Nick: “We were Yin and Yang, we are complete opposites, which I recommend for everybody in the world to find that person who is your opposite, but who you get along with and who you can talk very candidly and directly with.”

Nick: “The problem in cybersecurity, no matter how sophisticated the program is, no matter how much money you spend on the tools, no matter how big you build the team, if you don't get the foundation, which is making sure that the infrastructure on which your business and your application is running, making sure that secure, no matter what you put on top of it, you still got all these attack vectors.”

Nick: “You never gonna get time for all of the problems to be solved. So let's make sure we prioritize it, let's make sure we understand what we're getting for the time we're gonna invest in it.”

“Creating fair opportunities for all in the technology sector” - This is the mission of today’s guest, Sunil Kumar, and his company, TrainYo. Sunil will be joining our very own Edward Purmalis in another episode of The Level Up Show and will talk about all the craziness in the recruitment process of the technology sector, and how he and TrainYo are doing their best to make it fair for everyone.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A personal struggle with hiring biases
  • How TrainYo started
  • School system as “broken”
  • Issues on “cultural fit”

QUOTES

Sunil: “After being an SDR for being an SDR hiring manager. I did notice that there are real inconsistencies with onboarding and with who they hire, real hiring biases presented throughout the industry.”

Sunil: “The people that have to say the most are not the top performers, it's usually the ones that are listening more and more patient on calls, and don't want to say as much and analytical”

Sunil: “In a future state of TrainYo, we'd like to go outside of sales and look at how we educate ourselves to get into the workforce as a general thing by addressing one issue at a time”

Sunil: “Should I have gone to university? No, of course not. Right? It wasn't for me, I wouldn't have learned I would have failed, I would have wasted time. And that's a bad thing. It doesn't mean I'm not employable probably means the opposite. To be honest.”

CAPitalize your time today by tuning in to Edward Purmalis as he talks to Christopher Panagiotu in another exciting episode of The Level Up Show. Chris is a fellow podcaster of “CAPitalize Your Finances” and the founder of CAPitalize Your Finances LLC, a company dedicated to helping people to develop confidence in their financial health.

A financial planner and a lifelong investor, Chris has come a long way from building an amazing financial planning business from $0 to $108 million under his company's oversight. Chris will be sharing with Edward his professional journey and why investing is very important.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Getting into finance
  • Getting into entrepreneurship from a good position
  • Starting CAPitalize Your Finances
  • Investing in people, relationships, and work ethics
  • Helping yourself, to be capable of helping others

QUOTES

Christopher: “The biggest piece of advice I could give is to always be upfront.”

Christopher: “In our industry, there's not a lot of loyalty, I'll be really honest with you. It's a cutthroat industry. It can be ruthless in a bad way. And I saw people take advantage of that Lucia and I just told myself, ``I'm not going to be that person.”

Christopher: “If you do the best work for the people that have already put that trust and faith in you, the rest will follow.”

Edward: “Every day you have a million opportunities to build new relationships, but I can tell you what, if you're going to crash and burn one of them, you will never have an opportunity to remake.”

Christopher: “I would say that I would call a decent amount of the success that capitalizing your finances has had, not to the way that I financially plan for people, but in the way that I help people when no one else helps them, because I didn't have that when I started.”

Christopher: “The best way that you're going to be able to help people reinvest in people is if you first reinvest in yourself.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Elyse’s Sales Journey
  • Developing her own personal brand
  • The Problems Women Face in Sales
  • Co-founding the Brand Builders Group
  • Launching She Sells

QUOTES

Elyse: “There are certain things that are just taught in terms of sales best practices that didn't align with me.”

Elyse: “I remember thinking like, this just doesn't make sense. Because here I am sitting here telling these people that the way to generate revenue for their companies is for them to be online, for them to be generating inbound leads. And yet here I am wanting to generate revenue. And I'm cold calling and saying the script.”

Elyse: “There is a different and better way that we can sell, that not only is more effective by building an online brand and generating inbound leads, but also, you can have a lot of integrity and do the right thing for your customers.”

Edward: “I think personal branding, creating content and being your own. Making your own lead generation tools is the Ultimate Sales and Marketing alignment.”

Edward: “Fear of failure is a real killer, but fear of success is even worse. And that's something that really holds a lot of people back.”

Elyse: “This is the bottom line, your level of income will never exceed your level of self worth. So to me, it's really about going inside and helping someone figure out why you feel like you've got to put on the mask, like what part of you doesn't feel good enough.”

