I'm doing a podcast, but not like the typical fluffy marketing podcast (I really don't like fluff). This podcast has a 3-part recipe. Ingredient #1: The Doers. These are the social directors, marketing managers, and communications specialist on the ground doing the work, and I'm going to convince them to tell me all of their secrets. Ingredient #2: Consumer Data. We'll look at consumer behavior and marketing best practice outside of higher ed and apply them back to higher ed. Ingredient #3: Actionable Takeaways. We're going to mix together higher ed secrets, marketing best practices, and consumer data to create action items you can do and use today. This podcast is for doers in higher ed marketing communications and is a a part of The Enrollify Podcast Network.
Transfer students represent one of the biggest enrollment opportunities in higher education, yet many institutions still treat them as an afterthought. In this episode, Allison sits down with Jaime Smith, author of The Complete Guide to College Transfer, to discuss what transfer students actually need from colleges and universities. Jaime explains why institutions should move beyond being merely "transfer-friendly" and instead strive to become transfer-affirming, creating experiences that support students from application through graduation.

For the 100th episode of The Application, Allison Turcio isn't looking back. She's looking at the assumptions shaping enrollment marketing and asking whether they're still true. After 100 conversations with enrollment leaders, marketers, researchers, financial aid experts, student affairs professionals, and higher education innovators, four themes kept resurfacing. They challenge some of the most common beliefs in our industry: Is enrollment marketing really about communication? Do institutions build trust, or do people? Should students have to figure out how higher ed works? And does more information actually lead to better decisions? Drawing on lessons from 100 episodes of The Application, Allison offers a practical framework for creating experiences that build trust, reduce friction, and help students move forward with clarity and confidence.

Enrollment teams are being asked to do more than ever before, but many institutions are still operating with structures designed for a very different era of higher education. In this episode, Allison talks with Jack Corby, VP at Stevens Strategy, to explore what happens when enrollment teams outgrow their organizational structure. From data fluency and systems thinking to project management and team design, Jack shares what modern enrollment operations need to succeed and where many institutions are getting stuck. They discuss the growing tension between relationship-driven recruitment and increasingly technical enrollment work, how leaders can tell the difference between being understaffed and misstructured, and why curiosity, adaptability, and cross-functional collaboration matter more than ever in higher ed today.

Financial aid is often treated like a backend function post-enrollment after the student has already decided. But in reality, it shapes everything. In this episode, host Allison talks with Rachel Gordon, VP of Student Financial Aid Services at American University of Antigua College of Medicine, about what happens when financial aid and marketing stop operating in silos and start working together. They explore why cost is one of the most emotional parts of the student journey, and how the way we talk about it can either create clarity or create risk. Rachel shares how financial aid teams support students through complex, real life moments, and why that work often continues long after graduation.

AI isn’t just changing how students search for colleges, but changing how they decide. In this episode, we talk with Jason Smith, Founder of OHO Agency, about how generative AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming a new layer of the enrollment funnel. With more than 75% of students now using AI in their college search, institutions risk being evaluated, compared, and even eliminated before a student ever visits their website. Jason also introduces the AI Visibility Scorecard, a tool OHO designed to help institutions understand how they’re represented in AI and where critical content gaps exist.

What if the students already on your campus could shape your most powerful stories? Greg Carter, Director of Strategic Enrollment Marketing and Communications at Virginia Tech, joins Allison to share how they built a student-powered storytelling engine that actually moves the needle. In 2022, his team shifted student content from peer chatter to future-student focus, without handing students a script. The 100-plus Hokie Ambassadors aren’t just tour guides. They’re storytellers, creating thousands of real belonging moments. Authentic voices beat polished campaigns here. The strategy is simple: put students in the room, give them the mic, and let their perspectives steer the story forward.

Higher ed marketing teams are competing in one of the noisiest environments we’ve ever seen, and traditional tactics often get lost in a “sea of sameness.” So Fordham University tried something different. At the NACAC conference, the team transformed a pizza shop across the street into a fully branded Fordham pop-up experience. With New York style pizza, music, and Fordham branding everywhere, the activation drew nearly 1,000 attendees in a single day. In this episode, Allison talks with Justin Bell and Laura Cioffi about how the idea came together, what they learned from launching the pop-up, and why experiential marketing works best when it’s amplified by traditional campaigns.

What happens after a student clicks “Request Information”? For most institutions, that’s where marketing’s job ends. For our guest, that’s where it begins. Devin Purgason, Associate VP of Student Experience at Forsyth Technical Community College, explains how rethinking marketing as service transformed enrollment, strengthened persistence, and improved completion. By merging marketing with student care, restructuring onboarding, and investing in paid student influencers, Devin argues that the goal of marketing isn’t just more leads. It’s better outcomes.

