Millions of people in the United States are affected by mental illness every year. Unfortunately, the mental health care system remains chaotic, underfunded and often inaccessible, and many people are asking themselves the same questions: What if my insurance company won’t cover my treatment? Will I have to be on medication my whole life? Will I ever feel better?

People experiencing mental illness and their families and friends are often unsure how to navigate this system, deal with financial and logistical issues and handle the emotional challenges of mental illness.

“You Are Not Alone,” NAMI’s first ever book, is here to offer help. Written by Dr. Ken Duckworth with the expertise of a leading psychiatrist and the empathy of a family member affected by mental illness, this comprehensive guide includes stories from over 130 people who have been there — including people with mental illness and caregivers — and understand how challenging it can be to find the help you need, when you need it. Their stories are what makes this book different from your typical mental health guide.

In this episode, we explore how family therapy can adolescents recover better and faster from an eating disorder with Alicia Ayvas

Alicia's Biography & Credentials

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) who maintains a practice in Gainesville and Reston, Virginia. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Social Work at Rutgers Univeristy in 2008 with a concentration in psychology and women studies. In 2009, I earned my Masters of Science at Columbia University as an advance clinical student with a specialty in health, mental health, and disabilities. I have been published in Columbia University's Scholarly Journals and continue to write for publication. During my post graduate work from Columbia, I worked at The Center for the Treatment of Eating Disorders, ran the New Jersey Eating Disorder Association's Helpline for the state of New Jersey, and was a frequent lecturer in the Tri-State Area on at risk topics such as: eating disorders, depression, anxiety, self esteem, body image, and trauma.

After completing my Masters of Science in Social Work at Columbia University, I went on to work for The Center for the Treatment of Eating Disorders as a psychotherapist specialized in eating disorders. In 2010, I took a position at Cornerstone Day School, a theraputic High School and Middle School as the Eating Disorder Program Coordinator and ran the only eating disorder program within a school system. The program was very successful and made great strides in eating disorder treatment for the adolescent population.

In 2012, I moved to Virginia and worked as an individual, family, and group therapist. I am trained in DBT, a powerful intervention for the treatment of eating disorders, personality disorders, trauma, anxiety, and depression. My approach is primarily cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic, with an emphasis on DBT skills. I will work with you to achieve the sense of empowerment and peace you long for.

My mission, now that I am working in both Prince William County and Fairfax County is to offer evidence based treatment to individuals and families and commit to the prevention, education, and researched based interventions to those who live in Northern Virginia. For too many years there have been limited services in this area, and I am very excited to be working in BOTH Gainesville and Reston! I share an office with a family therapist and a nutritionist who are also specialized in the field of eating disorders and I am committed to maintaining close working relationships with client's, their family, and with a multidisiplinary team of professional's who have a heart for preventing eating disorders and making a difference within the field of mental health.

Keynote speaker and mental health advocate Ethan Fisher draws from his life experience to challenge, motivate, and inspire his audiences. From star high school athlete to prison inmate, to the recipient of an MBA with honors, Ethan’s life is a lesson in accountability, passion and perseverance.

Growing up in a family that did not speak openly about mental health, Ethan spent his teenage years secretly battling clinical depression while he publicly received accolades for his uncommon talent on the basketball court. He began to self-medicate, leading to a years-long battle with alcoholism and substance abuse that derailed his basketball career and ended in a 3-year prison sentence.

Sober since 2004, Ethan went on to become the first athlete in Colorado to play college basketball on inmate status and was recognized as an All-Conference and Most Valuable Player (MVP). He graduated summa cum laude, was awarded the entrepreneurship student of the year award and was the recipient of the President's award.

Ethan’s experiences became a catalyst for his devotion to inspiring others. He has spoken in hundreds of cities, motivating and engaging almost 100,000 audience members to take hold of their lives and pursue their dreams. A raw and passionate speaker, Ethan captivates audiences with his story of adversity and his techniques for channeling desire into purposeful action.

A staunch mental health and substance abuse advocate, Ethan is the founder of the non-profit, Life Con, to support education and prevention for students and student-athletes. He has been featured in a best-selling book, and interviewed for other books, newspaper articles, and numerous podcast, radio and television shows.

What is perfectionism, and how does it play a role in our mental health?

Where do we learn these ideas about what is perfect, I mean... apart from doom scrolling social media.

On today's episode, Sarah Buino answers LCSW guides us on the origin story of perfectionism, and its root cause might not be what you think.

Sarah Buino, LCSW, RDDP, CADC, CDWF, NMT is a speaker, teacher, therapist and the founder of Head/Heart Therapy — a thriving and respected group practice in Chicago. She is a licensed clinical social worker, registered dual diagnosis professional, certified alcohol and other drug counselor, Certified Daring WayTM facilitator, and NARM Master Therapist, and holds a master’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago.

For more than a decade, Sarah has applied her social work skills supporting individuals, groups, helping professionals, and organizations with issues such as wellness for therapists, shame, antiracism, and trauma. Interviewing prominent guests such as Lissa Rankin, Laurence Heller, Hillary McBride, Sera Beak, Sarah holds intimate and authentic conversations that inspire, educate and entertain listeners. Addressing a wide range of topics from spirituality to antiracism, she invites helping professionals to step into their own healing with courage.

In 2019, Sarah helped launch the podcast Transforming Trauma by The NARM Training Institute and served as the host for the first two years, interviewing leading trauma experts such as Gabor Maté, Dick Schwartz, and Veronique Meade, educating listeners on the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM), a revolutionary approach for healing Complex Trauma (C-PTSD) and restoring connection to self and others.