  • From Warehouse Guy to Funniest Lean Guy
  • The Concept of Lean
  • What sucks at work and making it suck less
  • The Birth of “Chasing Excellence”

QUOTES

Jake: “Have you ever seen the Shawshank Redemption? The warehouse did this more than once. At first, the walls are a prison, and then after a while, there's some comfort and security within these walls. Pretty soon you can't live without it, and that's what happened to me.”

Jake: “Its simplest form is to do the most efficient, simplest, most practical way forward, and everything you do.”

Jake: “To advance in the corporate world in pretty much any role, you're going to need some level of social skills.”

Jake: “Just make it suck less. It's not that hard if you actually go and do it. If you do the thing once yourself, it's really easy to see what sucks.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pursuing higher education while working in sales
  • Sales as a solutions engine and not just a product source
  • Impact of working in sales to other businesses
  • The recipe for success in sales

QUOTES

Jim: “My selling style is heavily focused on market knowledge, industry knowledge, trend knowledge, and business effectiveness. So that's part of the reason why I pursued my MBA and then I decided to take it to the next level to add even more credibility into my selling approach.”

Jim: “No salesperson ever has the same day, you're always dealing with different problems. After a period of time, they might look similar, but there's always some nuance in there that you have to figure out, and that keeps things interesting.”

Jim: “I mean, if you care about making an impact, and that's how I'm wired, then why wouldn't you want to be in sales, there's no other place where you can make a better bigger impact than helping another organization drive their revenue, or control their costs, which could be the thing that separates them from being, you know, defunct to being the next unicorn.”

Jim: “Curiosity is there and then discipline around the core critical success factors of sales, which is which you got to prospect, you got to do outreach, you have to build authentic relationships, and you got to make your prospect the star of the show. And you do that over and over again.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Choosing Entrepreneurship over Corporate Work
  • Advantages of a law degree in running a business
  • Effects of recession and other global events
  • The changes in the working environment
  • When college education started to lose value
  • Todd on mindfulness in business and in life

QUOTES

Todd: “I wanted the excitement of starting my first company, and not necessarily getting into the typical doc-review law firm life. And shortly thereafter, I got my results back, passed the bar of California, applied for my real estate license in California and sort of my first company in 2006. And it's been a ride ever since.”

Todd: “I will say there's one thing that I have taken from law school that I've applied to business every single time, and that is that concept of the balance of powers.”

Todd: “There's a spring of optimism, especially in the entrepreneur community. And I think what's so great is that now as entrepreneurs, we used to say ‘ ‘as an entrepreneur, I wanted to start a business because I didn't want somebody yell at me, or I want to be my own boss.’ ’ Now, everyone's starting a business to change the world.”

Edward: “The college experience is not just about the education, but it's more about opportunities, which is ultimately going to be the real key difference maker. And it's also gonna really increase the value in schools that are outside of the Ivy Leagues, and potentially attract a completely new way of looking at modern education.”

Edward: “One thing that you have to understand is that everything around you is trying to distract you. That's just how it's built. It's just how the world is built living in the attention economy, everything is trying to distract you. So it's very important to learn how to get momentum from the get go, and how to not lose it.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Birth of NSENG
  • Job Searching with a Marketing Approach
  • Community Based Approach of Job Search
  • The approach to pivot your career while job searching

QUOTES

Marty: “The people who have the power, and the ability to make decisions are the hiring manager, that person's peers and their superiors. those are the people that you have to get to and that takes marketing.”

Marty: “One of the common denominators that I see now, for people who are working for these amazing hyper growth startups, these people are making well into the six digits a year plus stock options, and God knows what else, they all have a very strong personal brand.”

Marty: “Oftentimes, internships lead to full time jobs, either with that company, or with a competing company. So it's really important to be active when you're in school, separate and apart from what you're doing academically.”

Marty: “I think if the company they're interviewing with doesn't have a social media presence, it may not be a company you want to work for. Now, that would be my first comment. Because it tells me they're behind the times. It tells me it's a company that has never embraced technology.”

  • The struggle of getting stuck and feeling disconnected
  • Building her coaching business
  • Utilizing TikTok as a content strategy
  • Affirmations being a big part of life

QUOTES

Hallie: “This is a generalization. This is a general story that's been told and passed down through the generations, that women need to play small, and not use their big voice and not show up as their most authentic self. Now, to be a good sales person of any gender identification, you have to be confident, you have to be authentically you.”