Allison is joined by Laura Rudolph, Founder and CEO of Square One Consulting, and Kristin Nichols, CMO at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, to unpack the “secret language” of higher education. They argue that clarity is not just a best practice, but an act of equity, leveling the playing field for all audiences. From decoding terms like “matriculate” and “bursar” to realizing “graduate” can confuse a high school senior , they show how jargon creates friction and erodes student trust. The conversation explores practical methods, including using AI at a sixth-grade reading level paired with human review, to audit and rewrite communications. They emphasize that small, free changes can lead to huge gains, like the reduction in melt-related phone calls and improved conversion rates.

Allison is joined by Jenny Petty, VP of Industry Relations and Advisory Services at SimpsonScarborough, and Kerri Shook, Owner of ks strategy studio, to discuss rethinking student recruitment and retention by building a fan base. Inspired by Taylor Swift's “Eras” model, UM saw retention climb by 9% since 2018 by focusing on emotional storytelling and experiential branding. They explain how cross-campus collaboration led to new traditions, like the “Freshman Float,” that combat the perception of a lack of campus vibrancy. Are you still trying to out-volume your enrollment problems? More apps, more emails, more FAFSAs? What if the real solution isn’t more noise, but sharper signals? In this episode, Geoff Baird, Founder and CEO of Enroll ML, joins Allison to pull back the curtain on higher ed’s “Category 5 collision” and explains why the old playbook of chasing volume is broken. You’ll hear how application surges can actually hide intent, why the movable middle is where enrollment is won or lost, and how AI is changing the game by revealing hidden behavioral patterns.

Instead of a tech challenge, Winn and Bonilla argue, higher ed institutions are facing a culture challenge that requires a deep mindset shift. If you're exploring how to use AI in higher education to drive better outcomes, this is a must-listen.

Traditional lead generation in higher education isn't working. Universities pour time and money into RFI (Request for Information) forms, yet most enrolled students never even fill one out. So why are we still treating prospective students like sales leads instead of informed decision-makers?
In this episode, Allison is joined by Robert Kadar, a higher ed marketing expert with over 15 years of experience in enrollment and media strategy. Together, they break down why lead generation tactics fall short, what students actually do when researching colleges, and how universities can shift their marketing focus for better results.

For two years, Mickey studied Amazon’s evolving efforts to design and deliver their customer experience, including an extensive review of books, public documentation and prior writings from founder and former CEO, Jeff Bezos, direct interviews with former Amazonians, listening to podcast interviews of current and former Amazon leaders and touring two Amazon facilities. His understanding of their principles and strategies, as well as his experience in higher education give him a unique perspective in what an Amazon-like experience can be in higher education. Outside of work, Mickey is a RV enthusiast, traveling to various destinations around the United States with his family every spring, summer and fall. Last summer, they headed west for a six-week journey to Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada, followed by stops to the Badlands and Glacier National Parks in the United States. This summer, they began a series of treks across the east coast to visit 20 colleges and universities as Mickey’s son begins his college search.

On the final episode of Season 1 of The Application, Safy and I spend this episode doing our favorite thing, talking about content strategy. While we cover many topics, and get a bit distracted at times, we mostly focus on capturing student and brand experiences to create engaging “indirect experiences” via content. In our deep dive into content we also talk about:

I’ve spent the last 9 episodes talking to higher ed professionals across the US about the student experience. From the University of Montana and Arizona State to The Ohio State University and Siena College.
For this episode, I want to take a step back and talk about:

Like many in higher education, Becca wears multiple hats but my favorite part of our episode is all about the multidimensional health and wellness support her office provides students. Becca talks about the data and individuals that came together to make student experiences better through robust mental health and wellness resources and services. One focus was on the financial wellness of students and addressing everything from living and transportation to childcare and food security.

From athletes and pregnant students to addressing sexual assault and dating violence, Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program that receives funding from the federal government. One would assume the importance of Title IX, student conduct processes, and mediation in the student experience would mean every university has someone like Stacey Rose, but that simply isn’t true. Netflix offers 6K+ shows and movies, TikTok has over a billion videos, and the Washington Post publishes over 1,000 stories, videos, and graphics per day. The volume of content is overwhelming which is why personalized discovery through the FYP, Netflix’s suggested shows and the Washington Post’s “what to read next” feature is essential to keep audiences engaged.
Other social giants are catching on, which is why you see “suggested posts” more than ever on Facebook and Instagram and why your Twitter feed is showing Tweets based on topics instead of just from those you follow.
The overwhelm can also be applied to higher ed institutions and their broad range of services, organizations, and other opportunities students can take advantage of and really benefit from. The problem is, how are students supposed to know those things exist?
In this episode, I talk to Cooper Jones, Co-Founder and CEO of RahRah, an app dedicated to ensuring an optimal student experience by showing students what resources, services, and organizations might interest them based on a personalized discovery model.
