Welcome to Pursuing Life, a podcast of the Tempe Church and Oasis Campus Ministry in the beautiful desert of Tempe, Arizona.
This podcast is for everyone who is curious about or seeking an intimate and transformative relationship with God. We invite you to take every conversation and tool as an invitation to find encouragement and partnership as we pursue life with God together.
Each month, we engage in a different spiritual practice as a part of our community rhythms. These spiritual practices are an invitation to deepen our life with God and to share our journeys with one another. The first Sunday of the month features a message focused on our spiritual practice.
In March, we are exploring the practice of submission.
We invite you to a conversation with Claire Allensworth about this practice and to consider how you can use it as a tool to deepen your own life with God.

When God hears God responds…
On Sunday, we are exploring the heart of our faith in a new series called First Things First.
Our key passage from scripture is from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 that begins with the word translated as “hear.” One of the first names that is given to God is “The God who Hears.” It was given by two women who cried out to God and they were met by God’s attentive ear and God’s care for them.
This word implies attentive and responsive listening. God does not just hear us, God listens and responds with the wisdom of a loving parent.
Cry out, speak up, shout, whisper, invite God today to listen to your heart.

Join us as we close our day by focusing our attention on first things first. This short guided prayer prompts us to recite Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and the words of Jesus to "love your neighbor as yourself." There are no commandments greater than these and we pray that God will grant us greater insight from the previous day by reflecting on these verses.

We began the new year by turning our attention to first things first. C.S. Lewis wrote in a letter in 1951 “Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: put second things first & we lose both first and second things.”
Jesus modeled this principle by directing our attention again and again to the heart of God’s vision for us - “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment…”
How can we turn our attention to first things first and not become distracted or entangled by things of secondary importance?

It is December 1st. It is the Christmas season. Advent, the time of arrival, is upon us. It is now socially acceptable to blast Christmas music and “deck the halls” to your heart’s content. Each week, I will invite us to linger with one aspect of the story and how it allows us to consider the answers to two questions. The first is what can we discover about God through this story? The second, what do we learn about ourselves, about humanity through this story? Because at its center, the Christmas story is a meeting of these two natures and the discovery that they can be intertwined, indistinguishable from one another, so great is the intimacy between God and us.
Today, I ask us to consider these questions through Elizabeth and her role in the story.
