Two Chocolate Cakes: Recent Episodes

Jen Coleslaw

Two Chocolate Cakes, A Culinary Memoir follows the writer from one of her earliest family memories—making a scratch chocolate cake with a purloined recipe for her father’s birthday, a cake he would never eat on his birthday because he would be passed out drunk before the sun would set, to another chocolate cake, made by strangers but sent by friends, some 40 years later, and all the culinary and emotional layers in between those moments.

A thoughtful (as in full of thought) episode about how, in the words of the Rolling Stones, with respect to Parents (ie., fathers) you can't always get what you want, but you can get what you need--by going outside the family unit and finding positive role models for either your kids or even yourself. If your spouse or the father (or mother!) of your kids isn't making it happen because they're ill or they're flawed or broken, find other people to fill the gaps.

Also: What's at the farmers market, how Rufus Poofus All Around Doofus is doing, what's growing in and eating up my garden.

Plus the food holidays.

The bad air last week and the unfortunate plan to clean up the living room of all the cat hair and dust really did me and my poor schnoop in this week so this episode is mostly a bit of complaining, two coughs that I didn't edit out (sorry) and food holidays. Hopefully I'll get back on track this weekend.

I'm still hoping for THREE more Patreons so I can get that super awesome handmixer. You can support this (and SideCar) Podcast by joining the patreon at patreon.com/twochocolatecakes or if you're a Spotify user, supporting the podcast here for 4.99! (but if you join Patreon you get perks!)

A reminder that if you're listening to SideCar on this feed--You'll want to find the SideCar Podcast with Jen Coleslaw feed after the end of June because I won't be pushing the SideCar pods out on this feed--this will be only for Two Chocolate Cakes episodes! This feed will become Two Chocolate Cakes only--and those episodes will drop monthly because they are a lot harder to write and record.

A Few Things To Know:

Zeppoles for Saturday! This is far more important than whatever happens on Friday

The Bakery I talk about is The Red Truck Bakery in Warrenton (you can google and find all the stories)

If you are local-ish and want to help build a very small pollinator habitat in the middle of a kind of crappy historic parking lot at a brewery on Sunday, come on by Aslin Beer 9:30 am -11:30 am March 19.

We'll be doing another event there on April 16--Earth Daze which is all day (11-5) and much bigger and a good time and you should come if you want. Both events are free and pretty low stakes.

Anchor just became Spotify for Podcasters so hopefully that won't slow down my ability to move the SideCar pods over to their own feed.

Alert! 🚨 ‼️ 🔔 Do Not Forget!

Wednesday Morning: Rabbit 🐇 🐰

And if you forget--don't tell me about it. I do not want to know.

Wrap up of Food Holidays for All of February and there are some goodies!

Two really good meals I had this week and I tell you all about them.

Also it is Blood Orange Season so it is time to make Blood Orange Marmalade.

Ok so here are (some of) the lyrics to Mr Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan--made famous by the Byrds and I was thinking about it a lot this week because of the passing of David Crosby

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it

PS it is possible I we're at the 1 year anniversary of the podcast? How should we celebrate?

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring ting tingling too.... you know it's lovely weather to just stay home.

Here's hoping that whatever your holiday wishes are--whether they are to be with friends and family, or to be alone to celebrate solstice, to be on a warm beach or watching "snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead" (James Joyce)  that you're having the holiday you want.

In this episode we go over belonging and holiday rituals and some holiday history, and of course the food holidays as well as a good clapback for you to use  on anyone in your family who dares to define "woke" as a bad thing.   Reminder: If it is not Good News to the Poor--it is not Good News.

Remote broadcast today complete with weird echo, and other noises I had no control over. Let's call them "ambiance." You never realize how loud your hotel room is until you have to try to record something in it.  Also, the slowest upload speeds ever.

Here's the link to the Anthropocene Reviewed episode I mentioned--definitely give it a listen and if you haven't heard the entire run of 37 episodes, I highly recommend.  You can also hear most of the episodes as an audiobook but the podcast is free and actually has more essays than the book.

In this episode, I talk about who we would line up 10 miles and 30+ hours to spend 10 seconds saying goodbye to, the way folks in the UK are with the Queen. There's also a little musing about how the media would cover big historical events like the JFK or MLK assassinations or other important news stories.

I got my booster shot this week and I felt kind of unwell today but I had to put some time in at the animal hospital, helping out and I was exhausted so I apologize in advance for how bad the editing is on the pod this week. I've been overloaded the last few weeks but hopefully, things will settle down soon.

Anyway, in this episode I talk about how invasive weeds in my neglected garden are a heavy-handed metaphor that I didn't even realize until I was more than halfway through writing this. Funny how that works out.

Also: new segment alert: Cookie Correspondent!

After my parents' divorce, Kay took over hosting Christmas. She made it special after Mom swore never to celebrate holidays again, even putting a tiny 2 food christmas tree in the room I stayed in.

