Over 30 countries have pledged to phase out sales of new gas and diesel cars in upcoming decades. Major automakers Ford and General Motors, among others, will phase out all ICEV production by 2040. Fleets around the world are taking action to cut emissions and meet government-mandated sustainability goals. To say that a global shift and mass electrification are underway could be an understatement.
Still, less than 1 percent of cars and light-duty vehicles on America’s roads today are electric. There are several factors contributing to a slow transition, from production delays to chip shortages to insufficient charging infrastructure. Another major challenge that will become more prevalent as EV adoption accelerates is the overwhelming strain on the nation’s electric grid.

By now, we know that each fleet has completely unique needs, roles and policies that affect day-to-day operations. These different characteristics can have major influence on the decisions made when it comes to fleet electrification. For example, fleets with take-home vehicle policies will have to plan for charging infrastructure and strategy on a case-by-case basis with employees.
On the other hand, fleets that currently keep vehicles in a central location overnight might consider implementing take-home policies if the benefits of at-home charging seem better suited for their fleet. Regardless, there are pros, cons and general considerations for either option, from infrastructure installation to electricity costs to charging schedules.

Alternative fuels are on the top of many fleet managers’ minds these days. Fleets are increasingly exploring new ways to get the job done while remaining operationally efficient, cost effective and sustainable.
As a result, many managers are introducing a mix of electric, hydrogen, and natural gas-powered vehicles into their fleets to work alongside traditional gas and diesel ICEVs. Other managers might be more apprehensive to take the leap into unchartered territory, especially if it risks compromising fleet efficiency.
To compare different fuels, we can look at their gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE). This is the amount of fuel needed to equal the same amount of energy contained in one gallon of gasoline. Something to keep in mind, however, is that fuels have varying efficiency and experience loss of energy from the point of fueling to powering the vehicle in motion.

We all know, especially in today’s sustainability-charged environment, that electric vehicle range is one of the most important aspects for any driver or fleet manager to consider when adopting EVs. It is imperative when it comes to planning the logistics behind daily vehicle routes and charging schedules, as a lower range will mean shorter, inefficient routes and more frequent charging needs.
EV fleet managers will also have to consider the various situations and factors that cause batteries to drain faster or inhibit efficient charging. Extreme temperatures is one of these factors. For fleets operating in extremely hot or cold weather conditions, battery capacity and charging speed can be negatively affected. These effects can be permanent and lessen an EV’s range over time.
Many drivers are now noticing another phenomenon, called phantom drain, affecting their battery performance and fuel efficiency.

Charging infrastructure is a crucial element of electrification that many leave as an afterthought to EV adoption. This can be a big mistake for fleet managers, as installation of EV infrastructure can take up to months depending on the amount and type of stations needed. Before deciding on the equipment needed, fleet managers must consider their charging strategy, budget, available space and the infrastructure company they will work with.
For fleets opting to charge their EVs on the road, drivers can make use of the network of 46,000 public stations consisting of nearly 114,000 chargers across the US. Expansive networks like ChargePoint and Shell make it easy for EV drivers to quickly fuel up on-the-go without having to go back to the fleet yard.
Fleets choosing to charge their vehicles at a central depot or at employees’ homes will have to work with one of the many companies offering infrastructure installation. This process will include choosing desired charger types, the number of plugs needed and discussing the logistics of installation on the premises.

Natural gas is the fastest growing fossil fuel of the past decade and is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to diesel and gasoline. Natural gas occurs naturally, deep below the Earth’s surface, due to the decomposition of plants and animals over millions of years. Over this time, the high pressure and heat change these materials into petroleum oil and natural gas. Varying methods of extraction and purification then turns these raw materials into different types of fuel with many common uses.
Like all fossil fuels, natural gases are unfortunately non-renewable, with supply estimated to run out in about 50 years. However, natural gas is far greener than its petroleum counterpart, making it a more favorable option in terms of environmental friendliness. Natural gas can be stored and used in different states, but each type burns cleanly and emits less than half the amount of greenhouse gases as regular oil or coal.

