Claire Taylor

Have you ever wondered why there are so many guidebooks for travel, blogs on where to go and what to see, but there is no guide to thriving while living a travelling, alternative lifestyle?

Claire Taylor thought so too, and now she is on a mission to shine a light on what it takes to thrive in this alternative. On the road to thriving is a podcast that celebrates and demystifies the journey to thriving as a traveller.

It features a collection of honest, real and raw conversations with travellers and nomads, about their personal journeys to thriving in an alternative lifestyle. We will be covering topics from loneliness and community, ways to work online, health habits for a life on the go, finances, mental health, and so much more. In doing so, showing us that it is possible to thrive on the road less travelled.

Come join us, on the road to thriving!

What do you do when you reach your dream or outgrow an old way of living/travelling? While I ordinarily chat with travellers, nomads and global citizens about their journey to how they are thriving in this lifestyle, in this MRT (my road to..) segment, I share my personal (and messy) journey as it evolves. In each episode, I share what I have learned and put into practice in my own life around travel and pursuing a life of freedom. In this week's episode, I chat about:

  • How I'm shifting into a new season of travel (and where I'm going next!)

  • What I'm looking to manifest in this new season

  • The importance of an intentional practice to cultivate a free life

  • Re-centring on my purpose and my 'why' - a few key question's I've been asking myself from an incredible article by Mark Manson about finding your purpose

Ever wondered what it would be like to travel the world in a single-engine plane?

Well, in today's episode, I sit down with Sam Porter – a 22-year-old private pilot from Vancouver, Canada, who has spent the last 8 months doing exactly that. Her family (@fly5inthesky) has set a massive goal of flying around the world in their single-engine GA8 AirVan, travelling to over 50 countries in 14 months.

In this episode, we dive into:

  • A day in the life of travelling in a single-engine plane
  • How to pack for a worldwide expedition (with only 9kg per person!)
  • Sam shares some of her best and worst experiences from travelling to over 20 countries so far
  • How to navigate medical emergencies as a full-time traveller ...and much more!

It is said that “less people have flown around the world in a single-engine plane than have summited mount Everest”, and it's hard to say if there even has been a family that has done it all together, completely VFR and with no autopilot.

Be sure to follow along the journey over at @fly5inthesky and you can connect with sam @samanthaporter

What do the 4-hour-work-week and AI have in common? Well, both have completely shifted my perspective on the traditional narrative around the 40-hour work week. In my last solo last episode, I touched on working from the road, but lately, there have been some shifts around what it looks like to work on the road. So I thought I would do a full episode on working on the road. Chatting about how I have started using AI, how I'm considering getting an assistant (as a low-income earner), my priorities for working on the road and more.

Internalized capitalism is a real thing, and learning, or rather, unlearning, those beliefs that unless we are productive, we aren’t worthy - is a huge part of why many choose to pursue a more nomadic or global lifestyle. In this episode I sit down with Carolyn Martin from @galaxy.tripping to chat all about her experience with taking the leap into travelling full time in her Toyota galaxy.

We talk about redefining the age-old question of ‘what do you do’ to be more than your job, and the identity crisis that came along with it. Whether your travelling full time trying to unlearn these systems for yourself, or working along the way and trying to cultivate a more healthy relationship with your work identity, this episode is for you!

Have you ever struggled with your health on the road? Mental or physical. Or know someone who has?

In this episode I am chatting with Indie from @onthefreeside, all about her journey with navigating a chronic condition while travelling full time. This episode is about the power of lifestyle, reducing stress and living a life on your terms.

Indie is a wandering soul who started travelling in high school by taking herself to Africa. Her travels took her all the way to Australia, where she began really struggling with her health. After many doctor appointments and advocating for herself, she was diagnosed with endometriosis. But she didn’t let that stop her. Instead, she learnt how to navigate surgeries, medications and appointments, all while living her best life in a van travelling around Europe - and now building a tiny home in the Swedish woods.

Whether you are navigating health or mental health on the road or know someone who is - this is the episode for you!

PS. this episode was recorded a few months ago. Since then, Indie and Joel have moved into their house in the Swedish woods and are travelling part-time experiencing winter van life in Sweden. For more, follow their adventures over @onthefreeside

Whether you are a traveller or a creator - chances are web 3 is on your radar. These borderless, decentralised platforms appear to go hand in hand with a travel lifestyle...but what exactly is web 3? how do we monetize this new world? and how will it impact the way we travel and work? These were all questions I set out to answer in this conversation with Amy Suto.  Amy began her career as a Hollywood TV writer before jumping into the tech industry. Now, she is a six-figure freelance writer in web3, writing copy and narrative stories for innovative NFT, metaverse, and crypto-related projects. When she's not writing, Amy travels the world and works remotely from bakeries in Prague or coffee shops in Milan.  In this episode, we chat about what exactly web 3 is, and what it could mean for travellers and creators. Hope you enjoy it!  PS.  If you have loved this episode, we would be so grateful if you could leave us a review - let us know what you thought (and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to get notified of future episodes + show your support). WE ARE BACK! and to kick things off I wanted to talk about... well, capitalism.

In this modern world, there are so many expectations for every moment of our lives to be profitable. But that's not what living on our own terms in a more alternative way of living is all about.

In this episode, I am sharing the story of what happened in the last few months, how I have been dealing with this internal battle, why I took a break and asking the question ... is it me or capitalism?

Income is important, but can the work we need to do be done in a way that doesn't rob us of our joy? can we live full lives outside of that, which serves only the purpose of loving our lives?

Let me know over on the road to thriving podcast!

In this episode Claire sits down with Laura and Aaron from @parkingonthewildside to discuss their journey to thriving in Vanlife and building a social media presence to community of over 85 thousand people as an avenue to share their creative gifts.

After years of working minimum wage jobs, feeling like they weren't able to full put their creative talents to use or really have enough money to support themselves, they decided to try vanlife as a vehicle to move towards their dreams of off grid and creative living. They talk about how living in a Van gave them a chance to spend more time together creating music and art, and to learn about places they would want to live, about how to build tiny homes and begin practicing the day to day life off grid living.

As part of this dream, they started creating content on Instagram looking to inspire others to pursue their own dreams as well as to cultivate a community seeking more whimsy and wild in their life. After two years of creating and a lot of trial and error and investing in their dreams, in the last few months they have grown from having a community of 15K to 85K. They share what that journey looked like, the things that really helped them in reaching that dream. They also talk about how they have chosen to give value to that audience, how they have stayed in integrity through that process and who as a result are now in turn able to help support their dreams and talents in a way minimum wage jobs never could. They discuss the duos most recent project: the handmade book 'Dreams of Whimsy and Wild'. In this book they give incredible insight into the power and importance of consistently indulging your dreams, and they give some of the process of how this book came to life and how they showed up in indulging their dreams to getting to where they are now.

If you have a dream of cultivating a life a little more on the wildside, and feel like your talents don't fit inside the box of societal norms, then tune in to hear this couples ever evolving journey on the road to thriving.
