about one of the UK’s favourite beers; he attempts to recover the situation by talking up St. Austell’s delicious Mena Dhu stout. Whilst in the Cornwallshire he visits FotP (Friend of the Pod innit) Bin Two. Was he welcomed or politely asked to leave or arrested on site? Listen in to find out.
We reveal the time-travelling nature of TM&TM HQ and our company vehicles. Meanwhile, Fergus talks about his great escape to Germany and discusses the complexities of winemaking adjustments and bottling…whilst being in 2 separate countries…in a single day. We wonder who else can live at this speed? (the speed specifically being 88mph)
In a first for TM&TM we tough on the world of Low and No. Is this a category for you?
Back to the alcohol-containing liquid, Lee finally gets a taste of Tim Carlisle endorsed, North South imported, Champagne Mandois. Thanks to R And R PR Lee also gets to talk us through 2 wines from Chile’s Errazuriz; the Reserva Chardonnay and Carménère each get a thorough tasting note and review.
We also ask just how good 2023 is looking for English wine. Is it great or is it all a bit of PR spin?
We then ask the biggest question in English wine: Who are The Fab Four whom we could put together and send to America to break their market? We’re throwing this over to you dear listener, send us your suggestions for English wine’s Fab Four*
Amongst our suggestions, you’ll find Dermot Sugrue, Gareth Maxwell, Zoë Driver, Emma Rice, and Julia Trustram Eve. Who are we missing?
We also think about the best way to celebrate our first anniversary. Do you have any suggestions?
*We can’t and won’t actually fund an American tour for the chosen four.
So strap in and enjoy a time-travelling episode of the pod that just won’t go away. the Maker And The Merchant: Obeisance 52 – available to loadcast wherever you downpod on Thursday morning.
We have a TM&TM Super Magnificent Incredible Special for you. Due to our powerful connections (by which we means Ferg's phone book) we have managed to convince wine writer extraordinaire Henry Jeffreys to join us. From his days in the wine trade drinking top notch Rioja with Oddbins to becoming a fully fleded wine writer via the medium of publishing, we uncover a little of Herny's back story. We then dive deep into his wonderful new book Vines In A Cold Climate (available from all good digital and analogue book retailers). From its inception, concept changes, to final tome, Henry shares with us his English wine journey. Covering American founders, Sussex's Caesar, and Norfolk priests, this book has it all (even Tibetan bowls). We also try to uncover who is the English winemaker most likely to win a fight. During our recording, Fergus's headphones and mic were so overwhelmed by Henry's presence that they stopped working. Hence Ferg's silence for a chunk of the interview. This also explains why Herny starts talking about cars seemingly apropos of nothing. A fabulous book based around the personalities involved in pioneering English wine, this is an absolute must for your home library. With huge thanks to Henry for giving up his valuable time to talk to a pair of numpties. Give this one a listen; it's a real cracker.
THE MAKER & THE MERCHANT: TRIBUTE
Hugely aware that TM&TM isn’t the greatest and best podcast in the world, Ferg and Lee start by discussing what happened when Descartes and Sartre walked into a bar, margins on mugs, and non-linear jazz wine tastings. Talking of tastings, Lee highlights the upcoming Grapest Hits event coming up soon involving North South Wines, Condor Wines, and Hayward Brothers. (Apologies to Hayward Bros that Lee forgot you were involved…he is being investigated by TM&TM HR as we speak)
Lee FINALLY covers off the fabulous Flavours of Spain tasting he attended about a million years ago featuring, amongst others, Xulia Bande, Lar de Maia, Bodega Ojuel, and Garage Wines. Lee sends a huge thanks to Ana and all the producers who took the time to talk to him. Usually he is kicked out immediately. For good reason.
We ask if consumers and the trade are aligned in their expectations and assumptions and just who is the English Wine Trade’s Captain Cristopher Pike?
Fergus reviews the English vintage so far and we go on to compare the pricing of ESW and Champagne. He asks for our listener’s ideas for a new vintage t-shirt (send us your ideas by email of through the socials) and we get surprisingly political while Ferg drops some revealing and deeply personal truth bombs.
Lee recommends 3 great value English Sparkling Wines that you should be tasting…and they’re not all from Balfour. Although one of them is.