It seems like every fleet today is searching for a simple answer to their sustainability concerns. Whether that be exploring alternative fuels, using data analytics to minimize waste, or phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles - it’s pretty clear that there is no quick fix. Especially as each fleet is unique in its operation and needs.
And sustainability is complicated. We all know I love sounding a bit like a broken record on this topic – so if you’ve heard this before, bear with me, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Sustainability is multi-faceted. Truly. And we’ll be digging into this topic in a very near-future episode.
For those opting to phase out ICEVs, the go-to alternative is typically electric vehicles. There are nearly 100 different models of EVs on the market today and the promise of electric pick-up trucks in the near future is an exciting prospect as well. For fleets with heavier duty vehicles, however, EVs will not be an option for a very long time.
Another technology being explored and invested into by OEMs is hydrogen-powered vehicles. There is a ton of potential for using the most abundant element on Earth to power vehicles, though the idea has not become mainstream as of yet.

Is it possible to merge the digital universe and drivers on the road?
Depending on the type of technology, as well as who you’re speaking with, it can sometimes have a bit of a negative connotation. Think tracking cookies on web browsers, data privacy issues and the lot. However, it can also be an incredibly helpful bridge towards better optimization AND have a massive positive impact on companies that implement technology well. Just for a bit of transparency, I’m not talking about the privacy issues here.
When we take a look at how technology is a huge part of industries rapidly evolving, the fleet industry especially, it’s interesting to see the specific ways that it can help with vehicle management, sustainability strategies and overall optimization initiatives.

I’m really excited to bring today’s panel to the show – as you might have guessed, it has to do with the trans-Atlantic bridge between North America (so United States and Canada) and the UK. We’re delving into sustainability, international trends, safety and more – but the super exciting piece is that I’m joined today by some of the speakers from the Fleet Vision International Conference that takes place in London, from the 12th-13th of April this year.
For those of you that don’t know of Fleet Vision International – the show or the magazine, or haven’t heard more than just the name – here’s what you need to know. You’ll meet her here shortly. Next, we’ve got Kevin Barcroft, academy training manager for Simply Waste Solutions. Kate Cairns is also joining us today, she’s passionate about saving the planet and vehicle safety – both efforts can be strongly seen through her work at CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Community Safety) and her freelance work through Cairns Consultancy. If you remember a few episodes back, I was on again about low-emissions zones – what they were, how large they were, when they were implemented and why. We were also chatting about when, if ever, we would see them begin to pop up in the United States…well, have I got news for you! It’s happening now!
For a bit of a refresher, Low emission zones (LEZs) are designated areas covering populated city centers that restrict the use of heavy-polluting vehicles. These restrictions can be for certain vehicle types and can operate only during certain times or be a harsher ban of heavy polluters entirely. Vehicles that meet emission standards, like electric, hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles, can continue with free movement within the zone. However, vehicles that don’t meet the strict standards will be fined or penalized upon entry.
Why the fines, and what’s the point? Well, let’s jump right in.

We all know that sustainability and climate change have become increasingly pressing issues for all types of businesses and organizations. There is more internal and external pressure than ever before for organizations to make their practices sustainable and to find different ways of doing so.
For fleets, this pressure can be incredibly overwhelming, especially when you take into consideration that the transportation sector is considered to be the greatest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the United States at 29%.

Today we’re chatting about, what I think, is a rather interesting topic. And I’m surprised that the conversation surrounding this particular thing isn’t more common – or as some might say, “mainstream”. As you could probably tell from the title of this episode, we’re talking about microgrids. What they are, what the history surrounding them is, as well as why we will likely see more of them popping up rather quickly in future.
To put it simply, a microgrid is a local energy grid with control capability, which means it can disconnect from the traditional grid and operate autonomously.

Happy new year and welcome back to the official start of the third season of the Fleet FYIs podcast.
When it comes to vehicle range, operating in what are considered to be suboptimal weather conditions has an inevitable and rather significant effect. Now this includes both extreme cold winter conditions as well as scorching hot summer temperatures – for those of you that live in warmer climates, you know that it’s not just ice that can make the roads slick. The cold happens to be a common argument against adopting electric vehicles, as cold winter temperatures affect battery performance and decreases range significantly.
What a lot of people don’t point out, however, is that cold weather has always affected range in internal combustion engines as well.
So that brings up the question, why is the impact on internal combustion engine vehicles range not brought up as often?