Hallie: “Do what lights you up, what makes you feel good, and what you can be consistent with, because when you're consistent, that's when you're gonna see success.”

Hallie: “Affirmations are just a story that you're telling yourself. We are all telling ourselves affirmations all the time, even if you're not aware of it. So pause for a minute and think about the stories that you tell yourself in your mind.”

  • Creating good habits and breaking vicious cycles
  • Live everyday because no one is entitled to it

QUOTES

Jordan: "I had been into yoga for a few years. I had been into meditation and mindfulness, and I realized that most of what I needed to learn to be a successful human wasn't ever taught to me in school. And so, that really started me on this journey of deep exploration on my own."

Jordan: "Ideally, we don't have to get to the bottom of our crisis in life but I think most of us have to because that's where we have enough activation energy to say, okay, time to make a change now that it's that bad."

Ed: "It's really not about how many times things go bad, it's how short that pickup period. That's the most important part, because everybody deals with the same BS only in different flavors."

  • Growth with intimidating people and preparing fallback questions
  • Interviewing people with the craziest stories

QUOTES

Reena: "Everybody believes it's who you know, but it's also how hard are you willing to freaking work. I have seen people start off as a secretary, I have seen people start as a production assistant, I've seen people start as a runner that are now executive producing shows today."

Reena: "I've been booking other people guests for years. What better way to show people that you know how to book guests, put together a story, and market it, than do it yourself?"

Reena: "If there's something that speaks to you that you would want to copycat, do your version of it because if it's popular already but you do your version of it, it's still an original because it's you. And that's a great way to start."

Reena: "I think when you interview pros, when you interview people that have been on hundreds of interviews or have been on the air for 27 years, that really pushes you to be thoughtful in your research, be thoughtful in your questions, be thoughtful in your timing, all of those things. • Data shows that most sales professionals use outdated sales strategies
  • Tonality and understanding objections to diffuse them
  • Sales models being taught were created in the pre-Internet era
  • Understand the 4 personality types (peacock, pigeon, eagle, and owl)

QUOTES

Benjamin: "The science is actually showing us now that your pitch can be 5% of the sale, 5% of the entire conversation, if you know how to emotionally engage and connect with people. So one of the big things we wanted to do is actually create this feedback loop."

Benjamin: "Sales gets put in its own bucket because it's something specific, but no one really says it's just a conversation and it's your goal to be a problem finder, because if you don't find the problems, you can never present your solution."

Benjamin: "The secret to dealing with any objections is you've got to clarify, discuss, and then diffuse. Most people go to try to diffuse it straight away, and they're not even solving the right problem."

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Living a double life in sales and having a moral dilemma
  • Success: Control your destiny with true happiness and bring others along
  • Managers manage processes, coaches build up personalities
  • Manage your Hitters: Determine Thoroughbreds and Primadonnas

QUOTES

John: "The things that we go through in the past that maybe we didn't like, we can't just throw away because those things built me to recognize who I am now and what I want out of life now and who I want to be and how I want to be and why I want to be that."

John: "I think the other definition of success is being able to bring people along with you. If you are having some sort of level of success, and success is relative, there's all different levels of it, but if you're having success and you're isolated, then again you're not really fulfilled."

John: "The first thing that you have to do is you have to determine if your Hitter is a Thoroughbred or a Primadonna. If they're a Primadonna, they're probably not very good for the organization. HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scaling businesses globally and getting fired for the first time
  • Entrepreneur journey: A value-added network and difficult conversations
  • Develop and leverage your authentic social soul
  • Gen Z: Learn the lesson that there is no such thing as instant success
  • Joy is not happiness; it’s fulfillment

QUOTES

Rob: "Even though I was successful, that was the lesson learned because it was very much transactional network. It wasn't value added. And so, I had to learn how to really build that. So that was a big takeaway from that. So those are the two things, how to build a value network and how to have hard conversations."

Rob: "The social soul is about mastering your personal and professional brand with intentionality and authenticity. And there's kind of three key goals and one is building a value-added network. How do you do that? Two is how to do that with intentionality. How do you build relationship with intentionality? And three is how to be an engager."

Rob: "We talk about living in alignment, and alignment's great. And we need to live in alignment, but most people who talk about living in alignment are in alignment later in life because they put the hours in early in life."

QUOTES

Larry: "The more you give, the more you help, the more you serve, and you assist people with getting to where they want to get to, overcoming any obstacles, challenges in their way, how it just really comes full circle right back to you."