We also review some new stats from WineGB and tease a VERY special guest who is due to appear on our next episode. HINT: He’s just published a phenomenal new book about Vines In A Cold Climate.
In this episode Ferg discovers that Lee isn’t actually there. But was he ever? Stepping into the huge shoes left by Lee we have the infinitely talented and knowledgeable Janina Doyle. Already a podcaster in her own right on the excellent East,Sleep, Wine, Repeat.
Janina talks us through her start in wine, those Damascene Moments, her celebrity crush, and explains why she's always Russian...especially when it comes to getting stuck into old vines.
Fergus Elias and Janina disagree however upon her Revelation, but reconcile over a shared love of the metaphysical question: just where IS Vinexpo? Ferg and Janina also ask what time is it in Spain?
In this marmalade-packed episode, Janina drinks Spanish, Ferg gets his Riedel out, and there's a deep discussion about wines appropriate for a wedding. In the news Janina and Ferg cover wine regions beginning with 'Ch' while Janina shines a light on the whites of Beaujolais.
We’re delighted to report Mr Isaacs will be back in your ears very soon, as TM&TM without one of the TM’s is like a pencil without a lead…pointless.
TM&TM: Tortuga Naranja available Thurpod AM from whencever you daycast your load downs.
Here at TM&TM Towers we're not frightened to try something new...unless it involves ignorance, heights, or hazlenuts as we're terrified of all 3. For the first time Fergus and Lee left the confines of The Towers and were allowed to venture into the wild. To The People's Republic Of Islington they were welcomed, and with huge thanks to The Sampler, allowed to record in situ. In front of a live studio audience, Ferg & Lee chat to World's Most Handsome Man and Face Of Hattingley Valley, Ben Ludford. Ben discusses his love of data, being a chess prodigy, and does some fabulous impressions. At some point Lee wanders off (you're welcome dear listener) and is replaced by World Winemaker Alex Brogan who touches on his Not Yet Named Wine Company project (and is due to appear on a future episode). As if this wasn't enough, there are further impressions of geese, discussions on why our ELO ratings are so low, and we ask where exactly is Tom Bombadil? Before Lee wanders off he gives thanks to Tim Carlisle, North South Wines, and Cosme Palacios for inviting him to the Gran Caballeros dinner, and to Tim Milford for organising the fandabiedozie YOBA lunch. There is so much more, including The Oastbrook Incident, Yeast Chat, and how to be an Australia. TM&TM: Handsome Ben - available to downcast wherever you podload your audio experiences.
As the show that nobody asked to return returns for yet another episode, Ferg and Lee cover some vital ground: just how many Bruce Springsteen puns are appropriate? How is Ferg's car insurance debacle playing out? What makes a good Alien film? We explore the tricky world of Rondo briefly and think we've discovered those who have figured out the true nature of this divisive variety. Shouts outs go to Ingrid and Dunleavy and Mark at All Angels. Think you have to be posh to be a winemaker? Ferg discusses his newest celebrity friends Joanna Lumley, Victoria Moore, and Oz Clarke while Lee gets all too existential and concerned with the true nature of time...and how he can clear your winery of brett with only his guitar. Eventually we get to some wine. Lee tastes Finca Bacara's 'Time Waits For No One' Monastrell Biologico while Ferg cracks open a can of Howl & Grappa's Elektron via Bin Two's Wonky Post Vineyard. On top of all this, learn our new brand hashtags: #FergsMum #JacksMum #BenLudford and #NotBensMum. TM&TM S2E5: Between Two Piers. Available to castload in your downpods from Thursday morning. When will it end?!
We're celebrating at TM&TM Towers. Our valiant leader, who is both the brains and the looks of the pod, returns triumphantly from a trip to Portugal. Hear all about Ferg's adventures involving copious amounts of Port and seafood. Lee, who has been manning the fort, is overjoyed.
In this week's thrilling episode we go in depth on the new exciting releases from Balfour and learn a little more about Ferg's approach to making top notch, boundary pushing English still wine. We also discuss the runners and riders at the recent Wine Garden of England event which took place at Balfour. How many of these producers do you know?