Sustainability and climate change have become pressing issues for all types of businesses and organizations. There is more pressure than ever before for organizations to make their practices sustainable and to report the results publicly. The initial step for making businesses greener is often reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted through related activities.
Greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming, which keeps the planet at habitable temperatures. However, when GHGs are emitted excessively and the atmosphere becomes too warm, temperatures become out of control and weather becomes extreme and unpredictable.
Because of this, greenhouse gas reporting –also known as carbon accounting– is becoming more common at organizations, whether by requirement or done voluntarily for transparency. These reports measure how much emissions the organization emitted in a period, breaking it down into which activities contributed what amount and exactly which GHGs were emitted.

We are back again with twelve days of Fleet FYIs, and today, we’re moving into a Utilimarc-favourite topic.
What is that you may ask?
It’s right-sizing.
And more specifically, what the benefits are when it comes to undertaking a rightsizing initiative for fleets today.
Fleets are actively aiming to reduce costs. Ask any fleet manager today, and the odds are they’ll agree. This could be for a variety of reasons – external (like economic fluctuation) or internal (such as an interest to outsource or improve operations).
Fleet growth and decline is something to be expected, as economies are always changing and there will always be ways to better optimize your fleet. The key here, is to understand the benefits of right-sizing your fleet, and how in doing so, you will be better equipped to deal with any factors that may affect your annual budget or operational strategy.

If you own an electric vehicle or you’re considering buying one, you’ve likely heard stories of people whose battery charge ran out in the middle of the day. An EV isn’t like a gas-powered car, where you can just stop at a fueling station and fill your tank in under five minutes. Batteries can take hours to charge.
If you run out whilst you’re on your trip, that could potentially create a sticky situation.
It means you may need to spend unplanned, extra time at a charging station for a few hours if you’re lucky enough to find one nearby.
A 2019 study by Volvo found that more than half of the drivers surveyed were unwilling to buy EVs because they were afraid they’d run out of power before being able to charge their vehicle, while 49 percent voiced concern about the limited number of charging stations.
That’s a pretty big deal.
But whether it’s infrastructure concerns or attitude towards a new technology – does it provide some insight as to whether or not range anxiety is still a valid concern? Let’s take a look.

If you remember, not too long ago, I recorded an episode about low emissions zones – specifically those in London (over in the UK), Norway and even the few that are starting to pop up here in the states. The so-named Green Zones operate in Santa Monica ahead of the, I believe, 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles – and right now, I think it only affects last mile delivery – ensuring that these vehicles that operate within the zone are completely tail-pipe emissions free.
The reason I’m bringing this up is that recently, as you may or may not have noticed, the London Ultra-Low-Emission Zone has increased in size.

To give you a bit of a general overview - business intelligence seems to be one of those buzzwords that companies throw around when talking strategy and future-proofing solutions, but many find it hard to define – at least in a way that makes sense to the masses. Is it a system? A service? A strategic approach? Yes. To all of the above. But it’s actually more than that too.
Business intelligence (otherwise called BI) is the technology and practice used to perform data analytics and reporting for companies. It offers a view of current, historical and predictive data all consolidated onto one platform. However, the BI used for an overseas shipping company or a major manufacturer is completely different from the BI used for managing fleets. Successful BI implementation is best paired with people who know the ins and outs of the industry and what the data represents. Deep domain knowledge + a platform that helps you visualize your data in a way custom-tailored to your own organization? That’s where the magic starts.
Regardless of the industry though, BI is implemented with one common goal in mind –to help in making informed, data-backed business decisions.

Today I wanted to dig into a topic that I’ve been noticing many people ask in many forums, comment sections and new launch announcements worldwide – and that is, will electric vehicles really have that much of an impact on the environment?
We’ve all been told that a zero tailpipe emissions vehicle may be the solution to climate action mandates and policies – but what if it’s not as simple as that?
Fleets all over the world are quickly turning to electric vehicles as a solution to combatting climate change. It makes sense, as transportation is the largest contributor of CO2 emissions, making up about one-fifth of global emissions each year. It’s leading fleets and their managers to wonder whether or not the best solution is truly going electric, or if it’s more of a sustainable balance. (If you’re a frequent listener of this show, you’ll know that this is more of the side of the fence that I stand on).