Larry: "A no just means no for now, or they don't know enough. K N O W. And essentially, the majority of the folks that we worked with at one time or another said, no, just because of the natural inclination."

Larry: "Instead of being positive, productive, boosting myself up, I hold myself back. So I'm still a work in progress. I'm still dealing with it each and every day. It's an everyday battle. But I can tell you what, I'm having a blast, having a ton of fun."

  • Help people to create strategic alliances in business
  • LinkedIn as a prime networking tool
  • Earn the right to have conversations with prospects

QUOTES

Bill: "I think one of the important things about networking is making sure that you're making those strategic alliances with people, not only that can help you, but really even more importantly, who you can help because really it's all about helping other people."

Bill: "Permission-based marketing on LinkedIn works the best because so many people are connecting and pitching and kind of just throwing stuff at people right now it's really harming the platform."

Bill: "What we have to do is we have to earn the right to have conversations with people. We have to earn the right just to have a conversation, then we have to earn the right to have a sales conversation. • Car sales: Attitude, not aptitude, gets you altitude
  • A support system like your spouse is vital for success in sales
  • Leaders must communicate to lead effectively
  • Have a fearless mindset: You have nothing to lose and everything to gain
  • A family crisis makes entrepreneurship inevitable

QUOTES

Daniel: "If it wasn't for the automotive industry, I wouldn't be where I'm at today because it taught me resiliency. It taught me how to not give up. And most people, now that I look back, Edward, even now when I do some of the trainings at some of these automotive dealerships, people quit because they don't want to grow."

Daniel: "People don't really realize also how important sales is in business, sales is as an entrepreneur, and really how attitude is just vitally important. They think it's your aptitude that's going to determine your altitude. And it's not, it's your attitude."

Daniel: "As a sales professional, you're a leader also because you got to lead yourself because, like you said, if you're not self-motivated, you ain't selling crap. Or if you have a sales team, you're a sales manager and you have a bad attitude, you're the one killing your own team."

  • Diving into entrepreneurship: Nickel and diming but no loans
  • Systems and delegation for scalability and creating company culture
  • Creating redundancy and line extensions with products and services
  • Strategy and leverage: Focusing on tasks for the most output
  • Hiring people better than you and setting them up to succeed

QUOTES

12:43 Patrick: "My plan wasn't life's plan because I actually stayed with my grandpa for awhile in Florida then I had to move back home, all while I was trying to build this up because I couldn't keep myself afloat. But I definitely didn't take out any business loans or anything like that because I didn't want more financial liability."

16:21 Patrick: "Systems are huge for scalability. If you don't have systems, you're going to be spinning. It's going to take you a long time just to onboard people, get new deals, and do that. So systems were huge."

19:07 Patrick: "Systems, sales, leadership. I would say those are three elements that I really learned to get where I am."

28:49 Patrick: "You've got to be humble. As a leader, you've got to pick people that are smarter than you, better than you in certain ways, and be comfortable with that and set them up to succeed."

2:12 “The only conclusion we could draw was how hard I was working, constantly grinding around the clock, consuming caffeine at all hours to keep pushing through.

That was a wake up call and certainly changed my outlook on life and work. And I’ve really started to prioritize my health and, ironically, have closed more deals, bigger deals, instead of working the old way which is hustling.”

6:06 "In sales... We don’t have an agent getting us the best contract, we don’t have a sports psychologist helping us work on the mental side of the game, and so what we default back to are simply archaic ways of not just selling, but ways of working."

7:16 "Through the pandemic, when I went back to that year of almost being in Europe again with a consistent schedule, going to bed at the same time, managing the holistic view of myself as an individual, I made myself better as a human being and, by default, I had better sales outcomes."

14:49 "When I shifted from extrinsic values—needing to be on the leaderboard, needing to make President's Club every year, having that attachment and that desire—letting that go, and having myself be guided by intrinsic value...

You’ve gotta find more meaning and your “why” in what you do so you can stick with it and continue to grow.”

20:41 “Stop multitasking and focus on concentrated, high cognitive effort to accomplish big things in life, so I started measuring how much deep work I’m doing.”

31:40 "Imagine bringing that into today's business environment. We create a new way of operating in one company that could be open source and then, through smart contracts, it could be iterated upon and everybody participates in growing it and benefiting from what that produces."