We highlight great achievements by friend of the pod Jessica Summer and hopefully a friend of the pod Sam Povey, who have both been named in Harper's '30 Under 30'. Congratulations also to FOTP Libby Brodie for her placing in The Drinks List Top 100 Most Influential People In Drinks.
Ferg and Lee discuss the recent MW exams and send their hearty congratulations to all those who have endured, battled, and worked their way through one of the world's most challenging qualifications.
Lee talks about his time judging at this year's IEWA and we cover off the big winners including Busi Jacobsohn, Oastbrook, and Biddenden.
As if that wasn't enough for you, there's the usual nonsense including chesschat, cattalk, and a theatre recommendation.
TM&TM: More Than A Podcast, available to castdown wherever you loadpod from Thursday morning.
The Maker And The Merchant: Ecclesiastical Court Things have gone haywire; Fergus has gone AWOL, which leaves Lee in charge. Despite the potential for catastrophe, we have been saved at the 11th hour by the fabulous Jack Merrylees. Marketing & PR Director at Balfour, Jack has extensive experience running marketing and PR in the industry, having been the head of such things at Majestic. Jack talks about his journey into wine, and recounts stories of just what it takes to run successful marketing and comms for a national wine retailer. He touches on the role of critics in today's industry, and the differences he has found moving to a successful English wine producer. He does a superb impression of Olly Smith while also informing us what connects Winston Churchill, Marie Antoinette, and Napoleon. Did Jack's mum double out listener figures? Has she whatsapped him upon listening to the episode? And just what should Ferg's punishment be for such dereliction of duties?
TM&TM returns with a...some kind of noise. Not a really loud one, just one that's disturbing enough you had to reread the opening line of the Decanter feature you were starting. In this episode Ferg & Lee face some big questions such as: Does Ferg's mum control an army of AI Bots? Just how fast is your bottling line? and should Lee return to making those terrible guitar videos? If he does, what song should he play for Fergus's BRAND NEW Bacchus?
Looking at the Wine News we examine the case of a woman alone in the outback who survived on a bottle of wine. We also raise the plight of Fourty Hall who desperately need your help with funding. When it comes to funding, we also talk about the crowdfunder to build a winery being run by the wonderful White Castle in Wales.
In This Week We Have Mostly Been Drinking: Ferg opens up about his skiing holidays and also uncorks a bottle of Savoie. Lee on the other hand, minimising his drinking, pops open a delicious Gruner Veltliner from The Canned Wine Company.
We also hit up some consumer stats, discuss whether oysters ever really live, and just what is Lee's phobia of Coravin?
THE MAKER AND THE MERCHANT RETURN!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the podcasts, TM&TM are back to spoil things, like a shark's fin in the ocean.
Ferg & Lee spend their time promoting other podcasts such as Wine Blast, Wine Flight, Eat Sleep Wine Repeat and Kermode And Mayo's take before covering off just what is being planted in Ferg's garden. While Fergus enjoys some Slovenian dessert wine and Lee talks us through a brace of Argentine Malbecs yawn* we tackle big subjects such as Is Précoce really Pinot? The benefits of going clonal, and just how many Fast And Furious films are there?
In a new feature, Ferg and Lee tackle the big news stories of the day including Bordeaux En Primeur and The Kent Wine Vaults Saga.
It's great to be back...for us at least.
*may not be HIS garden.
A TM&TM Christmas: Fromage a Trois
Continuing our theme of bringing great names down to our level, and reducing their street cred to zero, we are joined by uber-special guest Libby Brodie.
We share 3 very special bottles of wine, which includes Ferg finally working out why he blind-tasted Ken Forrester's FMC when that wasn't what Bin Two sent him. Libby works her way through Karim Mussi's Alandes Paradoux Blanc and Lee doesn't even open his bottle.
We explore some key Christmas drinks statistics as well as answering the important questions such as: is The Great Escape a Christmas film (it absolutely is)? Just how many times a day can you get Wham!med? What exactly does Lee have against Sainsbury's?
Things get a little existential but ultimately we realise that the real wines were the ones we drank along the way.
TM&TM will now take a short break but promise (threaten?) to be back before too long with the little-anticipated season 2.