As with any business organization, cost reduction and efficiency are key objectives in year-to-year strategy. Fleet managers are actively aiming to keep costs at a minimum, especially with how quickly they can add up when dealing with high-value assets. In order to know where costs can be cut, it is essential to fully understand each vehicles’ total cost of ownership (TCO).
TCO is the sum of all costs associated with acquiring a vehicle and keeping it operating throughout its lifecycle. This number can be expressed as an overall TCO or broken down into cost per mile, making it simple for managers to compare vehicles’ cost-efficiency. Of course, this makes TCO very subjective to a vehicle’s projected lifespan, as well as fluctuating factors like fuel costs and taxes.

We all know how intrigued I am by the electrification of fleets. Although I’ve stated multiple times on this show that I think moving forward, electric will not be the only solution – it will have to be a balance – it’s still a topic that’s front and center of mind more often than not.
Fleet electrification is well underway within many different sectors across the globe – from municipal fleets to last-mile delivery vehicles. With sustainability goals becoming stricter and more urgent, many fleet managers are drawn to electric vehicles’ promise of zero tailpipe emissions. Others are more attracted to the idea of less routine maintenance and associated upkeep costs.
Despite the benefits of switching from ICE vehicles to EVs, however, there is an inarguable lack of EV options available to fit everyone’s needs. As of 2020, there were about 370 models of electric car on the market, with electric pickup trucks in very early production and electric utility vehicles being nonexistent. Because of this, total electrification is simply not a possibility for all fleets.

Before OEMs launched their own telematics options, there was a lost opportunity for both manufacturers and customers who needed more profound insights. For OEMs this is a huge opportunity to bring a product to the table that is ready-to-go off the lot and offers a deeper, more dynamic view into fleet statistics.

For as long as I’ve been in the fleet industry, I’ve been twiddling around with this question. Can fleets really be sustainable without EVs?
With a major lack of electric vehicle options to replace medium- and heavy-duty ICE trucks, EVs are unfortunately not a viable option for many utility fleets around the world…yet.
As manufacturers continue to prioritize the electrification of non-commercial cars, SUVs and pickup trucks, fleets in need of heavier duty electric equipment are left without options. Which isn’t great – but in all fairness, it is easier to start with a vehicle line-up with smaller battery needs.
This doesn’t make internal combustion engine fleets a lost cause for sustainable practice though.
With sustainability being such a hot topic of the past decade, experts and advocates have evaluated how nearly all human activity could be improved to be greener. This is good news for fleet managers who do, in fact, have options for moving forward with sustainability goals, despite the lack of EVs.

Greenhouse gases - such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and certain synthetic chemicals - trap some of the Earth's outgoing energy, which in turn retains heat in the Earth's atmosphere.
The transportation industry along accounts for roughly 29% of the United States' greenhouse gas emissions. If we look at this with a world view - ten years ago, it was at 14%. Since then, the numbers have significantly grown.
But what exactly does this mean for fleets? And how are these two substances harmful? Well - you've landed yourself on the right episode to answer that question.

In today’s episode of Fleet FYIs shorts – we’re tackling a pretty common “tool”, I guess you could call it, for fleets. We’re talking about fuel cards. More specifically, the history behind fuel cards, why they’re used for fleets and how they first began to become a popular tool.
A fuel card or fleet card is used as a payment card typically for all types of fuels at gas stations or filling stations. Whilst most fleets use these for fuel (hence the name, fuel cards) fleet cards can also be used to pay for vehicle maintenance and expenses at the discretion of the fleet owner or manager.
But wouldn’t you think that a standard credit or debit card could also suffice?

I just got back from London, a city that – if you’re a frequent listener of our show – you’ll know is a city that is quickly electrifying. Trains, busses, subways and vehicles alike. And it got me thinking – in order to power all of these electric assets, you of course need batteries. A term that’s been floating around a lot lately in the industry is “lithium-ion batteries”.
If you’ve heard of electric vehicles, which hopefully all of you have at this point, you’ll have heard of lithium-ion batteries. But with all the buzz surrounding this newer type of battery technology – we wanted to dig into how they were made.

I wanted to dedicate an entire episode to EVs – in part, because we’ve been speaking about them pretty frequently here on this show, but also because there’s a lot surrounding this technology that sometimes is breezed over when it comes to new launches and sometimes controversial implementation policies and adoption mandates.
It’s complicated – I know.
Especially because not every vehicle class or industry can electrify. And when the pressure is on from upper management and consumers to become more sustainable, it can be frustrating to say the least.
Whether it’s hesitation or logistics – I know there’s a lot of questions surrounding the electrification movement. With any new technology, there are always going to be differences of opinions and potential concerns. And electric vehicles are no different.

