High Tide Low Tide: Recent Episodes

Leesa Scanlan

Host Leesa Scanlan and her guests talk about all things mental health.

In Australia, one in five people have a diagnosed mental health condition and nine Australians die from suicide every single day.

Having been diagnosed with depression and anxiety over 16 years ago Leesa truly understands the power there is in being able to share your story, not only for the person themselves but for every single person listening and relating to parts of it.

This podcast is for the one person who needs to hear it today.

Hey friends and welcome to episode #41. In this weeks episode I share my fertility journey and experience with my first egg retrieval. (Part 2 coming).

I have always wanted a family of my own and just figured that it would happen "when the time was right". After moving home from Indonesia in 2020 at the age of 32 and parting ways with my long term partner, I decided to find out where I was in relation to my fertility health. When my AMH results came back as 'low' I realised I was going to need to make a decision.

It is a simple fact that as women age we have less eggs and the quality starts to drop, which could make falling pregnant more difficult. I made the choice to move forward with an egg retrieval so that I could freeze my eggs as a bit of "peace of mind" after debating the topic in my head for months. Do I spend the money? Do I put my body through that? What if I don't need them? WHAT IF I DO?!

I talk through how I got to this point, withdrawing money from my superannuation account to pay for it, the different hormones and what the injection process was like and allllll of the feels that came after the retrieval itself.

This is a raw and emotional share. I am and will eternally be grateful to every single person who reached out to me as I documented this on my instagram account. To every person who checked i, who offered tips, who shared their own experiences; there will never be enough words to say how thankful I am for making this solo process a little less lonely.

Hey friends and welcome to episode #40. In this weeks episode I chat with the infectious Rebekah King. Rebekah is more than just an anxiety and mind shift coach; She is the anxiety coach and co-creator of Moonbeam Monday

Five years ago, she could barely get out of bed. Her stomach was in constant knots; she felt sick at the thought of going to work, and felt fearful at the mere thought of her future. After being introduced to Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) she learned how to retrain her brain from destructive thoughts and erase her old obsessive-compulsive negative thought patterns. Having studied NLP myself, I can vouch for how powerful these methods are and how quickly they can help turn your life around.

The energy in this episode is beautiful, I got very energised and re-inspired and had an ah-ha moment in realising how much NLP had had a positive effect on my life over the last few years.

You can work with Rebekah in many different ways and can find more information on Instagram at @moonbeammonday or https://www.moonbeammonday.com.au/

Hey friends and welcome to episode #38. In this weeks episode I chat with the wonderful Mark Koen. Mark is a youth worker and a member of a school wellbeing team and also runs 'Restored Connection' which supports families to stay connected through that teenage journey.

Whilst we do discuss Marks own mental health journey our conversation is mostly centred around the importance connection. We discuss purpose and how we can all wear many hats and he has some great suggestions on where and how to find a community no matter where you live.

This conversation was absolutely cup filling! Another great example of a guest arriving as a stranger and leaving as a guest. I am truly blessed to be producing this podcast and I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Hey friends and welcome to episode #37. In this weeks episode I chat with fellow podcast producer of the 'Could it Bii' Podcast, HR data specialist, dog mum and backup singer Bianca.

We talk through Bianca's decision to get breast implants initially after coming into her teenage years and not developing the way she had assumed she would. She then went on to develop a host of different, somewhat specific but not always connected symptoms which prompted her to do some digging. We talk through her journey to explant and how she is doing now.

Although BII is not a recognised diagnosable condition there is plenty of information available online and support groups to connect in on.

Today's episode is a little life update so you can get up to date with everything that has been going on in my world and why I disappeared.

I also discuss the waves I have been riding since show day as I only ever want to be authentic about how I am doing with my own mental health.

Rounding out the ep I discus the start of my journey in collecting and freezing my eggs. A topic I am happy to be creating conversation around.

Hey friends and welcome to episode #33. In this weeks episode you will meet the wonderful Kym Inglis. In January 2010 Kyms life changed forever when he tragically lost his wife, two daughters and a close family friend in a car crash.

