In this episode of Thrive In Design, host Nicole Lashae Hall breaks down a critical misconception holding interior product brands back: confusing a product launch with a true go-to-market strategy. While many brands excel at creating beautiful, innovative products, far fewer understand how to effectively commercialize them for long-term specification success.

Nicole introduces a practical five-step framework that guides brands from market clarity to conversion, ensuring momentum doesn’t drop off after the initial reveal. They also dive into practical tactics for product brands, including how to prepare for trade shows, why paid media is still underutilized in the AEC industry, and how manufacturers can structure their messaging and content so that AI tools and designers can easily evaluate their products.

If you're an interior product manufacturer, marketer, or sales leader looking to grow specifications and build stronger brand authority, this episode is packed with insights you can apply immediately.

Many interior product brands believe they have a visibility problem. But according to Nicole Lashae Hall, the real issue is something deeper: a strategy gap.

In this episode of the Thrive and Design Podcast, Nicole explores how the design industry has quietly but permanently shifted — and why many brands are still operating with outdated sales and marketing assumptions. Designers are discovering products digitally, forming opinions long before meeting a sales rep, and increasingly prioritizing brands that provide education, transparency, and meaningful narratives rather than pure product promotion.

Nicole breaks down how the pandemic accelerated these changes and why hybrid work, digital-first discovery, and generational shifts (especially among Millennial and Gen Z designers) are reshaping how specification decisions happen. Brands that rely only on product visibility, trade shows, or sales-driven messaging risk becoming invisible in a crowded marketplace.

Instead, success now requires alignment between marketing, storytelling, and sales behavior. Nicole shares the most common strategic exposures she sees in interior product brands today — including visibility without positioning, sales messaging without narrative, and activity without clear strategy.

If your brand is investing heavily in marketing but still struggling to win specifications, this episode will help you rethink your approach and build a clearer path forward.

Timestamps00:00 – Welcome to Thrive and Design
Nicole introduces the podcast and the mission: helping interior product brands turn insights into strategic action.

01:14 – The Strategy Gap Most Brands Don’t See
Why many brands think they need more visibility when the real issue is strategic positioning.

02:25 – How Product Sourcing Has Changed Post-Pandemic
The shift from traditional in-person sales toward digital discovery and hybrid engagement.

05:18 – The Rise of Digital-First Product Discovery
Designers now research brands online before ever meeting a rep.

07:25 – What Research Shows About Designer Decision-Making
Designers rely more on peer recommendations, digital platforms, and educational content.

10:33 – What Millennial and Gen Z Designers Value Most
Sustainability, brand alignment, and clear narratives now influence specification decisions.

12:47 – Why Education Beats Product Promotion
Brands that provide tools, insights, and learning opportunities build stronger relationships.

15:10 – What Hasn’t Changed (But Should)
Trade show spending, undertrained sales reps, and disconnected marketing and sales teams.

18:20 – The Three Biggest Brand Exposures Today
Visibility without direction, sales without story, and tactics without strategy.

21:00 – How Brands Can Shift Their Strategy
Move from exposure to positioning, from silos to alignment, and from tactics to foresight.

23:20 – Turning Insights Into Action
Why brands that win specifications operate from a clear strategic roadmap.

Key Quotes* “Most product brands think they have a visibility problem. What they actually have is a strategy gap.” * “Designers expect brands to educate, not just sell.” * “Exposure without a narrative creates awareness, but not loyalty.” * “If your growth strategy assumes designers will figure out why you matter, you’re already behind.” * “The future of design doesn’t reward the loudest brands. It rewards the clearest ones.”

In order for your interior product brand to achieve success, there needs to be five main areas of focus. These areas, known as touchpoints, include your showroom, firm library presence, events, product presentation, and the role of your sales representatives. People remember how you made them feel, not just what you sold. This means they will remember your brand beyond the transaction. However, a brand is not just a logo or website color. It is the emotional experience people have with your business. But how do you create a memorable experience? How do you make clients feel the emotions and choose your brand repeatedly? To do this, you must consider storytelling and shift from a business mindset to a brand mentality.

Waterfront infrastructure refers to the systems and structures built along the edges of bodies of water to serve various purposes, such as transportation, recreation, flood protection, habitat restoration, and economic development. Despite the significant opportunities, waterfront infrastructures are not immune to a unique set of challenges. Architects and designers must consider resiliency and sustainability.

Waterfront areas are vulnerable to flooding, erosion, and other natural hazards. Architects and designers need to employ materials and construction methods that can withstand these challenges. In this episode, we are joined by Dena Prastos, a visionary professional with expertise in waterfront architecture, civil engineering, futurism, climate adaptation, entrepreneurship, and innovative thinking. As the founder and CEO of Indigo River, a pioneering transdisciplinary design firm led by women, she spearheads progressive initiatives in waterfront architecture, resilience, and climate adaptation. In this episode, Melissa Marsh shares more about AI, its intersection with real estate and interior design, and how they leverage it in their processes with clients. Melissa's pioneering work underscores the potential of AI, where data-driven insights guide decisions in crafting spaces that respond to aesthetic considerations and align with the needs and behaviors of the occupants.