Low emission zones are designated areas, commonly the greater area surrounding a dense city center, where polluting vehicles (more often than not, internal combustion engines) are restricted or entirely prohibited. These areas allow access only to vehicles that meet set emission standards, such as electric, hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
Vehicles that don’t meet these requirements will be fined or penalized for entering the low emission zone, unless previously exempt by paying a daily fee. Alternatively, some cities offer the option of retrofitting higher emission vehicles with diesel particulate filters to meet the standards set.
But what’s the point?
The purpose of these restrictions being to protect air quality in big cities, and to begin to move toward those net-zero emissions goals that many countries have set for the next few decades.

The internal combustion engine and use of fossil fuels undoubtedly transformed the way that humans lived. It’s primarily because of inexpensive, accessible electricity and fuel-run transportation that our society has been able to achieve the level of innovation that it has today.
Still, as I’m sure you all know by now, there is a growing concern about climate change that is forcing us to rethink our energy consumption and generation methods going forward.
Together with the transition to electric vehicles, comes the need for clean, renewable energy sources. It is projected that renewable energy will be the largest electricity source by 2050, as the world moves to completely phase out fossil fuels. With more fleets looking to take on EVs, it is essential to also consider how these EVs are being powered and whether it is a clean, sustainable practice.

It’s been a bit of a blustery one in Minnesota today – torrential rainstorms and even a severe thunderstorm warning earlier in the day.
It’s actually rather fitting I think – especially for today’s episode. My guest today is coming to us all the way from the UK, David Savage. And we all know that the UK is certainly famous for its rain, amongst many other things of course.

When you think about it – it’s not just time that’s been moving quickly these days – but technology and driving innovation too. If we were to look at electric vehicles again – yes again, we all know that I love exploring all facets of the term “sustainability” on this show, the timeframe for electric vehicle technology, infrastructure and innovation has shortened dramatically. It went from a span of 5-10 years being the average to see any major change in innovation, to 1-2 years being the standard.

Sustainability isn’t just about who can electrify first. It’s not about who can decarbonize their electric grid the fastest. Heck, it’s not even about alternative fuels. What it is about, is prolonging the longevity of your organization from the ground up - and for some that may be through electrification, green energy, alternative fuels and resource conservation. For others it may be by simply making their ICE vehicles more sustainable. Simple as that.
A lot of the progress that has been made in this sustainability movement has really started to rev up in Europe. The Netherlands, Norway - specifically in cities like Oslo, Amsterdam, London in the UK and even eastern Asia. These are the places where sustainability initiatives are currently being piloted, and once demonstrated to be successful - have other cities and countries closely following suit.

Today, Utilimarc senior analyst, Paul Milner, and I sit down to talk success metrics for fleet management. We all know about cost per mile - right? At least, it seems pretty self-explanatory.
But as fleets become more sophisticated with the addition of new technology, the need for metrics to evolve also remains consistent. We're starting with the basics: cost per mile and cost per gallon. What to use them for, when to use them, so on and so forth. We're also going to touch on a new metric that we’ve been using a lot lately – and one that our customers have been finding a lot of value in, cost per usage day.
It’s a bit of an evolved metric, branching off of simply using cost per mile or cost per gallon only – as fleets are always evolving and technology is always changing…especially if your fleet operates in multiple regions.

In theory, the development of eFuels can be a huge opportunity for fleets of vehicles, aircrafts and even ships. Fleet managers are exploring various alternatives to their current practices, and there can be great potential if biofuels are integrated into their climate change strategies. The advent of these fuels will be especially beneficial to fleets who are not ready to get rid of their ICE vehicles entirely, or who cannot yet make the investment to replace their entire fleet with EVs.
When introducing anything new, a change in attitude and understanding of how this product can improve our lives is crucial for public acceptance. For some, it may be that they need to undertake a rightsizing initiative, for others, more extreme measures. Either way, looking at your fleet data will allow you to be better equipped to deal with any factors that may affect your annual budget or operational strategy.