Most of us can never even begin to imagine what he has experienced. He talks us through that day, from that feeling of just knowing something was wrong in his stomach to being delivered the worst news imaginable all in such a short space of time. He tells us what those weeks and months were like afterwards and how turning to running, helped to save his own life.

Kym now shares his story with others and hopes to encourage others to seek help when times get tough. I once again, feel blessed to have met such an incredible guest and I know you will take something from listening in to this.

Guyyys it has been a hot minute! After a small break I am back with a solo episode today chatting about everything that has been happening in my life recently.

I felt really called to do an episode centred around LONELINESS as it has been a reoccurring theme for me as late. Alone and lonely are two very different things, in this episode I talk through the differences I found after moving back from Indonesia, the stories I created around it and why I always see a black Rav4 everywhere I go.

I chat about dating apps and why I think they're not the answer for me and strap in for a Dear Diary story time after I met Casper the friendly ghost. haha. FML. As always I will share with you my learnings and why I am grateful for the experience even though it left me with cartoon question marks floating around my head.

If this episode speaks to you check out Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett Episode #237 with Chris Williamson, I listened to it twice BACK TO BACK.

Welcome to episode #31 friends and I am pleased to introduce to you Alex Ferguson. Alex stumbled across my podcast a few months ago and reached out and offered to share his story with all of you.

After noticing a lump behind his collarbone when getting out of the shower in October 2019 through to his diagnosis with Hodgkin's Lymphoma several months later he talks us through every aspect of his cancer journey.

In the lead up to recording this episode Alex shared his journals that he kept over this time with me and I have to say what truly stood out to me was the positive mindset he was able to adopt.

Listen in to hear what helped him get through those hard days and the things he continues to do now to stay on top of his mental health.

Hi Friends! I am so happy to introduce to you Matt Newlands, this weeks wonderful guest! Matt and I crossed paths on LinkedIn and I am incredibly pleased to be able to bring you HIS story. In 2015, after 10 years as a Police Officer with SA Police he was diagnosed with severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression. He was battling constant suicidal thoughts and was engaging in extreme risk-taking behaviour. This behaviour led to his arrest at work, the termination of his employment and a criminal conviction. Obviously this was very difficult to deal with especially as his job had become such an integral part of his identity.Matt candidly talks to me about two seperate occasions on which suicide was very much an option for him. We also discuss his worries about keeping his diagnosis secret from work and why he sought help externally. This type of open conversation is so important and I am eternally grateful for his vulnerability. Having been through so much it is incredible to see all that he is doing now to be of service to others. He is a registered councillor, delivers workshops with MESHA, does consulting with men's mental health organisation The Male Hug, is a national community ambassador for RUOK? and was appointed a position on the state government's suicide prevention council representing first responders. We literally could have talked about mental health all night, I know you'll love this episode as much as I do! Hit me up in the DM's and let me know what you think! You can find Matt at @matty.newlands on instagram or at https://mattnewlands.com.au/LINKShttps://themalehug.com.au/https://www.ruok.org.au/https://www.instagram.com/aussie_frontline/https://mesha.org.au/https://www.beyondblue.org.au/media/media-releases/media-releases/landmark-survey-of-mental-health-in-police-and-emergency-serviceshttps://www.beyondblue.org.au/docs/default-source/resources/bl1874-pes-exec-summary-final_web.pdfhttps://www.amazon.com/You-Owe-Ignite-Power-Purpose/dp/0593234987Thank you for taking the time to listen, I am SO glad that you are here with me today!Find ME on instagram at either @hightidelowtideau or @a_girl_and_the_oceanPlease note that in these episodes we will discuss mental health and all that it entails. In this weeks episode I am joined by the delightful Abigail Cook. Abbey and I became friends through a local gym class and I am so grateful to have her join me on this episode.

She opens up and talks us through her experience with postpartum anxiety and depression. A topic that is so so important and not spoken about enough. With around 14% of Australia women experiencing PND (1 in 7) it is more common than you may think.

We talk about how and where it started and what it looked like for her. With fear being a reoccurring theme, I just know there are many mothers (and fathers) out there who are going to resonate with her story. With so many things changing, pressure to do or be a certain type of 'mum' and the stress of keeping a new born healthy and alive it is no wonder many new parents have a difficult time. Listen in to hear why she feels that everyone going through this journey should have access to a therapist and what may have helped her looking back

There is something in here for everyone to walk away with.