5:20 (In the USSR) they didn't care what was sold, they just got in line. The stores had 2, 3 items. Unfortunately, during that time, they did a survey of high school girls, and 70% of them wanted to be foreign currency prostitutes. But there was hope in the streets.

8:38 Trust your gut, and allow yourself to respond to the opportunities… if you're in this framework that you're gonna do this and this only, there are things right in front of you that you won't see, that's been kinda the mantra to my life”

10:32 I never had this “America is the only place on earth” kind of philosophy, every place I went to I gave some of my value, but I also got a lot back.

14:19 I can be a six-sigma organisation, I can have scrum masters, I can have all the bells and whistles but at the end of the day, if I'm not living the philosophy of “what am I getting out of this process or this data”, the data and the process are not the solutions. They're vehicles to get to solutions, but not the actual solutions themselves

23:28 “and I'm always asking for feedback and checking in to make sure that I'm delivering.. ..if I'm missing something, I'm not gonna see it sometimes. Sometimes I see it and think “ that was not a good move Rosenberg”

QUOTES

10:30 "Something I attribute my sales career to is I learned growing up how to talk to the people who had the money. And then, as I got older, I was thrust into this different environment where I had to learn when to shut my mouth."

14:23 "The number one thing that I learned there was one is managing expectations. Always underpromise and overdeliver."

22:22 "Now the real way to make cold Facetiming work, you know the old thing in sales where it's if they don't answer the first time, try one more dial? Double tap. Make the second end of the double tap a Facetime."

31:56 "First bottleneck is onboardings with a lot of them. Without Hubspot, there's a 2500 for just a Sales Hub... with everything, there's an onboarding. So if you're a solopreneur, if you're a founder, if you're a salesperson, you just don't have all the capital in the world. You need to bootstrap your way there."

32:19 "The second bottleneck is okay, we've got the software, do you know how to use it? How do we use this software with this one? Do you know how to integrate them together and get the right workflow that you want going? And do you know how to write messaging that's not going to fall flat on its ass?"

QUOTES

17:51 "I'm a believer that you never apply for a job. You want to network to someone and cut the line so you get to the front. It's kind of like in a nightclub... there's a side door and there's a back door and you want to find ways to cut the line and get into the club."

19:25 "If you have the habit of applying for a job through an ATS and you're going to attach a document as a cover letter with the upload, don't. Make it page one of the resume. And what that does is, if you follow my model for it, it works beautifully because page one becomes all the keywords of the job."

25:10 "If you've got an HR recruiter at a company, they're getting hundreds of resumes that never stop. They just keep coming in all the time. And we have an opportunity to make the fit obvious for them. They breathe a sigh of relief and know that they should call you."

26:45 "You think of each of these sections of the resume, these sentences in a resume is like objects that can be added or deleted as you need them. So the master resume is always adapted to something particular for the role."

Well then maybe that's your audience ... we just have to keep doing what we've always been doing is to be strategically focused."

27:32 "Technology needs to control technology rather than waiting on a data privacy law or something. Because I don't think regulation is coming. The only people who really get what's going is not politicians. It's the people in Miami and Silicon Valley who are doing the work and who understand the technology."

33:01 "I think that businesses really need to think about their slimy mess. And this would come down more to the marketing team in Facebook that I would argue is examine what is the negative press out there and how do you change it? Like, listen to your customers."

34:16 "Moving into the social media space and becoming part of somebody's rotation is practically an impossible task given also how monopolized the market is. Facebook and Instagram are the two biggest social media companies and they're both owned by Meta."

QUOTES

08:17 "Sometimes the want and the need is stronger than whatever is dragging you down."

10:24 "The computer screen and the headset is kind of the great equalizer. You're not judged by your looks or your behaviours. You're judged by what's going on in your head. If you're able to hold a conversation, be funny, those were all the things that I was good at ... as a kid."

12:11 "I've always been a guy who's had to pretty much forcefully learn how to work with yourself, how to develop yourself, how to find toxic behaviours and how to fix them. I became a pretty big psychology nut at a very young age ... so I kind of learned how to fix myself in the direction where I wanted to go."

14:33 "So when you're living that kind of lifestyle, you're grinding hard at a sales job. You're partying on the weekends. You're really not giving yourself time to emotionally mature."

17:48 "It took me a long time to really realize and identify my own toxic behaviours to the point where I can talk about them in a past sense, right? Because if you realize that you're doing things wrong, but you keep doing them. You're not gonna talk about it ever. You're just gonna keep it to yourself."
