"I don't know anybody...who's done anything significant who has not connected with their people ."

Joey Mongalo, together with a team of other great coaches, has been at the heart of the revival at the Bulls in South African rugby. Having started his career as a junior player there and then venturing into the corporate world, he was fortunate to have been lured back into the game by a former mentor.

Now specialising as a defensive coach in one of club rugby's most talented coaching units (and rising commercial sports power), Joey is also growing as an academic in the field of organisational psychology, particularly leadership.

On the HPL#25 he shares his experiences, research and personal views from his career as championship winning coach and leadership student.

We especially discussed how understanding the context of the team and their culture is vital for successful leadership as well as the importance of diversity for success.

If you are a leader (or consider yourself to be), then the lessons from this talk can serve as a useful toolset for building high performing teams.

"We are not what we do." - Nic Groom (Professional rugby player @ Edinburgh Rugby Club)

How often do you feel your profession will define you?

And that professional value lies in going all-in on what you do?

In the HPL#22 'Groomie' recounts his road to professional rugby through the disappointments and perspective changes that came with not making the team.

Nic gives some great insights on how to take an outside view of your professional life and how to put your career in it's place, by building interests that can complement your career, but also help provide some healthy distraction.

We also spoke about shifting from the mindset of being the 'outcome of your effort' by not worrying about results but rather fixating on your behaviours and sticking to the process.

Would you think that better performance would require you to spend less time in your head?

Most sport psychologists talk about mindset, mental strength, headsmart. But what if the best performers don't even operate in the mental space when they perform in the moment?

The HPL#21 I welcomes Riki Cribb (Mental coach of the Brumbies Rugby team in Australia) for one of the most fascinating discussions on the show thus far.

We discuss the value of forgetting about your goals, not caring too much when on the big stage and just being present in each moment.

Sounds counterintuitive for high performance? Tune in to find out why these are crucial tools when stepping into the zone, whether you perform on the sports field, in the office or at home.

We all have big achievements waiting for us that often feel impossible to reach. Wouldn't you want to feel as if you are living a life where your daily actions are truly moving you closer to those big life goals?

In HPL#19 high performance coach Sarah Arnold Hall shares her plan for building a life that is aimed at achieving your impossible goals.

*Sarah is living an incredible life inspired by the legacy of her father Rob, who achieved the 'impossible' of completing the Seven Summits challenge, which includes climbing to the summit of Mount Everest. From his story she realised the power of reaching a series of smaller goals en route to chasing the massive ones we often fear.

Sarah is based in Wellington, New Zealand and has built a coaching business that stretches across the globe. In our conversation we dig into a practical plan that will help you to:

  1. Make your goals massive and inspiring,

  2. Create the most important behaviours that will drive you on the right course,

  3. Use your mindset as a tool to motivate your behaviour, and

  4. Build a system of accountability that will keep you on track.

*DISCLAIMER: In my introduction I referred to Sarah being a qualified Psychologist - this is not 100% accurate. Although she studied psychology, she didn't complete her professional qualification as she changed direction to become a high performance coach. This was an error on my part!

Do you define who you are or do you leave it up to others to do it for you?

On HPL#18 Andri discusses the importance of building a solid personal identity with Hilana Claassens.

Hilana is the National Player Development Manager for MyPlayers, which is the commercial arm of the SA Rugby Players' Association. She is responsible for the holistic development of professional rugby players in South Africa. As a psychologist, she manages a team of player development managers spread across South Africa, all with the common goal of helping players plan and grow their own personal wellbeing.

In this episode you will learn how the develop a strong personal identity and why it is important.

We also clarify the importance of separating what you do and why you do it, that your vocation or career is not your purpose, but rather a tool you use to discover and then share it.

You will also learn the importance of relationship and perspective in developing self-awareness as crucial for accepting help and advice and to screen and ignore 'negative noise'.

A strong personal identity is the cornerstone for living a life that values personal development and professional success. Stay tuned to an incredibly insightful discussion with a powerful woman in the South African sporting landscape.

What did you learn during a world-changing 2020?

On HPL#17 I afford myself some time to share a couple of philosophies on what this year taught me about leadership and how it can help you also be a better leader that is driven for performance.

Whether you lead others or just want to lead yourself well, the basic principles for building a high performance life are the same.

In this episode you will learn how a narrow focus can better help you choose what to prioritise when aiming for achievements. You will also learn that being jobless is okay and that true freedom comes from doing your own thing.