Who's tasted sparkling English rosé going back nearly 20 years? Ferg has; listen as he talks through the retrospective of Balfour Brut Rosé going back to 2004.
Are Ferg and Lee any good at blind tasting? Obviously, no. But are they any good at working answers out based on evidence on knowledge? Also no.
Listen as Ferg fails to open a wine sent by Mike at Bin Two, instead opting to open something completely different. Lee at least opens the correct wine but forgets the existence of Bandol, can't identify his favourite grape variety, and complains at his mistreatment. This mistreatment involves being sent a bottle as a gift by the aforementioned Mike at Bin Two. Ungrateful.
With huge thanks to Mike for gifting Ferg and Lee bottles to try blind...we'll get the correct wine open in a future episode. For anyone looking to replicate this tasting you can get at least one of these wines from www.bintwo.com
What a pair of clowns.
Episode 7:... available to download Thursday morning from wherever you get your pastcods.
We are absolutely thrilled to bring you a special wine and cheese episode, featuring the magnificent Jessica Summer A.K.A Mouse And Grape.
Mouse and Grape is a luxury online cheese and wine business that specialises in paired hampers, a cheese and wine subscription service, and corporate and private tasting events.
Using all her knowledge, tasting experience and qualifications, Jessica carefully curates her pairings using artisanal cheese and wine from independent producers, and shows her customers how to combine and enhance these heavenly flavours for ultimate indulgence and maximum enjoyment. Today Mouse & Grape ships wine and cheese hampers across the UK and Jessica hosts corporate tasting events for companies in London and the surrounding areas as well as private events like birthdays and hen parties. Whether you are a novice, or consider yourself a connoisseur, Mouse & Grape will open up a world of delicious variety of cheese and wine, and mouth-watering combinations. Jessica also writes about cheese and wine for an online blog, was a judge at the British Cheese Awards 2022, competed as one of six finalists for the Young Cheesemonger of the Year Awards at the World Cheese Awards 2022 and will be a wine trade judge at the People’s Choice Awards this year
Ferg and Lee split a hamper between them and are guided by Jessica into the incredible world of wine and cheese pairing.
Whether you're a vinophile, a turophile, or a healthy combination of the 2, there's something here for you.
Ferg and Lee are off for their gout medication.
By now you all should know about The Online Wine Tasting Club, but how much do you know about the presenters and their stories? In this episode, we ask Alex Taylor and Jamie Smith the big questions: What is Alex's favourite cereal? Just how long is Jamie's list of accomplishments? What does a brand new packaging machine look like? Listen in to learn the answers to these questions, and more, on Episode 5: Beep Beep.
Who puts the sexy into sexy? What links the wines of Australia to England's smallest vineyard and winery? Does Bum Bum yeast really exist?
We have a our first guest to answer all these questions, and more; Mike 'Bin Two' Boyne has sacrificed his not inconsiderable street cred by spending an hour talking to TM&TM. From running one of the UK's best independent wine merchants to producing ridiculously named pet nat and skin contact Solaris via the medium of extreme winemaking calendars, Mike has done it all.
Ferg and Lee taste Mike's skin contact Solaris, Elektron, and the concrete egg Solaris, Supernova.
Huge thanks to Mike for taking the time to ruin his reputation by being associated with us.
Is big better? Why are people from the wine industry inviting Lee to stuff? How many tonnes of fruit is too many in a day? why has fergs hair moved from his head to his face and what has a plough got to do with anything? All this and more in episode 3 (please someone make this podcast end).
What do winemakers eat during harvest? How good is good ordinary claret? Why has this podcast been allowed to reach episode two? Will there actually be any serious dialogue at any stage? Answers to all this and more may or may not be in episode two of The Maker & The Merchant. Only one way to find out.
Well, we’ve listened to the advice...and ignored it. We’ve heard your warnings, but we’re both brave and foolhardy...
The inaugural episode of the podcast that literally no-one asked for is here!
In episode 1 the boys discuss themselves (naturally), wine, and living in the wine world.
They also review a Pinot Noir from an underdiscussed region and (surprise surprise) a Malbec from Argentina.
A little trailer for the least anticipated podcast this week.
The Maker & The Merchant out very soon, wherever you listen to your podcasts