You can find Abigail at @abigail.g.cook on instagram

I have been very lucky this year to have met some absolutely wonderful men and this weeks guest is one of them. Please meet Nick Braiotta. Breathwork coach, nature lover and yogi.

I made a day out of going to visit Nick and to start our time together he guided me through a 60 minute 1 on 1 breathwork session, listen in to hear ALL ABOUT IT! It was honestly such an incredible experience and I cannot wait to do it again.

We talk through his experiences growing up, putting on a mask and pretending to be someone he was not from a young age just to fit in. He has now taken the very tools that helped him heal and is sharing that with others. It was such a pleasure to share time with Nick, talking through some really important things.

You can find Nick at @nickbraiotta on instagram, I HIGHLY recommend hitting him up for a 1 on 1 session, it was incredibly powerful.

Today's episode is high energy so strap in to meet the wonderful Cecilia Ronson! 22 year old, standup comedian, poet, story teller and all round LEGEND.

Join us as she takes us through her journey which started when she was around 12. She was an anxious child who was terrified of letting people down, especially the adults in her life. We discuss her panic attacks and rejection sensitivity dysphoria which is something I found very interesting when I heard about it from her for the first time mid last year.

We also talk about her germophobia, another topic I find super interesting, as I had never talked about this with anyone before. She sheds a light on what it can be like for someone who is living with this intense phobia.

I was lucky enough to work alongside Cecilia as a part of our Womens Wisdom and Wellbeing events with Breakthrough Foundation, visiting regional areas of South Australia, and I just KNOW you're going to love her as much as I do. It is great to chat about mental health with someone of a different age group and see that change is coming!

You can find Cecilia at @cecilia_ronson @mixedbagpoetry or @poetrywithpurpose on instagram.

Today you will meet the wonderful Stefan Supic. He is a 24 year old physiotherapist and mindset coach living here in Adelaide

While we do discuss a little around his own personal story this episode is very much a chat between two new friends around mindset.

We discuss what exactly is 'mindset', the challenges he sees his clients come up against, how he is able to integrate this type of coaching within the athletic space and how you can make some small changes to help to improve your own mindset.

Today you will meet the lovely Sammy Roccisano (and hear me fumble on her surname 2 seconds in lol). She is sunshine in human form and from meeting her you would never have imagined that, not so long ago, she was at a point in her life that saw her have to live back with her parents as she was unable to take care of herself. 2020 saw Sammy working hard in a job that she loved, planning a wedding (and dealing with covid postponements) and renovating a house. With no appetite and close to no sleep she was diagnosed with burn out in May 2021,

Being "burnt out" is a term that many of us throw around with nonchalance but burn out is a very real psychological syndrome that emerges as a prolonged response to chronic stress on the job. Interestingly, a new report found that 62 per cent of Australian employees were experiencing burnout, compared with a global average of 48 per cent.

Prior to meeting Sammy and recording this ep, I didn't really think of burn out in this light and am hoping that you too may learn a little bit more about it. Take her advice and be mindful of your symptoms and reach out for help when you need it. You don't have to go through these things on your own. Furthermore, keep watch on your work mates!

Please enjoy this one! Be sure to look up her business page because as we discussed a small portion of her profits go towards Breakthrough Foundation!

You can find Sammy at @sammy.roccisano or @thepeacefulnook on instagram.

Welcome to 2023 friends! My first episode of the year is everything that you have been waiting for and more.

Please meet the wonderful Cain Dover, my guest in todays episode. This is my longest one yet and absolutely packed full of interesting chat. We are talking PLANT MEDICINE. I must admit that prior to talking with Cain I knew very little about plant medicine and assumed everyone who went off to the jungle to experience Ayahuasca were just chasing a high and mad hallucinations. Listen in to Cain tell his journey of how losing the life he had been building for himself in the US, losing his relationship and then losing his father in the same week brought him to a path of healing.