Most importantly you will learn that the core of solid leadership is to find something you truly believe in and to stand strongly for it, rather than finding something to stand against. Inspiring people to follow your legacy relies on your ability to get people to believe what you believe in and to be able to understand what motivates people's points of view.

Enjoy the show!

In the episode I mentioned Andy Stanley's talk on leading yourself well. I can strongly recommend it!

We are essentially a collection of everything we have experienced in our past. The things we remember to be important for us make up our values and these can be useful in determining our life purpose.

Emile van Biljon, a Human Behaviour Specialist with the Demartini Institute, talks us through elements of his life story and how his different career shifts helped him discover his life purpose.

In this episode you will hear how he helps coach people to discover their life values and how they form the basis for building a purposeful life. We also chat about the value of personal development, particularly the role of mentors and coaches in helping people ask the right questions that can guide them to a more meaningful life.

High Performance is a result of knowing what we want. Without a clear picture of what that is, we can't act on building the life we want. This episode will show us how to create that clarity and then convert it into a lifestyle that moves towards our purpose every day.

So many of us sit all day at a desk. For most who do it's causing a backward spiral that you may not be aware of. Or you might already have injuries that you didn't even know were caused by sitting.

A couple of years ago I continuously twisted my ankle while running due to an under-firing left leg. I managed to trace this problem back to weak glutes caused by sitting.

In this episode I have a conversation with Stellenbosch Academy of Sport physiotherapist Nadia Clenzos.

Nadia is a rehab physio with the Springboks Sevens team, having also previously worked with WP Rugby and the Junior Springboks.

She helps me find out how reawakening the glute muscles (your butt) and just moving around a bit more during the day can avoid your muscular system from spiralling into an imbalanced mess, like mine did from constant sitting.

Tune in to find out how prolonged sitting might also be the cause of weak glutes and constant muscular issues for you as well.

We live in an age of complexity. We want more knowledge, more skills, more roles and more tasks to drive our lives. We want busyness to be the proof of our productivity.

Ross Williams is my guest on the HPL Podcast #14 and he believes that this is the most ineffective way to successfully build a high performance lifestyle.

Ross is a relationship marketing specialist and rugby coach. He believes in simplicity, mastery and focus and strongly feels that less is more and slower is better. We tend to be more successful in the areas we are best at and if we spend more time on them, we are almost guaranteed a happier life.

He feels that we also need to take life a little slower if we are to keep our minds healthy and strong for when we really jump into seasons of serious performance.

Check out the latest episode of the HPL podcast for our chat on how to build better performance by simplifying, focusing and taking it a bit slower.

Sometimes all we need is an amazing story. Elliot's is one that will change your life.

Elliot Zolile Hanabe overcame so many odds to be where he is today, working as a technical analyst for one of the world's top rugby brands. His story is one that is so familiar in a South African context yet, where most other kids from the street never break out of poverty and desperation, he has managed to build a career in high performance...all the while still keeping a smile on his face.

The HPL podcast episode #13 is all about hope and hard work. It's about making the most of every opportunity and choosing to not let the difficulties of life get you down. If there is someone who has almost earned the right to feel hard done by in life, it's Elliot. Yet, he chooses to focus on the fact that he can still be a source of joy for others.

This is not a typical high performance case study, but it is a great story of resilience and hard work.

"What your day looks like depends on where you need to get to. Every day needs to contain proofs of the end goal you want to achieve." - Andri Stander

Who hasn't had a rough year? It doesn't matter what the year is. When you stretch out your timeline long enough to contain all the things that have happened to you and what you need to achieve, chances are you are increasing the level of stress in your life.

The secret to fighting this is to shrink that timeline to just focus on today. If you can make today great and then tomorrow and then the next, chances are you will achieve more than you would have if you thought about the future too much.

In this episode Andri shares some stories from some tough years in his life and what focusing on the short term does to improve personal progress towards a goal and increase performance.

Keep your head down and get done what needs to be done today and you will have a great day.

"Sometimes you just have to take your focus off the longer term and grind through each day at a time"(paraphrased) - Andri Stander

At this stage everyone is tired of talking or hearing about Covid-19 and the lockdown. But the fact is that it still affects all of us and will continue to do so for a long time to come.

