I was asked to speak at a woman's Christmas dinner. It was my first time EVER speaking in front of a crowd and I stumbled through it. While I was asked to speak for 45 minutes, I feel that this message really should have been three separate messages.
1 Making Time for Advent
2 Asking God to Close Doors
3 What we Fill Our Lives With
I also think I have the beginnings of praying scripture over yourself as well as some separate stories about football, dogs and carrying too much in our purses.
While I stumbled through, it just made me want to share more messages to continue to get better at it. My heart will always be soft to the women at MRC who let me practice on them. Bless those lovely women.
Friends have asked to hear the message and so a week later, here I am finally recording it for them.

We met with some new friends this past weekend and were talking about our families. “Wait, four boys? You have FOUR boys?” one asked.
Yes.
And look, still surviving it all.
As it is the week of Mother’s Day, I thought I would attempt to share with you a brief look at what it has been like raising four boys.
It was harder to sum it up than I expected it to be. There is so much to say, how do I fit it all in one column?
Here is my secret to raising boys: I didn’t know what I was doing, I missed the class on how to raise them, so I just kept learning as I went along.
When someone asks me how on earth I survived raising four boys, I can tell you that I honestly don’t know. I was too tired to take notes (although, I did blog a lot about our adventures when they were little). I was legit learning as I went. I failed a lot. It helped greatly that God gave me my amazing mom to help me when I became a new mom myself (thank you!). It also helped that God gave me this absolute adoration for being these boys’ mom.

I have a thing about front porches. I can’t help but notice them as I drive by them. I have been known to send people a note saying, “I just want you to know, your front porch is adorable. Great work on that!”
If you ask my youngest son, he has some ideas for our front porch. He tells me how we need to build out the porch, wrap it around the house to include our large front window, extend it over to the “porch room”, and make sure we lay it with the deck boards that will never go bad. We need to have the porch braced up with some big wooden pillars, we can even use rocks if I insist, and a railing might be nice too.
Abe is for hire if you need to dream up your front porch, back porch, or backyard fish pond.
While I like his ideas a lot, he seriously has a talent with this sort of thing, that really wasn’t going to happen in a day.
On our one beautiful, felt-as-if-summer-had-arrived-day we had this past weekend, Abe and I worked on redecorating the front porch.
My great regret is that I took zero photos before and after.
Our front porch is a bit of an anomaly.

Has this ever happened to you? I don’t think I could be the only one who has found oneself in this situation.
I washed my hands at the kitchen sink and reached for the ever near kitchen towel. A bird was at the feeder that I was watching and so I was not watching what my hands were doing. I wouldn’t have even paid any attention to the towel had my hand not gone through it.
You read that correctly.
My hand went through it.
My beloved kitchen towel had a hole right down the middle of it.

My Adventures With a Ford
I couldn’t make the blaring music stop, but I handled it very well. I screamed, shut off the engine. It still wouldn’t stop, so I opened the door and stuck my head out - still buckled - and tried not to cheer when the music thankfully stopped. I pulled myself back into the vehicle, trying to avoid eye contact with all of the other parents in the pick up spot at school.
Maybe I should start at the beginning.....