Topics in this episode include; Ayahuasca, Huachuma, Ancestral healing, Masculine vs Feminine energies, Trauma healing and Cold water therapy. Yep, strap in.

This is going to absolutely blow your minds. I don't want to give away too much in the write up so instead a urge you to simply PRESS PLAY then come back afterwards for all of the links.

Please note that HTLT is not encouraging the use of 'drugs', but simply bringing you one mans story of his personal experiences. Take from it what you need xx

Alrighty welcome to episode 23 lovely people, join me on a Saturday night on the couch for some chats about what has been happening in my life of late! I am BACK in my 'studio' so audio is on point and my voice is no longer nasal AF.

In today's episode I talk abut just how quickly i returned to my hectic, busy, stressed out self after coming back from 3 weeks of holidays and how I was able to realise it and be like firstly, what the heck! and secondly, whyyyy am I like this??

Side note- I haven't figured that out yet and am welcoming (kind) suggestions lol.

I then give you a bit of an insight to how my 1:1 session with the wonderful Georgia Simecek went last week. honestly wow. It was my first time doing any inner child work and my mind was blown.

Yes, i saw myself clear as day as a 7 year old (check out my IG post to meet her too).

Yes, i was able to take myself back to an exact time my needs weren't met.

Yes, I discovered things about myself.

and YES, I did cry through the entire thing.

Powerful AF. look her up. The amount of growth I had in one session was incredible.

Lastly the main reason for my recording this episode. Men's mental health.

On the back of Movember just finishing up I just wanted to share some statistics that I found online which genuinely made my jaw drop. I have felt called to bring awareness to mens mental health for some time now. This topic is a heavy one but the only way we are going to make any changes is by creating conversation, breaking down those stigmas and helping the men in our lives to know that there is help and that we will be there for them and walk alongside them to get it.

Listen in and let me know how this episode made you feel. Let me know if you reached out to someone afterwards. We are all in this together.

Find embodiment coach Georgia Simecek at @georgiasimecek on IG for more details on how to work with her 1 :1 or join in on one of her courses.

Welcome to Episode 22, the second one I recorded on my recent trip to Indonesia.

In this weeks episode you get to meet my very lovely friend V- AKA Veronika.

Like so many of us, she arrived to Gili Trawangan for a short holiday, to do a course and then never left! haha.

BE AWARE- if you visit this small little island you may just get stuck. It is the Indo version of Never Never Land lol.

In this episode V talks us through how even though she would describe herself as having had an 'Astrid Lindgren type childhood' things were not always rainbows and unicorns. Things took a turn for the worst in her teens which saw her attempt to take her own life. She talks to us about what it was like and how the attitude was at the time in Germany around mental health.

V learnt over the years how to somewhat manage her own emotions and would allow herself to feel into negative emotions for a few days and then pull herself out of it.

She describes the last 4 years as the happiest yet the hardest of her life. Considering she was dealing with a divorce, moving across the world, experiencing a large earthquake and navigating a pandemic, this comes as no surprise.

We talk through the people who were influential in her mental health journey and the things she does now to look after herself. She describes why she has such a love for freediving and how it specifically helps to keep her mental health in check. I feel honoured to have held space for V to tell her story and know that you will get a lot from it.

Apologies for nasal voice in this ep and for the background noise as we were recording in a classroom not a kitchen studion haha.

You can find Veronika at @veronikafreediver on instagram, alternatively hit up @freedivegili and let them know I sent you.

Welcome to Episode 21! Recorded in the beautiful Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. Yes that is right, HTLT goes GLOBAAAAAL.

In this weeks episode you get to meet my very close friend Kazi (Laura Kazimierska) -even after all this time I still have to double check I have spelled her surname correctly lol. Kazi and I met living in the stunning Gili Islands and have been best of best friends ever since. She is a passionate ocean advocate, scuba diver and PADI course director. AKA PADI-mierska.

This episode is a little unique as Kazi has a Polish heritage so it makes for a very interesting conversation around how the trauma related to the war and the communist society truly affected her family and also herself growing up. This is something I have not come across with my prior guests.

We talk through many different things in this episode. Including how growing up with a strong emphasis placed on having to be very strong women and not rely on men impacted her relationships, how searching for acceptance and validation in her teens/early twenties meant she accepted sub-par behaviours and the things she did in turn to punish herself.