If you are mentally worn out or stressed out because of the uncertainty left behind by this pandemic, you might have lost a job, income, closed your business or worse, then you might take some heart from my own personal approach to moving forward.

For more content on this topic, I wrote an article on the story of Mauro Prosperi a while back. It is incredibly inspirational and teaches us to never give up, even if we really want to.

Run or ride is about alternating between your longer term and your short term focus. In really tough times, it's often good to just keep your eyes on the couple of yards in front of your feet.

"Running became a way for me to escape my problems...[it] taught me to overcome my illness, it's the thing that makes me feel capable." - Annie Bothma (Runner and Endurance Athlete)

Episode #8 features, perhaps, one of the most inspiring stories of overcoming adversity that you may ever listen to. Andri chats to South African endurance athlete and Olympic marathon hopeful, Annie Bothma.

Annie has battled illnesses and setbacks for most of her life while also building a career as a professional athlete. She was diagnosed with coeliac disease as well as hypopituitarism by the age of 18, illnesses which still pose a daily challenge for her. She has also had to recover from two major motor accidents and a serious fall to be able to be in a position today to challenge for a place at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

There is nothing more inspiring than a story of pure grit and tenacity in the face of serious adversity. Viktor Frankl wrote that Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

Annie epitomises this response, refusing to be a victim but a champion and hero, regardless of where she stands on a podium.

"...if you've got a goal and you achieve it, awesome, celebrate it. But then life goes on. You mustn't always get so caught up in goals, it must also be [about] enjoying it." - Vicky van der Merwe (International Triathlete and Coach)

The HPL Podcast Episode #7 features international triathlete and coach, Vicky van der Merwe.

Vicky started Triathlon at age 15 while at Bloemhof Girls’ School in Stellenbosch. Under the guidance of Libby Burrel (who is still her mentor) she moved to Australia after school to train under Olympic coach Stephen Moss. Since then she has raced in over 40 countries, competed in the International Triathlon Circuit and trained under various Olympic Coaches while also completing her LLB Law degree.

Career highlights include: 2016 Rio Olympic Triathlon Squad; SA Team for Rio Olympic Test event in 2015; Multiple South African and African Junior Triathlon Champ; 3 x Biathle World Champ; and Provincial colours in 9 different sports.

In the HPL podcast #7 Vicky chats about her transition into becoming a top-level triathlete and competing on the world stage. She made a transition into coaching when she started the Stellenbosch Triathlon Squad as a training squad for athletes, which has since grown into a 200+ athlete training group, including elite-level athletes, lifestyle athletes and beginners.

We discussed the value of becoming a lifelong 'lifestyle athlete', regardless of fitness level, and how the best way to develop this is to not focus too much on setting goals, but rather to focus on consistent activity, regardless of training level.

This is a great high performance chat for people who are considering taking the step into changing their life and health through training, but don't know how to get going. The best start you can give yourself is to join a group that builds a sense of community around your same desired fitness lifestyle and to enjoy the process, rather than fixate on the outcome.

"...it's good for you as a human being to train...that was always the objective. It was never about winning or becoming better than the next person..." - Coenraad de Villiers (former Olympic Wrestler and coach)

Coenraad de Villiers was a former South African Olympic wrestler and is currently a coach and programme director with WP Rugby and its Academy in Cape Town. He is also a consultant with the Stormers rugby team in Super Rugby.

On the HPL#6 Coenraad takes us through his growth into a lifestyle of training and hard work as the main drivers of chasing self-defined goals.

He committed himself to becoming a South African wrestler as a goal while he was still at school and, having already instilled a lifestyle of consistent training and hard work when he was in primary school, took the pursuit of his sport to the next level.

He left for the USA after school to maximise his level of professional training within their Olympic wrestling programme and competed in events around the world.

His Olympic dream was shattered when the South African national body, that governs Olympic participation, withdrew his entry for the 2008 Beijing games. This setback led to a period of uncertainty and bouts of depression, effectively ending his wrestling career.

Needing to reinvent himself, he became a student for the first time and set in motion a career that would eventually lead him to becoming a conditioning specialist and coach, a pursuit which he is successfully now engaged in.

Coenraad speaks about the value of self-defined goals as the marker for personal activity and hard work. He believes that, in order to keep growing, you should always keep moving and stay involved in whatever is going on around you.