Melissa is the founder and executive director of PLASTARC, a social research workplace innovation in real estate strategy consultancy. Her work leverages the tools of social science and business strategy to help organizations make more data-driven and people-centric real estate decisions. Melissa combines quantitative and qualitative social science research with architecture expertise and is dedicated to shifting the metrics associated with the workplace from sq ft and inches to occupancy satisfaction and performance. This holistic approach enables PLASTARC to recommend evidence-based interventions that make the built environment more people-centric and responsive, promoting individual wellness and business success.

If you haven’t listened to the last few episodes, we’ve been talking about all things social selling and how you can leverage it as an interior product company. We also discussed specific social selling campaigns that led to a few successes. Today’s episode is about digital experiences and the touch points to focus on to keep designers engaged on their journey with your brand. We discuss everything from coming to the trade show booth, touching the fabric, leaving with the fabric, and going on their merry way.

One of the major concerns regarding social selling is designers rejecting digital experiences or their initial thoughts of digital experiences: ZOOM MEETINGS. So, if designers are “zoomed out,” is there any other strategy that you can use? Recently, Nicole, CEO of Thrive In Design, talked with a few designers who had these sentiments and came up with strategies to help you with social selling, digital-physical experiences, and engaging people in a unique and innovative way.

Join this conversation with your host, Nicole, as she shares three things you should focus on to integrate digital experiences with your designers to level up your social selling, social engagements, and customer journey in a 360 perspective. Learn how to leverage the tools out there and those yet to exist to stand out and engage designers before they come to your trading show booth, while they are there, and even after.

[22:29] Episode wrap-up and calls to action

Notable Quotes: * “Messaging provides the words that help customers and prospects understand a firm's value (why it's useful) and values (what it believes in).” LEE FREDERIKSEN, PH.D. (blog: Hinge Marketing) * Get clear on your messaging and how you are delivering it through different touch points with designers. * Whether you're doing social selling or any other sales strategies, if the messaging is not clear, it will not be effective. * Go against the grain and just do something different: Think outside the box, test out a new idea, see how it aligns with designers, then tweak and go from there. * In real life experiences are here to stay, but it is time to shake things a bit; it is time to innovate in a way that stands out.

Social selling is becoming an essential tool for sales and marketing professionals in the product industry. By understanding the fundamentals of social selling, sales professionals have access to a powerful resource that can help them reach potential customers on multiple platforms and nurture long-term customer loyalty.

Social selling is using a brand’s social media channel(s) to connect with prospects, develop and build connections, and build a pipeline of leads. This tactic can help businesses reach their sales targets. However, social selling is different from social media marketing and social media advertising. Social media marketing is the use of social media to sell or promote a brand, service or product. Social media advertising, on the other hand, is paid digital advertising.

Join this conversation with Nicole as we talk about how interior design product companies can start or continue to embrace the new normal through social selling. We will talk about what it is, why it is beneficial, and a few practical steps you can start to implement social selling into your sales strategy.

Every interior product company wants to thrive and make more impact in the world. But, what does it mean to thrive? According to the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, “thrive” has three definitions. These are; to grow vigorously (flourish), to gain in wealth or possessions (prosper), and to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances. In this episode, Nicole Lashae Ben, CEO of Thrive In Design, and Bob Habian, Co-founder and CEO of Tect App, Inc., chat about how relationships play a significant role in the design process.

Architects and interior designers have complex design processes, which require specifying hundreds of materials. Those materials have technical information and nuances that, typically, only the product manufacturer and its sales reps are well versed in. When there is a solid and fruitful relationship between the architect/designer and manufacturer, commuication is essential and leads to great product decisions.

Bob Habian, AIA, today's guest, is an architect and entrepreneur, who is often referred to as a "licensed puzzle builder and problem solver." He has dedicated the majority of his career to solving one of the most important challenges facing the building industry, and that is, communication between product manufacturers and design professionals, particularly at the earliest stages of a project, when important product decisions are being made.

Listen in for some great insights on how Bob approaches this problem with Tect App, Inc. and how product manufacturers can position themselves to be a resource rather than just aiming to make a sale.

In this episode, Nicole Lashae Ben, CEO of Thrive In Design, and Jessica Mann-Amato, Design Principal and Co-Owner of Mancini Duffy, chat about integrating tech into the interior design process and client experience.

Jessica leads Mancini Duffy through transparency emphasizing company culture and technology. Mancini is a 100+-year-old tech-driven design firm in NYC whose clients include Peloton, Soho House, Boqueria, American Airlines, Brooklyn Nets, and NBC Sports. Mancini’s co-owners run the firm like a start-up with technology as the key driver of all initiatives. Mancini is a diverse firm — 51% of the firm is female — nearly twice the industry norm.

In 2020, Mancini’s designers revolutionized the design process by inventing the patent-pending The Toolbelt, a software that allows Mancini’s clients to explore and manipulate the 3D models of their spaces using Virtual Reality to explore and make adjustments to the designs in real-time. Utilizing The Toolbelt, Mancini’s designers can do in 3 hours what it takes most architects 3 weeks to do. Jessica has layered technology into every facet of Mancini’s design process. She utilizes The Toolbelt to lead clients through proprietary 360 Design Sessions, immersing them in their spaces and allowing for a truly collaborative, interactive design process.

Listen in for some amazing insight on technology, innovation, and how interior product companies can integrate into the emerging design process.