She tells us about how a family friend recognised that she needed some help and a really cool approach to healing family trauma called 'constellation therapy' which I had personally not heard of before! Hear also why scuba diving is good for her/your mental health.

This was so much fun to record, enjoy listening in to me and my BFF having a chat lol.

You can find Kazi at @laura_kazi_diving or https://www.divemastergilis.com/ Alternatively hit up @trawangandive and let them know I sent you.

Welcome to EPISODE TWENTY! yes, twenty in words not numbers because I am freaking proud of myself for getting here.

In this weeks episode we meet the delightful Stephanie. Stephanie is a clinical naturopath, herbalist and yoga teacher.

We go back to her childhood and talk through her being an emotionally sensitive person and taking on the energies of those around her and how this affected her growing up.

At 16 she started looking for connection within friendship groups which lead her to start recreationally using party drugs. Surrounded by people who normalised this, she began using marijuana to bring her down after a big night out. Slowly over time this progressed to daily use of marijuana and to the point where she was using all of the time. When this started to make her anxiety worse, she realised something she had to change. With the help of some important people around her she decided that it would be no more and took steps to turn this habit around.

Stephanie has some beautiful advise in this episode and is such a calm, loving energy to listen in to.

Oh my god guys, Welcome to the episode where I met my new BFF lol.

You can feel the energy in this episode from the very start!

Let me introduce to you the wonderful Jess Gray, Jess is the owner and mastermind behind 'Be the light'

What is 'Be the light' you ask... It’s all about spreading more love & kindness in this big wide world. Be the Light was inspired by a previous project called “ Light Up the World”. It all began after Jess's first trip to Africa several years ago, where the locals actually lit up her heart & filled her with gratitude. The people here don't get to choose what situation they were born into, yet their smiles were so genuine.

Listen in to hear what Jess did next and how that lead her to where she is now, running Be the light full time with a beautiful studio in Port Adelaide.

This plant in a light bulb has been created to allow others to spread more light into this world & bring more awareness to gratitude & what a simple act of kindness can have on one. Everyone needs a little light in their world. Jess' mission is to spread this far & wide.‍

This episode is a little different to my usual ones but let me tell you it is definitely a FEEL GOOD EP and you can feel the energy oozing out of it! I was running off of a high for HOURS after recording!

Every Be The Light Bulb Purchased, $1 contributes to the SA Breakthrough Foundation who tackle mental health head on.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the wonderful Mitchell Villani

There is soooo much value in this episode and I am so freaking excited to bring it to you.

Mitch was an elite athlete and travelled the world playing the sport he loved. One day everything changed when he had a horrible injury on the ice which (eventually) an MRI confirmed C5, 6 and 7 protrusions in his neck. This left him in chronic nerve pain for years, unable to get relief.

With Doctors only offering a choice between a surgery that had a 1 in 4 chance of him becoming a paraplegic or a cocktail of prescription drugs the constant pain lead him down a path of drug abuse, trauma, depression, suicidal thoughts,

Listen in to hear about how he went on to heal his pain by 'living differently'. We talk about his experiences with water fasting, detoxification and the small things we can do in our every day to better take care of ourselves.

Also don't miss the story of how he 'lobstered' himself in the bath towards the end of the ep! There is SO SO much in this ep and so much that you can take away and learn from Mitch. Don't miss this one!

You can find Mitch at @mitchellvillani or https://www.mitchellvillani.com/

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the wonderful Trin!

a 44 year old mum of two, Trin has been married for almost 25 years and enjoys being in nature, yoga, anything creative, going out for meals- especially breakfast... (hello eggs benny!) This super woman has been through a lot! After being the victim of sexual abuse from a neighbour from ages 7 through 10 (ish). It wasn't until being triggered 35 years later that she started to unpack and deal with everything that she went through.

Diagnosed with delayed onset PTSD, depressed and anxious mood and adjustment disorder (aka situational depression) She has also suffered from flashbacks, night terrors, hyper-vigilance, Dissociation, Panic attacks and anxiety, This is alongside a bunch of other symptoms -All settling now she is dealing with her trauma! Absolutely incredible.