"You measure yourself against the greats that came before you...you start off trying to emulate your heroes and then at one point you realise you have to start emulating yourself." - Basson Laubscher (Rocker and Blues guitarist from Basson Laubscher and the Violent Free Peace)

The HPL#5 features Basson Laubscher, frontman for Basson Laubscher & the Violent Free Peace and former lead guitarist for Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat.

Basson started his musical career as a schoolboy and continued to jam, record and tour with Zinkplaat for over a decade. When the band decided to move on in life, his bandmates all entered other fields but he decided that his electric guitars, amps and pedals would be his main focus.

Another near decade later and he is one of the foremost blues rockers on the underground SA blues scene. He has also recorded and toured with some of South Africa's other top artists in during a life where he was able to follow his biggest passion, which is music.

Basson and his band were jerked off stage in the Netherlands in March as #Covid19 sent the world into lockdown. A tour that took a year to plan ended on the second night.

His attitude towards contently making the best of a situation is an eye-opener and I enjoyed our chat on the value of inspiration and aspiration as fuel for his music-driven life story. He even had his guitar handy to provide some backtracks for his anecdotes. He also shares some advice on how to build a life as a 'professional creative', admitting that he would have made some different decisions if he had the chance.

Stick around if you are a fan of rock 'n roll or blues or in need of finding a way to build your own legacy. Basson has some great insights about the role that heroes can play in your own performance journey.

"Personally, this is just what I believe, I'm not a great player... I'm not an outstanding, amazing player. I just think what got me to this point in my career was the hard work that I put in." - Ruhan Nel (Blitzbok and Stormers rugby player)

Ruhan Nel is professional rugby player with the Stormers in Super Rugby and one of the biggest names on the international Rugby Sevens circuit with the South African national mens' team (The Blitzboks).

On the HPL#4 Ruhan talks about his journey from having to play trials at residence level rugby at his university all the way to becoming a Stormer in Super Rugby.

In South African professional rugby there are a lot of players who were already potential future stars when they left school, having been in the limelight as very talented young age-grade players. Ruhan was not one of them.

Having had to work his way up the ladder in professional rugby, Ruhan represented the Pumas, Lions and Griquas provincial teams as well as the University of the Witwatersrand in Varsity Cup before being selected to join the Blitzboks Sevens Academy in Stellenbosch. From here he continued to impress on the back of his good old-fashioned hard work and willingness to always place the team's needs ahead of his own.

His patience and work ethic paid off as he was offered a contract with WP Rugby in 2017, where he is still playing elite level rugby.

He is a top role model who personifies the value of hard work over raw ability and is a great example to youngsters who didn't take the easy road out of school.

"Goals can be very shallow unless it finds itself on a plate of purpose..."

Werner Joubert was a Survivor SA contestant on season 6 on the South African version of the show, which was staged in the Philippines. Although he finished 4th, he was voted as the favourite contestant by the viewers of the show, which is testament to the way he balanced a great strategy with his charisma and warm personality.

In real life he is a pastor and huge sports nut, having cycled in the Cape Epic mountainbike race two years in a row and regularly chasing surf around Cape Town before moving to the mining town of Secunda to the east of Johannesburg. This shift took him away from the mountains and waves, which switched his strategic approach (and passion for being around people) into a new direction. He wasted no time in bulking himself up in order to return to the rugby field after more than a 5-year absence, joining the Secunda Rugby Club, which allowed him to serve his new community as he did back in Cape Town.

Werner is a strategist who lives life on purpose, with honesty and integrity. He reveals his deep wisdom for good living by talking about the link between finding a personal purpose for life and translating it into practical application.

'Your career is not a destination, it's the vehicle you use for a bigger purpose.' (Paraphrased) - Andri Stander

Join Francois as he helps Andri unpack the story of how he discovered the ingredients of the High Performance Life. Starting as early as his schooldays, with a relative inability to fit into the traditional schooling and education model, Andri learnt that deciding on a career was a fruitless exercise as he couldn't decide 'what he wanted to be'.

'Becoming' a doctor, lawyer, banker, engineer was a status-driven exercise during a time when school and university qualifications were designed to build the industrial world of our parents and grandparents, but which is now obsolete as more people, like Andri, wondered 'why do I want to do this?' was a purpose-driven question that requested a bit more from a career than just being a profession.

Stick around to hear how time spent working in consulting, coaching, professional high performance sport and network marketing, as well as a casual learning foray into behavioural science-and psychology, has taught Andri that life pursuits is part of a process and not a destination to be reached.