Patty's Bio

I am Patty Dirilten, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor (CADC). I am also EMDR certified which I have found to be an extremely effective type of treatment for many of my clients.

I have been partnering with people to help move them out of struggle for over half of my adult life. Advocating for people started when I was a child. As early as second grade, I was sticking up for people on the playground and standing up for what was right. In middle school my friends would find me very easy to talk to and laugh with.

In high school I realized that I had to choose a career that involved helping others. I have worked with children, teens, adults and families. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois Chicago.

I feel like having received education in these two areas and the experiences I have had helping others form the foundation of my work. My education and experience have both helped me to see how problems are created, how to come up with effective solutions and how to connect effectively with others. My specialties are addiction, trauma/PTSD, and first responder behavioral health.

I love the work that I do and believe that this shows in the connection that develops between my clients and I. I believe in really getting to know my clients as a whole and meeting them where they are without judgement to help them get to where they want to go. I use several psychological approaches to help, but believe that it is the partnership that is the catalyst to change.

You know how Batman has a utility belt with all kinds of gadgets that help them get out of tricky situations. Each gadget has a unique function to help for a specific problem, but it was built ahead of time knowing that it would definitely come in handy.

Dialectical behavioral therapy or DBT is the Batman utility belt of therapies. Instead of gadgets, you collect the coping skills and since much of mental health disorders, substance use and addiction comes down to how we cope with stress and trauma. It's a therapy that is about as practical as it gets and it's designed to be used in every day life.

In this podcast, you'll hear from author, attorney, and public speaker Stephen Hill.

He answers questions like:

  1. Does someone need to hit rock bottom to seek help and overcome addiction?
  2. How to communicate with a teen or young adult who is using?
  3. What are the factors that inspire change to overcome substance abuse?

Stephen Hill—founder of Speak Sobriety, a young person in recovery, bestselling author, recovery coach, and a fierce attorney advocating for change—is a renowned national speaker on substance use prevention & mental health awareness with a truly inspiring comeback story that everyone must hear.

Stephen has presented in front of thousands of people for over 300 schools, drug-free community coalitions, alliances, and organizations across the country, sharing his cautionary tale of addiction to recovery and beyond, leaving people better educated, feeling hopeful, and motivated to make smart choices and positive change.

But before Stephen had these accolades attached to his name, his reputation was filled with negative stigmas—junky, dropout, felon, failure. A once-promising student-athlete barely graduated high school, dropped out of numerous colleges, was arrested several times, misused deadly amounts of opioids for nearly a decade, was in and out of countless treatment programs, lost his friends, and cost his family tremendous emotional and financial hardship. Towards the end, it seemed like there was no hope for Stephen.

On September 30, 2012, when he entered an extended care treatment program, Stephen began his journey to recovery. After 180 days in treatment when Stephen was able to start thinking clearly, he made a choice to give himself a real second chance at life. Through inner strength, patience, and support from others, Stephen turned his mess into a message by using both his positive and negative life experiences to live out a meaningful life with passion.

Today, Stephen teaches people to be resilient by not only maximizing their strengths but also taking what most people perceive as a weakness or negative experience and turning it into a life lesson for personal growth.

This shift in thinking is how Stephen was able to overcome a severe substance use disorder, work in the field of addiction prevention, treatment and recovery, start his own speaking and coaching company, receive his bachelor’s with honors from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, earn his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, pass the New York bar exam, publish his memoir A Journey to Recovery which was a #1 New Release in Drug Dependency on Amazon, and live a happy and healthy lifestyle with his friends and family.

Some of the personal experiences that Stephen shares are difficult for him to talk about, but he knows it’s worth it if his story helps just one person every time he speaks.

Why You’re Experiencing Guilt & Shame

When you’re struggling with substance abuse and addiction, you will do things you wouldn’t dream of doing sober, just to survive the day. When you’re dependent on a substance, you have to find a way to get that substance, and that dependence doesn’t often leave room for caring about the lengths you went to in order to satisfy your craving. After beginning the journey to recovery, it can be very common to start feeling guilty and ashamed of the things you did while in active addiction. It can be easy to dwell on these dark emotions and to feel overwhelmed by them, but sitting in them for too long is a good way to set yourself up for a relapse.

Breaking The Cycle of Guilt & Shame in Addiction Recovery

Breaking the cycle of guilt and shame that is often present in addiction recovery is no small task. Here are a few things you can do to bring yourself out of these feelings.

  • Recognize That Feelings of Guilt & Shame are Counter-Productive. As you come out of active addiction, It’s easy to be overly critical of yourself as well as the things that you did while you weren’t sober. No one deserves to be plagued by guilt and shame, and dwelling on these emotions is nothing more than self-destructive.
  • Ask For Forgiveness. Everyone makes mistakes. Choosing to change your life and fight against your addiction is an extremely courageous decision, and part of recovery is making amends and asking those you have wronged for forgiveness. While they may not be in a place to be able to forgive you immediately, you will have done your best to make amends and put your actions behind you.
  • Let Go of What You Cannot Control. The only person you are truly in control of is yourself. There are so many things that are outside of your control that can’t alter or change, your past being one of them. Holding onto the things you did in active addiction, the guilt of hurting people, or the shame of having an addiction won’t help your recovery, it will only drag you backward. Letting go of the things in your past is a big step towards being free from addiction.
  • Forgive Yourself. Learning to forgive yourself is a long process. Dwelling on the things that you’ve done in the past is not constructive or beneficial to you. Your past is not what matters, what matters are the choices you make today.