She talks us through what she went through in order to press charges in New Zealand, who has helped her along the way and what she does to keep herself mentally well now.

I am so grateful for Trin being willing to share her story of what she went through as we both say the dissociation aspect is super interesting to consider.

My wish is that absolutely no-one will resonate with her story but sadly I know this will not be the case, i truly know this episode is going to help so many people out there.

Huuuge thanks to you Trin!

Hey guys! In todays episode I answer the anonymous questions you asked of me over on my instagram pages.

There was definitely a bit of a theme going on here with many of you wanting to know more about my life living in Indonesia and working as a dive instructor. I talk about how scuba diving affected my mental health and if I feel my mental health is better/worse living in Adelaide or in Indonesia. I also talk through how I managed my mental health and if hearing other peoples stories, during recording, affects me and how I manage it all.

A bit of a different one this week, I know, but I hope you enjoy getting to know me a little bit better.

We will be back with your regular programming next week! haha.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the lovely Sarah!

The first guest I have ever had walk in with a gift for me lol so kind.

Like many, her story is multi-faceted. Sarah talks through what she was like as a child and a teen and how she would often be the one to 'take it to the next level'. Not really feeling like she 'fit in'. It wasn't until she was going through the process of getting her son diagnosed with ADHD and she was filling out his forms that she started the realise that actually SHE was ticking a lot of those boxes too.

Sarah is very vulnerable with me and shares her journey with depression, medication, alcohol, being suicidal and the mental health act. Her story is very powerful and is a testament to her strength.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the incredible Elise!

Elise is bloody ray of sunshine let me tell you. Our paths crossed organically a little over a year ago and I now feel lucky to call her my friend.

We talk through the path she has walked with her mental health which started off with some belief and herself and some struggles with her body image from a very young age. We discuss how your environment can truly affect your health, not only mentally but physically and how invaluable time outside is.

Elise is the founder of Enliven Outdoor Adventures, her awesome business in which she aims to inspire, lower the barriers and create opportunities for women and girls to get outdoors in Adelaide, South Australia.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the wonderful Kimmy.

I was lucky enough to cross paths with Kimmy about a month ago through my work and it just goes to show how cool connections can be made with a simple conversation AND how effective branding can be on a hoodie! lol.

Kimmy talks to us about his childhood, growing up being bullied throughout most of his childhood to living in a household with a father with alcoholism to how a very bad ending to a relationship left him without the energy to leave the house for 6 months.

We also talk through the not for profit mental health organisation Together 4ever that he has co-founded here in Adelaide, South Australia and what drove him to take this leap.

Another unique story with an incredible guest.

If you are in Adelaide come and join us next Thursday the 8th of September 2022 for the official launch of Together 4ever at Hains & Co from 5-8pm.

You can find Kimmy at @_kimmyau and @together4everaus on IG.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with MY MUM!!

If you know my mum, you will know she is an absolute gem. Nurse, mother of 3, beach lover, hostess with the mostess and my number 1 supporter.

This episode was so much fun to record. I thought it would be a really cool idea to bring mum on to talk about how my journey with mental health was for her as the main support person in my life and in my journey.

We talk about how she has seen the mental health space develop as a nurse for the last 42 years, the first signs and symptoms she noticed in me and how we went about getting help together. Stay tuned and see if you can count how many times she refers to me as snappy!! haha.

A cool episode from a different perspective. Not to be missed!

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the incredible Sophie!

I feel as though we walked into this recording as strangers and left as best friends haha. Sophie is a 29 year old Holistic Counsellor who’s been diagnosed with endometriosis, epilepsy (depending on which specialist you ask), coeliac disease, PTSD (from childhood trauma) and unofficially diagnosed with PTSD from my medical journey too Her story starts at the onset of puberty at age 12 when she started developing debilitating symptoms alongside her period. After being told for years that her 'pain was normal' and 'everyone has period pain' she takes us through her decision to have a hysterectomy, the hurdles that preceded it and how she is today.

It was quite the lengthy journey from point A to B and we discuss how her mental health was affected and how she felt at her absolute lowest point.