Finally, there are just a few more episodes (2!)  in this season. Then we'll just have SideCar episodes while I put together Season 2 of Two Chocolate Cakes. I think you'll be pleased with the stories and the recipes.

This was definitely not on the list of things to talk about. And it's a long one!

Also, finally got some good strawberries at the Falls Church Farmers Market.

There was something about Portland that gave me courage. I don't know if it was the weather, or the fact that I had a job where I was respected, or if it was all that incredible beer (and let me tell you, the beer was OUTSTANDING) or if it was the rain, but it was something. I only wish that I had banked some of that courage for the future.

Where I talk about the saga of losing my health insurance, looking for strawberries and the women in my life who were not my mother who have been so influential in my development as a decent human.

AND

I managed to get through the whole thing without coughing! (don't worry, I'm not sick, I just have seasonal asthma--but you know what helps? Nutty Fudge!)

How to meet new neighbors in a new city!

Step one: Move across the country where you know one person

Step two: have an accident

Step three: figure out who in the building full of strangers can help (spoiler alert--it is the person dancing to Phantom of the Opera)

So the ants are back and I couldn't find strawberries at the Farmers Market on Saturday. You'll be hearing more about my arch nemesis THE ANTS this summer.

If you are at all curious about the Farmers Markets--On Saturdays we go to the one in Warrenton VA (the most info for all these entities is on Facebook and while I have to use FB so you can just search for them) as well as the one in City of Manassas. But because they are in different counties we can usually only go to one or the other. On Sundays we go to The Dale City Farmers Markets. On Tuesdays the Farmers Market is at Tacketts Mill, Wednesday Wakefield Park in Fairfax County, and Thursdays is City of Manassas in the morning, and Pfitzner Stadium Complex (Government Center for Prince William County) in the afternoon (this is a new one--but a lot of the same vendors we know from Sundays are there.) There are lots more markets but these are the ones we usually go to. If you check out the vendor list and want me to try something specific, let me know via twitter. You can find me at @twochoccakes and you can also message me via the website twochocolatecakes.com or at twochocolatecakes@gmail.com

What was the first thing you learned to make when you left home? Do you remember? Did you have some kind of crazy college dorm room food hack? I did and IT WAS DELICIOUS!

PS. You can actually hear Peat yowling on this one. I just did not have it in me to re-record. So you get two sad cat meows as a gift with purchase.

What are the best gifts you've given or gotten? For me, it is always gifts that say "I was thinking of you" or "I know you so well that you didn't have to even mention this and I knew you'd love it" This week we talk about a gift Ben gave me for Valentines Day--a subscription to a Cookie of the Month Club (and this is not an ad--I just love the company for reasons that will become evident!) called Doughp--check them out.

My father's signature meal. After he got sober and changed jobs, my mother started working two nights a week at a halfway house. Dad and I took turns making dinner but neither of us were particularly skilled in the kitchen, but we liked what we ate.

In this episode, I pronounce zeppole at least three different ways, and crepes two different ways. I added a new calendar to the mix and really now I cannot be stopped. And I will apologize in advance for the squeaking noises--I talk with my hands even when I am recording and it makes things move imperceptibly in my recording studio (ie., on top of a laptop box, in the bedroom) and the microphone picks it up!

I realize after I recorded that this episode was very Christian centric (despite me being an agnostic) and I'd like to learn more about foods from other holidays and other religions so feel free to share with me, either via twitter, or messaging at TwoChocolateCakes.com your stories, or if you'd like to come on the pod and talk about YOUR faith tradition foods! I bet you have some stories!

Welcome to SideCar, the Two Chocolate Cakes side hustle podcast that I promise is more cheerful than the memoir. If you like my Twitter feed about #FoodHolidays and pets and what I am growing in the garden, then you'll want to listen to the episodes that will be clearly marked SideCar--If they are popular enough I'll put them in their own feed. SideCar has its own music, I record it all in one take, and is more a conversation.  SideCar episodes will drop on Saturdays or Sundays, with the original Two Chocolate Cake episodes on Wednesdays or Thursdays.  I hope that if you want to talk about YOUR food holidays, and rituals around food, what you're growing in your garden, and really whatever you're eating these days, you'll hit me up on Twitter and we can record an episode together! This is a work in progress so let me know what you think.

There's something about other people's kitchens that I will always love--probably because they have always been safe harbor for me (for the most part) and the very first (and for the next several decades) "family" kitchen for me was the Roch's kitchen where I learned how to make Macaroni and Cheese.

Let's set the table, shall we?

This whole series started out as a literal recipe box that I still have, more than 25? maybe more? years later. I was looking at it as a creative writing prompt.

Even though I keep a lot of my recipes in an online recipe keeper now because I am afraid of losing them, I still have my little recipe box, and all the cards. And every single one of them, even the ones not represented in this series, tell a story.
