A new round of talks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade deal or NAFTA is taking place in Montreal this weekend. The original trade deal is being renegotiated and is being portrayed as “positive” for Canada and Mexico, but we’re not convinced. The original NAFTA, passed in 1993, eroded sovereignty for public services like mail delivery by Canada Post and the supply of corn in Mexico. The deal entrenched the rights of corporations over countries, especially in the energy sector with oil and gas.