The episode is jam packed full of emotion and there is a lot to learn. In Australia 1 in 9 women and those assigned female at birth have endometriosis.

You can find Sophie at @unfoldwellbeing on IG.

Hey friends!

In todays episode I open myself up more than I ever have before. This is the most vulnerable I have ever been. I've been very open about the fact that self harm has been a part of my journey but to sit down and record not only the episode but the accompanying diary entry was a lot. I truly hope that by opening up like this and creating an honest conversation around mental health and self harm i will give another person the courage or 'permission' to do so too. We are stronger together.

This weeks episode is a lot so please consider if listening to it is good for you at this point in time.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the wonderful Kim!

I thoroughly enjoyed having this incredible woman over for a chat. In todays episode we talk through different aspects and events from her childhood that have had an impact on her as an adult and how she feels about those looking back with hindsight today. She talks through her diagnosis with thyroid cancer in 2018, her undiagnosed auto immune disease and how it is living with health anxiety. It was great to hear about the different ways she has detoxified her life in order to take care of her physical AND mental health. I think you are really going to get a lot out of this one.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the inspiring Aaron!

He walks us through his journey with addiction to alcohol and cocaine and the recovery that followed. From hiding his usage, ultimatums from loved ones and going to rehab he tells us what it looked like and speaks about his path to eight years of sobriety (and counting!)

I have to say, I think this is the episode that I have learned the most in so far, and I hope that it may be the same for many of you listening.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with Zoe AKA ZMac!

Zoe is one of my closest friends and part of my incredible Wednesday crew. She is a wonderful friend, mother and kindy teacher and loves cooking, music (always my 'gig friend') and craft beer.

At age 30 Zoe was diagnosed with Alopecia, an auto-immune disease that affects approximately 1-2% of Australians. She talks us through what that was like and how the medications she was prescribed for it affected her mental health. Then last year, at age 35, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

Watching this incredible woman go through so much in such a short time has taught me so much. There are a lot of takeaways in this episode so please listen, there is a lot to learn.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with my awesome mate JD!

I am so excited to bring you all this conversation between Jason.. I mean JD and I. lol.

JD and I have known each other for some time now but have become closer in the last year as we started to share walks together as an opportunity to talk. In this episode we discuss some of the struggles he has been through, how he felt a little bit lost in knowing what to do in life and how finding his purpose has given him a new outlook.

As a primary school teacher JD also talks about some of the challenges he sees his students facing already from such a young age.

Some great reminders in here that it's never too late and you're never too old! Life isn't over at 30 guuuuys!

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with the amazing Josh Lee!

This guy is an absolute legend and well known advocate for breaking down the stigma of mental health here in South Australia.

Josh grew up on a farm in a small town on the south coast of New South Wales, with a love of sports and the outdoors. Growing up in a home with his mum and sister, where sharing his emotions was encouraged, was quite the contrast to the male dominated workplaces he went on to experience.

He talks about a particular evening which is proof as to why it is so important to reach out to our family and friends when we miss them or if we are worried about them. I think you will find the way he talks about mental health VS mental wellbeing very interesting also.

Josh spent 9 years as an ambassador for @livinorg and is a bloody inspiration. He was one of the very first people that I knew I wanted to have on my podcast and he was honestly the first person to throw his own hand up. I am so grateful for this guy.

Hey guys! In todays episode I chat with Fran!

For those of you who had been following along on my @hightidelowtideau instagram page you will have seen his face along the way as he helped me set up my podcast studio in my kitchen lol. He has been an integral part of this journey and it was my honour to have him as my very first guest.

Fran is super open about what he has been through and I am so proud of how far he has come.

Hi Guys and welcome to the very FIRST episode of High Tide Low Tide.

I am so so excited to be sharing this with you.

This episode is a bit of an introduction to me, your host, Leesa Scanlan. I was diagnosed with depression over 16 years ago and know the power that there is in sharing our stories with our own mental health. My hope is that by creating a space for us to share and connect, people will feel less alone in their own journey.

I look forward to all of the people this will bring into my life along the road of this podcast. If you are feeling a bit shit today, know that you're not alone and that it can and will get better.
